Empty leg flights to and from Innsbruck

Innsbruck is the capital of the Tyrol and the doorway to some of the best known ski resorts in the Alps: Seefeld is half an hour from its airport, St Anton, Ischgl, Sölden, Kitzbühel and the Zillertal between one hour and an hour and a half, and Lech a little more. The airport, known locally as Kranebitten, lies on the floor of the Inn Valley about 4 kilometres west of the old town, with mountains of more than 2,000 metres on both sides, and it is one of the most demanding airports in Europe for the pilots who fly into it.

From London the flight takes about 1h 50m. In winter, when Britain supplies more than 60 per cent of the airport's guests, private jets bring families and ski groups out for the Saturday changeover and for long weekends, and a local rule that allows a private aircraft no more than an hour on the ground from Thursday evening to Sunday evening sends most of them straight home empty. Those flights home, and the empty sectors that return a week later to collect the same passengers, are the empty legs listed below.

Empty legs to and from Innsbruck right now

The board lists every sector touching Innsbruck, and under it the flights from Salzburg, Munich, Bolzano and Friedrichshafen, the other airports within a drive of the Tyrolean resorts. The charter list beneath the board gives the normal price of the same aircraft between Britain and Innsbruck, so the saving on an empty leg is plain to see.

Ask us what is available at Innsbruck right now.

This board refreshes through the day as operators release sectors, and it shows only part of the market: a large share of repositioning flights never reach a public list at all. Check back shortly, or tell us your route and dates and we will look at what operators are holding at this moment.

Sectors on this list do not touch Innsbruck itself. They are shown because the fields are close enough that the drive rarely costs you more than waiting for the right sector does. Tell us which one interests you and we will confirm it is still open.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.

Set up an alert for Innsbruck

Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up between the UK and Innsbruck.

Please fill in both the departure and the arrival city.

Nothing is stored on this site. The button opens a chat with the message already written, and you send it yourself. We reply during office hours, 07:00 to 23:00, and check messages outside them too.

Where Innsbruck sectors come from

Three patterns keep aircraft moving through Innsbruck with empty cabins, and the first of them outweighs the other two.

The Saturday changeover
Chalets and hotels in the Tyrolean resorts are let by the week from Saturday to Saturday, and British families and ski groups travel on those days. A jet that brings a party out on a Saturday may not wait for it under the winter parking rule, so it flies home empty the same day and comes back empty a week later to collect the group, and both of those flights can be sold.
Long weekends in the snow
Couples and small groups fly out on Thursday or Friday for three or four days on the slopes and go home on Sunday or Monday. The aircraft repositions in between, which puts sectors to Britain on the board late in the week and sectors to Innsbruck at the start of the next.
Summer in the Tyrol
From June to September the lakes and mountain huts, golf at Seefeld and the European Forum Alpbach in August bring a smaller, steadier flow of private flights, with fewer sectors on the board but less competition for each of them.

Plenty of the sectors touching Innsbruck link it with Vienna, Zurich, Paris and Amsterdam rather than with Britain. A traveller who can begin or end the trip in one of those cities has more to choose from, especially outside the school holidays.

Seasonal demand for repositioning flights

Innsbruck Airport in detail

Innsbruck is one of the airports where the operator has to confirm that its crew is cleared for the approach before it accepts the flight, so that check is where every arrival we plan begins. The points below govern a landing in the valley.

Codes and name INN (IATA), LOWI (ICAO). Officially Innsbruck Airport, and widely called Kranebitten after the western part of the city where it stands.
Location About 4 kilometres west of the old town, on the valley floor between the Nordkette range to the north and the mountains south of the city, with peaks above 2,000 metres on both sides.
History Innsbruck's first airfield opened at Reichenau, on the eastern edge of the city, on 1 June 1925. The French occupying forces built a new airport on the Ulfiswiese west of the city, which opened on 15 January 1948, and the present terminal and runway, on the southern side of the same meadow, were commissioned on 24 April 1965.
Owner Tiroler Flughafenbetriebsgesellschaft, owned 51 per cent by the municipal utility IKB and 24.5 per cent each by the Land of Tyrol and the City of Innsbruck. The same company handles private flights through its General Aviation Center.
Runway A single runway, 08/26, 2,000 metres long and 45 metres wide, at 581 metres above sea level, with 1,940 metres available for landing in either direction.
The approach Operators class Innsbruck as a category C airport. Crews must study a briefing on its procedures, and before flying them in cloud below 3,000 feet or visibility under 5 kilometres they must have practised them on site or in a simulator. From the east the approach follows the valley in from Rattenberg; from the west the descent is unusually steep, at 4.7 degrees.
Föhn When the warm, gusty föhn blows from the south, a special procedure brings aircraft in to runway 08 from the west along the upper Inn Valley, where the turbulence is weaker.
Hours for private flights 6.30 am to 8 pm local time, with customs, handling, fuel and de-icing across the same hours. The airport allows a commercially operated jet that is quieter on landing than a Dash 8 to arrive until 11 pm, which can rescue a late charter from Britain, but it has to be arranged in advance.
Winter slots In the winter season every private flight on a Saturday or Sunday needs a slot, which Slot Coordination Austria issues on request from 28 days ahead until an hour before the flight. On weekdays and throughout the summer no slot is needed, but parking and ground time can still be limited.
Winter parking From Thursday evening to Sunday evening in the winter season a private aircraft may stay on the ground for no more than 60 minutes, so a jet that brings a party at the weekend drops it and leaves.
Traffic 882,876 passengers in 2025, a little over 60 per cent of them in winter, with London the leading destination and up to about 17,500 travellers passing through on the busiest days.
Movements Airline and charter traffic accounted for 7,516 movements in 2025. Everything else the tower works is general aviation, flight training and gliding, including the grass strip used by gliders, so private flying is everyday business here.
Snow Six snow ploughs working in formation can clear the whole runway in about eight minutes, so heavy snow brings short pauses rather than a closure.
Fuel Supplied by Air BP and paid by fuel release, in cash or with a BP card; credit cards are not accepted.
Formalities Austria is in the Schengen area and Britain is not, so passports are checked in both directions and the Entry/Exit System registers each British traveller at the first crossing.
Getting away By car to the old town in about 10 minutes, to Seefeld in 30 to 35 minutes, to St Anton or Ischgl in 1 hour to 1h 30m and to Kitzbühel in about 1h 20m to 1h 30m.

Innsbruck is our first choice for the Tyrol. We move a flight to Salzburg for Kitzbühel when Innsbruck has no slot, to Friedrichshafen or Memmingen for the Arlberg when the timing suits, and to Munich when a larger aircraft or a longer stay on the ground is needed.

Where private passengers are handled at Innsbruck

At Innsbruck the airport company handles private flights itself through its General Aviation Center, so crews and passengers deal with a single desk whichever operator flies the aircraft.

The airport's own FBO
The GAC is the airport's own FBO for private jets, business jets, air taxis and company aircraft. It takes care of handling, permissions and fees for visiting aircraft, and private passengers pass through it rather than through the airline terminal.
Lounges, security and customs
Private passengers have lounges of their own at the GAC, and security and passport control are handled in the same building, so a party with skis and boot bags stays clear of the queues in the main terminal on a busy Saturday.
A room for the crew
Pilots have a crew room on the first floor of the General Aviation Center for the time between flights, which on a winter weekend is rarely more than an hour.
One operations desk
The GAC's operations desk handles parking, fees and the permission to land, and it is where crews ask for the sample briefing they need before a first flight into the valley. The weekend slot itself is requested from Slot Coordination Austria.
Meals from Cloud Number 9
Cloud Number 9 is the caterer the airport lists for private flights. Meals for the aircraft are ordered through the handler, ideally the day before, and on a Saturday morning it pays to order early.
Fuel paid in advance
Air BP supplies the fuel and takes payment only by fuel release, in cash or with a BP card, which the operator arranges before the flight so that nothing holds up the turnaround.
Frost on a winter morning
De-icing is available in the same hours as handling, from 6.30 am, and on a cold, clear morning it is worth allowing extra time before an early departure.
Escorted to the aircraft
The airport's rules require reflective clothing on the movement areas, and the only people excused are those walking with someone who is wearing it. So a member of staff in a high visibility vest walks you the short distance between the GAC and the steps, or the apron service drives you across when traffic on the apron calls for it.
No desks, no belt
The GAC has no check in counters and no baggage reclaim. Staff take the bags, ski bags and boot bags at the door, load them straight into the hold, and on arrival bring them back the same way, out to the boot of the car.
An agent behind the scenes
Some operators bring in a supervising agent, Magnum among them, to handle the paperwork and the permissions, while the aircraft and the passengers are looked after on the ground by the airport's own staff.
The Saturday squeeze
On a winter Saturday the airline side of the airport handles thousands of British skiers, and slots and stands for private jets go early. Our requests go in on the day the flight is booked, and the aircraft's onward departure is planned before it leaves Britain.

Every quote we send confirms the slot, the parking plan and the crew's clearance for Innsbruck, and we pass on the passenger list and the transfer details so that the GAC and the driver are ready when the engines stop.

The terminal from a passenger's side

A private arrival at Innsbruck is short; what needs planning is the road, the weather and the day of the week. The cards run in the order of the trip: the arrival, the road to the resort, the practical side of a stay in the mountains and, last, the flight home.

ARRIVAL
Through the GAC, not the halls
The aircraft parks near the General Aviation Center, passports and customs are handled inside it, and a party is usually through the building and into the car within minutes of the engines stopping.
DOCUMENTS
What Austria checks
At the Austrian border a British passport has to pass two tests: it must be less than ten years old on the day you land, and it must stay valid for three months after your planned exit from the Schengen area. Stays are capped at 90 days in any 180, and the first entry under the Entry/Exit System takes a photograph and, from the age of 12, fingerprints.
SKIS AND BOOTS
Room in the hold
Tell us how many ski bags, boot bags and snowboards are coming. A Phenom 300 or a Citation CJ3 takes the kit of a small party, a Citation XLS+ or a Legacy 500 suits a family of six to eight with full equipment, and a large group may need two aircraft or skis sent on ahead.
THE CAR
Ten minutes at the door
The General Aviation Center has its own entrance on the Fürstenweg and parking in front of it, with the first ten minutes free, so the driver can pull up at the door. For a longer wait there is a payment machine at the entrance, and the airport has 450 outdoor spaces and 1,200 more in the multi storey car park.
FOOD
Nothing much to eat at the airport
There is no restaurant on the private side. In the airline terminal next door a bakery opens at 5 am, there is a coffee bar from the same hour and the Fly Inn Bistro serves from 10 am to 5.30 pm, but for a private flight we normally put catering on board instead, ordered the day before.
THE ROAD
A12, A13 and the Arlberg
The A12 motorway runs up the Inn Valley towards the Arlberg, the Ötztal and the Zillertal, and the A13 climbs south to the Brenner. Austrian motorways need a vignette, which hire cars collected in Austria normally carry.
WINTER TYRES
The rule from November
Between 1 November and 15 April a car must run on winter tyres whenever there is snow, slush or ice on the road, or carry chains on at least two driven wheels where the road is fully covered. A chauffeur's car will be ready for it; a hire car you drive yourself is worth checking at the desk.
TIMING
On the slopes by the afternoon
Take off from London at 8 am and it is about 10.50 am in Innsbruck when you land, early enough for an afternoon on the slopes of a resort near the city. Going home, a 4 pm departure from Innsbruck reaches London at about 4.50 pm UK time.
SATURDAYS
Changeover day
On a winter Saturday British charter flights arrive one after another and the roads to the resorts fill with coaches. An early landing, or a Friday or Sunday flight, avoids both, and an aircraft that is already booked in for the day often has an empty sector to sell.
WEATHER
Föhn, fog and low cloud
A strong föhn can bring gusts and turbulence, and in winter an inversion can hold low cloud in the valley for hours. If Innsbruck cannot be used, the flight diverts, usually to Munich or Salzburg, and the car is sent there instead.
HELICOPTER
Over the Arlberg by air
Helicopter operators such as Wucher fly from Innsbruck Airport to St Anton, and a transfer to the Arlberg takes about 20 minutes in the air, or half an hour door to door, against an hour or more by road. The flight ends at an approved landing site, with a car for the last few minutes.
TOURIST TAX
Collected with the room
Every Tyrolean municipality charges a tax per guest per night, from 2.60 to 5 euros depending on the resort: 4 euros in Innsbruck since May 2026, 5 euros in the Ötztal and at St Anton, and 2.60 to 3.20 euros in the Zillertal. Lech and Zürs lie just over the border in Vorarlberg and set their own rate.
TAX FREE
Austrian VAT on the way out
British residents can reclaim Austrian VAT on purchases of at least 75.01 euros on a single invoice. Keep the goods unused and with you in the cabin, and have the forms confirmed by customs before you leave Austria.
BY AIRLINE
One direction on a scheduled flight
British Airways, easyJet, Jet2 and TUI fly to Innsbruck from London and several other British airports in the ski season. For airline passengers the airport sells a VIP arrival, met at the aircraft and escorted through passport control, from 464.86 euros for two.
AIRLINE LOUNGE
The Tyrol Lounge
On the airline side, the Tyrol Lounge on the first floor by gates 11 and 12 opens from 5 am to 7 pm, costs 46.50 euros for up to two and a half hours and is free for British Airways Club passengers.
ONWARD
Another resort by jet
From Innsbruck, Salzburg is about 35 minutes away by jet, Zurich about 50 minutes and Vienna about an hour, so one trip can take in a city as well as the Tyrol.
DEPARTURE
Home within the slot
Plan to be at the General Aviation Center about 30 minutes before departure. On a winter weekend the slot is fixed and the aircraft cannot wait long, so traffic on the A12 is the real risk, and we set the pickup time with that in mind.

The minutes at the airport look after themselves. The slot, the weather and the roads decide how smooth the day feels, and we plan all three before the flight is confirmed.

Four rules that shape an Innsbruck trip

Crews cleared for the valley
Only crews who have studied the airport's briefing, and have flown the procedures on site in good weather or practised them in a simulator, may fly the instrument approaches when the cloud is below 3,000 feet or the visibility under 5 kilometres, so the choice of aircraft on a given day depends on which operators are cleared. We check it before we quote.
Half past six to eight
Private flights use Innsbruck between 6.30 am and 8 pm. A departure from Britain that slips late in the day can miss the window, so we build in a margin and name the diversion airport in advance.
A slot for every winter weekend
On winter Saturdays and Sundays each private flight needs a slot, which can be requested from 28 days ahead. On the busiest Saturdays of February and the Christmas holidays they go early.
An hour on the ground
Between Thursday evening and Sunday evening in the winter season, an hour is the most a private jet may spend on the stand. It drops you, leaves and comes back for you later, which is exactly why so many empty legs start and end at Innsbruck.

Each of the four is settled when the flight is booked, and each one is written into the confirmation we send.

What the ground costs at Innsbruck

Airport charges are a small part of a Tyrol trip; Austria's departure levy and British duty are the items worth knowing about.

On the invoice
Landing and parking charges and the handling fee of the General Aviation Center, set by the airport company, plus fuel and any de-icing, normally all included in the charter price we quote
Austrian flight levy
12 euros for every passenger departing from Innsbruck on a flight of 350 kilometres or more, which covers every route to Britain, charged on aircraft of more than 2 tonnes and paid by the operator
Air Passenger Duty
Band A: 32 GBP a passenger on a private jet of 5.7 to 20 tonnes, which covers every aircraft on our Innsbruck routes, and 142 GBP on jets of 20 tonnes or more, on flights leaving the UK

British duty applies only on departure from the UK, Belfast included, and not from Jersey or Guernsey. From April 2027 the higher rate is due to cover every private jet of 5.7 tonnes or more, which would take the duty on the aircraft we list for Innsbruck from 32 GBP to 146.63 GBP a head.

The Austrian levy is modest by comparison: a family of six flying home pays 72 euros in all, and a jet arriving from Britain pays nothing on the way in. The tourist tax of the resort, collected with the chalet or hotel bill, never passes through the flight invoice.

Salzburg, Munich and the other airports around the Tyrol

Several other airports can serve a trip to the Tyrol, and the right one depends on the resort, the size of the aircraft and the day of the week.

Salzburg, SZG. About two hours east of Innsbruck by road and closer to Kitzbühel, Saalbach and Zell am See, with a runway of 2,750 metres and busy ski charter Saturdays of its own. When Innsbruck's weekend slots are gone, it is the first place we look.
Munich, MUC. Germany's second busiest airport, about two hours by road from Innsbruck, with two long runways and a terminal for private aviation. It takes the largest jets, has room to park them, and is the usual fallback when weather closes the Inn Valley.
Bolzano, BZO. In South Tyrol, about 1h 30m from Innsbruck over the Brenner, with a runway of 1,432 metres that suits light and some midsize jets. It is the airport for the Dolomites and Val Gardena.
Friedrichshafen, FDH. On Lake Constance in Germany, with a runway of about 2,350 metres, roughly 1h 45m to 2 hours by road from Lech and St Anton, and often calmer than Innsbruck on a winter Saturday.
Memmingen, FMM. In Bavaria, with a runway of almost 3,000 metres and roughly two hours by road from the Arlberg, useful when a larger aircraft has to reach Lech or St Anton.
St Johann in Tirol, LOIJ. A small airfield about a quarter of an hour from Kitzbühel, with a runway of 750 metres open only to aircraft up to 5.7 tonnes, which rules out jets but suits light aircraft and helicopters.

From Innsbruck Airport to the resorts

The times below are typical drives from the airport in dry conditions. Snow, Saturday traffic and the queues at the resort entrances can add a great deal in winter.

Destination By road Notes
Innsbruck old town About 10 minutes The Golden Roof and the Hofburg
Seefeld 30 to 35 minutes Cross country skiing and golf on the plateau
Mayrhofen About 1 hour The heart of the Zillertal
Hintertux About 1h 25m Glacier skiing at the head of the Zillertal
St Anton 1 hour to 1h 15m Along the A12 towards the Arlberg
Ischgl 1 hour to 1h 30m Through Landeck into the Paznaun
Lech and Zürs 1h 30m to 1h 40m Over the Flexen Pass beyond St Anton
Sölden 1h 15m to 1h 20m Up the Ötztal
Obergurgl 1h 30m to 1h 45m At the head of the Ötztal
Kitzbühel 1h 20m to 1h 30m Past Wörgl and through the Brixental
Selva, Val Gardena About 1h 45m Over the Brenner into Italy
Munich Airport About 2 hours The usual weather alternative
Salzburg Airport About 2 hours Closer to Kitzbühel and Saalbach

We book the car or the helicopter once the slot is confirmed, and on a Saturday we choose a landing time that keeps the drive clear of the worst of the traffic.

Popular routes between the UK and Innsbruck, and which way they run empty

The empty leg column prices the entire aircraft shown in the charter list, on a sector that is flying anyway. The times are for the flight itself, the Austrian levy is added on the way home and British duty on the way out, and the charter list gives the full price for dates you pick yourself.

Leeds to Innsbruck 2h 05m 6,600 GBP February Occasional, out for a pickup
Innsbruck to Newcastle 2h 10m 6,800 GBP Winter Home after a ski week drop
Edinburgh to Innsbruck 2h 20m 8,400 GBP February and Easter Out to collect a Scottish party
Innsbruck to Glasgow 2h 25m 7,600 GBP Winter Home after a changeover drop
Belfast to Innsbruck 2h 25m 7,600 GBP February Occasional, out to bring a group home
Innsbruck to Dublin 2h 20m 8,400 GBP December and February Home after an Irish family drop
Cardiff to Innsbruck 2h 00m 4,700 GBP Winter Occasional, out to collect a party
Innsbruck to Aberdeen 2h 25m 7,600 GBP Winter Occasional, home after a drop

Innsbruck sectors are released most often on winter Saturdays and Sundays, frequently only a few days ahead, and far more of them link the Tyrol with the London airports than with Scotland or Ireland. Flexibility of a day either side of the changeover makes the biggest difference.

Arriving in Innsbruck from the UK

Private passengers clear Austrian passport control and customs inside the General Aviation Center. The points below set out the paperwork, what you may carry each way and the Austrian levy.

  • Passport. Issued no more than ten years before your arrival date and valid for at least three months beyond the day you intend to leave the Schengen area; a passport close to either limit is best renewed before the trip is booked.
  • Days in Schengen. British visitors may spend 90 days in any rolling 180 in the Schengen area without a visa; time already spent in Austria, Switzerland, France or any other member country within that window is included.
  • Entry/Exit System. In full operation at Schengen borders since 10 April 2026. A British traveller's first entry is recorded with a photograph and, over the age of 12, fingerprints, and the record then stays valid for three years.
  • ETIAS. Not yet in force, and the EU has promised several months' notice of the start. Each approval is planned to cost 20 euros and to cover three years, ending sooner if the passport runs out.
  • Allowances into Austria. Travellers aged 17 and over coming from Britain may bring in 200 cigarettes, 1 litre of spirits or 2 litres of fortified or sparkling wine, 4 litres of still wine and 16 litres of beer, and other goods up to 430 euros. No British meat or dairy may be carried in, and any sum of 10,000 euros or more in cash has to be declared.
  • Austrian levy. 12 euros for each passenger on the flight home, included in the charter price by the operator.
  • Back to Britain. Each adult may bring 200 cigarettes, 4 litres of spirits, 18 litres of wine, with sparkling wine counted in that total from 1 October 2026, and 42 litres of beer, plus 270 GBP of other goods. Tyrolean speck, sausages and mountain cheese have to stay behind, because meat and dairy from the EU may not be brought into Great Britain.

Empty leg calendar for Innsbruck, month by month

Innsbruck has one great season and one quieter one. Winter runs from the first glacier weekends in autumn to the last spring snow in April, and summer brings a smaller flow of lakes, mountains and conferences.

The usual number of sectors between Innsbruck and Britain in each month, and the typical gap between their price and a full charter.

January
Very busyStrong
The Four Hills ski jumping comes to the Bergisel on 2 and 3 January 2027 and the Hahnenkamm races fill Kitzbühel from 18 to 24 January. After New Year jets fly out empty to collect families, one of the best moments of the year for a sector out.
February
Very busyStrong
Half term weeks in England, Scotland and Ireland make February the peak of the season; winter Saturdays are fully booked and sectors home after each Saturday drop are plentiful.
March
BusyGood
Spring snow and longer days keep the resorts full, and with Easter Sunday on 28 March 2027 the holiday rush starts at the end of the month.
April
BusyGood
The Easter holidays run into April and the high resorts, Obergurgl and Ischgl among them, stay open until late in the month, so sectors run both ways until the season closes.
May
QuietThin
The gap between the seasons: the ski lifts close, the summer has not started and private flights are few.
June
SteadyFair
Summer opens with walking, climbing and the lakes, and the first summer families arrive for a week in the mountains.
July
SteadyFair
The busiest summer month, with the ATP tennis tournament in Kitzbühel and school holidays across Europe bringing family flights.
August
SteadyFair
The European Forum Alpbach draws politicians and business leaders to the Alpbach valley, and families fill the lakes and mountain resorts.
September
QuietThin
Autumn walking and conferences in Innsbruck keep a few flights moving, but it is one of the quietest months at the airport.
October
SteadyFair
The glacier ski areas are running and the World Cup season starts at Sölden on 24 and 25 October 2026, with half term at the end of the month.
November
SteadyGood
Christmas markets open in Innsbruck in the middle of November and the big resorts start their season towards the end of the month, when operators begin moving aircraft into position.
December
Very busyStrong
The first big Saturdays of the season before Christmas, then the holiday itself: jets fly families out, go home empty and return empty after New Year.

For a flight out, watch the first days of January and the Saturdays after each half term week. For a flight home, look at Saturday afternoons from December to April, when jets return to Britain after the morning drops.

Three situations, three answers

A half term week in St Anton
Ask for the Saturday slot on the day the window opens, 28 days before the flight, and expect the jet to leave within the hour of landing. The empty legs on that route run home on the Saturday afternoon and out again the following Saturday morning, so a family able to move by a day can often use one.
The Hahnenkamm weekend
Race week in January fills Innsbruck and Salzburg alike. Salzburg is a little closer to Kitzbühel and needs no special crew clearance, Innsbruck has far more traffic and so more sectors that may come free, and a helicopter can cover the last stretch from either; we price both before you choose.
A long weekend from London
Leave London at 8 am on a Thursday and you land at about 10.50 am, in time for an afternoon on the snow near Innsbruck. The aircraft cannot wait over the weekend, so it flies home and returns for you on Sunday or Monday, and those two positioning flights are among the sectors most often released.

Flying to Innsbruck with a dog or a cat

Austria applies the EU rules to pets arriving from Britain: an animal health certificate signed by an official vet in the ten days before the flight, a microchip, and a rabies jab given 21 days or more before travel. EU pet passports held by people living in Britain stopped counting on 22 April 2026. In the Tyrol, dogs must be on a lead or muzzled in built up areas, and on buses and trains they need both, so pack a muzzle even for a small dog. Dogs are allowed inside the terminal on a lead.

The return journey is the stricter half. Great Britain lets pets in only with an operator approved to carry them on that route, and a dog must have a tapeworm treatment from a vet one to five days before it lands. Innsbruck and the larger resorts have vets used to travelling pets, so book the visit with the flight, and mention the animal in your first message so that we only suggest operators who can take it.

Questions about flying private to Innsbruck

Which UK airports have the shortest flight to Innsbruck?
Biggin Hill, at about 1h 45m, then the other London airports and Jersey at about 1h 50m. From Bristol and Cardiff allow 2 hours, from Manchester 2h 05m, and from Scotland, Belfast and Dublin 2h 20m to 2h 25m.
Why do pilots need special training for Innsbruck?
The airport lies in a narrow Alpine valley, the approach from the west is unusually steep and the föhn can make the air rough. That is why a crew must study the airport's briefing and, before flying the approach in poor weather, either fly it here in good conditions or practise it in a simulator.
When can private jets use Innsbruck?
Between 6.30 am and 8 pm local time. Landings between 8 and 11 pm are open only to commercially operated jets quieter than a Dash 8, and have to be agreed beforehand.
Where can we eat before an evening flight?
There is nothing on the private side beyond the lounge. The airline terminal next door has a bakery and a coffee bar from 5 am and a bistro that closes at 5.30 pm, and the old town is ten minutes away; for an evening flight the simpler answer is catering on board, ordered the day before.
Can our car come to the terminal door?
Yes, right up to the door of the General Aviation Center, which has its own entrance and a car park in front. Out on the apron it is different: reflective clothing is required there, so a member of staff walks you to the aircraft or the apron service drives you across.
Do we need a slot to fly privately into Innsbruck?
On winter Saturdays and Sundays, yes. Slot Coordination Austria takes the request from 28 days ahead until an hour before the flight, and on busy weekends it pays to ask on the first day possible.
Why can our jet not wait for us at Innsbruck?
Winter rules at Innsbruck cap a private aircraft's stay at one hour for most of the weekend. So the jet heads home or to another airport and comes back for the pickup, and those two positioning flights are what we sell as empty legs.
What does an empty leg to or from Innsbruck cost?
A whole Citation CJ3 flying empty from Innsbruck to Biggin Hill starts at about 3,800 GBP, and a Citation XLS+ from London to Innsbruck at about 5,800 GBP, against roughly 9,100 to 20,000 GBP to charter the same aircraft on our listed routes for your own dates.
How far are St Anton and Ischgl from the airport?
Both are about an hour to an hour and a half by road, depending on snow and traffic, and a helicopter covers the same ground in about 20 minutes, or half an hour door to door.
Is Salzburg a better airport for Kitzbühel?
It is slightly closer, and it is the obvious choice when Innsbruck has no slot. From Innsbruck the drive to Kitzbühel takes about 1h 20m to 1h 30m.
What happens if the weather closes Innsbruck?
The flight diverts, usually to Munich or Salzburg, about two hours from Innsbruck by road, and we move the car or helicopter to meet you there.
Is there an Austrian tax on private flights?
Austria charges a levy of 12 euros on each passenger departing on a flight of 350 kilometres or more, private jets over 2 tonnes included, so every flight home to Britain pays it; arrivals pay nothing.
Can we bring our dog to the Tyrol?
Yes, with a microchip, a rabies vaccination at least three weeks old and an animal health certificate issued within ten days of travel. In towns the dog needs a lead or a muzzle, and for the flight home an operator approved to carry pets.
And if nothing is released for my dates?
Send the resort, your travel dates and the room you have to move them, and we will keep watch on Innsbruck, Salzburg and Munich and write when a sector fits, most often on the Saturdays either side of a half term week and just after New Year.

Call +44 7857 574938 , message the same number on WhatsApp , or write to flight@empty-leg.co.uk . Give us the resort, the dates, how many are travelling with how many ski and boot bags, and whether a dog or cat is coming, and the reply will list matching sectors, the full charter price and a plan for the slot and the transfer.
