Empty leg flights to and from Berlin

Berlin has one main airport for private jets, and it is a new one. Berlin Brandenburg, known by its code BER, opened in October 2020 on the site of the old Schönefeld airfield, about 18 kilometres south east of the city centre, and within days Tegel had closed for good. Almost every business jet flying between Britain and the German capital now uses BER, where private passengers are handled in a General Aviation Terminal of their own rather than in the main building.

The city fills that terminal with a particular kind of traffic. Politics, company headquarters, a busy calendar of trade fairs and a startup scene keep aircraft moving between Berlin and London through the working week, and the airport's night rules decide when those aircraft can arrive and leave. We plan every Berlin flight around those rules, with the slots, the handler and the car booked together.

Berlin sectors released right now

The board shows every sector we hold that lands at or leaves Berlin Brandenburg. If it runs short, sectors into Leipzig and Schönhagen follow beneath it, since both can serve a Berlin trip on the right day. Under the board sits the charter list, which prices the same cabins for a flight between Britain and Berlin on dates you choose, and that is the figure an empty leg has to beat before it saves you anything.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.

Set up an alert for Berlin

Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up between the UK and Berlin.

Please fill in both the departure and the arrival city.

Nothing is stored on this site. The button opens a chat with the message already written, and you send it yourself. We reply during office hours, 07:00 to 23:00, and check messages outside them too.

What keeps aircraft moving between Berlin and Britain

Berlin is not a holiday destination in the way that Nice or Ibiza is. Most private flights into the city are working trips, and the empty sectors follow the rhythm of the working week.

Government and diplomacy
The Bundestag, the Chancellery, the ministries and more than 150 embassies make Berlin the place where Germany is lobbied and negotiated with. Delegations, advisers and executives fly in for a day of meetings, and the aircraft that brought them in the morning often goes home empty to wait for the next job.
Headquarters and startups
Berlin is home to many company headquarters, much of German media and one of Europe's largest startup communities, with investors flying in from London for board meetings and funding rounds. Tesla's factory at Grünheide, half an hour east of the airport, adds its own traffic.
The trade fair calendar
Messe Berlin runs some of the largest fairs in the world, from Grüne Woche in January through ITB in March to IFA in September. The exhibitors and buyers come in on the opening days and go home at the close, so the jets that carried them spend the days between flying home empty or waiting for the return.
Aircraft based at BER
Several operators keep aircraft at Berlin Brandenburg, among them Private Wings and WindroseAir. When they send an aircraft to London to collect a client, or bring one home after a drop, the flight in the other direction is often offered as an empty leg.
Short trips that split in two
A typical Berlin trip lasts one to three days, often too long for the aircraft to sit idle and too short for it to take another job far away. Operators send it home and bring it back, and both of those positioning flights can carry passengers at an empty leg price.

Supply is steadiest from Monday to Thursday and thins out on Fridays and Saturdays, the opposite of the Riviera. Grüne Woche, IFA and the start of the working year produce the strongest runs of sectors, and August is the quietest month.

Berlin Brandenburg Airport in detail

BER took fourteen years to build and opened nine years late, on 31 October 2020. It combines the southern runway, built new for the airport, with the rebuilt northern runway of the old Schönefeld airport, and it replaced both Schönefeld and Tegel, the city's main airport for decades.

Codes BER (IATA) and EDDB (ICAO)
Location Schönefeld, in the state of Brandenburg, about 18 kilometres south east of the city centre, just outside the Berlin city boundary
Opened 31 October 2020. Tegel closed on 8 November 2020, and the old Schönefeld terminal, later Terminal 5, closed for good in 2022
Elevation About 48 metres, or 157 feet
Runways Two parallel runways 1,900 metres apart, 06L/24R of 3,600 metres on the north side and 06R/24L of 4,000 metres on the south side, both long enough for any business jet. Until 3 October 2024 they were numbered 07 and 25, and older guides still use those numbers
Run by Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH, owned by the states of Berlin and Brandenburg and the German federal government
Traffic About 26 million passengers in 2025; the Phenom 300 and the Citation XLS were the business jets seen most often
Business aviation The General Aviation Terminal at Georg Wulf Straße 3, in the Service Area North beside the approach road to Terminal 1, run for the airport by BAS Berlin Aviation Service, with ExecuJet running its FBO in the same building
Night rules No landings or take offs may be planned between 23:30 and 05:30. A late arrival may land until midnight and an early one from 05:00, but departures to Europe get no such allowance, and nothing moves between midnight and 05:00
Slots BER is a fully coordinated airport, and business aviation flights need a slot from the German slot coordinator, Fluko, for both landing and departure
Border and customs Federal police and customs officers clear flights from outside Schengen, including every flight from the UK, in the General Aviation Terminal
Fuel Jet A1 from Air BP and TotalEnergies
Government terminal A separate terminal on the north side, opened in October 2020, handles state visits and the aircraft of the German government, and it is not used by private flights

The terminal for private flights is a separate building with its own apron, away from the crowds of Terminal 1 and reached by its own road, so the car stops a few steps from the door. It is the only place at BER where a private passenger is handled, and the handlers there take care of everything from the car to the aircraft steps.

The night rules at BER

The rules come from the airport's operating licence, confirmed by the Federal Administrative Court in 2011, and they are among the strictest at any large airport in Europe. No other rule at BER shapes a flight from Britain as much.

The core night
Nothing moves from midnight to 05:00
Between midnight and 05:00 local time no aircraft may land or take off, and there is no exception for business aviation, however much the passengers are prepared to pay. Only emergencies, medical flights, missions of the state and a few specially permitted flights are allowed.
The shoulders
No planned movements from 23:30 to 05:30
No landing or take off may be planned between 23:30 and 05:30. A flight due to land before 23:30 that is running late may still land until midnight, and a morning arrival planned for after 05:30 may land from 05:00. For departures to Britain and the rest of Europe there is no such allowance, so a jet that misses 23:30 stays on the ground until morning.
Louder aircraft
Earlier limits for noisy types
Aircraft that fail the noise standards face tighter limits, from 22:00 to 06:00. Modern business jets meet the standards comfortably, but the rule catches some older types, and the operator confirms it when it quotes.
Exceptions
Decided by the aviation authority
The joint aviation authority of Berlin and Brandenburg, known as LuBB, can grant an exception only where a public interest outweighs the protection of the neighbours. A missed business meeting or a late dinner does not qualify.
What it means from London
Leave London by about 20:45
Berlin is one hour ahead of Britain, and the flight takes about 1h 45m. To land before 23:30 in Berlin, a jet has to leave London by about 20:45 British time, and we plan for earlier than that, because a queue at the runway or a headwind can cost the margin.
What it means for the return
The first departure is 05:30
An early start from Berlin can leave at 05:30 local time and reach Luton or Stansted at about 06:20 British time, after the British night period has ended, which makes BER useful for a morning meeting in the City. The handler needs the passengers at the terminal about 30 to 40 minutes before, so the car leaves central Berlin soon after four.

The General Aviation Terminal, seen by a passenger

At BER a private flight never touches Terminal 1. Every step takes place in the General Aviation Terminal, where a flight from Britain is cleared and its passengers are on their way into the city within minutes of the engines stopping.

Finding it
The terminal stands in the Service Area North, on the right of the approach road to Terminal 1, at Georg Wulf Straße 3 in Schönefeld. Chauffeurs know it as the GAT. There are parking spaces outside and a set down point at the door, so the car never has to go near the busy forecourt of Terminal 1.
Rebuilt in 2023
The building was stripped out and redesigned while it stayed in use, and the new terminal was finished ahead of schedule and officially opened on 28 September 2023. The work was carried out for New GAT Berlin, a joint company formed by the Luxaviation group, owner of ExecuJet, and the Berlin firm Air Service Berlin CFH, and it gave the terminal a new customs and security area and quieter rooms for passengers who value their privacy.
Who looks after you
BAS Berlin Aviation Service handles private flights at the GAT on behalf of the airport, and ExecuJet runs its own FBO in the same building with a small dedicated team. The terminal is normally staffed from 06:00 to 22:00, and ExecuJet can open it at any hour on request, which covers the first departures at 05:30 and late arrivals until midnight. Your operator chooses the handler, and we tell you which one it is when we confirm the flight.
Lounges and work rooms
ExecuJet's side of the building has a VIP lounge with a bar and quiet corners, a conference room with light refreshments, and work areas with height adjustable desks, and there is wireless internet, printing and charging throughout. BAS looks after its passengers in its own part of the building. None of the rooms is large, because nobody is expected to wait long.
Eating before or after the flight
There is no restaurant in the GAT itself. The lounges offer drinks, coffee and light refreshments, and a full meal is better ordered as catering for the flight. If you have time to spare, the Steigenberger Airport Hotel beside Terminal 1 has a restaurant and bar a short drive from the GAT.
A meeting at the airport
Some visitors never go into Berlin at all. ExecuJet's conference room suits a small meeting between flights, and for a larger one the Steigenberger Airport Hotel has around a dozen meeting rooms, the largest for up to 300 people. A morning arrival and an afternoon departure then fit comfortably inside the night rules.
Arriving from Britain
The jet parks on the apron in front of the terminal. The handler meets you at the steps and walks or drives you to the building, where federal police officers check passports and customs officers take any declarations. If this is your first crossing into Schengen since the Entry/Exit System began, the officers also take your fingerprints and photograph, which adds a few minutes.
Your bags on arrival
The handler unloads the hold while you go through passport control and brings the bags through the terminal to your car, which can often be loaded at the door. Nobody collects cases from a belt, and nothing leaves your party's sight for long.
Handing over bags for the flight home
There is no check in desk and no queue. The driver pulls up at the door, the handler takes the bags from the car, and they are screened in the terminal before they go into the hold. Golf bags, skis and large cases are welcome, since the only limits are the size of the hold and the weight the aircraft can carry. Tell us about anything bulky when you book, because a light jet has much less room than a midsize one.
Leaving Berlin
Arrive about 30 minutes before the planned departure on a flight to Britain, a little more on the first departure of the day, at 05:30. Your passports are checked for the exit record and you pass through the terminal's own security screening, and then the handler takes you to the aircraft on foot or by car.
The crew side
Pilots have their own lounge with showers and a briefing room, and the handler arranges fuel, catering, parking and the slots. None of it needs any action from the passengers, but it is part of why the terminal runs quickly.
Catering and extras
Specialist aviation caterers at BER deliver to the aircraft around the clock, often at short notice, and they can collect dishes from well known Berlin restaurants or supply flowers. Tell us about dietary needs and any special occasion when you book, and we pass them on with the flight details.
Part of the party on an airline
If one or two people are joining you on a scheduled flight, the airport sells its Zeitgeist VIP Service. It covers check in and bags, separate security and passport checks, a lounge in Terminal 1, reached through the premium car park P1, with showers and private suites for up to four people, and a car to the aircraft. It has to be booked online at least 48 hours ahead, and it currently costs about 490 euros net for the main guest and 290 euros for each companion.

What we arrange for a Berlin trip

  • The slot comes first. A private flight into BER needs a slot for the landing and another for the departure, and in the morning and evening peaks they can be scarce. We ask for both when the aircraft is held, not when the contract is signed.
  • We plan backwards from 23:30. Every evening arrival is timed to land with room to spare before the night rules begin, and if the schedule is tight we move the departure earlier rather than hope.
  • We decide early where the aircraft waits. On a stay of several days the jet may park at BER, fly home or position elsewhere, and each choice changes the price. We compare them before quoting.
  • The car is booked with the flight. A chauffeur meets the aircraft at the GAT, and for a group we add a van for the luggage. The driver has the flight number and follows any change in the landing time.
  • We watch the fair calendar. In the week of ITB, IFA or Grüne Woche, hotels, cars and slots all run short, so we book them together and early.
  • We keep a plan for bad weather. Fog and snow close BER only rarely, but in winter clearing ice from the wings can cost half an hour, and we build that into the timing of early departures.

The rules that decide a Berlin schedule

Four sets of rules shape every private trip to Berlin. None is difficult, but each has to be settled before the aircraft is booked.

Night rules and the last landing
The window from 23:30 to 05:30 decides the latest time you can arrive and the earliest you can leave. It suits a day trip, with a morning arrival and an evening return, and it rules out a flight home after a late dinner.
Slots at a coordinated airport
Every private landing and take off at BER must have its own slot, issued by Fluko, the German slot coordinator. We ask for it, the handler or the operator files the request, and it usually comes back quickly, but a flight that runs far outside its slot can be refused, so we keep the times realistic.
Border control for flights from Britain
Germany is in Schengen and Britain is not, so every flight from the UK is cleared by federal police in the GAT. The Entry/Exit System registers British visitors on their first crossing, and the passport rules below apply in full.
The German passenger tax
Germany charges an air passenger tax on each passenger leaving a German airport on a commercial flight, including a charter. For a flight to Britain it is 13.03 euros a passenger from July 2026, and children under two without a seat of their own are exempt. It applies to an empty leg sold to passengers just as to a full charter.

What Berlin adds to the bill

Compared with the Riviera or the Alps, Berlin is inexpensive on the ground. The flight is almost all of the price, and the extras are small.

13.03 euros a head
the German air passenger tax on each passenger leaving BER for Britain, after the cut from 15.53 euros that took effect on 1 July 2026
Band A
for British duty, since Berlin is well under 2,000 miles from London, charged on any jet of 5.7 tonnes or more
Handling and parking
charged by the handler for each turnaround and by the day for an aircraft that stays, usually included in the quote as separate lines
7.5 per cent
the Berlin city tax on the price of a hotel room, charged on business and leisure stays alike

The German tax is modest next to its French equivalent. A party of six flying home from Berlin to London pays 78.18 euros in all, and nothing is due on the flight into Germany. The operator collects it and shows it on the invoice.

British duty is due on the outbound flight from the UK. Until the end of March 2027 a Berlin passenger pays 32 GBP on a jet weighing 5.7 to 20 tonnes and 142 GBP on anything larger. After that the distinction by weight goes, and every jet of 5.7 tonnes or more is charged the higher Band A figure of 146.63 GBP per head. A jet lighter than 5.7 tonnes, such as a Citation Mustang or a Phenom 100, pays no duty at all, and neither does a flight that starts in Jersey or Guernsey.

Hotels add the city tax to the bill at 7.5 per cent of the net room price. A room of 600 euros a night at one of the grand hotels on Pariser Platz or the Gendarmenmarkt therefore carries 45 euros of tax a night.

Schönhagen, Leipzig and the other airfields around Berlin

For almost every trip BER is the right answer. A few other airfields matter on particular days, and three famous names no longer do.

Berlin Brandenburg, EDDB. Two long runways, a terminal of its own for private flights, border police and customs on site, and a drive of 35 to 60 minutes into the city. Its limits are the night rules and the slots, and otherwise it is the obvious choice.
Schönhagen, EDAZ. A busy general aviation airfield about 45 kilometres south west of the city, near Trebbin and within easy reach of Potsdam. The asphalt runway is 1,510 metres long and takes aircraft of up to 14 tonnes, which covers light and many midsize jets. It is open from 08:30 to 20:00 and can open earlier, later or even overnight if asked at least 24 hours ahead. A flight from Britain needs 48 hours' notice to the border police. For a light jet it can be the answer to a late arrival that BER cannot take.
Leipzig/Halle, EDDP. A large airport about 150 kilometres south west of Berlin, best known for its cargo hub, which works through the night. That night permission does not extend to business jets flying as air taxis, which may not use the hours from 22:00 to 06:00, so Leipzig is no way round the night rules at BER. It is two hours from Berlin by road and matters mainly as a place for an aircraft to wait, or for a daytime arrival when a sector happens to land there.
Strausberg, EDAY. A small airfield some 35 kilometres east of the centre, in use since 1927. Its concrete runway is 1,200 metres long and takes up to 14 tonnes. It suits turboprops and the smallest jets, and it has had instrument approaches since 2021, but for most business jets the runway is too short.
Neuhardenberg, EDON. A former military airfield about 55 kilometres east of Berlin, developed by its owners for business aviation, with a runway of 2,400 metres. It is quiet and close to the Oder valley, but opening hours and border clearance have to be arranged in advance.
Tegel, Tempelhof and Schönefeld. Tempelhof closed in 2008 and Tegel in November 2020, and the old Schönefeld terminal has closed, its runway now part of BER. None of them can take a private flight today.

From BER to Mitte, the West End and Potsdam

The car from the GAT joins the A113 motorway almost at once and reaches the city ring, the A100, within about 15 minutes. The times below are by car in ordinary traffic, and the weekday peaks, from about 07:30 to 09:30 and 16:30 to 18:30, can add half as much again.

Destination By car from the GAT Notes
Brandenburg Gate, Pariser Platz and the Hotel Adlon About 35 to 45 minutes The government quarter, the Reichstag and the embassies on Unter den Linden are all within a few minutes of each other
Potsdamer Platz and the Ritz-Carlton About 35 to 40 minutes Offices, the Sony Center and the Kulturforum, a short walk from the Tiergarten
Gendarmenmarkt and Bebelplatz About 35 to 45 minutes The Hotel de Rome, the Konzerthaus and the French and German churches, close to Friedrichstraße and the State Opera
Kurfürstendamm and the Waldorf Astoria About 40 to 50 minutes The West End, with its department stores, boutiques and the Zoo
Messe Berlin and the CityCube About 40 to 50 minutes The trade fair grounds at the Funkturm, where Grüne Woche, ITB and IFA are held
Uber Arena and the East Side Gallery About 25 to 30 minutes The concert arena in Friedrichshain, one of the nearest large venues to the airport
Olympiastadion About 45 to 55 minutes The home of Hertha and the German cup final, at the western edge of the city
Potsdam About 45 to 55 minutes Sanssouci and the lakeside villas, reached by the A10 Berliner Ring to the south west, and closer still from Schönhagen
Tesla Gigafactory, Grünheide About 30 minutes East of the airport on the A10, with no need to enter the city

Two restrictions are worth knowing. Helicopters are almost never a practical way into Berlin, because the airspace over the government quarter is restricted and the city has few places to land, so the last part of the journey is by car. And on the days of the marathon in September, the half marathon in spring, big demonstrations and state visits, whole districts close to traffic, and the driver plans the route around them.

For anyone who prefers the train, the Airport Express has run to Berlin Hauptbahnhof in 23 minutes since the new Dresden line opened in December 2025, with up to four trains an hour from the station under Terminal 1. It is fast and cheap, but after a private flight few passengers use it, since the car is waiting at the terminal door.

Popular routes between the UK and Berlin, and which way they run empty

The figures in the table buy the entire aircraft rather than a single seat, at whatever its operator will accept for a flight that is happening in any case. The times run from wheels up to wheels down and do not include the drive into the city. Because the list mixes a Citation CJ3 with a Challenger 350 and several types between, a longer route can come out cheaper than a shorter one. Where the date is fixed and the discount is secondary, look at the charter list further up, which gives the full price of the same aircraft.

Berlin to Birmingham 1h 50m 4,400 GBP Autumn to spring Home after an industry fair at the Messe
Leeds to Berlin 1h 50m 4,000 GBP All year Out for a Friday return
Berlin to Newcastle 1h 50m 4,400 GBP Spring and autumn North again after dropping a party for a concert or a match

Passports, customs and money in Germany

Every formality on a private trip to Berlin takes place in the General Aviation Terminal, with federal police for the passports and customs officers for the bags.

  • Your passport. Germany looks at two dates: the passport must be less than ten years old when you land, and it must still have three months to run after your planned exit from Schengen. Check both dates before you fly, because a passport can pass one test and fail the other.
  • The 90 day rule. A British visitor may spend up to 90 days in any 180 in Schengen without a visa, and days in Germany are added to days anywhere else in the area.
  • The Entry/Exit System. It has been running at every Schengen border crossing since 10 April 2026. British travellers give fingerprints and a photograph on their first crossing, children under 12 give a photograph only, and the record then lasts three years.
  • ETIAS. The EU travel authorisation has been announced but has still not started, and no date has been set. It is expected to cost 20 euros and to last three years.
  • Customs allowances. German customs lets each adult arriving from the UK carry duty free up to 200 cigarettes, and either a litre of spirits or two litres of sparkling or fortified wine, plus four litres of ordinary wine, sixteen of beer and a further 430 euros in other purchases. Ham sandwiches, cheese and other meat or dairy food packed in Britain are confiscated at the border, and anyone holding 10,000 euros or more in cash has to tell the officers.
  • VAT refunds. Germany charges VAT at 19 per cent. A visitor who lives outside the EU can reclaim it on goods bought in Berlin, with the export forms stamped by customs at the GAT before departure, so tell the handler before the day you leave.
  • Going home. The UK limits on the way home are generous by comparison, with four litres of spirits, 18 of wine, 42 of beer and 200 cigarettes per adult, and 270 GBP of other goods for anyone arriving by private aircraft. Under the rules in force from 1 October 2026, cider is counted with beer and sparkling wine with still wine.
  • Money. Germany uses the euro. Cards are accepted in hotels, restaurants and shops, but some smaller cafés and bars still prefer cash.

Empty leg calendar for Berlin, month by month

Berlin's calendar is set by trade fairs, politics and culture rather than by the weather, and the busiest weeks are often in winter.

Empty legs
how many released sectors serving Berlin we typically see

January
BusyStrong
The working year restarts in the first week, and Grüne Woche, the largest food and farming fair in the world, fills the Messe from 15 to 24 January 2027. Aircraft come and go all month.
February
Very busyGood
Fruit Logistica runs from 3 to 5 February 2027, and the Berlinale follows from 10 to 21 February, opening a day earlier than usual. Hotels near Potsdamer Platz fill for the film market.
March
Very busyGood
ITB, the travel industry's largest fair, runs from 16 to 18 March 2027, and hotel rooms in the West End are scarce that week. Easter falls on 28 March.
April
SteadyGood
Spring conferences and the first warm weekends keep traffic steady, and Gallery Weekend brings collectors to the city at the end of the month.
May
BusyGood
The German cup final at the Olympiastadion at the end of the month fills the flights for a weekend, and the conference season is at its height.
June
BusyGood
The Pergamon Museum reopens on 4 June 2027 with the restored Pergamon Altar, and long evenings bring the city outside. Business travel stays strong until the summer holidays.
July
SteadyFair
As the Bundestag rises for the summer and the Berlin school holidays begin, business travel slows. Leisure visitors take its place.
August
QuietThin
The quietest month for business flights. Many Berliners are away, and the aircraft based at BER are busy flying them south.
September
Very busyStrong
IFA fills the Messe at the start of the month, parliament returns, and the marathon closes the city centre on a Sunday late in the month. It is one of the best months for sectors in both directions.
October
BusyGood
The month brings German Unity Day on 3 October, the Festival of Lights, held from 9 to 18 October in 2026, and a full calendar of conferences.
November
BusyGood
A busy month for meetings before the year ends. The Christmas markets open towards the end of the month.
December
BusyFair
Business flying winds down after the middle of the month, and New Year's Eve at the Brandenburg Gate draws crowds from all over Europe. Owners keep their aircraft for their own trips, so fewer sectors are released.

The best value is usually on the days just after a big fair, when aircraft that brought the exhibitors in fly home, and in the middle of the week in spring and autumn, when the business traffic is steady and the city is at its most pleasant.

Three situations, three answers

A day of meetings in the government quarter
Take off from London at around seven in the morning and you are on the ground at BER before ten, Berlin time, with Mitte reached by eleven. Hold the return for the early evening, well before the night rules begin, and the whole trip fits into one working day. An empty leg rarely matches both ends, but a sector in one direction can take a large share off the cost of the whole trip.
A team at a trade fair
For ITB, IFA or Grüne Woche, book the aircraft, the slot and the hotel together, as early as you can, because all three run short in fair weeks. On the days after a fair, many aircraft fly home empty, so a flexible return often finds a sector at a fraction of the charter price.
A weekend in the city
Arrive on Friday afternoon and leave on Sunday evening, when the slots are easier and the aircraft based in Berlin are often positioning to London for Monday. Tell us the hotel and the evening plans, and we set the return time to suit the night rules.

Flying to Berlin with a dog or a cat

For Germany a dog or cat has to be chipped first and vaccinated against rabies at least three weeks before the flight, and an official vet must sign its animal health certificate within the ten days before it lands. Owners who live in Britain lost the right to travel on an EU issued pet passport on 22 April 2026. A dog can travel in the cabin of most private jets, and the handler arranges the check on arrival at the GAT.

The flight home decides the choice of aircraft. Coming back, the animal must travel with an operator that Britain has approved for pets, and a German vet has to treat a dog for tapeworm no less than one and no more than five days before landing, a step cats are spared. Mention the animal when you first enquire, so that we offer only suitable aircraft.

Questions about private flights to Berlin

Which airport do private jets use for Berlin?
Berlin Brandenburg, BER, which replaced both Tegel and Schönefeld in 2020. Private passengers use the General Aviation Terminal on the north side of the airport, not the main terminal, and are driven to the city in 35 to 60 minutes.
How long do we spend in the air from the UK?
About 1h 45m to 1h 50m from the London airports, 1h 50m from Birmingham, 1h 55m from Manchester and around two hours from Edinburgh or Jersey. Berlin is one hour ahead of the UK, so a 09:00 departure from London lands at about 11:45 local time.
Can we land at BER late at night?
Only until 23:30 as a rule, and until midnight if a planned arrival is running late. From midnight to 05:00 nothing moves at all, and no private flight can buy an exception. Leipzig is no help, since business jets flying as air taxis may not use its night hours from 22:00 to 06:00, but Schönhagen can open at night for a light jet, given two days' notice for the border police.
Is Tegel still open for private jets?
No. Tegel closed in November 2020, and Tempelhof in 2008. All private flights to Berlin now land at BER or, less often, at a smaller airfield such as Schönhagen.
Do we need a slot?
Yes, two of them. Both the arrival time and the departure time have to be approved in advance, so we ask for them the moment we hold the aircraft, and the handler follows up if the timing changes.
How long does the passport check take?
A few minutes in the General Aviation Terminal, and a little longer on your first crossing under the Entry/Exit System, in place since April 2026, which records fingerprints and a photograph. On most arrivals the car is on its way within 15 minutes of the aircraft stopping.
What does an empty leg to Berlin cost?
The cheapest sector on our list is a Citation CJ3 from Biggin Hill at about 3,800 GBP for the whole aircraft, and a Phenom 300 from London starts at about 4,200 GBP. On a normal charter, the aircraft on our list run from about 9,100 GBP for the shortest light jet trip to about 21,200 GBP for a Challenger 300 out of Dublin.
Are there taxes on a private flight to Berlin?
Two on the flight itself. British duty applies to the flight out of the UK on jets of 5.7 tonnes or more, from 32 GBP a passenger, and Germany charges 13.03 euros a passenger on the flight home. Berlin hotels also add 7.5 per cent city tax to the room price.
Can we use a smaller airfield instead?
Schönhagen, south west of the city, takes light and many midsize jets up to 14 tonnes and suits a trip to Potsdam, with 48 hours' notice needed for the border police. For most trips BER is simpler, since border police and customs are on site every day and the terminal is built for private flights.
How do we get from the airport into the city?
By car from the terminal door, in 35 to 45 minutes to Mitte in normal traffic. The Airport Express reaches Berlin Hauptbahnhof in 23 minutes, but after a private flight a car booked in advance is usually the easier choice.
Can a dog fly with us to Berlin?
Yes, with a microchip, a rabies vaccination and an animal health certificate for Germany, and a tapeworm treatment for a dog on the way home. The return to Britain has to be flown by an approved operator, so tell us at the start.
When are the busiest weeks?
The trade fair weeks, above all Grüne Woche in January, ITB in March and IFA in September, along with the Berlinale in February and the marathon weekend in late September. Aircraft, slots and hotels all run short, so book early or pick the days after the event.
And if nothing is released for my dates?
Let us know roughly when you hope to fly, how many seats you need and whether a day earlier or later would still work. We watch BER, Leipzig and Schönhagen together, and aircraft based in Berlin often position to Britain at short notice.

Call +44 7857 574938 , message the same number on WhatsApp , or write to flight@empty-leg.co.uk . Say which hotel or office in Berlin you are heading for, when you would like to land and leave, how many people and cases are coming, and whether an animal is on board. Our answer sets matching sectors against their charter prices and shows how the slots, the night rules and the chauffeur at the GAT would work on your dates.
