Ireland is a short hop from almost anywhere in Britain and the last stop in Europe before the Atlantic, and both facts shape its private flying. Dublin carries a steady business shuttle to London and the continent, Shannon handles transatlantic jets that clear United States border control before they leave, and the south west fills with golf groups from April to October.
In September 2027 the Ryder Cup comes to Adare Manor, a short drive from Shannon, and Shannon Airport's management is already describing that week as a very tight logistical operation. Airports, private terminals, customs since Brexit and the sources of empty legs differ more across the country than its size suggests. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom and has a guide of its own, for Belfast.

The board below lists every sector our operator network has released that starts or ends at an Irish airport: Dublin, Shannon and Cork, and also Kerry, Knock and the smaller fields, which are easy to miss on a general search.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.
Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up in Ireland.

Most of the repositioning flights to and from Ireland come from four sources, and they peak at different times of year.
Six airports carry nearly all private flying in the Republic. Choose by where you are going and by what the aircraft needs, because the runways, the opening hours and the customs arrangements differ more than the map suggests.
| Airport | Runway | Best for | Private handling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dublin, DUB / EIDW | 3,110 m, plus two shorter runways | The city, the business district, Portmarnock, the K Club and Kildare racing | A slot for every movement and a general aviation apron for 10 to 15 aircraft. Closed from 23:00 on 24 December to 06:00 on 26 December |
| Shannon, SNN / EINN | 3,199 m | Adare Manor, Lahinch, Doonbeg, Dromoland and the Atlantic crossing | Open 24 hours with no slots and no prior permission. Signature, Universal and Westair, and US preclearance |
| Cork, ORK / EICK | 2,133 m | Kinsale, the Old Head and West Cork | Weston Aviation, open 24 hours with a VIP lounge. The hilltop site is prone to fog and low cloud |
| Kerry, KIR / EIKY | 2,000 m | Killarney, Ballybunion, Tralee and Waterville | Kerry Executive Handling, with an executive lounge. Hours are published by NOTAM, and fire cover for larger jets needs 24 hours of notice |
| Ireland West Knock, NOC / EIKN | 2,340 m | Mayo, Connemara and Ashford Castle | A VIP lounge and private meeting areas, on high ground at 203 m. Customs from Britain is arranged in advance |
| Weston, EIWT | 924 m, with a stopway | The K Club, the Curragh and Punchestown | An executive airport 15 km west of Dublin with lounges and a restaurant, but the short runway limits it to light aircraft and helicopters |
One rule matters more since Brexit. Britain is outside the EU customs area, so a private flight from a British airport normally lands at Dublin, Shannon or Cork, which are the customs airports for traffic from outside the EU. Kerry, Knock and the smaller fields can take it only with approval from Irish customs arranged ahead of the flight. Galway, which older guides still list, has had no scheduled service since 2011 and is now used by a flying club.

The differences between Irish airports are large, and 2026 changed two of them: Dublin built a shorter route between its private apron and the terminal, and Shannon moved private passengers into its main security hall. This is what each airport is like from the passenger side.
Flying private in Ireland is quick at every airport, but the details depend on which one you use and where you are flying from.

Shannon was the first airport in Europe to offer United States preclearance to private aircraft, and in Ireland it is still the only one. Immigration, customs and agriculture checks are done before departure, so the jet lands in America as a domestic flight at any of about two hundred approved airports. Dublin offers preclearance to airline passengers only.
| Hours | 07:00 to 15:00 from May to September and 09:00 to 17:00 from October to April, with extra time until 21:00 at a charge. Weekend requests go in by 15:00 on the Friday |
| Notice | At least 24 hours, with 48 recommended, together with the passenger details US border control asks for |
| Cost | Around 300 euros for a typical private flight, more outside the standard hours |
| Time on the ground | Forty five minutes to an hour, fuel included |
| Passengers and bags | Groups of up to 20 use the private aviation facility and larger ones the commercial hall. Everyone is screened in the main terminal first, and every bag is taken off the aircraft and shown to US officers |
| ESTA travellers | May preclear only on an operator that has signed the Visa Waiver agreement |
| After clearance | The aircraft must fly to the US airport named in the clearance. A diversion for any reason, weather included, cancels it |
For an empty leg this matters twice. A jet going home to the United States after a European trip often stops at Shannon anyway, and a sector from Shannon to New York or Boston arrives without a queue at the other end.
The names that bring private jets to Ireland are spread along the west coast and around Dublin, and each has an airport that suits it better than the others. Times are typical by car.
| Destination | Nearest runway | By car | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adare Manor | Shannon | 30 to 40 min | The Ryder Cup venue in 2027. Its helipad needs prior permission and lies 7.5 nautical miles from Shannon |
| Dromoland Castle | Shannon | about 15 min | Eight miles from the terminal, which makes it the natural base for a Shannon arrival |
| Lahinch and Doonbeg | Shannon | about an hour | The links of the Clare coast, an easy run west |
| Ballybunion | Kerry | about 50 min | Also reachable from Shannon, but the drive is longer |
| Tralee | Kerry | about 35 min | On the coast north west of the town |
| Waterville | Kerry | about 1h 30 min | Or about forty minutes by helicopter from Shannon |
| Old Head of Kinsale | Cork | about 35 min | Or about forty minutes by helicopter from Shannon |
| Portmarnock | Dublin | about 15 min | About ten kilometres from the airport, close enough for a round between flights |
| The K Club | Weston or Dublin | 15 min from Weston, 40 from Dublin | Host of the Irish Open on 1 to 4 July 2027, and of the Ryder Cup in 2006 |
| The European Club | Dublin | about an hour | South along the Wicklow coast |
| Ashford Castle | Knock | about an hour | Or about twenty five minutes by helicopter from Shannon |
| Leopardstown | Dublin | about 30 min | The Dublin Racing Festival in February and the Christmas meeting in December |
| The Curragh and Punchestown | Weston or Dublin | about 30 min from Weston, 45 from Dublin | The Irish Derby, the Irish Champions Festival and the Punchestown Festival |
| Galway Races | Shannon or Knock | about 1h 10 min | The summer festival at Ballybrit, late July into August |
For several of these in one trip, a helicopter changes the arithmetic. Shannon to Ashford Castle takes about twenty five minutes against an hour and three quarters by road, Shannon to Waterville about forty against three hours, and Dublin to Adare Manor about fifty against nearly two and a half. Golf helicopters in Ireland book up early, and a year ahead is not unusual for the summer.

Ireland charges no departure tax at all, and the costs that catch people out are about time and parking rather than duty.
Positioning decides the rest. Irish operators such as Westair keep jets at Shannon, and a large American fractional operator has set up an Irish operation with a Dublin based team, so a charter from either airport can often be priced without a long empty flight in front of it. Kerry, Knock and Cork usually need an aircraft brought in first, and that is exactly the flight an empty leg removes.
Ireland is small on the map and slow on the road once you leave the motorways, which is why short private flights inside the country make more sense than they appear to.
| Journey | By air | By road |
|---|---|---|
| Shannon to Kerry | 20 min | About an hour and three quarters |
| Dublin to Knock | 35 min | About two and a half hours |
| Dublin to Shannon | 40 min | About two and a half hours |
| Dublin to Cork | 40 min | About two and three quarter hours |
| Dublin to Kerry | 45 min | About three and a half hours |
On a golf week in the south west that difference adds up quickly. Arriving at Kerry rather than Dublin saves about three and a half hours on the road at each end, and the aircraft that flew you there becomes an empty leg the moment you step off it.

These routes are listed from the Irish airport where each one starts most often. Every amount is a guide for the entire aircraft on a flight that is repositioning anyway, and the charter price list for Ireland gives the aircraft type and the full fare for the same route.
| Route | Flight time | Empty leg from | Peak | Which direction runs empty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dublin to Belfast | 0h 30m | 1,800 GBP | All year | Both. A short cross border hop, often flown only to reposition |
| Dublin to the Isle of Man | 0h 35m | 1,800 GBP | May to September | Back to Dublin, busiest around the TT races in late May and early June |
| Dublin to Edinburgh | 0h 55m | 1,800 GBP | All year | Both. Business every week, and Six Nations weekends when Ireland play in Scotland |
| Dublin to Manchester | 0h 55m | 1,800 GBP | All year | Both. Business traffic, with football through the season |
| Dublin to Birmingham | 1h 00m | 1,800 GBP | All year | Both. Business, trade fairs and the Midlands racecourses |
| Dublin to Gloucestershire | 1h 00m | 1,800 GBP | March | Back to Dublin in Cheltenham week, once racegoers have been dropped |
| Cork to London | 1h 10m | 2,900 GBP | All year, weekdays | Both. Business from Cork's pharmaceutical and technology companies |
| Dublin to London | 1h 15m | 1,900 GBP | All year, weekdays | Both. The mainstay of Irish business aviation |
| Shannon to London | 1h 15m | 2,900 GBP | April to October | Back to London once a golf group has been dropped in the west |
| Dublin to Jersey | 1h 15m | 2,000 GBP | May to September | Back to Dublin. Low frequency, so register the route rather than watch |
| Kerry to London | 1h 20m | 2,900 GBP | April to October | Back to London, the empty half of a golf week in Killarney |
| Dublin to Paris | 1h 30m | 3,300 GBP | All year | Both. Weekly business, with extra traffic on rugby weekends |
| Dublin to Geneva | 2h 00m | 6,300 GBP | December to March | Back to Dublin at the end of each ski week |
| Dublin to Nice | 2h 15m | 8,900 GBP | May to September | Back to Dublin in high summer, outbound in May and September |
| Cork to Faro | 2h 35m | 10,500 GBP | April to October | Both. Irish golfers on the Algarve keep it running outside the summer |
| Dublin to Palma de Mallorca | 2h 40m | 8,400 GBP | June to September | Back to Dublin midweek, after the weekend rush south |
| Dublin to Malaga | 2h 55m | 11,600 GBP | April to October | Both. Golf and second homes on the Costa del Sol |
| Shannon to Boston | 6h 35m | 21,600 GBP | May to October | Both. Golf groups one way and repositioning the other, with preclearance on departure |
| Shannon to New York | 6h 45m | 29,400 GBP | All year | Both. Preclearance makes Shannon the natural departure for a New York sector |
| Dublin to Dubai | 7h 15m | 42,000 GBP | November to March | Both. Rare, so it pays to register the route |
The transatlantic rows are the ones to register rather than watch. An aircraft heading home to the United States after a European trip often routes through Shannon for fuel and preclearance, and it may well be flying empty, but it will not wait long for a buyer.

If you want to see what your route would cost as a standard charter, so you have something to measure an empty leg against, use the calculator below. Fill in the airports, the dates and the number of passengers, add any preference on aircraft type, and we will send a written calculation by email or messenger. Please check your contact details carefully so that we can reply quickly.
The figure the calculator returns is an estimate for planning. The firm quote comes back from our consultants with the cost broken out line by line, and the price agreed there is the price written into the contract.

If you would rather skip the arithmetic, send us the route and the dates instead and a consultant will come back with both numbers, the charter price and any empty leg that fits.
Ireland is in the European Union but not in the Schengen area, and Britain is outside both, so the formalities depend on which way you are travelling.
Typical flight times into Ireland, for the aircraft that usually flies each route:
| From | Into | Typical aircraft | Flight time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Edinburgh | Dublin | Pilatus PC-12 | 0h 55m |
| London | Dublin | Pilatus PC-12 | 1h 15m |
| Paris | Dublin | Citation CJ3 | 1h 30m |
| Amsterdam | Dublin | Citation M2 | 1h 30m |
| Frankfurt | Dublin | Citation XLS+ | 1h 45m |
| Copenhagen | Dublin | Citation XLS+ | 2h 00m |
| Zurich | Dublin | Citation XLS+ | 2h 00m |
| Geneva | Dublin | Citation XLS+ | 2h 00m |
| Munich | Dublin | Citation XLS+ | 2h 10m |
| Madrid | Dublin | Challenger 300 | 2h 15m |
| Nice | Dublin | Challenger 300 | 2h 15m |
| Boston | Shannon | Challenger 350 | about 5h 35m |
| New York | Shannon | Gulfstream G450 | about 5h 50m |
| Dubai | Dublin | Global 6000 | 7h 15m |
The two Atlantic crossings are about an hour quicker eastbound than the westbound times in the price table, because the prevailing westerlies are behind the aircraft on the way to Ireland and against it on the way back.
Ireland's calendar is set by racing, rugby and golf, and in 2027 by the Ryder Cup. The weeks that fill the country are also the ones that produce empty legs the day after.
April, May, October and February are the easiest months to find a sector. The weeks to plan around are Cheltenham in March, the Irish Derby and the Galway Races in summer, and above all the Ryder Cup in September 2027, when the empty legs will come on the Monday.

Into Ireland from Britain the rules are strict, and they apply to private flights too. A dog or cat may only enter through Dublin, Shannon or Cork airports, the airport has to be told at least 24 hours before arrival through the government's advance notice portal, and a dog needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet between one and five days before landing, along with its health certificate.

Coming back is simpler. A flight from Ireland to Great Britain needs no approved route, and a dog arriving directly from Ireland needs no tapeworm treatment, although the microchip, the rabies vaccination and the paperwork are still checked. Mention the animal when you first get in touch, and the choice of airports will be built around it.
