Scotland is one country with several quite different aviation markets inside it. The central belt runs on the London shuttle, the north east on the energy industry and Norway, the Highlands on golf, whisky and the sporting estates, and the islands on turboprops, short runways and, at Barra, a beach that disappears under the tide twice a day.
What they share is geography. Very few business jets are based north of the border, so most aircraft that land here have either flown in empty or will fly out empty, and those one way sectors are exactly what an empty leg is. Choosing the airport, reaching the islands, finding the nearest runway to St Andrews or Speyside and allowing for the new Scottish departure tax from April 2027 are the decisions that shape a trip here. The three largest cities each have a guide of their own, for Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.

The board below collects every sector our operator network has released that starts or finishes at a Scottish airport. It matches on airport codes as well as city names, so a flight into Kirkwall, Stornoway or Islay appears alongside Edinburgh and Glasgow instead of being lost.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.
Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up in Scotland.

Four streams of traffic produce most of the repositioning flights in the country, and each one keeps its own timetable.
These seven mainland airports cover almost every private trip that does not end on an island. The right one is seldom the one nearest the city you have heard of: it is the one nearest to where you are actually going, with a runway long enough for the aircraft doing the flying.
| Airport | Runway | Best for | Private handling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Edinburgh, EDI / EGPH | 2,558 m | The capital, Murrayfield, East Lothian golf and Gleneagles | Signature's business aviation centre, with handling and parking booked in advance. Open around the clock, with a stricter noise limit from 23:30 to 06:00 |
| Glasgow, GLA / EGPF | 2,665 m | The west, Loch Lomond and onward flights to the islands | Four handlers. Signature's new building keeps 06:00 to 22:00 with a call out, and Gama's terminal works around the clock |
| Glasgow Prestwick, PIK / EGPK | 2,987 m | Royal Troon, Turnberry, heavy jets and the Atlantic crossing | A single handler run by the airport itself, open 24 hours a day with no restrictions |
| Aberdeen, ABZ / EGPD | 1,953 m | The energy business, Royal Deeside, Norway and Shetland | Signature's business aviation centre on its own approach road, staffed 06:30 to 21:30 with a call out; the airport's published hours are 06:00 to 22:30, with extended opening on request |
| Inverness, INV / EGPE | 1,888 m | The Highlands, Loch Ness, Cabot Highlands, Royal Dornoch and Speyside | Signature and two local handlers. Signature is open 06:30 to 22:00, closing earlier on Sundays, with a call out available |
| Dundee, DND / EGPN | 1,400 m | St Andrews, Carnoustie and the Angus coast | No private terminal and no extensions to the published hours, which the airport operator proposes to shorten after October 2026. Light and midsize jets only |
| Wick John O'Groats, WIC / EGPC | 1,825 m | Caithness and the far north coast | Short published hours and closed on Saturdays, with daylight opening outside them by arrangement |
Two rules settle most choices. For golf, pick the field by the course rather than by the city: Prestwick for Ayrshire, Dundee for St Andrews and Carnoustie, Inverness for everything north of the Cairngorms. For a heavy long range aircraft, Prestwick has the runway to leave with full tanks and Glasgow comes next, while Aberdeen, Inverness and Dundee are at their best with light and midsize jets.

Ground handling in Scotland runs from a building that opened at Glasgow in 2026 to an island terminal shared with the morning scheduled flight. This is what you will find at each airport, and the hours each one actually keeps.
Flying private is simple at every Scottish airport, but the details change once you leave the main ones behind.

More of Scotland can be reached by air than most visitors expect, but not all of it by jet. The table shows what each island runway will take, together with Campbeltown on the Kintyre peninsula, and what to know before you book.
| Airport | Runway | What it takes | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Islay, ILY | 1,550 m | Turboprops and light jets | Twenty five minutes from Glasgow and within easy reach of more than ten distilleries. Three hours of prior permission at the minimum |
| Orkney, Kirkwall KOI | 1,430 m | Turboprops and light jets | Three miles from Kirkwall. The airfield closes before six on a Saturday evening |
| Shetland, Sumburgh LSI | 1,424 m and 1,498 m | Turboprops and light jets | Twenty five miles south of Lerwick, on a narrow neck of land open to two seas, so wind is the usual reason a flight moves |
| Lewis, Stornoway SYY | 2,088 m | Any business jet likely to be heading there | The longest island runway, once a NATO base. On Sundays the airfield opens only in the afternoon |
| Benbecula, BEB | 1,837 m | Turboprops and jets | A former RAF field serving the Uists, with a runway long enough for most business jets |
| Tiree, TRE | 1,481 m | Turboprops and light jets | A flat island open to the Atlantic, with a second, shorter runway for crosswind days and scheduled links to Glasgow and Oban |
| Barra, BRR | Three sand strips, 680 to 846 m | Light aircraft and small turboprops such as the Twin Otter | The runways are on the beach at Traigh Mhor and go under water at high tide, so the timetable follows the tide table. No jets and no night flying |
| Kintyre, Campbeltown CAL | A former NATO runway | Business jets, subject to the hours and fire cover | Minutes from Machrihanish and Machrihanish Dunes, and far more runway than the peninsula will ever use |
| Skye and Mull | No runway for a jet | Helicopters and light aircraft | A helicopter from Inverness or Glasgow, or a light aircraft onto a short strip, finishes the journey |
Two practical points follow from the table. Empty legs to the islands themselves are rare, because few jets go there, so the usual plan is a sector into Glasgow, Inverness or Aberdeen and a short turboprop charter for the last leg, booked in the same enquiry. And an arrival from abroad straight onto an island has to be arranged in advance with the airport and the border authorities, which is why most itineraries clear customs on the mainland first.
The great names of Scottish golf, whisky and field sports are rarely next door to the big airports. This is where each one sits in relation to a runway, with typical times by car.
| Destination | Nearest runway | By car | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| St Andrews and Kingsbarns | Dundee | 30 to 40 min | From Edinburgh the helicopter takes about twenty five minutes instead |
| Carnoustie | Dundee | about 25 min | The Dunhill Links in early October fills Dundee with private jets |
| Muirfield, North Berwick and the Renaissance Club | Edinburgh | 45 to 60 min | The Renaissance Club is contracted to host the Scottish Open through 2030 |
| Gleneagles | Edinburgh | about an hour | Helicopters land at the hotel, which turns the hour into minutes |
| Royal Troon and Old Prestwick | Prestwick | about 10 min | Both clubs are within a few miles of the runway |
| Turnberry | Prestwick | about 30 min | Groups often base themselves here and fly to other links by helicopter |
| Loch Lomond | Glasgow | about 30 min | A private members' club, so confirm the invitation before planning around it |
| Cabot Highlands at Castle Stuart | Inverness | about 5 min | Two links courses, Castle Stuart and Old Petty, a few miles from the terminal |
| Nairn | Inverness | about 15 min | An easy second course for anyone staying at Castle Stuart |
| Royal Dornoch | Inverness | about an hour | Dornoch has its own strip for aircraft up to 5.7 tonnes and a helipad near the clubhouse |
| Machrihanish and Machrihanish Dunes | Campbeltown | a few minutes | The airport sits at the edge of Machrihanish village, a short drive from both first tees |
| Speyside distilleries | Inverness or Aberdeen | about 75 min | More than fifty working distilleries between the two cities |
| Islay distilleries | Islay | 10 to 40 min | Every distillery on the island is an easy drive from the airport |
| Royal Deeside and Balmoral | Aberdeen | about an hour to Ballater | The Braemar Gathering is held on the first Saturday of September |
| Highland sporting estates | Inverness | varies | Many estates have their own helicopter landing site, which is often the best final leg |
Leuchars deserves a paragraph of its own, because older guides still recommend it. The former RAF station five miles from St Andrews received around a hundred private aircraft in the two years to October 2025, but its radars were withdrawn on 1 July 2026 and civil flights ended with them. For The Open at St Andrews in July 2027 the choice is Dundee, fourteen miles from the Old Course, for light and midsize jets, or Edinburgh with a helicopter for the last twenty five minutes. With Dundee's hours under review after its last airline leaves, the window there is confirmed with the booking rather than assumed.

Handling in Scotland is generally cheaper than in the London area. The line that will change most over the next two years is tax, because Scotland takes over the departure duty from April 2027.
The Highlands and Islands exemption is worth understanding before you book the return. At the moment a departure from any airport in the region, Inverness, Wick, Kirkwall, Sumburgh, Stornoway and Islay among them, pays no Air Passenger Duty, and that includes private flights. Under the new tax the exemption continues for flights from the region to anywhere else in the UK, is extended to flights into the region from elsewhere in Scotland, and ends for international departures. The Scottish Government has also proposed that private jets should fall outside it altogether, so until the detail is final, treat the tax as payable on a private departure after 1 April 2027. It appears as its own line in every quote we send.
Positioning is what makes a Scottish charter expensive. With so few jets based here, a quote out of Inverness or Aberdeen usually includes an aircraft flying up from England before the trip begins, and an empty leg is the one booking where that flight simply does not exist.
Inside Scotland the case for a short flight is stronger than the distances suggest, because the islands add a ferry and the Highland roads are slow.
| Journey | By air | By road and ferry |
|---|---|---|
| Glasgow to Islay | 25 min | Four to five hours, with the ferry from Kennacraig |
| Edinburgh to Inverness | 40 min | About three hours on the A9 |
| Inverness to Kirkwall | 35 min | Four hours or more, with the ferry from Scrabster |
| Glasgow to Stornoway | 50 min | Seven hours or more, with the ferry from Ullapool |
| Aberdeen to Sumburgh | 50 min | An overnight ferry to Lerwick, then forty minutes south by road |
| Edinburgh to Kirkwall | 55 min | Most of a day, by road to Scrabster and across the Pentland Firth |
The same logic applies to helicopters. From Inverness a helicopter reaches Skye or a west coast estate in well under an hour, where the road takes two and a half hours or more, and Knoydart has no road connection at all.

Each of these routes starts at the Scottish airport that produces it most often. Prices are guide figures for the whole aircraft on a repositioning sector, and the aircraft type and the charter price for each route sit in the charter price table for Scotland.
| Route | Flight time | Empty leg from | Peak | Which direction runs empty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Glasgow to Islay | 0h 25m | 1,800 GBP | April to October | Back to Glasgow. Distillery groups fly out and the aircraft returns empty the same day |
| Edinburgh to Inverness | 0h 40m | 1,800 GBP | All year | Both. Golf in the summer, the estates in the autumn |
| Glasgow to Belfast | 0h 45m | 1,800 GBP | All year | Both. It looks international and is not, so there is nothing to clear |
| Glasgow to Stornoway | 0h 50m | 1,800 GBP | May to September | Back to Glasgow. Low frequency, so register the route rather than watch |
| Aberdeen to Sumburgh | 0h 50m | 1,800 GBP | All year | Both, on the offshore rota rather than the calendar |
| Edinburgh to Kirkwall | 0h 55m | 1,800 GBP | May to September | Back to Edinburgh, once a party has been dropped for a long weekend in Orkney |
| Edinburgh to Dublin | 0h 55m | 1,800 GBP | All year | Both, with extra traffic on Six Nations weekends |
| Aberdeen to Stavanger | 1h 05m | 2,200 GBP | All year, weekdays | Both. Energy contracts keep it moving through the winter |
| Edinburgh to London | 1h 10m | 3,100 GBP | All year, weekdays | Both. The busiest private route in Scotland |
| Prestwick to London | 1h 15m | 2,900 GBP | April to October | Back to London once a golf group has been dropped |
| Dundee to London | 1h 15m | 2,900 GBP | April to October | Back to London, in numbers around The Open and the Dunhill Links |
| Inverness to London | 1h 30m | 3,300 GBP | April to October | Both. Aircraft come north empty to collect guests and go south empty after dropping them |
| Edinburgh to Paris | 1h 35m | 3,500 GBP | All year | Both, and busiest around the rugby |
| Edinburgh to Geneva | 2h 05m | 6,600 GBP | December to March | Back to Scotland at the end of each ski week |
| Glasgow to Nice | 2h 35m | 10,200 GBP | May to September | Back to Glasgow through the summer |
| Edinburgh to Palma de Mallorca | 2h 50m | 9,000 GBP | June to September | Back to Edinburgh after the Friday rush south |
| Aberdeen to Malaga | 3h 25m | 13,500 GBP | April to October | Both. Golf on the Costa del Sol runs for most of the year |
| Edinburgh to Dubai | 7h 05m | 41,000 GBP | November to March | Both. Rare from Scotland, so it pays to register |
| Prestwick to New York | 7h 05m | 30,800 GBP | May to October | Both. American golf groups fill it one way and leave it empty the other |
For anything crossing the Atlantic, Prestwick is the airport to watch. The main runway is close to three kilometres, the handler works through the night and the field has been a refuelling stop for transatlantic traffic for decades, so a heavy jet can leave with full tanks at any hour. When a New York sector does come up in Scotland, it is most likely to be from here or from Glasgow.

If you want to see what your route would cost as a standard charter, so you have something to measure an empty leg against, use the calculator below. Fill in the airports, the dates and the number of passengers, add any preference on aircraft type, and we will send a written calculation by email or messenger. Please check your contact details carefully so that we can reply quickly.
The figure the calculator returns is an estimate for planning. The firm quote comes back from our consultants with the cost broken out line by line, and the price agreed there is the price written into the contract.

If you would rather skip the arithmetic, send us the route and the dates instead and a consultant will come back with both numbers, the charter price and any empty leg that fits.
Scotland is part of the United Kingdom for immigration and customs, so the rules are British ones. A few of them matter more here than elsewhere.
Flight times into Scotland from the usual starting points abroad, for the aircraft that typically flies each route:
| From | Into | Typical aircraft | Flight time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dublin | Edinburgh | Pilatus PC-12 | 0h 55m |
| Stavanger | Aberdeen | Pilatus PC-12 | 1h 05m |
| Oslo | Aberdeen | Citation XLS+ | 1h 20m |
| Amsterdam | Edinburgh | Citation M2 | 1h 25m |
| Paris | Edinburgh | Citation CJ3 | 1h 35m |
| Copenhagen | Edinburgh | Citation XLS+ | 1h 40m |
| Frankfurt | Edinburgh | Citation XLS+ | 1h 45m |
| Zurich | Edinburgh | Citation XLS+ | 2h 00m |
| Geneva | Edinburgh | Citation XLS+ | 2h 05m |
| Munich | Edinburgh | Citation XLS+ | 2h 10m |
| Nice | Glasgow | Challenger 300 | 2h 35m |
| Dubai | Edinburgh | Global 6000 | 7h 05m |
| New York | Prestwick | Gulfstream G450 | about 6h 05m |
The crossing from New York is roughly an hour shorter than the return shown in the price table, because the prevailing westerly winds carry an eastbound flight and slow a westbound one.
Scotland keeps a calendar of its own, set by rugby, golf, whisky, the shooting seasons and the festivals. The weeks that matter most follow events rather than school holidays: the golf championships in July, and the festivals and the grouse season in August.
Across the country, the months to aim for are March, April, May, September and October. The pattern to remember is the one every big Scottish event creates: arrivals bunch up before it and departures bunch up the day after, and it is the departures that come to market as empty legs.
Tell us your route - we'll respond within the hour.
Inside the United Kingdom there is nothing special to arrange. A dog flying from London to Inverness, or from Glasgow out to Islay, needs no approved route, only the operator's agreement to carry it, and that applies to the islands exactly as it does to the mainland.

Arriving from abroad is the narrow part, because both the operator and the route need the right approvals. Edinburgh and Glasgow are on the approved list for animals on private flights with a number of operators, while Aberdeen and the Highland airports are not, so a dog heading north usually lands in the central belt first. Gun dogs travelling to the estates follow exactly the same rules as pets, so tell us about them with the guns rather than on the day.
