Biggin Hill sits inside the M25 in the London Borough of Bromley, twelve miles from Canary Wharf and fifteen from the centre. Apart from London City, which accepts only aircraft approved for its steep approach, no other business aviation field is this close to the east side of the capital. It takes no scheduled traffic at all, it needs no runway slot, and a helicopter from the apron reaches the London Heliport at Battersea in about six minutes.
For repositioning sectors it has an advantage most other London airports lack. Bombardier's service centre here is the largest business jet maintenance facility in the United Kingdom, and aircraft coming in for work fly in empty and leave empty. That produces sectors in months when the holiday market has gone quiet.
Sectors are released through the day and the good ones go quickly. If no current sector matches your plan, send us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will contact you when something does, including movements that never reach a public list.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.
Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up at London Biggin Hill.
Nothing is stored on this site. The button opens a chat with the message already written, and you send it yourself. We reply during office hours, 07:00 to 23:00, and check messages outside them too.
Three things shape repositioning here, and only one of them is seasonal.

Traffic concentrates on a short list of routes, and those are where repositioning flights turn up. If your trip follows one of these corridors the odds are good, and if it does not, a standard charter is usually faster than waiting.
| Corridor | Flight time | When it runs | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paris Le Bourget | 1h 05m | Year round | City and Canary Wharf business traffic runs this corridor hard in both directions |
| Geneva | 1h 35m | December to March | Aircraft go out full and return empty, so the bargain is the flight home rather than the flight out |
| Zurich | 1h 35m | Year round, heaviest in winter | Banking traffic keeps it alive outside the ski season, which few Alpine corridors manage |
| Nice | 1h 55m | May to September | A short helicopter hop onwards puts you in Monaco, which is why this corridor is so heavily used |
| Ibiza | 2h 20m | June to September | Strongest at the edges of the season, in June and September, when repositioning is heavy but demand has not peaked |
| Dublin | 1h 15m | Year round | The easiest sector in this market for anyone travelling with a dog, because no approved route is needed from Ireland |
| New York | 7h 50m | Year round | Long range jets from North America are handled here routinely, with customs on site and no slot to wait for |
One thing worth knowing about timing. An empty leg rarely comes with a fixed departure time. More often the operator offers a window of a day or two and confirms the exact hour closer to the flight, once the charter that created the sector is settled.
That is workable if you are flexible and impossible if you are not. We will always tell you how firm a departure is before you pay, rather than letting you assume it is fixed.
| Codes | BQH (IATA), EGKB (ICAO) |
| Location | London Borough of Bromley, inside the M25. Twelve miles from Canary Wharf, fifteen from the centre |
| Runway | One runway in use, 03/21, 1,806 m, with an ILS for runway 21 and satellite based approaches. A second runway, 11/29, was permanently withdrawn from use in May 2017. Handles everything from light jets to corporate airliners |
| Operating hours | 06:30 to 23:00 Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 22:00 at weekends and on bank holidays. Among the longest hours of the London fields that are not open around the clock |
| Slots | None required for the runway, which is unusual around London and the reason short notice movements work here |
| Traffic | Business and general aviation only. Scheduled and holiday charter flights are barred by a Court of Appeal ruling won by the local authority in 2001, which prohibits the sale of tickets for flights here |
| Customs and border control | UK Border Force on site during opening hours, so international arrivals clear without transiting another airport |
| Maintenance | Home of Bombardier's London service centre, the largest business jet maintenance facility in the United Kingdom, alongside fuelling, de icing and jet washing |
| Hangarage | Available for visiting and based aircraft, short or long term |
| History | A Royal Air Force station through the Battle of Britain. Operational RAF flying ended in 1958 and the last RAF unit left in 1992. The London Borough of Bromley owns the site, and since 1994 the airport has been run by a private operator on a 125 year lease |
Biggin Hill offers a choice of two full service handlers, which is worth something on a busy morning, and both have direct access to the ramp.
The airport's own operation, running the executive terminal with two lounges looking onto the airfield, showers, conference rooms and UK Border Force in the same building. It also coordinates ground and helicopter transfers, so one team handles the whole arrival.
A private terminal of around 1,900 square metres, open since 2023, with UK Border Force and customs on site, several lounges, boardrooms, showers and a concierge service. Familiar to crews across the Jetex network, which matters on an aircraft arriving from the Gulf.
On an empty leg the choice is not yours: the sector belongs to the operator and the operator has its own arrangement with a handler. Which one you get is confirmed in the flight brief, along with the address, the gate to use and the crew contact.

People who have never flown privately usually ask the same question: what happens between arriving at the airport and sitting on the aircraft. At Biggin Hill the honest answer is that there is very little of it, whichever terminal your operator uses.
Fifteen to twenty minutes before departure is enough for a domestic sector, twenty to thirty for an international one. If you arrive earlier than that, the lounge is a pleasant place to be, which is not something anybody says about an airline terminal.
This is the reason a good number of clients pick Biggin Hill over anywhere else. A twin engine helicopter lifts from the apron and lands at the London Heliport in Battersea about six minutes later.
It is arranged alongside the flight rather than separately, and it changes the arithmetic of the whole trip. A road transfer from Biggin Hill into the City takes forty to seventy minutes depending on the hour, and into the West End longer. The helicopter removes most of it, and on a Friday evening in summer that saving is not marginal.
Where it makes least sense is Kent and the south east, because from there the car is already quick. Where it makes most sense is any arrival where somebody is waiting for you at a fixed time in the centre of London.
Biggin Hill has a reputation for short notice departures and it is deserved, but it is worth knowing what the clock is really waiting on. The runway is not the constraint here, because there is no slot to secure. Three other things are.
Put together, three to four hours from a phone call to wheels up is realistic here on a normal day, and it can be considerably less when an aircraft and crew happen to be standing by. That is not a promise; it is what the constraints allow.

Biggin Hill usually costs less on the ground than Farnborough, the best known dedicated business aviation field near London. It is not trying to beat Farnborough on the terminal, and it does not price as though it were.
As at any airport, none of these charges reaches you separately on an empty leg, because they come with the sector. The helicopter is the exception and is quoted on its own. It matters when you are comparing charter quotes, and it is a real reason a Biggin Hill departure can undercut the same aircraft out of Farnborough.
Biggin Hill is the obvious choice for the City, Canary Wharf, south east London and Kent, and the wrong one if you are heading west. These are typical off peak times.
| Destination | By car | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Canary Wharf | 35 to 55 min | Twelve miles. Only London City is nearer, and it takes only aircraft approved for its steep approach |
| The City | 40 to 70 min | Or six minutes by helicopter to Battersea and a car on from there |
| Mayfair and the West End | 50 to 80 min | The helicopter earns its cost on this leg more than any other |
| Kent and the south east | 20 to 45 min | No other business aviation field is as convenient for most of Kent |
| Gatwick and the Sussex coast | 45 to 75 min | Useful when part of a group is connecting onto a scheduled flight |
| West London and the Thames Valley | 70 to 100 min | Farnborough or Luton will beat it comfortably |
There is no railway station at the airport. The nearest stations, such as Orpington and Bromley South, are a car ride away, and with luggage and a waiting driver nobody takes that route. In practice the choice is the car or the helicopter.
Biggin Hill has a calendar most other London fields do not have, because many of its movements are driven by maintenance rather than by holidays. That gives it empty sectors in months when most other fields are quiet.
September, October, March and April are the months to aim for. November and January look unpromising on paper and are worth watching anyway, because the maintenance ferries that most other London fields do not have keep sectors on the board through the winter.
Biggin Hill is well set up for animals, and the advantage is practical rather than promotional. The airport runs its own pet handling service, SkyPets, with a dedicated team and pet travel advice, so the arrival is prepared by people who specialise in it rather than improvised on the day.

Two practical points. The airport needs to be told about an arriving animal, and to have all its paperwork, at least twenty four hours before it lands, so this belongs in the first conversation and not the last. And the underlying rules do not change: for an arrival into Great Britain the operator has to hold the relevant approval to carry animals and, unless the flight comes from Ireland, the route has to be an approved one, which is checked for every booking. Leaving the country, the requirements are those of your destination.
Tell us your route - we'll respond within the hour.
They are not interchangeable. What decides the right one is usually the time from wheels down to your front door, not the length of the runway or the name on the terminal. On an empty leg the airport comes with the sector, so this is most useful when you are choosing a charter or deciding which routes to watch.
Business aviation only and the best terminal in Europe. PPR required. The default for west and south west London, Surrey and Hampshire.
The widest choice of sectors and two competing FBOs, with no PPR. The airport runs around the clock, but business aviation night movements are restricted and in recent summers have been withdrawn between June and September.
South east London, Kent and Canary Wharf. Helicopter shuttle to Battersea in minutes, and a point of entry for pets on private aircraft.
The longest runway of the London fields, ramp space when Luton is full, and the home of VIP airliners. Open around the clock, but business aviation night slots are capped and are being reduced.
The shortest drive to Mayfair of any London field. Civil movements are capped and booked well in advance, so availability decides rather than price.
The only private jet centre inside London. Restricted to certified types flown by specifically approved crews.
Drive times are typical off peak figures and move considerably in the Friday evening peak. Where the road is the problem, a helicopter transfer from Biggin Hill, Luton or Stansted reaches central London in well under half an hour. No London field offers unrestricted business aviation access through the night, so a departure after 23:00 needs planning rather than assuming.
