Empty leg flights to and from Amsterdam

Amsterdam combines a UNESCO listed ring of 17th century canals, the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum with one of Europe's busiest business districts, the Zuidas, and the RAI exhibition centre. Private flights use Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, code AMS, about 9 kilometres south west of the city, where business jets are handled in Schiphol East, mainly by the FBOs Jet Aviation and AviaVIP in the General Aviation Terminal. From London the flight takes about an hour.

Schiphol is also one of the most tightly regulated airports in Europe for private aviation: private flights were cut by almost a third in 2024, the noisiest aircraft types are not accepted and there are no night slots for business jets. We plan every Amsterdam flight around these rules, and when Schiphol is full we look at Rotterdam and Lelystad as well.

Amsterdam sectors available today

The first list shows every sector we currently hold into or out of Schiphol, together with flights released at Rotterdam The Hague and Lelystad, which serve the same region. Below it, the charter table prices each aircraft for a trip on your own dates, so you can see what the empty leg saves.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.

Set up an alert for Amsterdam

Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up between the UK and Amsterdam.

Please fill in both the departure and the arrival city.

Nothing is stored on this site. The button opens a chat with the message already written, and you send it yourself. We reply during office hours, 07:00 to 23:00, and check messages outside them too.

Why Amsterdam releases so many empty legs

The North Sea crossing is one of the shortest international hops from Britain, and at Schiphol a jet rarely waits on the ground for its passengers. Parking is limited and each movement needs a slot, so crews usually drop their party and fly straight back to base, and that empty return is what we offer.

Business and the Zuidas
Banks, law firms and the European headquarters of many international companies sit in the Zuidas and around the airport. Day trips from London, Manchester or Edinburgh leave the aircraft free between the morning drop and the evening pickup.
Trade fairs at the RAI
The RAI hosts large exhibitions all year, including IBC, the broadcasting convention, every September. Exhibitors and visitors arrive in waves, and jets reposition empty before and after each show.
Tulips and King's Day
Keukenhof is open from 18 March to 9 May 2027, and King's Day on 27 April 2027 turns the whole city orange. Spring weekend trips bring a steady flow of one way sectors.
Music and nightlife
The Amsterdam Dance Event fills the clubs every October, and weekend groups travel in and out on Fridays and Sundays, often on different aircraft.
Connections to long haul
Some travellers fly privately to Schiphol to join an intercontinental airline flight, or arrive on one and continue by private jet, so aircraft often leave after a one way transfer.

Empty legs appear all year on the business routes, with extra sectors in spring for the tulip season, in September for the trade fairs and in October for the dance festival. Midweek sectors from London and the northern English cities are the most regular.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in detail

Schiphol opened on 16 September 1916 as a military airfield and now lies about 3 metres below sea level on the reclaimed Haarlemmermeer polder. In 2025 it handled 68.8 million passengers and 477,552 flights, making it the fourth busiest airport in Europe by passengers, and for 2026 the government allows a maximum of 478,000 movements. Business aviation is a small part of this traffic and is handled away from the main terminal, at the General Aviation Terminal on Thermiekstraat in Schiphol East, next to the Oostbaan, the short runway used mainly by general aviation.

Codes AMS (IATA) and EHAM (ICAO)
Location Haarlemmermeer, about 9 kilometres south west of Amsterdam; the private terminal is on the east side of the airport
Runways Six: the Polderbaan of 3,800 metres, the Kaagbaan of 3,500, the Buitenveldertbaan of 3,453, the Aalsmeerbaan of 3,400, the Zwanenburgbaan of 3,300 and the Oostbaan of 2,014
Elevation About 3 metres, or 11 feet, below sea level
Operator Royal Schiphol Group
Slots A fully coordinated airport; every private flight needs a slot from Airport Coordination Netherlands
Private flights Cut from 31 March 2024 to 12,000 a year, down from 17,000; the capacity declarations for winter 2025 to 2026 and summer 2026 set no separate daytime ceiling, but slots remain scarce at peak times
Night No night slots for general aviation in the summer 2026 capacity declaration; night runs from about 23:00 to 07:00 local time
Banned types Dozens of the noisiest aircraft types, about 100 codes in the summer 2026 list, receive no slots at all
Private terminal General Aviation Terminal, Thermiekstraat, Schiphol East, with the FBOs Jet Aviation and AviaVIP
Traffic 68.8 million passengers and 477,552 flights in 2025
Business aircraft The Phenom 300, the Citation XLS and the Citation Latitude were the private types seen most often in 2025
Time zone Central European Time, one hour ahead of London all year

For operators the key facts are the slot and the clock. Every arrival and departure is booked in five minute blocks with the slot coordinator, and a missed slot can mean a long wait for another. With no night slots for business jets, a flight must land and leave during the day, so a late dinner in the city and a return the same night are not possible from Schiphol. Crosswinds and low cloud from the North Sea are common in autumn and winter, and Rotterdam and Lelystad are the usual alternates.

The rules have a political history. In April 2023 Schiphol announced that it wanted to ban private jets altogether, and although the Dutch cabinet decided in September 2023 not to impose a ban, the airport cut the number of private flights by almost a third from 31 March 2024, to 12,000 a year. The current capacity declarations give business jets no night slots and exclude the noisiest types, so booking the slot early matters as much as booking the aircraft.

The General Aviation Terminal at Schiphol East: FBOs, lounges and bags

Private passengers at Schiphol never set foot in the main terminal. The General Aviation Terminal, opened in June 2011, stands on Thermiekstraat on the east side of the airport, beside the apron where business jets park. Designed by VMX Architects, it is clad in silver panels and glass under a magenta canopy on the apron side, and the floor inside is laid with a pattern inspired by Dutch windmills. Jet Aviation and AviaVIP both work from this building.

Jet Aviation Amsterdam
At Thermiekstraat 14, open from 06:00 to 23:00 every day. The FBO has two executive lounges and two crew lounges with workstations, wireless internet, flight planning support and immigration and customs clearance on site. It was formerly the KLM Jet Center.
AviaVIP Amsterdam
Next door at number 16, AviaVIP staffs its desk from 07:00 to 23:00 and can be reached at any hour for handling requests. More than 250 square metres of lounges look out over the ramp, including a large designer passenger lounge with an open bar, a crew lounge with a separate snooze room and a private meeting room.
Security and passport control
Screening, border police and customs for general aviation sit inside the terminal, before the ramp, so passengers go from the lounge to the aircraft without queues. The Netherlands is in Schengen, so arrivals from Britain are checked at the external border, and the EES records four fingerprints and a photograph on your first entry.
Bags and cases
The handling team takes luggage from the car through screening and onto the aircraft, and back again on arrival. Tell us in advance about bicycles, golf bags or large exhibition cases, which may need a midsize jet.
A bite before departure
The FBO lounges serve drinks and snacks, and hot meals are ordered through catering coordination. Close by are a restaurant, Wings, an espresso bar and an Albert Heijn to go supermarket, useful for crews or a quick bite before departure.
Concierge services
Both FBOs arrange hotels, limousines, taxis and hire cars. Jet Aviation also coordinates laundry and prints newspapers on demand from more than 2,200 titles.
Parking and hotels
The terminal has its own parking garage, with the P57 car park close by, and the Steigenberger and Ibis Styles hotels are a short walk away for early departures.
Fuel and aircraft care
Jet A1, sustainable aviation fuel, de icing and aircraft cleaning are available, and AviaVIP provides access to hangar space.
JetSupport at its hangar
A third option is JetSupport, a maintenance company whose 12,500 square metre hangar is a short drive further along Thermiekstraat. Its own business aviation terminal has a lounge and meeting rooms with presentation equipment, and it suits owners whose aircraft is being serviced there.
Guests on KLM and other airlines
Guests booked on KLM or any scheduled carrier check in at the main passenger building instead. The Schiphol VIP Centre there, designed by Marcel Wanders and open from 06:00 to 23:00, offers lounges and meeting spaces by the hour, and its paid VIP service takes airline passengers through check in, security and passport control in private and drives them to the aircraft.
Leaving Amsterdam
Arrive about 20 to 30 minutes before departure. The slot time is fixed, so if you are running late in city traffic, call the FBO at once so the crew can ask for a new slot.

How we plan an Amsterdam flight

  • Slots first. Both slots go in to the coordinator the moment an aircraft is picked, because the peak hours leave little spare room.
  • Quiet aircraft. We check that the aircraft type is not on the banned list and falls in a favourable noise category.
  • Daytime only. We plan the return well before 23:00, or position the aircraft to Rotterdam if the day runs late.
  • The FBO. We choose Jet Aviation, AviaVIP or JetSupport to suit the hours, lounge and services you need.
  • Ground transport. Drivers to the Zuidas, the canal ring or The Hague are booked with the flight.

Four things to know before booking Amsterdam

We settle all four at the quote stage.

Slots are limited
Every movement needs a slot, and the morning and evening peaks fill first, so book as early as your plans allow.
No flights at night
Business jets receive no night slots, so the last departure must be planned well before 23:00.
Noisy jets are refused
Older and louder aircraft types get no slots at all, which rules out some vintage jets and affects the choice of aircraft.
Rotterdam as a backup
Rotterdam The Hague Airport is about an hour's drive from the city and is often easier for slots, but under draft rules due by April 2027 it would close at night to all but a few private flights.

From the airport to Amsterdam, The Hague and the coast

Schiphol East is outside the passenger terminal, so private passengers travel by car rather than by train. Journey times in the table assume light traffic; on the A4 and the A10 ring road during commuting hours, allow up to twice as long.

Destination By car from the private terminal What is there
Zuidas business district About 15 minutes Banks, law firms and the World Trade Center
RAI Amsterdam About 20 minutes The exhibition and congress centre
Canal ring and Dam Square About 25 minutes The historic centre, luxury hotels and the museums
Haarlem About 25 minutes An old town with museums and shops
Keukenhof and the bulb fields About 25 minutes The tulip gardens at Lisse, open in spring
Zandvoort About 30 minutes The beach and the motor racing circuit
Utrecht About 35 minutes Canals, the university and business parks
The Hague About 40 minutes The government, embassies and international courts
Rotterdam About 50 minutes The port and modern architecture

A helicopter can reach Rotterdam, The Hague or the northern provinces in minutes where landing sites are available, and a boat on the canals makes a memorable arrival at a hotel in the old centre.

What else you pay on an Amsterdam trip

Apart from the aircraft, the main extras are passenger taxes in both countries, the FBO handling fee and Schiphol's airport charges.

Band A
the UK Air Passenger Duty band for Amsterdam, which lies within 2,000 miles of London, payable on jets of 5.7 tonnes or more
30.25 euros
Dutch air passenger tax per passenger leaving a Dutch airport in 2026, on aircraft with a maximum weight above 4,000 kilograms
Handling
charged by the handling agent for the terminal, the lounge, security, the formalities and the bags
Noise categories
Schiphol's charges rise for louder aircraft and for flights at the edges of the day

British Air Passenger Duty is due on the flight out of the UK. A light or midsize jet between 5.7 and 20 tonnes attracts 32 GBP a head in Band A, and anything heavier 142 GBP, up to the end of March 2027; after that a flat 146.63 GBP a head applies to all private jets of 5.7 tonnes and over. A very light jet such as the Citation M2 falls below the threshold and pays nothing, Jersey and Guernsey sit outside the duty, and Scotland switches to a separate tax in April 2027. On the flight home the Dutch passenger tax of 30.25 euros applies. From 2027 the Dutch tax moves to distance bands, and the Dutch parliament has passed a separate private jet tax from 2030 for aircraft with 19 seats or fewer, starting at 420 euros a passenger for flights up to 2,000 kilometres.

Rotterdam, Lelystad and the other airports near Amsterdam

Schiphol is the natural gateway to Amsterdam, but when its slots are full or the day runs late, these airports can take the flight instead.

Amsterdam Schiphol, EHAM. The main airport, 9 kilometres from the city, with six runways, two FBOs in the General Aviation Terminal and daytime operations for business jets.
Rotterdam The Hague, EHRD. About 60 kilometres to the south west, with a 2,199 metre runway and a Jet Aviation FBO, convenient for The Hague and Rotterdam. Under draft airport rules due by April 2027 it would close from 23:00 to 07:00, with at most 20 private flights a year allowed at night.
Lelystad, EHLE. About 45 kilometres to the east, 40 to 45 minutes by car, with a runway of 2,700 metres. It is the busiest general aviation airport in the Netherlands, and airline flights are planned from October 2027, subject to a nature permit.

Popular routes from the UK and Ireland to Amsterdam, and which way they run empty

The prices below cover a whole aircraft that has to reposition in any case; seats are never sold one by one. Times are for the flight alone. Amsterdam is so close to Britain that most routes use light jets such as the Citation M2, CJ2 or Phenom 300, with a Citation XLS+, Latitude or Challenger 350 when more cabin space is needed. The charter table under the live list gives the full price for trips on fixed dates.

Liverpool to Amsterdam 1h 10m 2,200 GBP All year Out to collect a party at the end of a stay

Sectors cluster on Monday mornings and Friday evenings for business travel, and on Thursdays and Sundays for weekend breaks. Because slots at Schiphol are tight, an empty leg with a confirmed slot is worth booking quickly.

Border and customs rules for the Netherlands

A flight from Britain to Amsterdam crosses the external border of the EU and the Schengen area, and Dutch border police and customs check passengers in the FBO. These are the rules that come up most often.

  • Passport. Dutch officers look at two dates: issue within the past decade, and expiry at least three months beyond your planned exit from Schengen.
  • Visa free stays. Days spent anywhere in Schengen in the previous 180 count towards the 90 day limit, which covers the Netherlands too.
  • EES. On the first entry, four fingerprints and a facial image are recorded; for children under 12 only the image.
  • Allowances. Duty free limits per adult coming in from Britain: a litre of spirits or two of fortified or sparkling wine, four litres of table wine, sixteen of beer, a carton of 200 cigarettes and 430 euros of other goods by air.
  • Food. A cheese or ham sandwich from home is confiscated, as British meat and dairy products are barred at the EU border.
  • Cash. Amounts of 10,000 euros or more must be declared on entry and exit.
  • Cannabis. What is sold in Amsterdam coffee shops may not be taken out of the Netherlands, and carrying it into Britain is a criminal offence.
  • Returning to Britain. On landing in Britain the duty free limits per adult are 270 GBP of goods, 18 litres of wine, 42 of beer, 4 of spirits and 200 cigarettes, and from 1 October 2026 fizz and cider come under the wine and beer headings.

Three situations, three answers

A day of meetings in the Zuidas
Wheels up from London at 08:00 puts you on the Schiphol apron at 10:00 local time, with the Zuidas a quarter of an hour away by car. Take off again in the late afternoon, well before the evening peak, and be home for dinner. The morning drop often creates an empty return we can sell.
A spring weekend
Fly in on the Saturday before King's Day, visit Keukenhof on Sunday and stay on to join the orange crowds on the canals on Tuesday 27 April 2027. Book the slot early, as the spring weekends are among the busiest of the year.
A connection to a long haul flight
Arrive by private jet at Schiphol East and transfer by car to the main terminal for an intercontinental flight with KLM or another airline. Allow extra time for the transfer and for check in on the airline side.

Bringing a pet to Amsterdam

The animal is chipped first and vaccinated against rabies at least three weeks before departure; an official vet signs the health certificate in the last ten days before you reach the EU. The FBO presents the animal to Dutch customs on arrival, and one person may travel with up to five pets.

Dog in the cabin of a private jet to Amsterdam

Returning to Britain, a dog must be treated against tapeworm by a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival, since the Netherlands is not on the exempt list, and only operators approved to carry pets into Britain can be used. We check with the operator whether the pet can travel in the cabin and go over the paperwork with you in advance.

Flying privately to Amsterdam: common questions

Which Dutch airport suits a private flight to Amsterdam?
Schiphol, code AMS, with its private terminal on the east side of the field. Rotterdam The Hague and Lelystad are the alternatives.
How long is the flight from the UK and Ireland?
About 55 minutes from Biggin Hill, 1h 00m to 1h 10m from London, Farnborough, Oxford, Southampton, Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle and Bristol, 1h 15m from Cardiff and Jersey, and 1h 25m to 1h 30m from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Belfast and Dublin.
Can a private jet land at Schiphol at night?
No. The slot coordinator allocates no night slots to business aviation, so flights must land before about 23:00 and depart before about 22:40.
Is Schiphol banning private jets?
Not at present. The airport announced a plan to ban them in 2023, but the cabinet decided against a ban. Instead the airport cut private flights by almost a third from 31 March 2024, and it still refuses the noisiest types and gives business jets no night slots.
What does an empty leg to Amsterdam cost?
The cheapest sectors in our list start at about 2,200 GBP for a Citation M2, on routes such as Bristol, Liverpool, Leeds and Jersey, for the whole aircraft. Booked as a normal charter on dates of your choice, those eighteen journeys would be priced from around 5,300 GBP up to 14,800 GBP.
What taxes apply?
UK Air Passenger Duty on the flight out, from 32 GBP a passenger in a jet of 5.7 tonnes or more, and the Dutch passenger tax of 30.25 euros a passenger on the flight home in 2026.
How far is the city centre by car?
By car from Schiphol East: about 25 minutes to the canal ring and 15 minutes to the Zuidas outside the rush hour. We book the driver with the flight.
Can we fly to Rotterdam instead?
Yes. Rotterdam The Hague Airport has a Jet Aviation FBO and is often easier for slots, and it is about an hour by car from Amsterdam, but it too has strict night rules.
Can a dog come with us to Amsterdam?
Yes. Once chipped, vaccinated and certified, a dog can travel with you, and a vet's tapeworm treatment is needed before the flight back to Britain.
Do we need a visa for the Netherlands?
No. A holiday or business trip needs no visa, up to the Schengen limit of three months in any six.
And if nothing is released for my dates?
Say when you want to travel, how many are going and what the trip is for, whether meetings, a trade fair or a weekend in the city. With aircraft crossing the North Sea daily, something suitable is usually released within the week.

Call +44 7857 574938 , message the same number on WhatsApp , or write to flight@empty-leg.co.uk . Give us the dates, the group size, the bags and your address in the city or the Zuidas. You will get the matching sectors alongside their charter equivalents, with slots, FBO and driver already worked out.
