Empty leg flights to and from Frankfurt

Frankfurt am Main is Germany's financial capital and one of the busiest business destinations in Europe. The European Central Bank, the Bundesbank, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and the German headquarters of most international banks sit within a few streets of each other, and since Brexit many London firms have added or enlarged offices here. The Messe, one of the largest exhibition grounds in the world, brings the Book Fair, Ambiente and dozens of other trade fairs, and the Rheingau vineyards, the spa town of Wiesbaden and the Taunus hills are all close by. Germany is one hour ahead of the UK all year, and the flight from London takes about 1h 20m.

For private flights, Frankfurt means a choice of two airports. Frankfurt Airport, code FRA, is Germany's largest hub, with its own General Aviation Terminal on the southern side, and Egelsbach, about 10 kilometres south east of the airport, is the country's busiest airfield for general aviation.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.

Set up an alert for Frankfurt

Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up between the UK and Frankfurt.

Please fill in both the departure and the arrival city.

Nothing is stored on this site. The button opens a chat with the message already written, and you send it yourself. We reply during office hours, 07:00 to 23:00, and check messages outside them too.

Why so many jets fly empty between Frankfurt and Britain

Frankfurt is a business destination first, and business trips are short. A jet that brings bankers or exhibitors in the morning rarely waits for them for two days; it flies home or on to its next job, and comes back empty for the return.

Banks, funds and the ECB
The European Central Bank, the Bundesbank and the banks of the Westend and the financial district keep a steady flow of day trips and overnight stays from London all year. Most of them are booked one way, so the aircraft positions empty at least once on every trip.
Trade fairs at the Messe
The Book Fair in October, Ambiente at the turn of January and February and the other fairs at the Messe bring waves of exhibitors and buyers on fixed dates. After the opening day many aircraft leave empty, and they return empty for the closing day.
A home for business jets
Operators and flight departments base aircraft at Frankfurt Airport and at Egelsbach, which has more than 80,000 movements a year. Their aircraft fly out empty to collect clients in Britain and return empty after a drop.
The night ban
Because nothing may leave Frankfurt Airport between 23:00 and 05:00, crews who drop passengers in the evening often fly home empty before the ban begins rather than wait until morning, and some of those sectors are released as empty legs.
On the way to somewhere else
Frankfurt lies on the direct line between Britain and Switzerland, Austria, Italy or Eastern Europe, so aircraft positioning across the continent can call here easily, and sectors that fit these journeys appear on the board at short notice.

Sectors come up in every month, with the busiest weeks around the big trade fairs, the end of the quarter in the banking world and the school holidays. Monday mornings and Thursday and Friday evenings are the best times to look for flights between London and Frankfurt.

Frankfurt Airport in detail

The airport opened on 8 July 1936, and after the war its southern part became the Rhein-Main Air Base of the United States Air Force, which closed in 2005; Terminal 3 now stands on that land. Fraport AG runs the airport, which is the home base of Lufthansa. In 2025 it handled 63.2 million passengers, 2.6 per cent more than in 2024, and 460,272 aircraft movements, 4.4 per cent more. Terminal 3 opened in April 2026, British Airways moved into it in May, and Terminal 2 closed in June, to be rebuilt later.

Codes FRA (IATA) and EDDF (ICAO)
Location About 12 kilometres south west of the city centre, beside the Frankfurter Kreuz motorway junction
Runways Four: 07C/25C and 07R/25L, both 4,000 metres; the Northwest Runway, 07L/25R, 2,800 metres and used for landings only; and Runway 18 West, 4,000 metres and used only for departures to the south
Elevation 111 metres, or 364 feet, above sea level
Operator Fraport AG
Night rules No landings or departures between 23:00 and 05:00, apart from emergencies, medical and government flights, a few delayed arrivals until midnight and, with individual approval, delayed departures until midnight; limited movements from 22:00 to 23:00 and 05:00 to 06:00
Slots Frankfurt is fully coordinated, and every private flight needs a slot from the German slot coordinator
Private flights Handled at the General Aviation Terminal, Building 514, in Cargo City South, south of runway 07R/25L
Handlers Fraport Executive Aviation, Business Aviation Centre Frankfurt and FAS Frankfurt Aviation Service
Traffic 63.2 million passengers and 460,272 movements in 2025
Business aircraft The Phenom 300, the Citation Latitude and the Citation XLS were the business jet types seen most often in 2025
Rail Two stations: the regional station under Terminal 1, with S Bahn trains to the main station in about 12 minutes, and the long distance station for ICE trains to Cologne, Stuttgart and beyond

For crews, Frankfurt is a first class airport with long runways, precision approaches and every service, but it is also one of the most tightly controlled in Europe. Every flight needs a slot, the night ban is enforced strictly, and a delayed flight that cannot reach Frankfurt by midnight must divert elsewhere. When no slot is free or the night ban gets in the way, Egelsbach is the usual alternative for light jets, and Hahn or Cologne Bonn for later or larger flights.

The General Aviation Terminal and VIP services at Frankfurt

Private passengers at Frankfurt do not pass through the public halls of the airline terminals. The General Aviation Terminal, known as the GAT, is a separate building in Cargo City South, on the far side of the airport from Terminal 1, with its own lounges, security check, passport control and customs.

Building 514 in Cargo City South
The GAT stands south of runway 07R/25L. Drivers leave the motorway at the Cargo City South exit and follow the signs to gate 31 or 32, and cars must be registered online in advance with Fraport so that the number plate is recognised at the gate. Parking is very limited, so a drop off by chauffeur or taxi is the easiest way to arrive.
Fraport Executive Aviation
The airport company's own business aviation team runs the terminal services from 06:00 to 22:00, and around the clock by prior request, with FBO services at any hour. It offers a spacious lounge, a conference room for up to 15 people, separate and quick immigration and customs, catering, limousines, hire cars and hotel bookings.
Business Aviation Centre Frankfurt
Kurz Aviation Service runs the Business Aviation Centre in the GAT, as part of a group with sister centres at Stuttgart and Cologne Bonn and a second base at Egelsbach. It offers a lounge, fuel, catering, limousines, crew lounges, a private security check and hangar space when available, and it books the airport's VIP services for its clients.
FAS Frankfurt Aviation Service
FAS, part of the German Aviation Service network, also works from Building 514. It handles passengers and crews, immigration and customs, catering and aircraft services, with a lounge for passengers.
The Fraport VIP Terminal
For guests who want more, the airport runs its own VIP Terminal, opened in the summer of 2023 in the arrivals area A of Terminal 1. It covers 1,700 square metres on two levels and takes about 100 guests at a time. Inside are a lounge with a bar, a library, three private suites, a cigar lounge, a gaming lounge, a room for greeters and a waiting area for chauffeurs, as well as two conference rooms, the larger of them for up to 20 people, and there are charging points for electric cars. It has its own security check and border control, and prints by Piranesi hang alongside works by contemporary artists. Almost 30,000 guests a year use the airport's VIP services.
The VIP Transit Lounge
The second VIP area, opened in January 2017 in transit area B, serves mainly passengers changing flights. It has eight private suites with marble bathrooms, an à la carte menu, a bar, a cigar lounge and a shopping service that brings purchases from the airport's shops to the lounge.
VIP prices for 2026
The 2026 price list, before VAT, starts at 515 or 545 euros for the first passenger, depending on the direction, with 340 euros for each additional guest, and includes a personal assistant, a private security check, help at the border, use of the lounges with food, drinks and showers, and a limousine to or from the aircraft. Handlers such as the Business Aviation Centre book the service for passengers of private jets.
Private rooms and extras
Suites in the VIP areas cost from 165 euros for a small suite to 605 euros for the largest, the Blue Royal Suite, for up to three hours, also before VAT. A private car can be escorted by a follow me vehicle to or from the GAT for 110 euros a person, and the VIP team works from 05:30 to 22:30.

Which handler looks after the flight is usually chosen by the aircraft's operator, but we can ask for a particular company, and any of them can add the airport's VIP services.

Through the GAT, from car to aircraft

Frankfurt's GAT is small and quick compared with the airline terminals, but it follows German rules to the letter. Here is the order of events in each direction.

ARRIVING BY CAR
Register the number plate
Give us your driver's number plate a day ahead. Access to Cargo City South works by automatic plate recognition, and an unregistered car can be held at the gate.
TIMING
Be there before the slot
Arrive about 20 to 30 minutes before the slot. The border check and the security check both happen in the GAT, and a missed slot at Frankfurt can mean a long wait for the next one.
SECURITY
Your own screening lane
Passengers and hand luggage are screened in the GAT itself, away from the crowds of Terminal 1, and liquids rules apply as at any German airport.
PASSPORTS
Federal police in the GAT
Flights between Frankfurt and Britain leave or enter the Schengen area, so the federal police check every passport in the GAT. On the first crossing under the Entry/Exit System travellers aged twelve and over give fingerprints and everyone is photographed.
BAGS
Loaded by the handler
Suitcases and golf bags are checked, carried to the aircraft and loaded by the handler's staff, and on arrival they come off the aircraft and go straight to your car after customs.
THE LOUNGES
Quiet rooms and meeting tables
The lounges in the GAT offer coffee, drinks, snacks, newspapers and wireless internet, and the conference rooms suit a meeting between flights. Hot food is not served there as standard, so the handler arranges a catered meal if you give notice.
FINE DINING
Only in the VIP areas
The GAT has no restaurant. For a proper meal at the airport, private guests book the paid VIP service: catering is included at the VIP Terminal, and the VIP Transit Lounge serves an à la carte menu.
LIMOUSINE ON THE APRON
Driven to the steps
With the VIP service a limousine takes you between the VIP area and the aircraft, and handlers drive passengers across the apron from the GAT. Ask us in advance if your own car should follow a Fraport escort to the terminal.
LATE IN THE DAY
Watch the clock
The terminal is staffed from 06:00 to 22:00 as standard, and the airport closes to ordinary flights at 23:00. Aim to land well before 22:00 on the way in, and plan the flight home to leave with a margin before the night ban.
CREW REST
Lounges for pilots
Handlers have crew lounges and arrange hotels at special rates near the airport, so a crew can rest between a morning arrival and an evening return.
TAX FREE SHOPPING
Customs stamp in the GAT
Anyone living outside the EU may claim back German VAT on bigger purchases, but only after customs have confirmed the goods are leaving. Keep the items and the forms to hand and present them at the customs desk in the GAT before boarding.
AIRLINE ONE WAY
Lufthansa and British Airways
If an empty leg covers only one direction, Lufthansa flies from Terminal 1 and British Airways from the new Terminal 3 to London, and both terminals have lounges for their premium passengers. Terminal 3 is linked to Terminal 1 by the SkyLine train.

In practice the only real risks are the clock and the slot. Book the slot early, keep well clear of 23:00, and the rest of the GAT takes minutes.

Egelsbach: the business airfield south of Frankfurt

Egelsbach, officially Frankfurt Egelsbach, lies about 10 kilometres south east of Frankfurt Airport and 17 kilometres south of the city. With more than 80,000 movements a year it is the busiest general aviation airfield in Germany, and it is popular with light jets because it needs no airport slot and is less crowded than the main airport.

Codes QEF (IATA) and EDFE (ICAO)
Runway A paved runway, 08/26, of 1,400 metres, extended in 2004, and a grass strip of 670 metres
Hours From 08:00 until dusk, and after dusk until 21:00 at the latest with prior permission requested by early afternoon; in winter normal hours end at about 17:00
Border Customs and passport control for flights from outside Schengen are arranged in advance through the handler
Aircraft Commercial flights are limited to aircraft of up to 20 tonnes, so the airfield suits light and midsize jets such as the Phenom 300, the Citation CJ3 and the Citation XLS
Owner The TRIWO group, majority shareholder since January 2020, which also owns Hahn
Handling Business Aviation Centre Frankfurt has a base here, alongside more than 30 aviation companies
To the city About 25 minutes by car to the financial district and about 15 minutes to Frankfurt Airport

Egelsbach suits a light jet on a business day in Frankfurt, Darmstadt or the southern suburbs, and it avoids the slot system of the main airport. It is not the answer for a heavy jet, an arrival after dusk without prior permission, anything after 21:00 or a flight that needs a long runway on a hot summer day, and for those Frankfurt Airport is better.

Five things to know before booking Frankfurt

Each of these points changes either the price or the plan, so we settle them in every Frankfurt quote.

Nothing moves from 23:00 to 05:00
The night ban at Frankfurt Airport covers private jets as well as airlines. Germany is an hour ahead of Britain, so a flight of 1h 20m from London must be airborne by about 20:30 UK time to land before 23:00, and earlier still to allow for delays; later than that, land at Hahn instead.
Slots come first at FRA
Frankfurt is fully coordinated, and business aviation competes with the Lufthansa hub for capacity. In a trade fair week, request the slot as soon as the dates are fixed.
Egelsbach closes early
The airfield closes at dusk, or at 21:00 at the latest with prior permission requested by early afternoon, so an evening return from Egelsbach, especially in winter, needs an early departure or a switch to Frankfurt Airport.
Trade fairs fill the city
During the Book Fair or Ambiente, hotels, limousines and slots all run short, and prices for charters rise. Empty legs around the opening and closing days are the best value.
German tax on the way home
Germany's aviation tax applies to the departure from Frankfurt, so the flight home carries a German tax that the flight out does not.

From the airport to the city, the Taunus and the Rhine

Frankfurt Airport sits next to one of the busiest motorway junctions in Europe, so most destinations are quick to reach outside the rush hour, which here means weekday mornings and late afternoons.

Destination By car from Frankfurt Airport What is there
Messe and the Skyline Plaza About 15 minutes The exhibition grounds, the Festhalle and the congress centre
Financial district and Westend About 20 minutes The European Central Bank tower, the bank headquarters and the grand old villas of the Westend
Römerberg and the old town About 20 minutes The rebuilt old town, the cathedral and the Main riverside
Sachsenhausen About 20 minutes The museum embankment and the cider taverns
Darmstadt About 25 minutes The science city and the Mathildenhöhe artists' colony
Wiesbaden About 25 minutes The state capital, its spa, the casino and the Kurhaus
Mainz About 25 minutes The cathedral, the Gutenberg Museum and the Rhine
Kronberg and Königstein About 25 minutes Castle hotels and villas at the foot of the Taunus
Bad Homburg About 30 minutes The spa town, its park and the casino
Rheingau About 40 minutes The vineyards of Eltville, Kloster Eberbach and the castles along the Rhine
Heidelberg About 1 hour The castle, the old university and the Neckar valley

From Egelsbach the drive to the financial district takes about 25 minutes. The airport's long distance station also puts Cologne less than an hour away by ICE, which some travellers prefer to a second flight.

Taxes and charges on a Frankfurt trip

Besides the aircraft, three charges matter on a Frankfurt trip: British duty on the way out, German tax on the way home and the city's contribution on hotel nights.

UK duty
Air Passenger Duty on the flight out of Britain, Band A, for jets of 5.7 tonnes or more
German aviation tax
13.03 euros a passenger on a commercial departure from Germany to the UK since July 2026
City contribution
2 euros a person a night in Frankfurt hotels, for business and leisure guests alike
Airport and handling
Fraport's charges and the handler's fee, included by the operator in the price of the flight

Germany's Luftverkehrsteuer is charged on commercial departures from German airports, and a charter, including an empty leg sold to passengers, counts as commercial. Since 1 July 2026 the rate for a destination in Britain has been 13.03 euros for each person on board, with babies under two who sit on a parent's lap going free. The flight into Frankfurt pays no German tax.

On the British side, the duty is collected only when you leave the UK. Destinations in Germany sit in Band A, which for private jets weighing from 5.7 up to 20 tonnes means 32 GBP a head until the end of March 2027, while bigger jets pay 142 GBP; on 1 April 2027 a single rate of 146.63 GBP takes over for every private jet from 5.7 tonnes upwards. Jets under that weight pay no duty at all, the Channel Islands are outside the scheme, and departures from Scotland move to the Scottish Air Departure Tax in April 2027. Frankfurt has charged its tourism contribution of 2 euros a night to business travellers too since October 2024.

Egelsbach, Hahn and the other airports around Frankfurt

The Rhine and Main region has several airports that business jets use. They matter when a slot is short, when the night ban bites or when the trip ends somewhere other than Frankfurt.

Frankfurt Airport, EDDF. The main airport, with four runways, the GAT and every service, but with slots and a strict night ban from 23:00 to 05:00.
Egelsbach, EDFE. The general aviation airfield 10 kilometres south east of Frankfurt Airport, with a 1,400 metre runway, no slots and hours until dusk, or until 21:00 at the latest by prior permission.
Hahn, EDFH. The former Frankfurt Hahn, about 120 kilometres west in the Hunsrück, with a 3,800 metre runway, a licence to operate around the clock and its own general aviation terminal, run by TRIWO and open 24 hours. The usual answer for a late night arrival, although the drive to Frankfurt takes about 1h 30m.
Mannheim, EDFM. A city airport about 80 kilometres south with a runway of 1,066 metres, used by the corporate jets of companies such as SAP, and convenient for Heidelberg.
Cologne Bonn, EDDK. About 160 kilometres north west by road, with its own general aviation terminal, and less than an hour from Frankfurt Airport by ICE train.

Popular routes between the UK and Frankfurt, and which way they run empty

Prices here buy the complete jet, never a seat, on a positioning trip that is already scheduled, and the durations leave out taxiing and time on the ground. Frankfurt is only about 650 kilometres from London, so even the smallest jets make the trip easily, from a Citation M2 on the Southampton and Jersey routes to a Challenger 350 or a Legacy 500 for larger groups. For fixed dates, the second list near the start gives the full charter price of each aircraft.

Route In the air Empty leg from Season Which way it usually runs empty

Sectors between London and Frankfurt bunch on Monday mornings and Thursday and Friday evenings, when business trips begin and end, and in the days around the opening and closing of the big fairs. Operators based around the Rhine and Main often decide on a return to Britain the evening before, which is when those sectors reach our board.

Arriving in Germany from Britain: passports and customs

Germany is in the EU and in Schengen, and Britain is in neither, so every private flight between them crosses the EU's external border. The federal police check passports in the GAT, and German customs may inspect the bags.

  • Passport. The federal police look at two dates: the passport must be under ten years old and must not expire until three months after you plan to exit the Schengen zone.
  • Time allowed. Holders of British passports get 90 days in every rolling 180 for the Schengen countries as a group, so nights spent in France, Switzerland or Austria on the same journey use up the same allowance.
  • EES. Passports are no longer stamped: the EU's Entry/Exit System, fully in place since April 2026, stores a photograph of each traveller and the fingerprints of everyone aged twelve or over.
  • ETIAS. British travellers do not need the new EU travel permit yet. In July 2026 its start was put back to 2027, and it will then cost 20 euros and last three years.
  • Duty free limits. On arrival from Britain each adult may bring 200 cigarettes, 16 litres of beer, 4 litres of still wine and either 1 litre of spirits or 2 litres of sparkling or fortified wine, with other goods worth up to 430 euros.
  • Cash and food. A cash sum from 10,000 euros upwards goes on a customs declaration, and the EU ban on meat and dairy from outside means British ham, bacon and cheddar stay at home.
  • Back in Britain. On a private flight home each adult may bring 200 cigarettes, 4 litres of spirits, 18 litres of wine, 42 litres of beer and 270 GBP of other goods without duty; from 1 October 2026 sparkling wine falls within the wine allowance and cider within the beer allowance.

Three situations, three answers

A day of meetings in the financial district
Leave London at 07:00, land at 09:20 local time, be in the Westend by ten, and fly home at 18:00 to be back in London for dinner. The aircraft can wait at Frankfurt for the day, or fly home and return, and either leg may appear on our board.
Three days at the Book Fair
Book early, because slots, hotels and cars all run short. Fly in on the opening morning and home on the last afternoon, and look for empty legs out of Frankfurt on the opening day and into it on the closing day.
A wine weekend in the Rheingau
Land at Frankfurt or Egelsbach on Friday afternoon, stay in a castle hotel above the Rhine, and fly home on Sunday before the evening rush. The jet usually flies home after the drop and returns empty for the pickup.

Flying to Frankfurt with a dog or a cat

Dogs and cats entering Germany from Britain must be microchipped and vaccinated against rabies at least three weeks before departure, and must travel with an animal health certificate completed by an official vet within the ten days before landing. Pet passports from EU countries stopped being accepted for animals of British residents in April 2026, so the certificate is now the only route. Germany does not require tapeworm treatment on the way in, and Frankfurt Airport is a travellers' point of entry for pets, with its own animal station, so tell the handler about the animal in advance and land at Frankfurt rather than Egelsbach.

Dog in the cabin of a private jet to Frankfurt

The return to Britain needs more planning. Only an operator approved to carry pets into Britain may bring the animal home, and a dog needs tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 hours and five days before landing. Vets in Frankfurt and Wiesbaden see this request often; book the appointment when you book the flight and tell us about the animal from the start, so we quote only operators that carry pets.

Flying privately to Frankfurt: common questions

Frankfurt Airport or Egelsbach?
Frankfurt Airport suits every jet, has the GAT and the airport's VIP services and is open until 23:00. Egelsbach suits light and midsize jets, needs no slot and is closer to the southern suburbs, but it closes at dusk, or at 21:00 at the latest with prior permission.
How long is the flight to Frankfurt?
About 1h 20m from London and Biggin Hill, 1h 25m from Farnborough, Oxford and Southampton, 1h 30m to 1h 40m from Jersey, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool and Newcastle, and 1h 50m to 2h 00m from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Dublin and Belfast.
Can I land at Frankfurt at night?
No. Frankfurt Airport is closed to ordinary flights, private jets included, between 23:00 and 05:00. For a later arrival, Hahn is open around the clock, about 1h 30m from Frankfurt by car.
What does an empty leg to Frankfurt cost?
Our cheapest sectors are a Citation M2 from Frankfurt to Southampton at about 2,400 GBP and another from Frankfurt to Jersey at about 2,600 GBP, both for the whole aircraft. As ordinary charters on dates you choose, the eighteen routes in our table would cost between roughly 5,800 GBP and 15,700 GBP.
Is there a German tax on a private flight?
Yes, when a charter leaves Germany. Heading for Britain, each traveller pays 13.03 euros in aviation tax, while arriving in Frankfurt costs nothing extra.
How quick is the GAT on arrival?
Much quicker than an airline terminal, because passport control, customs and the bags are all handled in the same small building. The only waits come when the officers are busy with another flight.
How far is the city from the airport?
About 15 minutes by car to the Messe and 20 minutes to the financial district or the old town, or about 12 minutes by S Bahn to the main station.
Do British visitors need a visa for Germany?
No visa is required for a holiday or a business trip. The Schengen limit of 90 days in 180 applies, and the new ETIAS permit has not started yet.
Can a car come to the aircraft at Frankfurt?
Handlers drive passengers between the GAT and the aircraft, and with the airport's VIP service a limousine takes you to the steps. A private car can also be escorted to the GAT by a Fraport vehicle if arranged in advance.
And if nothing is released for my dates?
Tell us when you want to fly, by how many days the plan can move and who is coming. With so many business jets based around Frankfurt and flying to Britain every week, a matching sector usually appears within a few days.

Call +44 7857 574938 , message the same number on WhatsApp , or write to flight@empty-leg.co.uk . Tell us the dates, how many are travelling, the luggage and where in the Rhine and Main region you are going. You will receive the matching sectors and the full charter price of each, and we take care of the slot, the GAT handler, the VIP service if wanted and the chauffeur.
