Empty leg flights to and from London

London is the densest private aviation market in Europe. Tens of thousands of business aviation movements a year pass through Farnborough, Luton, Biggin Hill and Stansted alone, before you count Northolt, London City and the fields in the wider ring. Every one way charter that lands here leaves an aircraft that has to go somewhere, and every departure leaves one that has to come back.

That is why empty legs exist here at a scale found almost nowhere else in Britain.

Six airports
plus two heliports and a wider ring of fields
25 to 75%
below the charter price of the same aircraft
Daily
sectors appear on London routes every day of the week
Whole aircraft
one price whether two of you travel or eight

Empty legs across London right now

This board covers every London field at once, which is the right way to look at the city. If you are flexible about which airport you use, you are looking at several times more options than someone who insists on one.

Prices are for the whole aircraft and are shown in pounds. Some are indicative figures worked out from the distance and the class of jet; the firm price is confirmed with the operator when you send a request.

Guide prices for the whole aircraft, in pounds, on the corridors that produce repositioning sectors most often. These are not live offers and carry no dates: what is available right now is in the schedule on this page. The charter column is the same aircraft booked on your own dates.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.

Set up an alert for London

Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up at London.

Please fill in both the departure and the arrival city.

Nothing is stored on this site. The button opens a chat with the message already written, and you send it yourself. We reply during office hours, 07:00 to 23:00, and check messages outside them too.

Why London produces so many sectors

Three things compound here, and together they explain why this city is one of the best places in Europe to look for a repositioning flight.

Volume, and then more volume
More private movements than any comparable city in Europe, spread across six fields. Somewhere between a third and forty per cent of business jet flights carry no passengers, and applied to London's traffic that is a very large number of flights.
One way traffic in both directions
London is a destination and an origin in equal measure. Clients fly in one way and out one way, and each of those journeys strands an aircraft at one end. Cities that are mainly destinations produce sectors in one direction only.
Two seasons pulling opposite ways
The Alps drain aircraft south in winter and the Mediterranean does the same in summer, so for most of the year one direction is full and the other is empty. Knowing which is which is most of the skill.

Which airport, and why it matters in London

Six fields serve London for business aviation and they are genuinely different animals: different hours, different runways, different aircraft, different halves of the city. Each airport has its own card with a link to a full page on slots, charges, terminals and transfer times.

The six London business aviation airports

They are not interchangeable. What decides the right one is usually the time from wheels down to your front door, not the length of the runway or the name on the terminal. On an empty leg the airport comes with the sector, so this is most useful when you are choosing a charter or deciding which routes to watch.

Farnborough
FAB / EGLF
Hours Closed overnight
Runway 2,440 m
Into London 45 to 75 min

Business aviation only and the best terminal in Europe. PPR required. The default for west and south west London, Surrey and Hampshire.

London Luton
LTN / EGGW
Hours 24h airport, night limits
Runway 2,162 m
Into London 45 to 60 min

The widest choice of sectors and two competing FBOs, with no PPR. The airport runs around the clock, but business aviation night movements are restricted and in recent summers have been withdrawn between June and September.

London Biggin Hill
BQH / EGKB
Hours Closed overnight
Runway About 1,800 m
Into London 40 to 70 min to the City

South east London, Kent and Canary Wharf. Helicopter shuttle to Battersea in minutes, and a point of entry for pets on private aircraft.

London Stansted
STN / EGSS
Hours 24h airport, night limits
Runway 3,049 m
Into London 60 to 75 min

The longest runway of the London fields, ramp space when Luton is full, and the home of VIP airliners. Open around the clock, but business aviation night slots are capped and are being reduced.

RAF Northolt
NHT / EGWU
Hours Long day, not 24 hours
Runway 1,684 m
Into London 35 to 50 min to Park Lane

The shortest drive to Mayfair of any London field. Civil movements are capped and booked well in advance, so availability decides rather than price.

London City
LCY / EGLC
Hours Closes in the evening
Runway 1,508 m, steep approach
Into London 15 to 25 min to Canary Wharf

The only private jet centre inside London. Restricted to certified types flown by specifically approved crews.

Drive times are typical off peak figures and move considerably in the Friday evening peak. Where the road is the problem, a helicopter transfer from Biggin Hill, Luton or Stansted reaches central London in well under half an hour. No London field offers unrestricted business aviation access through the night, so a departure after 23:00 needs planning rather than assuming.

In short, Luton has one of the deepest pools of sectors and a wide choice of operators. Farnborough is built only for business aviation and is the easiest drive from the west. Biggin Hill needs no runway slot and is six minutes from Battersea by helicopter. Stansted takes the largest aircraft and has room to park them. Northolt has the most direct run into Mayfair along the A40 but is hardest to book. London City sits in the Docklands, closest to Canary Wharf and the City, and is hardest to qualify for.

The wider ring

Five more airports serve London beyond the six business aviation fields, and they are worth knowing because a sector into one of them can be better value than waiting for the airport you had in mind.

London Oxford. A business aviation field in its own right, open until 22:30 with extensions by arrangement, and the practical answer for Oxford, the Cotswolds and the north west of the capital.
Lydd. On the Kent coast, with no scheduled services, so it handles charter and private flights. Around two hours from central London by road, so it suits Kent and East Sussex rather than the city, and it is markedly quieter than any of the London fields.
Southend. East of the city with short queues, occasionally useful when Stansted is slot bound and an aircraft needs somewhere else to go.
Heathrow and Gatwick. Both handle private flights and both cost considerably more in charges. They make sense when someone in the party is connecting onto a scheduled long haul flight, and rarely otherwise.

From the aircraft to central London

The airport that wins is the one that reaches your address fastest, and in London that is decided by traffic rather than distance. Two heliports serve the city, and between them they change the arithmetic completely.

Booking an empty leg flight online

The London Heliport at Battersea sits on the south bank opposite Chelsea Harbour and is one of the city's two commercial heliports. From there Mayfair, Knightsbridge, Chelsea and the West End are minutes away by car. Skyports London Heliport sits to the east in Canary Wharf, five minutes by car from the towers and about twenty from the City.

From By road to the centre By helicopter to Battersea Typical helicopter cost
Biggin Hill 40 to 70 min About 6 min The lowest of the group
London City 25 to 45 min Not used for helicopter transfers The road is quickest from here
Farnborough 45 to 75 min About 15 min From around 3,000 GBP
Luton 50 to 80 min About 20 min Comparable to Farnborough
Stansted 60 to 90 min About 25 min Comparable to Farnborough
Northolt 35 to 50 min No helicopter shuttle The road is the answer here
London Oxford 75 to 100 min About 25 min From around 3,750 GBP

Two rules of thumb. The helicopter earns its money in the evening peak between four and seven and in the morning rush into town, and much less in the middle of the day. And on any arrival into the wrong side of the city, an extra fifteen minutes in the air removes an hour on the ground, a trade most people make every time once they have tried it.

Popular destinations from London, and which way they run empty

Not every route produces repositioning flights at the same rate. These are the ones that do. Prices are the typical starting point for the whole aircraft on an empty leg.

Destination Flight time Empty leg from Peak Which direction runs empty
Paris 1h 05m 2,600 GBP All year, weekdays Both directions, roughly evenly. One of Europe's busiest short business aviation corridors
Amsterdam 1h 05m 2,200 GBP All year, weekdays Both. Corporate day returns, usually released back to London late in the afternoon
Edinburgh 1h 10m 3,100 GBP All year Both. One of the busiest domestic corridors in the country
Dublin 1h 15m 1,900 GBP All year Both. No approved route needed for a dog flying back into Great Britain
Geneva 1h 35m 5,300 GBP December to March Back to London. The bargain is the flight home from the Alps
Zurich 1h 35m 5,000 GBP All year Both. Banking traffic keeps it alive outside the ski season
Milan 1h 50m 4,400 GBP All year Both, with clear spikes around the design and fashion weeks
Nice 1h 55m 6,100 GBP May to September Back to London in summer, outbound in the shoulder weeks
Ibiza 2h 20m 7,500 GBP June to September Back to London. Friday out and Sunday back are the expensive halves
Palma de Mallorca 2h 20m 7,400 GBP June to September Back to London, with the best value in June and September
Olbia 2h 20m 12,100 GBP July and August Back to London. Midweek sectors are where the value sits
Malaga 2h 45m 10,900 GBP April to October Both. A long season and a steady supply of returns
Mykonos 3h 40m 13,100 GBP June to September Back to London, and rarely more than a handful of times a season
Dubai 6h 50m 39,600 GBP November to March Both. Heavy aircraft work this route all winter
Abu Dhabi 7h 00m 40,600 GBP November to March Both. Gulf shuttles leave one leg empty more often than not
New York 7h 50m 34,100 GBP All year Both. Low frequency, but a single sector takes tens of thousands off a transatlantic charter
Miami 9h 10m 54,600 GBP December to April Mostly back to London. The longest sector we place with any regularity

The European corridors carry the volume, and that is where most people will find something. The long sectors to the Gulf and across the Atlantic appear far less often, but when one does the saving is measured in tens of thousands of pounds, which is why they are worth registering an interest in rather than watching for.

A word of warning about how these are advertised. A sector marketed as London to the Côte d'Azur might mean Luton to Cannes rather than Farnborough to Nice. That is fine if a thirty minute drive at the far end does not matter and irritating if it does.

We name both airports before you commit, always. If either end is wrong for you, say so and we will keep looking rather than hope you will not notice on the day.

The London season, and what it does to availability

Few cities in Europe have a calendar that moves private aviation the way London's does. These are the weeks when the usual advice stops working and planning ahead replaces waiting for a bargain.

Chelsea Flower Show, late May. A short, intense week that fills the western fields. Farnborough and Northolt feel it most.
Royal Ascot, mid June. One of the heaviest weeks of the year at Farnborough, with slots taken months ahead and helicopter movements at their peak.
Wimbledon, late June into July. A fortnight rather than a day, with the second week the pressure point. Slots for the quarter finals onwards want booking four to six weeks out.
Fashion weeks, late February into March and late September into October. Milan and Paris traffic rises sharply in both directions and the short European corridors tighten for about ten days each time.
Frieze London, October. The art world arrives for a week and departs again, which produces an unusual number of one way arrivals and therefore of outbound sectors afterwards.
Six Nations weekends, February and March. Not a London event but a London movement, with Edinburgh, Dublin, Cardiff and Paris all pulling aircraft out and back inside forty eight hours.

The useful inversion is this. An event that brings people into London on one way flights leaves aircraft here that must depart empty, so the days immediately after a major week are often the best of the month for an outbound sector. The days before it are the worst.

Arriving in London from abroad

Private flights clear at the private terminal rather than in an airline hall, but the formalities are real and most of them happen before you travel.

  • Passenger information goes in early. Full names, dates of birth, nationality and passport details for everyone on board. The operator files a General Aviation Report for international flights in and out of the United Kingdom, and it cannot be done at the last minute.
  • Electronic travel authorisation. Visitors from countries that do not need a visa now require an ETA before travelling to the UK. It is quick to obtain and easy to forget, and it applies on a private flight exactly as it does on a scheduled one.
  • Border control happens at the FBO. Officers attend the private terminal for the flight. At a quiet field the whole process takes a couple of minutes.
  • Air Passenger Duty applies to departures. Charged per passenger leaving a UK airport, and shown as its own line in any quote we send rather than folded into the total.

Empty leg calendar for London, month by month

The calendar blends what all six fields are doing, which is how the market actually behaves.

Demand
How hard the city is pulling on aircraft, which decides what a charter costs.
Empty legs
How many repositioning sectors reach the market, and how deep the discounts run.

January
SteadyGood
The Alps run hard and the Gulf corridors peak. Aircraft go out full and return empty, so the flight home from Geneva or Zurich is where the value is.
February
BusyGood
Half term, peak ski and the first Six Nations weekends. Friday outbounds carry a premium and midweek returns are among the cheapest sectors of the winter.
March
BusyStrong
The financial year ends for many companies while the ski season unwinds. Corporate demand and heavy repositioning at the same time, which is a good combination for anyone watching.
April
SteadyStrong
The spring shoulder, with the Alps finished and the high Mediterranean season not yet started. Discounts run deep in both directions and capacity is easy everywhere.
May
BusyFair
Cannes and Chelsea in the same few weeks, with Monaco following in early June. Southbound is expensive and scarce, northbound is unusually cheap.
June
Very busyFair
The London season at full stretch, with Ascot and the start of Wimbledon. The hardest month of the year to book late, and the best month to fly out the day after a big event.
July
Very busyFair
Peak Mediterranean demand and peak parking pressure. Aircraft that cannot park in London reposition out at short notice, and those forced movements are where the value hides.
August
BusyFair
Corporate London empties while the islands fill. Both directions sell on the leisure corridors, so midweek departures are where value survives.
September
Very busyStrong
The best month of the year in London. Corporate travel returns at full strength while the summer fleets move north, so demand and supply peak together.
October
BusyStrong
Frieze brings a week of one way arrivals and the autumn repositioning continues. A good month to be watching a route.
November
QuietFair
The lowest demand of the year, and the cheapest sectors, although there are fewer of them. More sectors appear from mid month as aircraft move towards the Alps.
December
BusyFair
Two months in one. The first fortnight is quiet and cheap, and from about the twentieth the Alps and the holidays make it the most expensive stretch of the year.

September, October, April and March are the months to aim for. The underlying rule holds all year: buy the direction nobody else wants, which in summer is the flight home and in winter is the flight out of the Alps.

Three situations, three answers

A first private flight, dates flexible
Tell us the fortnight rather than the day, accept any London field, and let us watch the corridor. This is the combination that produces the prices people find hard to believe.
A meeting abroad that cannot move
Book a charter and choose the airport by your address rather than by price. An empty leg that is withdrawn the night before costs far more than the saving was worth.
A group of eight to the Mediterranean
The best case for the whole product. The aircraft costs the same whoever is on board, so eight people on a Nice sector at 6,100 GBP is about 760 each, not far from a flexible business class fare on the same route.

Travelling with a dog or a cat

London works well for flying with an animal in both directions, as long as the right field is chosen. Four of the six business aviation fields are on the approved list for animals entering the country on a private flight: Luton, Farnborough, Biggin Hill and Stansted, with London Oxford on it too. Northolt and London City are not, so an animal arriving from abroad cannot land at either; within the UK or from Ireland no approved route is needed.

dog in the cabin of a private jet

Beyond the airport, the operator has to hold the relevant approval for the route, which is checked per booking rather than assumed. When you leave the country, the rules of your destination apply. Tell us about the animal in the first message and we will steer you to the right field rather than the closest one.

Questions about flying private in London

Which London airport is best?
The one nearest to where you are actually going. Farnborough for the west and Surrey, Biggin Hill for the City and Kent, London City for Canary Wharf, Northolt for Mayfair, Luton and Stansted for choice and for larger aircraft. On an empty leg the airport comes with the sector.
Can I fly out of London at midnight?
Not easily, and this surprises people. Farnborough, Biggin Hill and London City close in the evening, Northolt closes at eight on weekdays and earlier at weekends, and Luton and Stansted restrict business aviation at night even though the airports run around the clock. Plan a late departure in advance rather than assuming it will be possible.
How far ahead should I look?
Most sectors surface one to two weeks out and the deepest discounts appear inside the last 72 hours, when choice is thinnest. In the season weeks, from Chelsea through to the end of Wimbledon, treat that advice as reversed and book a charter early.
Is a helicopter transfer worth it?
Between four and seven in the evening and in the morning rush, almost always. Outside those hours it is more a comfort than a time saving. Battersea serves the west and centre, and the Skyports heliport suits Canary Wharf and the City.
Do I have to accept whichever airport the sector uses?
On an empty leg, yes, because the aircraft is going where the operator needs it. Being open to any London field is the single most effective thing you can do to increase your options, and usually costs half an hour in a car.
What does a London sector typically cost?
From around 1,900 GBP to Dublin and 2,600 GBP to Paris, up to more than 50,000 GBP across the Atlantic, for the whole aircraft. The charter price of the same route is always quoted alongside.
