Empty leg flights from London Luton Airport

London Luton is one of the busiest private jet airports in Europe, with roughly 26,700 private flights in 2023, fifth in Europe and second only to Farnborough in Britain. For anyone looking for a repositioning sector, that volume matters more than anything else: the more aircraft come and go, the more of them leave empty, and the more often something appears on the route you want.

Our office is inside the business aviation area here, on Percival Way, a few minutes from the ramp and the handling agents.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.

Why Luton produces so many empty legs

An empty leg exists because an aircraft has to be somewhere it is not. Three features of Luton make that happen often.

Volume
Around 26,700 private flights a year, second only to Farnborough in the UK. Every one way charter out of Luton leaves an aircraft that has to come back, and every arrival leaves one that has to go somewhere next.
Aircraft based here
A large resident fleet across both FBOs, with hangarage and maintenance on site. Based aircraft generate base transfers, maintenance positioning and crew rotations, all of which fly empty.
Round the clock operations
With no curfew, Luton is where operators move aircraft at hours most other London fields cannot offer, although from June to September night movements for business aviation are tightly limited. Outside the summer, a good number of the cheapest sectors on the board are late night or early morning movements.

The airport in detail

Codes LTN (IATA), EGGW (ICAO)
Location Bedfordshire, around 30 miles north of central London. Business aviation area on Percival Way
Runway 07/25, 2,162 m of asphalt. Accepts everything from turboprops to ultra long range jets, with occasional performance limits for the heaviest types in certain conditions
Operating hours 24 hours, seven days a week. From 1 June to 30 September night movements for business aviation are very limited
Slots Mandatory for every arrival and departure. The airport is busy, so a slot is arranged with the flight rather than assumed
Noise rules Tighter limits for older and louder aircraft, with Chapter 2 types banned between 23:00 and 07:00, and a night surcharge for movements in those hours
Customs and border control On site at both FBOs, so international arrivals clear inside the private terminal
Fuel Jet A-1 through both handlers
De icing Available in winter by arrangement with the handling companies
Hangarage and maintenance Both FBOs offer hangarage, and maintenance providers operate on the field

The two private terminals

Luton offers a choice of handler, and the two are different in character rather than in quality.

Signature Flight Support

Part of the largest FBO network in the world, operating from two locations at Luton. Efficient, familiar to crews wherever they are based, and well suited to trips where the aircraft is continuing straight on. Customs on site, hangarage, and the ramp handling that comes with scale.

Harrods Aviation

The boutique option, operating around the clock, subject to the summer night restrictions, from its Luton facility, The Omnia. A quieter arrival and a reputation for discretion, which is why it tends to be chosen for sports teams, touring parties and anyone who would rather not share a lounge.

On an empty leg you do not always get to choose: the sector belongs to the operator, and the operator has its own contract with a handler. We will tell you which terminal before you book, and the flight brief carries the address and the crew contact.

Empty leg prices from UK airports

What the ground costs

Handling, landing and parking are billed by the airport and the FBO rather than by us, and they appear as their own lines in any quote. Luton publishes charges by aircraft weight and noise category, so these figures are indicative rather than a tariff.

From about 580 GBP
a daytime landing for a modern business jet, and from about 800 GBP for an older, louder type
From about 530 GBP
night surcharge between 23:00 and 07:00, half as much again from June to September
Roughly 65 GBP
per hour of parking for a super midsize jet of about 18 tonnes after the first fifteen minutes, which is why a waiting aircraft is not always the cheaper option
No PPR
unlike Farnborough, Luton needs a slot but no prior permission number

Against Farnborough the difference is real but modest: handling there tends to cost more on a departure. On a charter that matters at the margins. On an empty leg it does not arise at all, because the airport comes with the sector.

Two things do move the number noticeably. Night movements carry a surcharge, and a higher one in summer. And hangarage is charged separately, with limited space that has to be booked ahead, particularly in winter and around the busiest weeks.

Parking, and why it matters in summer

One practical detail that catches people out. Ramp space at Luton is finite, and in the busiest weeks of the year it fills. When that happens, larger aircraft are sometimes required to drop passengers and reposition to Stansted, Farnborough or Oxford until the return.

Give us your phone number and we'll call you back

Empty leg sectors start from £1,200 for the whole aircraft
The same aircraft as a standard charter starts from £3,000

By clicking the button you agree to the data processing policy.

For you as a passenger this changes nothing, but it changes the economics for the operator, and it is one of the reasons short notice sectors out of Luton in high summer are so often available cheaply. The aircraft has to move anyway.

Getting into London

The airport that wins is the one that gets you to your actual address fastest, not the one with the longest runway. These are typical off peak times from Luton.

Destination By car Fastest alternative
Mayfair and the West End 45 to 60 min Helicopter to Battersea, 15 to 20 min in the air
The City 50 to 70 min Thameslink direct to Farringdon or City Thameslink, 30 to 45 min
Canary Wharf 55 to 80 min Thameslink to Farringdon, then the Elizabeth line
North London and Hertfordshire 20 to 40 min Car, comfortably
Oxford and the Cotswolds 75 to 100 min Farnborough or London Oxford usually win on this leg

By road, a chauffeur meets the aircraft on the ramp where the handler allows it, and the M1 is the constraint rather than the distance. By rail, a short transfer from the private terminal takes you to Luton Airport Parkway, where Thameslink runs into St Pancras and on through the City, which beats the car comfortably in the Friday evening peak. By helicopter, the London Heliport at Battersea is 15 to 20 minutes in the air and is worth arranging when the flight lands into evening traffic.

Three situations, three answers

Late dinner in Geneva, home the same night
Luton or Stansted for most of the year, with a night slot arranged in advance. Farnborough and London City are shut, Biggin Hill closes at 23:00 on weekdays and earlier at weekends, and Northolt will not take a spontaneous movement. In summer Luton allows very few night movements and Stansted has no business aviation slots between 23:30 and 06:00, so the answer then is an earlier return.
Friday evening to Nice in July
Decided by where the aircraft already is rather than by the terminal. Luton has one of the deepest pools of sectors on that corridor, so if a southbound sector exists it often starts here. If the road out of the City is the problem, the rail link is faster than the M1 at that hour.
A 09:30 meeting in Mayfair
Northolt and Biggin Hill, with a helicopter onward, are the tighter answers if they are available. Luton works comfortably if you land by about 07:45.

Travelling with a dog or a cat

Animals usually travel in the cabin at your feet on a private flight, and Luton is one of the London airports approved for pets arriving on a private or charter flight. Two things have to line up on arrivals into Great Britain: the operator must hold the relevant approval to carry animals, and the route has to be an approved one, flights from Ireland excepted. That is a formal pairing rather than a preference, and it is checked per booking.

dog in the cabin of a private jet

When you depart from Luton, the question is simpler, because the rules that apply are those of the country you are flying to. Tell us about the animal at the enquiry stage and we will filter the aircraft accordingly rather than discover the problem later.

The six London business aviation airports

They are not interchangeable. What decides the right one is usually the time from wheels down to your front door, not the length of the runway or the name on the terminal. On an empty leg the airport comes with the sector, so this is most useful when you are choosing a charter or deciding which routes to watch.

Farnborough
FAB / EGLF
Hours Closed overnight
Runway 2,440 m
Into London 45 to 75 min

Business aviation only and the best terminal in Europe. PPR required. The default for west and south west London, Surrey and Hampshire.

London Luton
you are here
LTN / EGGW
Hours 24h airport, night limits
Runway 2,162 m
Into London 45 to 60 min

The widest choice of sectors and two competing FBOs, with no PPR. The airport runs around the clock, but business aviation night movements are restricted and in recent summers have been withdrawn between June and September.

London Biggin Hill
BQH / EGKB
Hours Closed overnight
Runway About 1,800 m
Into London 40 to 70 min to the City

South east London, Kent and Canary Wharf. Helicopter shuttle to Battersea in minutes, and a point of entry for pets on private aircraft.

London Stansted
STN / EGSS
Hours 24h airport, night limits
Runway 3,049 m
Into London 60 to 75 min

The longest runway of the London fields, ramp space when Luton is full, and the home of VIP airliners. Open around the clock, but business aviation night slots are capped and are being reduced.

RAF Northolt
NHT / EGWU
Hours Long day, not 24 hours
Runway 1,684 m
Into London 35 to 50 min to Park Lane

The shortest drive to Mayfair of any London field. Civil movements are capped and booked well in advance, so availability decides rather than price.

London City
LCY / EGLC
Hours Closes in the evening
Runway 1,508 m, steep approach
Into London 15 to 25 min to Canary Wharf

The only private jet centre inside London. Restricted to certified types flown by specifically approved crews.

Drive times are typical off peak figures and move considerably in the Friday evening peak. Where the road is the problem, a helicopter transfer from Biggin Hill, Luton or Stansted reaches central London in well under half an hour. No London field offers unrestricted business aviation access through the night, so a departure after 23:00 needs planning rather than assuming.

Empty leg calendar for London Luton, month by month

Empty legs run against the traffic, so the month decides as much as the route does. This is how a normal year behaves here, based on how the corridors out of Luton actually move.

Airport activity
How busy the field is, which decides slot availability and what a charter costs.
Empty legs
How many repositioning sectors reach the market, and how deep the discounts run.

January
Steady Good
Alpine returns dominate. Aircraft go into Geneva, Zurich and Chambery full and come back empty, so the bargain is the flight home. Davos week is the exception, when both directions sell.
February
Busy Good
Half term and peak ski. Friday and Saturday outbounds carry a premium; midweek returns from the Alps are among the cheapest sectors of the winter.
March
Steady Strong
The ski season unwinds and operators start moving aircraft out of the Alps. One of the best months of the year to be watching a route.
April
Steady Strong
A shoulder month with the Alps finished and the Mediterranean not yet open. Repositioning is heavy in both directions and discounts are among the deepest of the year.
May
Busy Fair
The Cannes Film Festival pulls everything south, with the Monaco Grand Prix following in early June. Southbound sectors are scarce and expensive; northbound ones are unusually cheap.
June
Busy Good
The Monaco Grand Prix, Royal Ascot, the run up to Wimbledon and the opening of the Mediterranean season. Nice and Ibiza start producing regular empty returns into Luton.
July
Very busy Fair
Peak. Nice becomes one of the busiest business jet airports in Europe and the ramp at Luton fills, which pushes aircraft to reposition out at short notice. Those forced movements are where the value is.
August
Very busy Fair
Olbia, Mykonos and the Balearics at full stretch. Operators sell both directions, so discounts narrow. Midweek departures are where value survives.
September
Busy Strong
The single best month here. The Mediterranean season unwinds, northbound repositioning is heavy, and demand has started to drop away.
October
Steady Strong
The second shoulder. The Mediterranean is quiet and the Alps have not opened, so sectors appear in both directions at good prices.
November
Quiet Thin
The lowest demand of the year. Fewer sectors on the board, but the ones that exist are often very cheap, because nobody else wants them.
December
Busy Fair
Two different months in one. The first fortnight is quiet and cheap. From about the twentieth, the Alps and the holidays make it one of the most expensive stretches of the year.

If you can choose when to fly, September, April, March and October are the months to aim for. If you cannot, the rule holds all year: in a busy month buy the direction nobody else wants, which in summer is the flight home and in winter is the flight out of the Alps.

Questions about flying from Luton

Can I fly out of Luton at night?
Usually, outside the summer. Luton runs 24 hours with no curfew, which is why it is a natural choice for a late arrival from the Alps or an early departure. A night movement needs a slot and carries a surcharge. From 1 June to 30 September night movements for business aviation are very limited and reserved for the quietest aircraft, so a summer night flight has to be planned well ahead or moved to an earlier time.
How early should I arrive?
Fifteen to twenty minutes for a domestic sector, twenty to thirty for an international departure. Passport control happens inside the private terminal and is usually a matter of minutes.
Which terminal will I use?
Signature or Harrods Aviation, decided by the operator flying the sector. You will have the name, the address and the crew contact in the flight brief before you travel.
Is Luton cheaper than Farnborough?
Generally yes on handling and landing. Farnborough wins on the terminal experience and on the drive if you are west of London. On an empty leg the airport is fixed by the operator in any case.
What size of aircraft can use it?
Effectively the whole business aviation fleet, from a Pilatus PC-12 turboprop to a Bombardier Global or a Gulfstream. In hot weather or with a full fuel load the heaviest types can face performance limits, which the operator plans for.
How quickly can you arrange a departure?
Three to four hours from enquiry to wheels up is realistic when an aircraft and a slot are free. Because we are based on the field, we can move quickly here.
