Empty leg flights from RAF Northolt

Northolt is usually the quickest run into the West End of any London business aviation field, thirteen miles from Mayfair and about thirty five minutes from Hyde Park on a good run. It is also a working Royal Air Force station, and everything else about flying from here follows from that one fact.

Northolt produces very few empty legs compared with the other London fields, and the reasons are structural rather than seasonal. If a repositioning sector is what you are after, you will usually find it at Farnborough, Luton, Biggin Hill or Stansted, and it pays to plan around that from the start.

The board below shows what has been released across our operator network. If little or nothing is listed for Northolt, that is the normal state of this airport rather than a failure of the feed, and the other London fields are where the sectors run on the same days.

Sectors on this list do not touch RAF Northolt itself. They are shown because the fields are close enough that the drive rarely costs you more than waiting for the right sector does. Tell us which one interests you and we will confirm it is still open.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.

Set up an alert for RAF Northolt

Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up at RAF Northolt.

Please fill in both the departure and the arrival city.

Nothing is stored on this site. The button opens a chat with the message already written, and you send it yourself. We reply during office hours, 07:00 to 23:00, and check messages outside them too.

Why Northolt produces so few empty legs

An empty leg exists because an operator decides, often at short notice, to move an aircraft. Three features of Northolt make that decision difficult, and together they explain almost everything about availability here.

Permission takes time
Prior permission is required for every flight, with a minimum of four hours for arrivals from the European Union and twenty four hours for everything else, including domestic flights within the UK. An operator cannot count on deciding at lunchtime to reposition here the same afternoon.
Slots are limited
Civil flights run on a limited number of slots, allocated in advance around the station's own activity. Every slot is therefore spent on paying passengers rather than on empty aircraft being shuffled between jobs.
The RAF comes first
This is a military station with a civil enclave rather than an airport with a military tenant. A civil movement can be delayed or withdrawn to make room for a military or government requirement, sometimes at short notice.

So what should you do with that? If Northolt specifically is what you want, plan a standard charter and give us notice. A fortnight gives you the best chance of the slot you want. The airport rewards planning and punishes improvisation, and a booked slot here is worth more than a bargain somewhere inconvenient.

If the price is what you are after, look at Farnborough, Luton, Biggin Hill and Stansted instead, and accept a longer drive. That trade can be worth several thousand pounds.

Seasonal demand for repositioning flights

The corridors that run from here

Northolt traffic is business travel rather than holidays, and it concentrates on short European sectors where the time saved on the ground is the whole point of the exercise.

Corridor Flight time When it runs Why it matters
Paris Le Bourget 1h 05m Year round The classic Northolt trip. Out in the morning from Mayfair, back the same evening, with under an hour by road at either end
Amsterdam 1h 05m Year round Corporate day returns, and one of the most common weekday movements
Geneva 1h 35m Year round, heaviest in winter Banking and family office traffic keeps this running outside the ski season, unlike most Alpine routes
Zurich 1h 35m Year round The same pattern as Geneva, with a lift around the January conference season
Milan 1h 50m Year round Business in both directions, with a clear spike around the fashion and design weeks
Dublin 1h 15m Year round One of the few international routes on which Northolt accepts a dog or a cat, because arrivals from Ireland are on the station's list
Nice 1h 55m May to September The main seasonal route here, and the one where the weekend restriction bites hardest

Transatlantic departures are possible on the right aircraft but constrained. The usable take off run is shorter than the paved length, so a long range jet leaving for New York may not be able to carry full fuel, and operators frequently route those trips through Stansted or Luton instead. If your trip is long haul, expect us to suggest one of them.

Corporate airliners of the ACJ or BBJ class are generally not accommodated. Single engine aircraft need specific approval from the station, and civil flights are limited to 29 passengers
Operating hours Monday to Friday 08:00 to 20:00, and 10:00 to 17:00 on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays, when a weekend surcharge applies. Movements outside these hours need special arrangement, carry a surcharge and are never guaranteed
Permissions A slot and prior permission are both mandatory. Four hours minimum for flights inbound from the European Union, twenty four hours for everything else. Aircraft without permission are not admitted under any circumstances
Priority Military and government movements take precedence at all times, and a civil slot can be withdrawn or moved because of them
Border control Northolt is not a designated port of entry and has no permanent customs or Border Force presence. Officers attend by arrangement for international arrivals, and if they are unavailable a slot can be cancelled
Parking Available for long stays, with the first two hours included in the landing fee, then charged by the hour up to 72 hours and by the day after that. Hangarage is not routinely offered, can be requested only for engineering work and is not guaranteed
History Opened in 1915, before the Royal Air Force itself existed, and in continuous military use ever since, which makes it one of the oldest operational airfields in the country

Arriving at a military station

No other London airport works like this, and it is worth knowing before you travel rather than discovering at the barrier.

THE GATE
Everybody shows photo identification
Passengers and crew must produce photographic identification at the gate before they are allowed onto the station. It takes a few minutes, it is not optional, and a forgotten passport or driving licence can end the trip there.
ON THE STATION
No photography on the station
Crew and passengers are prohibited from taking photographs once past the gate clearance point, including of their own chartered aircraft. It is a live military installation and the rule is enforced.
DOCUMENTS
Details go in early and in full
Names, aircraft details, timings and handling requirements are submitted well in advance through a single booking channel. Same day requests are not routinely accepted and are considered case by case, which is why this airport suits planned travel.
THE UPSIDE
Privacy that is not marketing
Security is real rather than decorative and there is no public side to the airfield. For anyone who needs discretion, that counts for a great deal.

What the terminal is actually like

There is one civil terminal, separate from the military side of the station, run by a single licensed handling provider that manages the slot and permission process on your behalf. You do not choose an FBO here and you never deal with the station directly.

The building is modest, and the time it saves is what you are paying for.

INSIDE
Functional rather than plush
A passenger lounge, a meeting room, wireless internet and refreshments. No restaurant, no shops and nothing designed to be photographed. What it does have is quiet, and a walk to the aircraft measured in metres.
BAGGAGE
Aircraft to boot, nothing in between
Bags come off the aircraft and go straight into your vehicle, in the boot unless you ask otherwise. No desk, no belt, no tags, and no waiting in a hall for something that was twenty metres away the whole time.
FORMALITIES
Arranged per flight, not permanent
Because this is not a designated port of entry, clearance is set up for each international arrival in advance, and the handler takes you to the officers. With documents in order, ramp to car is a matter of minutes.
CATERING
Ordered in, not made here
The station has no catering facilities of its own for civil users, so catering for the flight is requested through the handling provider and delivered to the aircraft. That works well when it is arranged with the booking and not at all when it is remembered on the morning.
YOUR CAR
You can leave it on the station
Passengers and crew may park their own vehicles on site, for a daily charge added to the handling invoice. For a two day trip from west London it removes the chauffeur from the equation entirely.
THE POINT
You are buying the thirteen miles
Farnborough sells a terminal, Biggin Hill sells long opening hours, Stansted sells space. Northolt sells its position on the map and the fact that nobody can see in. Judge it on that and it is excellent. Judge it on the lounge and you will be disappointed.

Allow around twenty minutes before a domestic departure and thirty before an international one, counting the check at the gate as well as the terminal. Inside the building it is as quick as anywhere in London, but the gate is unfamiliar on a first visit and is the part people underestimate.

What Northolt does not have

Facilities are usually listed by what an airport has. At Northolt the gaps are more useful to know, and beyond the terminal itself there are four that catch people out.

No routine hangarage. Aircraft park on the ramp. Hangar space can be requested only for engineering purposes and is not guaranteed, so a winter overnight stop is outdoors.
No airliners. Corporate airliners are generally not accommodated and civil flights are limited to 29 passengers, which rules out large group charters.
No late evenings. The civil day ends at 20:00 on weekdays and 17:00 at weekends. Later movements need special arrangement, carry a surcharge and are never guaranteed, so a delayed inbound flight should expect to go elsewhere.
No pets from outside the British Isles. Animals may only arrive from within the British Isles. Anything coming from continental Europe or further afield has to land elsewhere.

None of this makes Northolt a poor airport. It makes it a specific one, suited to a planned weekday trip by a small group who value the short drive and the privacy above everything else.

What the ground costs

Northolt is not the cheapest London field and it is not the most expensive either. The published charges are clear: a flat landing fee for aircraft up to ten tonnes, the first two hours of parking included, and surcharges for weekend and out of hours movements. What it charges for is access rather than luxury, and the real cost of using it is measured in flexibility rather than in pounds.

One handler
no competition on the field, so handling is what it is
Two hours included
aircraft parking is then charged by the hour up to 72 hours and by the day after that
Fuel
supplied by an independent operator under licence on the station
The real cost
giving up the chance of an empty leg in exchange for the location

That last point is the honest arithmetic of this airport. A sector into Farnborough or Luton at empty leg prices can be thousands cheaper than a charter into Northolt, and the difference pays for a great deal of driving. Whether the swap is worth it depends entirely on what your day looks like at the other end.

Getting into London

This is why people put up with the restrictions. For the West End, no other London business aviation field is usually as quick, and on a weekday morning the difference against Farnborough or Luton is close to an hour. These are typical off peak times.

Destination By car Notes
Mayfair and the West End 35 to 50 min Thirteen miles, and the reason most people choose this field
Kensington and Chelsea 30 to 45 min Straight in along the A40, which behaves well outside the peak
Heathrow 20 to 30 min Seven miles, useful when part of a group connects onto a scheduled flight
The City 50 to 75 min Crossing London, so the peak hurts. Biggin Hill or London City are better pairings
The Thames Valley and Buckinghamshire 25 to 45 min Comfortable, and one of the field's quieter advantages
Canary Wharf 60 to 90 min The wrong side of London entirely

South Ruislip Underground station is nearby, but with luggage the car is the practical answer at both ends of the journey, and there is no helicopter shuttle from the airfield.

Empty leg calendar for RAF Northolt, month by month

Northolt runs on corporate and government activity rather than on holidays, so its year is flatter than that of the other London fields. What moves it is the working calendar and the Royal Air Force's own requirements.

Airport activity
How busy the field is, which decides how easily a slot is granted.
Empty legs
How many repositioning sectors reach the market, and how deep the discounts run.

January
BusyThin
The corporate year restarts, the ski season keeps Geneva busy and the January conference season lifts Zurich. Slots go early in the week and very little is released.
February
SteadyThin
Half term barely registers here because families use the fields with longer hours and hangarage. Business travel carries the month.
March
BusyThin
End of the financial year for many companies, and one of the heaviest months for weekday day returns to Paris and Amsterdam.
April
SteadyFair
One of the easiest months to secure a slot at short notice. Business travel dips around Easter and the Mediterranean has not started pulling aircraft away.
May
BusyThin
Cannes draws traffic south, with Monaco following in early June, and the corporate calendar is at full stretch. Book well ahead or accept another field.
June
Very busyThin
The London season. Ascot, Wimbledon and the summer party circuit put pressure on every slot, and this is one of the two hardest months of the year to get in.
July
BusyThin
Military requirements can bring temporary restrictions on civil hours, as they did in August and September 2025. Check before you plan rather than after.
August
SteadyFair
Corporate London empties and demand eases, but in 2025 military requirements cut civil hours through August and September. Check the published hours before counting on a short notice slot.
September
Very busyThin
Everybody comes back at once. The heaviest corporate month of the year and the one where slot requests are most often refused.
October
BusyFair
Still busy, but the wider market is repositioning heavily after the summer, so the sectors that do appear are priced well.
November
SteadyFair
The quietest stretch of the working year and the best time to ask for something awkward. Leave a margin on evening returns, because a late inbound flight still meets the 20:00 close.
December
BusyThin
A concentrated fortnight of business travel, then the station winds down. Almost nothing is released through the holidays, and bank holidays run on the shorter weekend hours.

The pattern is the opposite of the holiday airports: Northolt is at its most difficult when corporate London is at its busiest, in June and September, and at its most obliging in April, August and November, although August can be affected by summer restrictions on civil hours. If your trip is flexible by a few weeks, those are the months to aim for.

Three situations, three answers

A meeting in Paris and back by six
Exactly what this airport is for. Thirty five minutes from Mayfair to the gate, just over an hour in the air, and the same in reverse. Book it as a charter with proper notice and it works very well.
A bargain to the Alps in February
Not here. Look at Farnborough and Luton, where the sectors actually are, and treat the longer drive as the price of saving several thousand pounds.
A trip nobody needs to know about
Northolt, without much competition. A guarded military station with no public access and a photography ban on the airfield is a different proposition from a discreet lounge at a civil airport.

Travelling with a dog or a cat

At Northolt the answer is often no, and it is important to know that before you plan around it. The station accepts dogs and cats only on flights from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and Ireland. A dog coming back from France or Switzerland has to land at an approved airport such as Luton, Farnborough, Biggin Hill or Stansted instead.

Where an animal can travel, there are conditions. Pets must be vaccinated and kept on a leash or in a crate under the owner's control at all times, dogs need a collar and identity tag, and valid third party insurance is required. There are no animal welfare facilities on the station. Some operators also decline animals on their own aircraft. Tell us about the animal at the enquiry stage and we will confirm what applies to your particular routing.

The six London business aviation airports

They are not interchangeable. What decides the right one is usually the time from wheels down to your front door, not the length of the runway or the name on the terminal. On an empty leg the airport comes with the sector, so this is most useful when you are choosing a charter or deciding which routes to watch.

Farnborough
FAB / EGLF
Hours Closed overnight
Runway 2,440 m
Into London 45 to 75 min

Business aviation only and the best terminal in Europe. PPR required. The default for west and south west London, Surrey and Hampshire.

London Luton
LTN / EGGW
Hours 24h airport, night limits
Runway 2,162 m
Into London 45 to 60 min

The widest choice of sectors and two competing FBOs, with no PPR. The airport runs around the clock, but business aviation night movements are restricted and in recent summers have been withdrawn between June and September.

London Biggin Hill
BQH / EGKB
Hours Closed overnight
Runway About 1,800 m
Into London 40 to 70 min to the City

South east London, Kent and Canary Wharf. Helicopter shuttle to Battersea in minutes, and a point of entry for pets on private aircraft.

London Stansted
STN / EGSS
Hours 24h airport, night limits
Runway 3,049 m
Into London 60 to 75 min

The longest runway of the London fields, ramp space when Luton is full, and the home of VIP airliners. Open around the clock, but business aviation night slots are capped and are being reduced.

RAF Northolt
you are here
NHT / EGWU
Hours Long day, not 24 hours
Runway 1,684 m
Into London 35 to 50 min to Park Lane

The shortest drive to Mayfair of any London field. Civil movements are capped and booked well in advance, so availability decides rather than price.

London City
LCY / EGLC
Hours Closes in the evening
Runway 1,508 m, steep approach
Into London 15 to 25 min to Canary Wharf

The only private jet centre inside London. Restricted to certified types flown by specifically approved crews.

Drive times are typical off peak figures and move considerably in the Friday evening peak. Where the road is the problem, a helicopter transfer from Biggin Hill, Luton or Stansted reaches central London in well under half an hour. No London field offers unrestricted business aviation access through the night, so a departure after 23:00 needs planning rather than assuming.

Questions about flying from Northolt

Can I book a flight for tomorrow?
Often, provided the request goes in at least twenty four hours before the movement, or four hours for an arrival from the European Union, and a slot is free. Same day requests are not routinely accepted and are considered case by case, so plan rather than hope.
Can my flight be cancelled by the RAF?
A civil slot can be delayed or withdrawn for a military or government movement. It is uncommon, but it is the reason we would not put an unmissable connection on a Northolt departure without a fallback.
Why are there so few empty legs?
Because repositioning is a short notice decision and this airport makes short notice decisions difficult. Add a limited number of civil slots, which operators would rather spend on paying passengers, and the supply largely disappears.
Is it really quicker into town?
For the West End, Kensington and the Thames Valley, yes, by a wide margin. For the City and Canary Wharf it is not, because you cross the whole of London to get there. The right airport depends on where you are going in London, not on the headline distance.
Can I take photographs of the aircraft?
No. Photography is prohibited beyond the gate clearance point for passengers and crew alike, including of your own aircraft. It is a working military airfield and the rule is enforced.
What aircraft can use it?
Twin engine types from a King Air up to the long range Global and Gulfstream jets. Single engine aircraft need specific approval from the station, so a Pilatus PC-12 or a single engine jet cannot be assumed. Corporate airliners are generally not accommodated, so group charters on converted airliners go to Stansted, and on a long sector the shorter take off run may also limit fuel.

Call +44 7857 574938, message the same number on WhatsApp, or write to flight@empty-leg.co.uk. Northolt needs more notice than the other London fields, so the earlier you tell us the dates, the better the answer we can give you.
