Empty leg flights to and from Florence

Florence packs more of the Renaissance into a walk than most cities hold in total: Brunelleschi's dome, the Uffizi, the Ponte Vecchio and Michelangelo's David, all within a few streets of the Arno. Beyond the city lie the vineyards of Chianti, the towers of San Gimignano, Siena and the villas of the Tuscan hills, and the calendar brings the Pitti Uomo fashion fairs in January and June, the historic football of San Giovanni in June and the grape harvest in the autumn. Tuscan clocks run one hour ahead of London's, and the hop from the Thames to the Arno lasts just over two hours in a light jet.

For private flights, Florence means Amerigo Vespucci Airport at Peretola, code FLR, a few kilometres north west of the historic centre, one of the closest airports to any great European city. It is also one of the most demanding: a short runway, landings from one direction only and strict rules on parking and night flights.

Florence sectors available today

Our first list shows the sectors currently held into or out of Florence, and it also includes those released at Pisa, Bologna and Siena, the airports that take over when Peretola is full or a jet is too large for its runway. The second list prices each aircraft as a charter on dates you choose yourself.

Ask us what is available at Florence right now.

This board refreshes through the day as operators release sectors, and it shows only part of the market: a large share of repositioning flights never reach a public list at all. Check back shortly, or tell us your route and dates and we will look at what operators are holding at this moment.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.

Set up an alert for Florence

Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up between the UK and Florence.

Please fill in both the departure and the arrival city.

Why Florence produces so many empty legs

Florence combines a world famous destination with an airport that has little space for visiting aircraft, and the gap between the two is filled by positioning flights with nobody on board.

A stay of a day at most
In summer Florence accepts visiting business jets for 24 hours at most, and often for a quick turn only. A jet that brings guests for a week in Tuscany leaves soon after the drop and comes back empty for the collection.
A short runway
With about 1,560 metres of runway and landings allowed from one direction only, Florence suits light and midsize jets. Larger aircraft land at Pisa or Bologna instead, and every change of airport creates another positioning flight.
Villas, vineyards and weddings
Tuscan villas are rented by the week, and weddings in castles and wine estates bring groups who arrive together and leave on different days. Each arrival and departure leaves an aircraft flying somewhere without passengers.
Fashion and business
The Pitti Uomo fairs in January and June and the fashion houses around Florence bring buyers and executives who fly in for a day or two, often with the jet leaving empty while they work.
A busy small airport
Florence handled about 3.8 million passengers in 2025, a record and 9.4 per cent more than in 2024, on a site hemmed in by the city and the motorway.

Florence releases sectors in every season, though spring, summer, early autumn and the two Pitti weeks bring the largest number. Because a visiting jet can stay a day at most, operators often release the flight home within hours of the drop.

Florence Amerigo Vespucci Airport in detail

The airport at Peretola opened on 4 June 1931 and took the name of the Florentine navigator Amerigo Vespucci in 1990. Since 2015 it has been run by Toscana Aeroporti, the company formed by merging the operators of Florence and Pisa. Its runway was resurfaced in full in 2006. A new runway of 2,200 metres, running almost parallel to the motorway, received its Italian environmental approval in November 2025 as part of a masterplan to 2035, and a further decree in 2026 reduced the European Commission's role to a notification, but the project still faces appeals from neighbouring towns before the administrative court. Tram line T2 links the terminal with Santa Maria Novella station in about 20 minutes.

Codes FLR (IATA) and LIRQ (ICAO)
Location Peretola, a few kilometres north west of the centre of Florence, beside the A11 motorway
Runway A single asphalt runway, 05/23, of about 1,560 metres by 45 metres
Landing direction Landings on runway 05 only, with about 1,455 metres available; landings on runway 23 are limited to local light aircraft in daylight and good weather, and take offs are normally made on runway 23 towards the south west
Elevation 43 metres, or 142 feet, above sea level
Operator Toscana Aeroporti, which also runs Pisa
Night rules Since 31 March 2024 no take offs after 23:00; scheduled landings end at 23:00, and no landing is allowed after 00:15
Parking Summer stays of 24 hours at most for visiting business jets, often quick turns only
Permission PPR required, accepted from 15 days to 24 hours before arrival
Handlers Signature, Italy FBO and AviaVIP, each with its own lounge
Traffic About 3.8 million passengers in 2025, a record for the airport
Business aircraft The Citation XLS, the Phenom 300 and the Pilatus PC-12 were the types seen most often in 2025

For crews, Florence is a precise airport. Monte Morello rises to the north east of the field, so every landing by a visiting aircraft is made on runway 05 and a strong tailwind on final forces a go around or a diversion to Pisa or Bologna. The runway length and the weather decide how much an aircraft can carry, which is why operators send light and midsize jets such as the Phenom 300, the Citation XLS or the Legacy 500 to Florence and keep larger aircraft for Pisa. Add the 24 hour limit on the ground, the PPR window and the 23:00 cut off, and a Florence trip nearly always involves careful timing and at least one empty positioning flight.

Private jet cabin on a flight to Florence

The private terminal, the handlers and their lounges

Business aircraft at Peretola are handled on Via del Termine, on the opposite side of the site from the airline terminal. Italy FBO and AviaVIP work from the general aviation terminal at number 11, Signature from its own private terminal on the same road, and each has a lounge where your driver can collect you.

Signature at Peretola
Signature Aviation works from Via del Termine on the edge of the airport, with a private terminal, a crew lounge, fuel, customs and immigration assistance, offices, ramp services and hangar space when it is available. Its staff are on duty from 08:00 to 20:00, with call outs on request, and cars from its partner Sixt can wait at the terminal.
AviaVIP Florence
AviaVIP runs a VIP lounge on the same road with wireless internet, computers and a printer, a crew room, a prayer room and round the clock surveillance. Customs and immigration are handled on site, cars can be left in short or long term parking, animals are welcome, and the team works from 08:00 to 20:00 local time.
Italy FBO
Italy FBO, the brand under which Corporate Air Service operates at Florence, works inside the general aviation terminal with an exclusive VIP lounge and a lounge for crews, supplies Jet A1 and is staffed from 08:00 to 20:00, with later hours on request. It is one of the three handlers that look after most private flights into Florence.
Refreshments, not a restaurant
The general aviation terminal has lounges rather than a restaurant. They serve drinks and light refreshments, and anything more, from a plate of Tuscan cured meats to a full meal for the flight, is ordered in advance through the handler. The restaurants of the city are twenty minutes away.
The VIP Club Lounge for airline departures
If anyone in your party flies home on an airline, the airport's VIP Club Lounge, long known as the Masaccio lounge, sits on the first floor of the departure terminal. It offers snacks, soft drinks, wine, beer and spirits, wireless internet, computer workstations, newspapers in several languages, meeting rooms and a family room, though no showers. Entry is by day pass, by lounge card or with elite status on many airlines, British Airways among them.
Parking the jet
Stands for visiting aircraft are few, and in summer a stay of 24 hours is the maximum. Remote parking for aircraft up to the size of a Gulfstream G550 is sometimes available, but it cannot be assumed, so the plan for the aircraft is made with the booking.
A new runway, one day
Toscana Aeroporti plans a new runway of 2,200 metres that would allow landings in more wind conditions and by larger aircraft. It won Italian environmental approval in November 2025, but the remaining approvals and the appeals of neighbouring towns mean the present runway and apron will set the limits for private flights for some years yet.

It is normally the operator who chooses the handler, though we can ask for a particular lounge if you prefer one.

From the aircraft to your hotel or villa, step by step

Peretola is small, so the distance from the steps to your car is a short drive across the apron; here is the sequence for an arrival, which simply runs backwards when you leave.

ON THE APRON
A short drive to the lounge
The handler meets the aircraft and drives you to its terminal on Via del Termine, a minute or two away, while the bags follow.
THE BORDER
Passports for Schengen
A flight from Britain arrives from outside Schengen, so Italian police check each passport at the handler's terminal. Your first entry since the EU's biometric register began needs a face image for each person and fingerprints from anyone over eleven.
LUGGAGE
Straight to the car
There is no baggage hall and no belt: the handler takes the bags from the hold through customs in the general aviation terminal to your car, and on departure from the car through the security check to the aircraft. Declare golf bags and cases of wine when you book, because the hold of a light or midsize jet is small, and wine bought in Chianti is often better shipped home.
THE CAR
Into the centre in twenty minutes
Your driver waits at the handler's door. The historic centre is a limited traffic zone, so the handler or the hotel registers the car's number plate in advance to avoid a fine.
THE LOUNGES
A short wait
Most private passengers pass straight through, but the lounges of Signature, AviaVIP and Italy FBO offer a seat, drinks and wireless internet while the aircraft is prepared.
FOOD
Panini or a Tuscan menu
A day's notice lets the handler load panini, salads or a full Tuscan menu for the flight home. The trattorie of the Oltrarno and the wine bars of the centre are better kept for the stay.
WHEN TO ARRIVE
Before 23:00
For the flight home, arrive about 30 minutes before departure, and remember that no aircraft may take off from Florence after 23:00, so dinner in Chianti needs a sensible end.
TAX FREE
VAT back on leather and gold
Visitors living outside the EU can reclaim Italian VAT on larger purchases from the leather shops of Santa Croce or the jewellers of the Ponte Vecchio, once customs stamp the export at the airport. Warn the handler the day before.
AIRLINE ONE WAY
British Airways to London
If the private flight covers only one direction, British Airways links Florence with London City, Heathrow and Stansted, and from Pisa easyJet, Ryanair and Jet2 serve many British airports.

The real constraint at Florence is the aircraft, not the passengers. The PPR, the 24 hour limit and, for a larger jet, the choice between Florence and Pisa are settled at the time of booking.

Five things to know before booking Florence

A Florence quote is only reliable once the following five questions are settled, so we answer them in writing before you confirm.

Size matters here
The short runway and the single landing direction mean that Florence is best for light and midsize jets. For a Challenger, a Falcon or anything larger, Pisa or Bologna is usually the realistic airport.
A day on the ground at most
Parking time is the scarcest resource at Peretola, and a week in Tuscany therefore means two separate flights.
PPR between 15 days and 24 hours
Permission to use a stand can be requested no earlier than 15 days and no later than 24 hours before arrival, and summer stands go quickly.
No departures after 23:00
Since 2024 the airport has enforced a strict 23:00 limit on take offs, and landings end by 00:15 at the latest, so late flights need a margin.
Italian tax by distance
Italy charges each passenger of a private charter 100 euros per flight from the south of England, the Midlands, Cardiff and Jersey, and 200 euros from the north of England, Scotland, Belfast and Dublin, because those routes pass the 1,500 kilometre mark once 95 kilometres are added.

From Peretola to the city and the Tuscan hills

Peretola is so close to the centre that the drive is shorter than many transfers within London. Estimates are for a chauffeured car leaving Via del Termine at a quiet hour.

Destination From Peretola What is there
Santa Maria Novella and the Duomo About 20 minutes The cathedral, the Baptistery and the hotels of the centre
The Arno and the Uffizi About 20 to 25 minutes The Ponte Vecchio, the gallery and the riverside hotels
Oltrarno and Piazzale Michelangelo About 25 to 30 minutes The Pitti Palace, the Boboli Gardens and the view over the city
Fiesole About 30 minutes The hill town above Florence and its villa hotels
Chianti, Greve and Panzano About 45 minutes to 1 hour Vineyards, wine estates and villas to rent by the week
San Gimignano About 1 hour The medieval towers and the Vernaccia vineyards
Siena About 1h 15m The Campo, the Palio in July and August and the cathedral
Pisa Galileo Galilei airport About 1 hour The larger airport of Tuscany and the Leaning Tower
Forte dei Marmi About 1h 15m The beach resort of the Tuscan riviera
Val d'Orcia and Montalcino About 1h 45m to 2 hours Brunello vineyards, cypress hills and spa villages

Tram line T2 runs from the airport to Santa Maria Novella in about twenty minutes, but after a private flight a car booked by the handler is simpler, and high speed trains from Santa Maria Novella reach Rome in about an hour and a half and Milan in about two hours.

Taxes and charges on a Florence trip

Beyond the aircraft, a Florence trip carries British duty on the way out, the Italian passenger tax in both directions and the city tax on hotel nights.

UK duty
Air Passenger Duty on the flight out of Britain, Band A, for jets of 5.7 tonnes or more
Italian passenger tax
100 euros a passenger a flight from the south of England, the Midlands, Cardiff and Jersey, 200 euros from further north
City tax in Florence
8 euros a person a night in a five star hotel in 2026, for up to seven nights, with children under 12 exempt
Airport and handling
landing, parking and handling fees are paid by the operator and included in its price

The Italian tax falls on private charters in aircraft of up to nineteen seats and is collected by the operator. To the shortest distance between the two airports the law adds 95 kilometres; if the result is 1,500 kilometres or less the tax is 100 euros a passenger, and above that 200 euros. From London, Farnborough, Biggin Hill, Oxford, Southampton, Bristol, Birmingham, Cardiff and Jersey the lower rate applies, and from Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle, Scotland, Belfast and Dublin the higher one. A leg flown empty pays nothing, but an empty leg you buy is a passenger flight and pays in full.

For the UK leg, APD is levied on departure only and Italy sits in the lowest band, A. Up to 31 March 2027 a private jet between 5.7 and 20 tonnes pays 32 GBP a passenger and a heavier one 142 GBP, and from 1 April 2027 all private jets from 5.7 tonnes pay 146.63 GBP. Jets under the 5.7 tonne line and anything departing Jersey or Guernsey are outside the duty, while departures from Scotland move to the Scottish government's own tax in April 2027.

Pisa, Bologna and the other airports for Tuscany

Florence is the obvious airport for the city, but its runway and apron make the other airports of central Italy part of many plans, especially for larger jets and longer stays.

Florence Peretola, LIRQ. The closest airport to the city, with a runway of about 1,560 metres, landings from the south west only, stays of up to 24 hours in summer and no departures after 23:00.
Pisa Galileo Galilei, LIRP. About an hour west by road, with two long runways shared with the Italian Air Force, room for large jets and stays of up to 72 hours when stands are free; it is open from 04:00 to 20:55 UTC without extensions.
Bologna Guglielmo Marconi, LIPE. About an hour and a quarter north by road or 37 minutes by high speed train, with a runway of 2,800 metres and the best chance of longer parking, except around MotoGP weekends and other big events.
Siena Ampugnano, LIQS. A small airfield normally limited to light aircraft on EU and Schengen flights, with customs only on request, so rarely practical for a flight from Britain.
Rome Ciampino, LIRA. About three hours by road but less than an hour by jet, a base for aircraft that must wait several days between a drop and a collection.

Popular routes between the UK and Florence, and which way they run empty

One price buys the whole cabin on a repositioning flight, so the cost does not change with the number of passengers, and each duration is wheels up to wheels down. Florence is about 1,200 kilometres from London, and because of the short runway every jet in our list is a light or midsize type, from a Citation M2 on the Oxford and Jersey routes to a Citation Latitude or a Legacy 500 for larger parties. The Italian tax is added for each passenger. Anyone tied to fixed dates can compare with the ordinary charter figures in the second list higher up.

Sectors between Britain and Florence cluster around Thursday, Friday and Sunday, when long weekends begin and end, and on Saturdays in summer, when villas change guests. With parking limited to a day, flights from Florence back to Britain are released most often, frequently at a few hours' notice.

Arriving in Italy at Florence: passports and customs

Britain is outside the EU and Schengen, so every private flight into Florence crosses an external border, and Italian police and customs clear it at the handler's terminal.

  • Passport. Italy checks that the passport is less than ten years old at entry and that three months of validity remain after your last day in Schengen.
  • Length of stay. No visa is needed for up to 90 days within any 180, and time spent in France, Spain or any other Schengen country on the same trip counts too.
  • Entry/Exit System. The electronic register replaced passport stamps for British travellers in April 2026; at the first entry the police take a photograph and, from the age of twelve, fingerprints.
  • ETIAS. The online permit announced by the EU is still on hold, with no launch date fixed; once live it should cost 20 euros for three years.
  • Customs. Italy's duty free limits for an adult arriving from Britain are 200 cigarettes, a litre of spirits or two of fortified or sparkling wine, 4 litres of still wine and 16 of beer, plus 430 euros of other goods. Cash from 10,000 euros upwards must go on a declaration.
  • Food. Meat and dairy products cannot be carried from Britain into the EU, so leave the picnic behind; Tuscany will provide.
  • Back to Britain. A private flight home lets each adult carry in, duty free, up to 18 litres of still wine, a welcome figure after Chianti, together with 42 litres of beer, 4 litres of spirits or 9 of fortified wine, 200 cigarettes and 270 GBP of other goods; from 1 October 2026 sparkling wine is counted inside the wine limit and cider inside the beer limit.

Three situations, three answers

A week in a Chianti villa
Land at Peretola in a light or midsize jet and drive under an hour to the villa. With a day's parking at most, the trip is sold as two single flights, and the repositioning sectors around your week are the ones to catch.
Two days at Pitti Uomo
Buyers who fly in for the fair may be able to keep the jet at Florence for a single night, within the 24 hour limit, if the PPR is filed early. Otherwise the aircraft repositions and returns, and those flights are sold as empty legs.
A wedding for a large party
If the group needs a Challenger or a larger jet, land at Pisa and drive an hour, or split the party between Florence and Pisa. The smaller aircraft reach Peretola, and the others benefit from Pisa's longer runway and apron.

Flying to Florence with a dog or a cat

Pets travelling from Britain to Italy need a microchip, a rabies vaccination given at least 21 days before departure and an animal health certificate signed by an official vet no more than ten days before arrival; an EU pet passport issued to a British resident has not been accepted since April 2026. Italy does not require tapeworm treatment on arrival. AviaVIP at Florence welcomes animals, and the handler should be told in advance so that the check at the terminal is ready.

Dog in the cabin of a private jet to Florence

The flight home needs more planning. For the return, the operator needs British approval to carry animals, and a dog's tapeworm dose must be given by a vet between 24 and 120 hours before touchdown in Britain. Any vet in Florence can do it; set the date together with the flight, and mention the animal in your first message so that we only quote operators with pet approval.

Private flights to Florence: your questions answered

Florence or Pisa for a private flight?
Florence for light and midsize jets, the city itself and the Chianti hills. Pisa for larger jets, for stays of more than a day and when Peretola has no stand free; it is about an hour from Florence by road.
How long is the flight to Florence?
About 2h 05m from London, Farnborough, Biggin Hill and Jersey, 2h 10m to 2h 25m from Oxford, Southampton, Bristol, Birmingham, Cardiff, Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool, and 2h 35m to 2h 50m from Newcastle, Dublin, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Belfast.
Can every jet land at Florence?
No. The runway of about 1,560 metres and the single landing direction suit light and midsize jets; larger aircraft normally use Pisa or Bologna, and even smaller jets may divert in a strong tailwind.
Can the aircraft wait for me in Florence?
Only briefly. In summer a visiting jet may stay 24 hours at most, and often only for a quick turn, so for a longer stay the aircraft leaves and returns, and those flights become empty legs.
What does an empty leg to Florence cost?
Our cheapest lines are both flown by a Citation M2: Florence to Jersey from around 3,600 GBP and Oxford to Florence from around 3,700 GBP for the entire jet. Booked instead as ordinary charters on dates of your choice, the same eighteen routes run from roughly 8,500 GBP up to 23,500 GBP.
What does the Italian passenger tax add?
From London and the south, the Midlands, Cardiff or Jersey each traveller pays 100 euros per leg; from Manchester northwards, Belfast or Dublin the charge doubles.
Can I fly out of Florence late at night?
No. Take offs stop at 23:00, and landings end by 00:15 at the latest, so evening departures need a margin.
Do I need a visa for Italy?
No. British passport holders stay up to 90 days in any 180 without a visa, for holidays or business, and there is no advance permit to apply for yet.
And if nothing is released for my dates?
Tell us roughly when, for how many and whether the days can shift. Jets leave Peretola empty after almost every drop, so something suitable often surfaces quickly, and failing that we price a charter into Florence or Pisa.

Call +44 7857 574938 , message the same number on WhatsApp , or write to flight@empty-leg.co.uk . Include when you want to fly, how many are travelling, the bags and the address in Florence or the hills. The answer lists the matching sectors beside the charter price, and a single quote takes care of the PPR, the handling at Peretola, the Italian passenger tax and the drive to your door.
