Empty leg flights to and from Marrakech

Marrakech is one of the most exotic cities within easy reach of a British business jet. In about three and a half hours from London you leave the grey of an English winter for the red walls of the Medina, the square of Jemaa el Fna, the Majorelle Garden and the snow on the High Atlas behind the palm groves. The riads and palace hotels of the old city, the villas of the Palmeraie and the desert camps of Agafay draw British visitors from October to May, and the calendar adds the marathon in January, the 1-54 art fair in March and the international film festival in late November. Morocco keeps GMT plus one for most of the year and returns to GMT during Ramadan, so it is an hour ahead of London in winter and on the same time in summer.

For private flights, Marrakech means Marrakech Menara Airport, code RAK, a few kilometres south west of the Medina, where business aircraft use a terminal of their own opened in 2020.

Marrakech sectors available today

Below is every sector we currently hold into or out of Marrakech, together with flights released at Essaouira, Agadir and Ouarzazate, the three Moroccan airports where aircraft most often drop, wait or collect passengers on a trip that also takes in Marrakech. Beneath it sits a second table with the full charter fare of each of those jets, for travellers who choose their own dates.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.

Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up between the UK and Marrakech.

Please fill in both the departure and the arrival city.

Why Marrakech produces so many empty legs

A flight to Marrakech is long enough that operators rarely keep a jet on the ground for the whole stay, and short enough that British travellers make the trip for a long weekend. That combination turns most visits into two separate positioning flights.

Three and a half hours each way
With about 2,300 kilometres between London and Marrakech, an operator that leaves its aircraft in Morocco for a week loses it for a week of work at home. Most jets therefore fly back to Britain after the drop and return for the collection, and both of those flights are sold as empty legs.
Winter sun from October to May
Marrakech is warm when Britain is not, and its season runs from the autumn half term to the late spring. Families come for half terms, Christmas and Easter, couples for long weekends, and each arrival and departure creates a positioning flight.
A strong British market
Marrakech passed 10 million passengers for the first time in 2025, and London Gatwick ranks among its busiest international routes. The private traffic follows the same pattern: British guests, British operators and aircraft that return home between trips.
Few British jets based nearby
The operators that fly British clients keep their jets in Britain or elsewhere in Europe rather than in Morocco, so a private flight from the UK almost always starts and ends at a European base. The aircraft comes home empty or flies out empty, whichever way the passengers are not travelling.
Peak weeks and busy stands
Around Christmas, New Year and the big events, the business aviation apron fills. In high season jets are often repositioned to Casablanca or Agadir, and flights like these add further sectors to the market.

Sectors appear all year, with the most from October to May and around the school holidays. Because each trip is long and the aircraft rarely stays, operators often release the empty flight home only a day or two before departure.

Marrakech Menara Airport in detail

The airfield at Menara was built during the Second World War, when it served American forces on the air routes across North Africa, and it still belongs to the Royal Moroccan Air Force while the state airport authority, ONDA, runs the civil side. It reopened in 1991 after a renovation that lengthened the runway and rebuilt the facilities. In 2025 it handled 10,197,736 passengers, 10.09 per cent more than in 2024, and passed 10 million for the first time, which makes it the second airport of Morocco after Casablanca, with 28 per cent of the national traffic. A contract worth about 1.8 billion dirhams, awarded in 2025 as part of the Airports 2030 programme for the World Cup, will extend the terminal to some 142,000 square metres and raise its capacity to 16 million passengers a year.

Codes RAK (IATA) and GMMX (ICAO)
Location Menara, about 5 kilometres south west of Marrakech and about 15 minutes by car from the Medina
Runway A single asphalt runway, 10/28, of 3,100 metres by 45 metres, long enough for any business jet and for airliners up to the Boeing 747
Elevation 471 metres, or 1,545 feet, above sea level
Operator Office National des Aéroports, ONDA, the Moroccan state airport authority; the airfield is shared with the Royal Moroccan Air Force
Terminals Terminals 1, 2 and 3 for airlines, and a separate terminal for business and private aviation opened in February 2020
Hours The airport, its customs and the business aviation operators work 24 hours a day
Permits Charter flights need a Moroccan landing permit, which handlers ask for at least 48 working hours ahead; private flights that carry no paying passengers need none
Slots Slot coordination for airlines began in November 2024; general aviation and military flights are exempt
Business aviation operators Jetex and Swissport Executive Aviation, both inside the business aviation terminal
Fuel Jet A1 and AVGAS 100LL
Traffic 10,197,736 passengers in 2025
Business aircraft The Hawker 900XP, the Legacy 600 and the Phenom 300 were the types seen most often in 2025

For crews, Marrakech is an easy airport: one long runway, instrument approaches, fuel and customs at any hour and no night closure. The elevation of 471 metres and summer temperatures near 40 degrees reduce the take off performance of a loaded jet, so on hot afternoons an operator may plan a fuel stop on the way north or choose a larger aircraft. Paperwork matters more than at any European airport: a charter needs its Moroccan landing permit before departure, and the civil aviation authority handles requests during office hours, so a weekend flight is best requested by Thursday.

The business aviation terminal and its two operators

Private passengers at Marrakech never enter the airline terminals. Since February 2020 they have used a terminal built only for business and private aviation, the second of its kind in Morocco after Casablanca, where ONDA keeps a central area for passport control and security screening and two private operators, chosen by international tender, run the lounges and the handling on either side.

A terminal with Moroccan character
The building covers about 3,000 square metres, and the project included access taxiways, stands for aircraft and a car park. Its architecture draws on traditional Moroccan design, which gives arriving guests a first taste of the country before they reach the city.
Jetex Marrakech
The Jetex side of the terminal has furniture by Zaha Hadid and about 25,000 square metres of aircraft parking. Its lounge offers teas chosen by the company's own tea sommelier, gourmet refreshments served at the table, quiet corners for work and a library of books and magazines, and customs and immigration are completed while guests wait in the lounge. Built for about 35 million dirhams, the Jetex FBO is one of the largest in its network. It works around the clock with an executive lounge, a crew lounge, catering, cars for passengers and crews, and staff who speak several languages.
Swissport and its crew floor
Swissport opened its part of the terminal in February 2020, investing 7.5 million dirhams in more than 500 square metres. Its main lounge takes up to 40 passengers and has a bar and a media corner, and a separate VVIP room seats nine for guests who want complete privacy. On the first floor, an area for up to 18 crew members offers a television lounge, a kitchen, two bedrooms and bathrooms with showers, so pilots can rest properly before the flight home.
Customs and police in the terminal
Moroccan police and customs work in ONDA's central area of the terminal, so passports, luggage and any currency declaration are handled a few steps from the lounge, and the handler presents the documents on your behalf.
No restaurant, but catering
Neither lounge is a restaurant. Drinks and refreshments are on offer, with table service at Jetex. For a Moroccan mezze or a full meal on board, the handler orders from caterers in the city, ideally a day ahead. For a proper lunch, the city is fifteen minutes away.
Baggage without a belt
There is no baggage hall and no carousel. On arrival the handler takes the bags from the hold to ONDA's control area, where customs may inspect them, and then to your car; on departure the bags and the passengers pass the same security screening in the terminal before the handler loads them into the hold. Airline style limits do not apply, but the size of the hold does, so golf bags and large cases are declared when you book.
Cars at the door
The terminal has its own car park, so a driver, a hotel car or friends collecting you wait a few steps from the lounge instead of in the crowds outside the airline terminals.
Parking for the aircraft
The apron of the business aviation terminal takes several business jets at once, and Jetex offers stands where an aircraft can manoeuvre under its own power for a quick turn. In the peak weeks, space runs short and operators may send the jet on to Casablanca or Agadir until the flight home.

The operator of the aircraft normally chooses between Jetex and Swissport, but we can ask for one of them if you prefer its lounge.

From the aircraft to your riad, step by step

Between touchdown at Menara and the door of your riad there are only a few formalities, and the order is simply reversed on the way home.

ON THE APRON
A short ride to the terminal
A member of the handling team meets the aircraft and drives you across the apron to the business aviation terminal, a journey of a minute or two, with your luggage following in a second vehicle if needed.
PASSPORTS
Moroccan police in the terminal
Morocco is outside the EU, so the European Entry/Exit System does not apply. The police check each passport and stamp it on arrival and departure, and the handler presents the documents, which usually takes a few minutes.
CUSTOMS
Currency and drones
Moroccan customs look at the luggage in the terminal. Large sums in foreign cash go on a declaration form, and drones need prior permission from the Moroccan civil aviation authority, so leave them at home.
LUGGAGE
From the hold to the car
The handler unloads the bags, takes them through customs and loads them into your car, and on the way home carries them from the car through the security scanner to the aircraft. Golf bags are common in Marrakech; mention them in advance so that the right vehicle is waiting.
THE LOUNGES
A seat if you are early
Most private passengers pass straight through, but the lounges of Jetex and Swissport offer a comfortable seat and drinks if you are early or waiting for the rest of the party.
THE CAR
Your driver at the door
The handler books a car, or your hotel sends its own, and many hotels and riads collect guests at the private terminal; cars cannot enter the lanes of the Medina, so the last few hundred metres to a riad are covered on foot, with a porter and a handcart for the bags.
MONEY
Get dirhams in the city
The dirham is a closed currency, so you cannot buy it in Britain in any quantity, and you should spend or change it before leaving. Cash machines are easy to find in the city, and hotels and larger restaurants take cards.
WHEN TO ARRIVE
Thirty minutes is plenty
For the flight home, reach the business aviation terminal about 30 minutes before departure. The police stamp the passports and the security check takes place in the terminal, with no queues from the airline terminals.
LATE FLIGHTS
Open through the night
The airport, customs and both operators work around the clock, so landing after dinner or leaving before dawn costs nothing extra in paperwork.
AIRLINE ONE WAY
Lounges in the airline terminal
If you fly privately only one way, British Airways links Marrakech with London, and easyJet, Ryanair, Jet2 and TUI fly from London and several British regional airports. In the main airline terminal, Swissport runs an Aspire lounge, and in Terminal 1 Royal Air Maroc's Oasis Lounge after security admits business class passengers of oneworld airlines, British Airways among them.

Paperwork is the main constraint on a Moroccan trip, so we settle the landing permit, the choice of terminal operator and, over Christmas or New Year, the parking plan for the jet at the time of booking.

Five things to know before booking Marrakech

Every quote we prepare for Marrakech covers the following points from the start, because each of them can change the price or the timing.

A Moroccan landing permit
Charter flights need a landing permit from the Moroccan civil aviation authority, requested through the handler at least 48 working hours before departure. The authority handles requests during office hours, so plan ahead for flights at the weekend.
Range and the aircraft
The flight is about three and a half hours from London and up to 4h 20m from Aberdeen. A light jet manages it comfortably from the south of England, but from Aberdeen or Edinburgh, or with a full cabin on a hot day, a midsize aircraft avoids a fuel stop.
Heat in summer
From June to September afternoon temperatures near 40 degrees make the city hard work and reduce the take off performance of an aircraft. The season for Marrakech is October to May, and the summer brings fewer flights and fewer sectors.
Ramadan and the clock
During Ramadan Morocco sets its clocks back to GMT, and the pace of the city changes, with quieter days and busy evenings. In 2027 Ramadan is expected to run from about 8 February to 8 March, depending on the moon.
Taxes are few
Morocco levies an air tax for solidarity and tourism promotion on international passengers, 100 dirhams in economy and 400 in business or first class, collected by the carrier; on a private charter the operator includes any amount due in its quote. On the British side, the only duty is on the outbound leg.

From the airport to the Medina, the Palmeraie and the Atlas

The airport sits close to the old city, and most hotels are reached within half an hour. The times below are by car from the business aviation terminal, outside the rush hours.

Destination From Menara What is there
Hivernage and La Mamounia About 15 minutes The hotels of the Hivernage quarter, the Menara gardens and La Mamounia by the Bab Jdid gate
Medina and Jemaa el Fna About 15 minutes The riads, the souks and the great square, reached on foot from the nearest gate
Gueliz and the Majorelle Garden About 20 minutes The modern city, its galleries and the blue garden of Yves Saint Laurent
The golf resorts south of the city About 20 to 30 minutes Resort hotels, villas and golf courses among the olive groves
Palmeraie About 30 minutes The villas, golf courses and hotels in the palm grove north of the Medina
Agafay desert About 45 minutes Stony desert, luxury camps and sunsets over the Atlas
Ourika valley About 1 hour Waterfalls, Berber villages and riverside restaurants
Asni and Imlil About 1h 15m to 1h 30m The mountain lodges below Toubkal, the highest peak of North Africa
Oukaïmeden About 1h 30m Skiing in the High Atlas when the winter brings snow
Essaouira About 2h 45m The walled port on the Atlantic, the wind and the beaches
Ouarzazate About 4 hours The kasbahs and film studios over the Tizi n'Tichka pass

Taxis wait outside the airline terminals, but after a private flight a car booked through the handler or the hotel is simpler, and the driver waits at the business aviation terminal whatever the time of landing.

Taxes, fees and currency on a Marrakech trip

A Marrakech trip carries a short list of charges besides the aircraft: British duty on the way out, the Moroccan air tax where it applies, and a small tourist tax on hotel nights.

UK duty
Air Passenger Duty on the flight out of Britain, Band A, for jets of 5.7 tonnes or more
Moroccan air tax
100 dirhams in economy and 400 in business or first class on international passengers, included by the operator where it applies
Tourist tax
a few dozen dirhams a person a night, set by the class of the hotel or riad
Currency
the dirham cannot be bought abroad in quantity; declare foreign currency worth 100,000 dirhams or more

Air Passenger Duty falls only on the leg leaving the UK, and Morocco is in Band A. Until the end of March 2027 each passenger pays 32 GBP in a private jet of between 5.7 and 20 tonnes and 142 GBP in anything larger, and from April 2027 the duty becomes one figure, 146.63 GBP, whatever the size of the jet above 5.7 tonnes. Aircraft under 5.7 tonnes are exempt, as are departures from the Channel Islands, and from April 2027 departures from Scotland pay the Scottish tax instead.

The Moroccan air tax was created in 2014 and written into the general tax code from January 2022; children under two and passengers in direct transit are exempt. The operator settles the Menara landing, parking and handling bills itself, so none of them reaches you as a separate charge.

Essaouira, Agadir and the other airports of southern Morocco

Marrakech Menara is the natural airport for the city, but a trip to Morocco often continues to the coast or the desert, and other airports matter when the apron at Menara is full.

Marrakech Menara, GMMX. The main airport, with a runway of 3,100 metres, a terminal for business aviation, and customs and handling at any hour.
Essaouira Mogador, GMMI. About 15 kilometres from the walled port on the Atlantic, with a runway of 2,100 metres, enough for most light and midsize jets, and the shortest route to the beach villas of the coast.
Agadir Al Massira, GMAD. About 20 kilometres south east of Agadir, with a runway of 3,200 metres; a resort in its own right and the airport where jets often wait when Marrakech is full.
Ouarzazate, GMMZ. Beyond the High Atlas, with a runway of 3,100 metres, for the kasbahs, the film studios and the road into the Sahara.
Casablanca Mohammed V, GMMN. The country's largest airport and the first with its own business aviation terminal, about two and a half hours by motorway from Marrakech and a common choice for repositioning in the peak weeks.

Popular routes between the UK and Marrakech, and which way they run empty

Every fare below is for the entire aircraft on a flight that is going anyway, whether you fill two seats or all of them, and the times shown are spent in the air. Marrakech lies about 2,300 kilometres from London, the far end of the range for the smallest jets, so our list runs from a Citation M2 on the Jersey route and a Citation CJ2 on the Southampton route to a Challenger 350 or a Praetor 600 for larger parties. For a trip on fixed dates, compare these fares with the standard charter figures listed higher up.

Sectors between Britain and Marrakech gather around Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, and around the half term holidays in October, February and May. Because an aircraft rarely waits three or four days in Morocco, flights from Marrakech back to Britain are released most often, frequently at a day's notice.

Entering Morocco: passports, customs and money

Morocco is outside the EU and outside Schengen, so the European rules do not apply. Moroccan police and customs clear every private flight from Britain in the business aviation terminal.

  • Passport. The British Foreign Office asks for a passport valid for at least three months from the day you arrive, and a damaged one can be refused.
  • Visa. British citizens need no visa for a holiday of up to 90 days; a longer stay needs an extension from the Moroccan police.
  • No EU checks. The Entry/Exit System and ETIAS belong to Schengen and do not apply in Morocco, where the police simply stamp the passport.
  • Currency. The dirham is not convertible abroad. Foreign currency worth 100,000 dirhams or more, roughly 8,000 GBP, must be declared on arrival and on departure.
  • Customs. Visitors may usually bring 200 cigarettes, a litre of spirits and a litre of wine free of duty. Drones need prior permission from the civil aviation authority; without it they can be confiscated and fined.
  • Back to Britain. On the flight home each adult may land, duty free, 200 cigarettes, 4 litres of spirits or 9 of fortified wine, 18 litres of still wine, 42 litres of beer and other goods up to 270 GBP; from 1 October 2026 sparkling wine joins the wine allowance and cider the beer allowance.

Three situations, three answers

A long weekend in a riad
Leave on Thursday evening, land after dinner, and wake in the Medina. Few operators leave a jet idle in Morocco for four days, so the trip is usually priced as two separate flights, and the empty positioning legs around it are the ones to watch.
New Year in the Palmeraie
The last week of December is among the busiest of the year at Menara. Book the aircraft, the permit and the villa together, well ahead, and expect the jet to reposition to Casablanca or Agadir if the apron is full.
A week of walking in the Atlas
Fly to Marrakech, drive about an hour and a half to Imlil or Asni, and fly home from the same airport. The aircraft returns to Britain in between, and both of its empty flights can appear on our list.

Flying to Marrakech with a dog or a cat

Morocco asks for a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination, an official veterinary health certificate and, for a temporary stay, a rabies antibody blood test taken at least 30 days after vaccination and showing at least 0.5 IU per millilitre. Pit bulls, boerboels and tosas are not admitted. Tell the handler about the animal in advance so that the veterinary check is arranged, and check with the riad or hotel that pets are welcome.

Dog in the cabin of a private jet to Marrakech

The return is the harder part. Morocco is not on Britain's list of approved countries, so a pet coming home needs a passing rabies blood test, and if the rules are not met before departure it may have to wait three months from the blood sample before it can enter. Arrange the test with your vet in Britain well before the trip. Only operators approved by the British authorities may carry the animal back, and dogs also need the tapeworm treatment 24 to 120 hours before landing. Mention the animal when you first write, so that our search is limited to operators that accept pets on this route.

About 3h 10m from Jersey, 3h 25m to 3h 35m from Southampton, Bristol, Cardiff, London, Farnborough, Biggin Hill and Oxford, 3h 40m to 4h 00m from Birmingham, Dublin, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Belfast and Newcastle, and 4h 05m to 4h 20m from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.
Can the aircraft wait for me in Marrakech?
It can, but the operator often prefers to fly home and come back, because a week in Morocco means a week without work for the jet, and in the peak weeks the apron may be full. That is why Marrakech produces so many empty legs.
What happens between the aircraft and my riad?
The handler drives you to the business aviation terminal, the police stamp your passport, customs look at the bags, and your car waits at the door. Fifteen minutes later you are at the gate of the Medina, where a porter takes the luggage to the riad.
What does an empty leg to Marrakech cost?
The lowest fares in our table are a Citation M2 from Marrakech to Jersey from about 4,700 GBP and a Citation CJ2 from Marrakech to Southampton from about 5,900 GBP, each for the whole aircraft. Chartered for dates of your own, the same eighteen routes would cost from roughly 11,100 GBP to 34,200 GBP.
Do I need a visa for Morocco?
Not as a British citizen on holiday for up to 90 days. Your passport should be valid for at least three months from arrival, and the police stamp it in the business aviation terminal.
Is Marrakech airport open at night?
Yes. The airport, customs and both business aviation operators work around the clock, so late arrivals and early departures are routine once the permit is in place.
Which currency do I need in Marrakech?
Hotels, riads and larger restaurants take cards, and some prices are quoted in euros, but the souks and taxis work in dirhams. The dirham cannot be bought in Britain in quantity, so draw cash from a machine in the city.
And if nothing is released for my dates?
Give us your ideal dates, the size of the party and the room for manoeuvre on either side. With so many jets flying to Marrakech and back empty from October to May, a suitable sector usually appears within days, and if it does not, we quote a regular charter.

Call +44 7857 574938 , message the same number on WhatsApp , or write to flight@empty-leg.co.uk . Tell us your dates, how many are travelling, what luggage you are taking and the riad, hotel or villa where you are staying. Our reply sets out the matching sectors next to the full charter fare, and a single quote then covers the Moroccan permit, the terminal operator at Menara and the drive to the Medina.
