Empty leg flights to and from Miami

Miami sits where North America meets the Caribbean and Latin America, and between December and April it becomes one of the busiest private aviation destinations in the United States. Jets from Britain land at Miami-Opa locka Executive, 11 miles north of downtown, or at Miami International, Miami Executive and the airports of Fort Lauderdale, and passengers can be on Miami Beach within an hour of clearing customs.

The crossing is a long one, about 9h 10m westbound in a Gulfstream G650, so the prices here are for ultra long range jets. Transatlantic empty legs to Miami are rarer than to New York and mostly follow the winter season: westbound when jets fly out empty to collect families after Christmas and Easter, and eastbound when jets that have dropped holidaymakers return home. In summer a few more run west from Scotland and Ireland after American golf trips. Far more sectors run inside America and the Caribbean, between Miami, New York, Palm Beach and the Bahamas, and one of them is often the cheapest way to add a second city or an island to the trip.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.

Set up an alert for Miami

Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up between the UK and Miami.

Please fill in both the departure and the arrival city.

Where Miami sectors come from

Three seasonal movements put aircraft into the air over Florida with empty cabins.

The European winter escape
From December to Easter, British and European travellers fly to Miami for Art Basel in the first week of December, for the winter sun and as the first stop of a Caribbean holiday. Few jets wait two or three weeks in Florida, so they drop their passengers, cross the Atlantic without them and come back to collect them, which puts transatlantic sectors on the board just before Christmas, in the first days of January and around Easter.
The snowbird migration
Every autumn owners from New York, Boston and Chicago move south for the winter, and every spring they go north again. From November aircraft arrive full and leave empty, and from April the pattern reverses, so the corridor between Miami and the northeast carries empty sectors almost every week of the season.
The island shuttle
Opa-locka is the jumping off point for Nassau, the Exumas, the Turks and Caicos and St Maarten, where guests for St Barts change to a small turboprop, since the island's short runway takes no jets. Aircraft fly guests out to the islands and often return to South Florida empty the same day or the next, which makes short Caribbean sectors some of the most frequent on the board.

For a traveller from Britain the smartest plan is often a combination: the Atlantic crossing to New York or Miami, then a domestic empty leg for the next part of the trip. Hurricane season adds sectors of its own, because when a storm threatens, operators move aircraft out of South Florida and bring them back once it has passed.

Seasonal demand for repositioning flights

Opa-locka Executive Airport in detail

Miami has three airports that matter to private flights, Opa-locka, Miami International and Miami Executive, and most jets from Britain choose Opa-locka. These are the facts that shape an arrival there.

Codes and name OPF (IATA), KOPF (ICAO). Miami-Dade County renamed it Miami-Opa locka Executive Airport in 2014, but most people still simply say Opa-locka.
Location About 11 miles, or 18 kilometres, north of downtown Miami, partly inside the city of Opa-locka, and roughly 10 minutes by road from Hard Rock Stadium, home of the Miami Grand Prix.
History Glenn Curtiss, the aviation pioneer who founded the city of Opa-locka, brought flying to the site in the 1920s, and the Goodyear blimp was based here from 1930. The Navy trained pilots here through the Second World War, the county took the field over in 1962, and in the 1960s it ranked among the busiest airports in the United States.
Runways Three runways: 9L/27R, 2,439 metres or 8,002 feet, and 12/30, 2,073 metres or 6,800 feet, both lit and equipped with instrument landing systems, plus a shorter 9R/27L of 1,313 metres, or 4,309 feet, for light aircraft.
Operator Miami-Dade County owns the airport, and its Aviation Department runs it together with Miami International, Miami Executive and two smaller airfields.
Tower and FBO hours The tower works from 7 am to 11 pm local time. Four of the five FBOs are open 24 hours and Jet Aviation from 6 am to midnight, but a flight from abroad has to fit the customs hours.
Customs US Customs and Border Protection runs a federal inspection station on the field every day from 9 am to midnight. Permission to land is requested before departure, and a flight arriving in the last hour before closing may be sent elsewhere, so the realistic limit is about 11 pm.
Size of aircraft The main runway takes every business jet, and Fontainebleau Aviation's largest hangar is built for aircraft up to a Boeing Business Jet.
Other residents Coast Guard Air Station Miami, described by the county as the busiest air and sea rescue station of the US Coast Guard, shares the field with police and fire rescue helicopters.
FBOs Five: Signature, Atlantic Aviation, Fontainebleau Aviation, Embassair and Jet Aviation, the newest, which began full operations in July 2026.
Airlines Almost none, so the ramps, the approach roads and the terminals belong to private aviation.
Noise The county lists Opa-locka as a noise sensitive airport and limits flight training to aircraft of up to 40,000 pounds, to protect its neighbours.
Getting away Chauffeured cars wait at the FBOs. Downtown and Brickell are 20 to 35 minutes away and South Beach 30 to 45, more when Interstate 95 is at its peak.

Opa-locka is our default for most of Miami. We move a quote to Miami International when the landing will be after 11 pm, because customs there never close, and to Fort Lauderdale or Palm Beach when the address lies further north or when Art Basel fills every ramp in the county.

Where private passengers are handled at Opa-locka

Five companies run private terminals at Opa-locka, each with its own lounge, ramp and entrance road. The operator books one of them, and that choice decides where the chauffeur waits and how the customs visit fits into the arrival.

Signature at Opa-locka
Signature's terminal on NW 42nd Avenue is open 24 hours and, unusually for a private terminal, has its own restaurant, as well as a private lounge, showers with complimentary toiletries, conference rooms and a snooze room. Cars can come to the aircraft, GO Rentals supplies self drive hire cars, pets are welcome, and customs and immigration are close at hand.
Atlantic Aviation Opa-locka
Atlantic's building on NW 44th Avenue works around the clock with a café, a conference room, showers and a canopy over part of the ramp, welcome in the summer rain. Its arrivals from abroad are cleared between 9 am and midnight at the customs station on the same avenue.
Fontainebleau Aviation
Fontainebleau Aviation began as the flight department of the group behind the Fontainebleau hotel on Miami Beach, became a full service FBO in 2011 and has been majority owned by Skyservice since 2023. Its present facility, opened in 2017, has one of the largest hangar complexes at the airport, executive suites, conference rooms, a shower room, car rental and a limousine service on site, and cars can drive up to the aircraft.
Embassair
Embassair opened at the turn of 2023 in a terminal designed by the French architect Jacques Rougerie, and since April 2026 it has been owned by JHSF, the Brazilian luxury group behind São Paulo Catarina executive airport. It offers four private boarding lounges with direct access to the ramp, a hospitality bar, a small duty free boutique, golf carts between the aircraft and the terminal, a covered garage with electric car charging and snooze suites for crews.
Jet Aviation Opa-locka
The newest FBO began initial operations in November 2025 and full operations in July 2026, with an 8,500 square foot terminal whose tall windows look straight onto the apron, guest and crew lounges, a conference room, 40,000 square feet of hangars, sustainable aviation fuel and a private entrance for cars.
The customs station
Aircraft from abroad usually park on the customs ramp, and passengers and bags go through the federal inspection station, a separate building on NW 44th Avenue. Jet Aviation lists customs officers on site at its new terminal, and Embassair's new owner plans the same, so we confirm which applies when we book.
Miami International after dark
Signature's FBO on the north side of Miami International sits beside the Miami General Aviation Center, where customs work 24 hours a day. It is the answer for a landing after 11 pm and the closest private terminal to Brickell and Coral Gables. The ramp at the General Aviation Center itself takes aircraft with a wingspan of up to 78 feet only, so for a G650 or another large jet we confirm with the FBO where the clearance will take place.
Catering and cars
Miami's aviation caterers deliver to every FBO at Opa-locka, and chauffeured cars and SUVs meet the aircraft by arrangement. In the peak weeks of December, February and early May both should be booked at least a day ahead.

For most trips the choice of FBO follows the plan on the ground: a family bound for Bal Harbour, a quick business turn or a crew that needs a hangar. We name it in the quote and pass it to the chauffeur and the caterer before the aircraft leaves Britain. Hangar and ramp space across South Florida is short all winter, so a jet staying more than a night or two may have to park at another airport, and space that is easy to find in July can be gone by January.

The terminal from a passenger's side

After nine hours in the air, the arrival at Opa-locka is refreshingly short.

ARRIVAL
Customs first, then the car
The aircraft taxis to the customs ramp, and passengers walk into the inspection station with their passports while the bags follow. After clearance the handler's staff drive you to the terminal or straight to the waiting car.
DOCUMENTS
ESTA, biometrics and a form
Officers compare every passport with its ESTA and with the passenger list sent before take off, and first time visitors may be fingerprinted and photographed. Each household completes a customs declaration, and it helps to have the address of your hotel or villa ready.
FOOD
Leave the fruit on board
Officers look closely for fruit, meat and plants, because pests carried on them threaten Florida's citrus groves and farms. Leave leftover catering on the aircraft and declare anything edible that you carry off it.
SECURITY
No queues and no liquids limit
Charter passengers on a G650, and on any jet up to a Global 6000 in size, pass no TSA checkpoint: the crew or the FBO checks passports against the passenger list, and liquids travel in the cabin without limits. Screening at the FBO applies only to the very heaviest jets of American operators.
LUGGAGE
Room for golf bags and paddles
A Gulfstream G650 carries about 5.5 cubic metres of luggage in a hold at the back of the cabin that stays reachable in flight. Golf clubs, fishing rods and paddle boards usually fit, but tell the operator what is coming so that the load is planned.
TIMING
Land by 11 pm at Opa-locka
Customs close at midnight and flights arriving in the final hour can be diverted. From London that means leaving by about 6.30 pm UK time, or 5.30 pm in the weeks when Miami is only four hours behind; later departures go to Miami International instead.
HEAT
Heat and humidity on the ramp
From June to September midday temperatures sit in the low thirties with high humidity. FBOs keep the cabin cool on the ground, and the canopies at Atlantic and Fontainebleau Aviation keep passengers dry between the car and the steps.
HURRICANES
June to November
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and the greatest risk falls between mid August and mid October. When a storm approaches, operators move their aircraft out of South Florida, so late summer trips need flexible dates.
THE ROAD
Interstate 95 and the causeways
The drive south along Interstate 95 slows sharply between 7 and 9 am and from 5 to 7 pm, and the causeways to Miami Beach clog on weekend evenings and during Art Basel. A landing in the middle of the day gives the easiest run to the hotel.
WAITING
A lounge, a café, even a restaurant
Every FBO at Opa-locka has a passenger lounge with drinks and wireless internet. Signature adds a restaurant, Atlantic a café, and Embassair a hospitality bar and four private boarding lounges.
FRESHEN UP
Showers after the crossing
After the long flight, Signature offers showers with complimentary toiletries, Atlantic has showers too and Fontainebleau Aviation a shower room, so a lunch or a meeting in Brickell can follow straight from the aircraft.
SHOPPING
Duty free on the way out
Embassair has a small duty free boutique with executive retail brands and a wine shop, useful for a last present on the way to the aircraft.
RAMP ACCESS
The car at the steps
Signature, Fontainebleau Aviation, Embassair and Jet Aviation all offer vehicle access to the aircraft, arranged in advance with the driver's details. After a flight from abroad the car meets you once customs are done, and at Embassair golf carts carry passengers and bags between the aircraft and the terminal.
DEPARTURE
From car to aircraft in minutes
There is no exit immigration check when leaving the United States. Line staff take the bags from the car, at the terminal door or at the aircraft when cars are allowed onto the ramp, and 20 to 30 minutes before the departure time is usually enough.
ISLANDS
The Bahamas next door
Nassau is about 45 to 50 minutes away by jet and the Exumas a little more. The flight back to Opa-locka clears US customs on arrival, so passports and ESTA must still be valid for the return.
CLOCKS
Five hours, four for three weeks
Miami runs on Eastern Time like New York. Because Britain and America change their clocks on different Sundays, the usual five hour gap narrows to four from 25 October to 1 November 2026 and again from 14 to 28 March 2027.
JET LAG
Out at 11, in by teatime
Leave London at 11 am and the G650 lands at Opa-locka at about 3 pm local time, leaving the evening for a swim and an early night. The overnight flight home arrives in Britain the next morning.
TIPPING
Check the bill first
Many restaurants in Miami Beach add a service charge of around 18 to 20 per cent automatically, so read the bill before leaving a tip on top. Chauffeurs usually receive 15 to 20 per cent unless the fare includes it.
SALES TAX
Seven per cent, more at hotels
Sales tax in Miami-Dade County is 7 per cent, and hotels in Miami Beach add local resort taxes on top of the room rate. As elsewhere in America, visitors cannot claim the tax back when they leave.
BY AIRLINE
Heathrow to Miami by airline
British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and American Airlines fly nonstop between Heathrow and Miami International. If an empty leg covers just one way, the other direction can be booked in first or business class.
PETS
Florida wants a rabies record
Besides the federal CDC rules for dogs, Florida expects dogs and cats over three months old to be vaccinated against rabies. Signature's terminal at Opa-locka welcomes pets. Carry the vaccination record and a recent health certificate.

Customs at Opa-locka rarely take long; the clock and the traffic outside the gate are what shape the day, and both are planned when the flight is booked.

Four rules that shape a Miami trip

A jet built for nine hours
London to Miami is about 3,800 nautical miles, further than New York by some 800. A Gulfstream G650, a Global 6000 or a Falcon 7X flies it nonstop, while a G450 or a Challenger 650 may need a fuel stop westbound against the winter winds.
The operator decides the ESTA
The United States accepts an ESTA from passengers of a private or charter jet only when their operator is a signatory carrier under the Visa Waiver Program. We confirm this before every Miami quote, because otherwise each passenger would need a visa.
Watch the customs clock
Opa-locka clears arrivals from 9 am to midnight, Miami Executive from 10 am to 8 pm, Fort Lauderdale Executive from 8 am until 11.30 pm and Miami International around the clock. The departure time from Britain is set to match.
Plan around the season
Art Basel, Christmas, the boat show and the Grand Prix fill every ramp in the county, and hurricane season can cancel a late summer flight at short notice. Book the peak weeks early and keep the autumn dates flexible.

With these four settled, a Miami trip is as simple as a flight to the south of France, only longer. Ignore them, and the arrival can end at the wrong airport, in the wrong week or with a visa missing.

Private jet on the apron before departure

What the ground costs in Miami

Airport charges in Florida are modest next to the flight itself; taxes and peak season parking make the difference.

On the invoice
A landing fee by weight set by Miami-Dade County, the FBO's handling or facility fee, often reduced when the jet takes fuel, and parking, which is scarce in Art Basel and Grand Prix weeks
Federal taxes
The US arrival and departure tax, 23.40 dollars a passenger each way on charter flights in 2026, plus customs user fees, normally built into the operator quote
Air Passenger Duty
Miami falls in Band B: 1,097 GBP per passenger at the higher rate until March 2027 and 1,132.76 GBP from April, charged on a G650 and every other jet of 20 tonnes or more with fewer than 19 seats

The duty is due only on the departure from Britain, and a flight from Jersey or Guernsey pays none, because the islands lie outside the United Kingdom for this duty. The April 2027 change, which extends the higher rate to every private jet from 5.7 tonnes, makes no difference on this route, because every jet able to cross nonstop already pays it. The United States adds its arrival and departure tax in each direction, together with the customs and inspection user fees already built into the operator quote.

A winter in Florida usually lasts longer than a crew can wait, so after the drop most aircraft fly home and return for the pickup. Those two crossings are the empty legs that lower someone else's fare, and our quotes list the airport charges, the car and any onward island flight beside the price of the jet.

Miami International, Fort Lauderdale and the other airports around Miami

South Florida offers a wide choice of private airports, and the right one depends on the address, the hour and the season.

Miami International, MIA. About 6 miles northwest of downtown, with Signature's FBO on the north side and customs for private aircraft around the clock at the Miami General Aviation Center next door. Nearest for Brickell, Coral Gables and Key Biscayne, but airline traffic makes it slower and dearer than Opa-locka.
Miami Executive, TMB. The former Kendall-Tamiami, 13 miles southwest of downtown, with Signature, Reliance and International Flight Center, whose new terminal has lounges, en suite snooze rooms and a café. Customs work from 10 am to 8 pm, and its longest runway of 6,000 feet suits most business jets on shorter trips.
Fort Lauderdale Executive, FXE. About 30 miles north of downtown Miami and 5 miles north of Fort Lauderdale, with Signature, Banyan, Atlantic and W Aviation and a control tower open around the clock. Customs clear arrivals from 8 am, and the last aircraft must be parked on the customs ramp by 11.30 pm. Fontainebleau Aviation opened a second terminal at nearby Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International in December 2024.
Palm Beach, DJT. President Donald J. Trump International Airport, called Palm Beach International until July 2026, lies some 70 miles up the coast. Signature, Atlantic and Jet Aviation look after private flights there, and customs work from 8.30 am to 7.30 pm. The island of Palm Beach is 10 minutes away, and flights face restrictions while the President is staying at Mar-a-Lago.
Key West, EYW. At the end of the Keys, three and a half to four hours by road from Miami but well under an hour by jet, with its own customs for flights from abroad.
The Bahamas, NAS. Nassau is 45 to 50 minutes from South Florida, and the Exumas, Harbour Island and Bimini are close by. Many aircraft return from the islands to Opa-locka empty, which is where the short Caribbean sectors on the board come from.

From Opa-locka to Miami Beach and beyond

Typical drives from Opa-locka when the roads are clear. Weekday peaks on Interstate 95, weekend evenings on the causeways and the big weeks of the season can add half an hour or more.

Destination By road Notes
Bal Harbour and Sunny Isles 20 to 30 minutes Beachfront hotels and the Bal Harbour shops, north along the coast
Aventura About 20 minutes Residential towers and the Aventura mall
Downtown and Brickell 20 to 35 minutes Miami International is closer for a late arrival
Wynwood and the Design District 20 to 30 minutes Galleries, and the satellite fairs of Art Basel week
South Beach 30 to 45 minutes Across the Julia Tuttle or MacArthur causeway
Coral Gables and Coconut Grove 30 to 45 minutes Miami International or Miami Executive are nearer
Key Biscayne 40 to 55 minutes Over the Rickenbacker Causeway
Fisher Island 35 to 45 minutes to the ferry Reached only by ferry, private boat or helicopter
Hard Rock Stadium About 10 minutes The Miami Grand Prix and Dolphins games; Opa-locka is the closest airport
Fort Lauderdale 30 to 40 minutes Fort Lauderdale Executive suits addresses further north
Palm Beach About 1h 30m Better to fly straight to the Palm Beach airport, now DJT
Key West 3h 30m to 4h Along the Overseas Highway; the flight takes well under an hour

Chauffeured cars and SUVs are the usual way into the city, and the better firms follow the flight and wait at the FBO door. For Fisher Island or a yacht moored in the bay, ask for the transfer to be arranged with the boat, since the last miles are over water.

Car transfer from the private jet terminal

Popular routes between the UK and Miami, and which way they run empty

Each figure is the price of a whole Gulfstream G650 on a transatlantic sector released by its operator, because the aircraft has to cross anyway. Chartered on dates of your own, the same jet costs more than twice as much, and the charter list under the board shows those numbers. Flight times cover the air time only, and the westbound figure is always the higher one, since the jet stream blows against the aircraft on the way out.

Arriving in Miami from the UK

Opa-locka has its own US customs station, so passports, travel authorisations and luggage are checked at the airport itself, on the customs ramp beside the runways.

  • Passport. British travellers need a passport that stays valid for the length of the visit, according to the Foreign Office, and an ESTA can only be issued against a chipped passport, which all current British passports are.
  • ESTA. The fee is about 40 dollars, and one approval covers any number of visits of up to 90 days over two years, ending early if the passport expires. Apply at least 72 hours before the flight, include the selfie photograph the form now asks for, and remember that further questions, including about social media, have been proposed.
  • The operator. On a private or charter flight the ESTA counts only if the operator belongs to the Visa Waiver Program. Without that, anyone who would normally travel on an ESTA needs a full US visa.
  • Island trips. A side trip to the Bahamas or elsewhere in the Caribbean does not restart the 90 days; the time away counts as part of the same visit.
  • Duty free into the US. Free of duty, a visitor may bring in 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars, a litre of alcohol from the age of 21 and, for a stay of at least 72 hours, gifts worth up to 100 dollars, which may include up to 100 cigars. Declare all food at the border, since meat, fresh fruit and vegetables face strict limits.
  • Cash. Sums above 10,000 dollars, in cash or instruments such as traveller's cheques, are reported to the officers both on arrival and when leaving.
  • Coming home. Arriving in Great Britain by private aircraft, each traveller aged 17 or over may bring 4 litres of spirits, 18 litres of wine, including sparkling wine from 1 October 2026, 42 litres of beer and 200 cigarettes, and every traveller may bring other goods worth up to 270 GBP. Anything made from meat or milk in the United States has to be left behind.

Empty leg calendar for Miami, month by month

Miami runs on a sharp winter season and a long, hot, quiet summer, and the empty legs follow the movement of owners and families between the two.

Demand
What draws travellers to Miami in each month, from the winter season and events to summer family trips, and how it pushes charter prices.
Empty legs
How often Miami sectors come up in a typical month, and how deep the discount against a full charter tends to be.

January
Very busyStrong
New Year departures in the first week, when transatlantic jets cross back to collect families, then the height of the snowbird season.
February
Very busyGood
The Miami International Boat Show from 10 to 14 February 2027, Presidents' Day weekend and British half term fill hotels and ramps alike.
March
BusyGood
The Miami Open tennis from 14 to 28 March 2027, American spring breaks and the music festivals of late March. Easter Sunday falls on 28 March.
April
BusyStrong
The season closes after Easter and owners head north, so April brings some of the best sectors from New York down to Florida, as well as transatlantic sectors around Easter.
May
BusyGood
The Miami Grand Prix at Hard Rock Stadium from 30 April to 2 May 2027 packs Opa-locka for a long weekend, then the snowbird migration north finishes.
June
QuietFair
Hurricane season opens on 1 June. Hotels drop their rates, the few flights are mostly local owners and Caribbean trips, and occasional westbound sectors from Scotland and Ireland follow American golf trips.
July
QuietThin
Hot, humid weeks, with thunderstorms most afternoons. Few Europeans come, although summer rates can make it a good value month.
August
QuietThin
The start of the peak hurricane weeks. Flights run, but operators keep an eye on the forecast and dates should stay flexible.
September
QuietThin
One of the quietest months in the air, and the time of the highest risk of storms.
October
SteadyFair
The first owners return from the north by the end of the month, and empty sectors from Miami back to the northeast begin to reappear.
November
BusyGood
The snowbirds arrive in force, Thanksgiving on 26 November brings families together, and the winter season begins.
December
Very busyStrong
Art Basel Miami Beach, with VIP days on 2 and 3 December and public days from 4 to 6 December 2026, then Christmas and New Year, among the busiest weeks of the year at Opa-locka and the time when most transatlantic sectors appear.

The best transatlantic sectors come in the first week of January, before Christmas and in April. For domestic and island legs, look from November to May, and keep late summer dates flexible because of the storms.

Three situations, three answers

Christmas on Miami Beach and the islands
Book the crossing in the autumn, land at Opa-locka a few days before Christmas and add a hop to Nassau or the Exumas for New Year. For the flight home, remember that in the first days of January most jets cross westbound empty to collect families, so eastbound sectors are rarer. Returning a week or two later, when aircraft that brought guests out for the rest of the winter head back to Europe, improves the odds.
Art Basel week
Opa-locka and Miami International fill quickly in the first week of December, and some aircraft drop their passengers and leave for Fort Lauderdale or Palm Beach to park. Fix the dates early, land before the VIP days and plan the drive across to Miami Beach around the evening traffic.
A whole winter in Florida
For a stay of two or three months the jet flies you out in January and returns for you after Easter, and both repositioning crossings go on the board. Travellers who can be flexible by a few days often cover one direction with somebody else's empty leg.

Flying to Miami with a dog or a cat

The United States sets the federal rules and Florida adds its own. For a dog from Britain the CDC asks for a microchip, a minimum age of six months, six months spent only in Britain or other countries free of dog rabies, and the receipt for the CDC Dog Import Form, filled in online before departure; such a dog may arrive at any US airport, Opa-locka included. The CDC sets nothing for cats, but Florida expects dogs and cats over three months old to be vaccinated against rabies, so carry the vaccination record and a recent health certificate from your vet.

The return journey to Great Britain is stricter. The animal must be microchipped and vaccinated against rabies at least 21 days before it lands, and it may come back on a private flight only along a route approved for animals and with an approved operator. A dog must also be treated for tapeworm by a vet between one and five days before landing, and every pet travels with a health certificate for Great Britain signed by a USDA accredited vet and endorsed by the USDA, arriving within ten days of that endorsement. Mention the pet in your first message, and every aircraft we propose will come from an operator that accepts animals.

Questions about flying private to Miami

What is the flight time from London to Miami?
About 9h 10m westbound in a Gulfstream G650 and 8h 15m on the way back. Departures from Scotland and Ireland save between 20 and 45 minutes.
Which Miami airport should we use?
Opa-locka for Miami Beach, Bal Harbour and downtown, Miami International for a landing after 11 pm or for Brickell and Coral Gables, and Fort Lauderdale or Palm Beach for addresses further north.
Is there a VIP terminal at Opa-locka?
There are five, one for each FBO. Signature has a restaurant and showers, Embassair private boarding lounges and a duty free boutique, and Fontainebleau Aviation a hotel style service inspired by the Fontainebleau hotel on Miami Beach.
Can the car meet us at the aircraft?
For departures and domestic arrivals usually yes, once the driver's details have been sent to the FBO. After a flight from abroad the chauffeur waits until the officers have cleared you and your bags.
What does an empty leg to or from Miami cost?
On a Gulfstream G650, from 48,100 GBP for a sector from Miami to an English airport and from 54,600 GBP for London to Miami, against roughly 115,000 to 130,000 GBP for the same crossing as a full charter.
Can a G450 fly to Miami without stopping?
Usually yes eastbound, but westbound in winter it may need a fuel stop against the headwinds. A G650, Global 6000 or Falcon 7X crosses nonstop in both directions.
Do we need an ESTA on a private jet?
Yes, and the operator must belong to the Visa Waiver Program for it to count. We check that in every quote.
Is it safe to fly in hurricane season?
Flights run normally on most days, but when a storm is forecast the aircraft move away and trips can be cancelled or moved at short notice. Between August and October we recommend flexible dates.
Can we fly on to the Bahamas?
Easily. Nassau is under an hour from Opa-locka, and the aircraft that took you there can bring you back, or an empty leg from the islands may already be on the board.
And if nothing is released for my dates?
Tell us the airport you would leave from, the dates and how much room they have to move. We follow Opa-locka, Miami International and the rest of South Florida and write as soon as a sector fits, most often in December, early January and April.

Call +44 7857 574938 , message the same number on WhatsApp , or write to flight@empty-leg.co.uk . Let us know where in Miami you are staying, the dates, how many passengers and bags are travelling and whether a pet is coming, and we will reply with matching sectors, a full charter price, the ground costs and a confirmation that the operator is approved for ESTA travel.
