Empty leg flights to and from Chambéry

Chambéry was the capital of the Dukes of Savoy long before it was French, and its old town still shows it: the ducal castle, arcaded streets, painted façades and the Fontaine des Éléphants. A few minutes to the north, Aix-les-Bains has drawn visitors to its thermal baths since Roman times. Aix stands on the eastern shore of the Lac du Bourget, the largest natural lake entirely within France, with the royal Abbey of Hautecombe across the water on the western shore. For most British travellers, though, Chambéry means one thing: the shortest jet route to the Trois Vallées, Paradiski and the Tarentaise. France is one hour ahead of the UK, and a light jet from London lands here in about an hour and forty minutes.

The airport is Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc, code CMF, on the southern tip of the lake between Chambéry and Aix-les-Bains. It is quiet for most of the year and one of Europe's busiest business aviation fields on a winter Saturday. We plan every flight around its winter rules and book the slot, the parking and the transfer to the resort together.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.

Set up an alert for Chambéry

Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up between the UK and Chambéry.

Please fill in both the departure and the arrival city.

Nothing is stored on this site. The button opens a chat with the message already written, and you send it yourself. We reply during office hours, 07:00 to 23:00, and check messages outside them too.

Why so many jets leave Chambéry empty

Chambéry combines a short, intense season with very little room to keep aircraft, and that mix produces a steady supply of positioning flights with nobody on board.

Chalets change hands on Saturday
Chalets in Courchevel, Méribel, Val Thorens and Val d'Isère change guests on Saturdays. A jet that brings one family in at lunchtime often takes another home in the afternoon, but just as often it leaves empty and returns empty a week later.
Few stands, short stays
The apron holds around thirty business aircraft, and in peak weeks the airport decides overnight parking case by case. Operators therefore send most jets home or to a larger airport after the drop, and each of those flights can be sold.
A season of eighteen weeks
Airline flights and most business traffic are packed between mid December and mid April. Aircraft converge on the valley from all over Europe for those weekends, and many of them fly one direction without passengers.
Helicopters and altiports
Many passengers change straight onto a helicopter for Courchevel or Méribel, so the jet has no reason to wait. Its return to base, or its next job from Geneva or Lyon, is released as an empty leg.
An air taxi company at home here
Pan Européenne Air Service, the oldest French air taxi company still flying, has been based at Chambéry since 1977 with Phenom jets and an Embraer approved maintenance centre, so aircraft also start and finish their day here.

Most sectors appear on winter Saturdays and during Christmas and New Year. From May to November Chambéry is quiet, and the sectors that appear are mostly flights for the lakes, the Savoie vineyards and summer holidays in the mountains.

Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc Airport in detail

The airfield began as a mixed civil and military project in 1934, its first terminal opened in 1954 and airline services began in 1960. For decades it was known as Chambéry Aix-les-Bains, and it took its present name in 2016 after the terminal was renovated. The airport belongs to the Savoie department and has been run by VINCI Airports since 2004, the company that also runs Grenoble. Traffic is almost entirely seasonal: 163,221 passengers passed through in 2023, most of them between December and April on flights from Britain.

Codes CMF (IATA) and LFLB (ICAO)
Location Viviers-du-Lac, on the southern shore of the Lac du Bourget, about 9 kilometres north of central Chambéry and 6 kilometres south of central Aix-les-Bains
Runways A paved runway, 18/36, of 2,020 metres by 45 metres, and a parallel grass strip of 700 metres for light aircraft
Landing aids An ILS for runway 18, approached from the north over the lake; runway 36 has no instrument approach
Elevation About 235 metres above sea level, in a valley surrounded by mountains
Crew requirement A category C airport: every captain needs a local briefing, and full training to fly at night or in low cloud and poor visibility
Operator VINCI Airports, on behalf of the Savoie department
Business terminal Open daily from 07:30 to 21:00 between December and April, to 22:00 on Fridays; in summer from 09:30 to 18:30 on weekdays and 09:00 to 18:00 at weekends, with other hours on request
Winter capacity Slots and prior permission for business aircraft on winter weekends, with arrivals limited to five an hour and overnight parking granted case by case
Handling Compulsory, provided by the airport company; fuel from Air BP through the same company
Border control Police and customs on site in winter; in the rest of the year on request, with a general declaration filed at least 24 hours ahead
Airlines Winter flights by British Airways, Jet2 and TUI to London and many other British airports, and almost nothing in summer

For pilots, Chambéry is a mountain airport. The only instrument approach comes in from the north, down the length of the lake, to runway 18, and the high ground on both sides means that a missed approach or a circling manoeuvre follows tight published routes. For that reason, French rules classify Chambéry as a category C airport: every captain must study its procedures before the flight, and full training is required before flying there at night or when cloud and visibility are low. Operators without that training send their jets to Grenoble, Geneva or Lyon instead. Snow, ice and early winter darkness add to the planning, and on a February Saturday every slot is taken.

The business terminal at Chambéry

Private passengers never enter the airline terminal. Chambéry has a separate business aviation terminal of about 400 square metres, run by the airport company, with its own lounges and border control, so while airline passengers are advised to arrive two to three hours early on a ski Saturday, a private party is usually through in minutes.

A terminal run by the airport itself
Trading as Chambéry Business Airport, the terminal has its own VIP lounges for arrivals and for departures, a check in room for departing guests, a meeting room and office facilities, with a small dedicated team looking after passengers and crews. In winter it opens every day from 07:30 to 21:00, and until 22:00 on Fridays.
Handling and fuel
Handling is compulsory and provided by the airport company, which also supplies Air BP fuel, de icing and ground equipment. Flight support firms act as supervising agents for some operators, but the work on the apron is done by the airport's own team.
Thirty stands for business jets
Around thirty stands are set aside for business aircraft. The first hour on the ground is free, after which parking is charged by the tonne and the hour, and in the winter season an overnight stay at the weekend has to be requested and is not guaranteed.
Outside the season
From May to November the business terminal opens from 09:30 to 18:30 on weekdays and from 09:00 to 18:00 at weekends, and later movements are arranged on request. Border police and customs must be booked in advance, so a summer flight to the lakes or the vineyards needs a little more notice than one in February.
Drinks in the lounge, lunch next door
The business lounges serve drinks and light refreshments but have no restaurant of their own, and catering for the flight is ordered in advance through the handler. The main terminal next door has a bar and restaurant before security, open to anyone, which is useful for a driver or for guests seeing you off; airline passengers also find a duty free shop in the boarding lounge.
Cars, limousines and helicopters
The airport works with partner limousine companies, and chauffeured cars and ski transfer vans wait directly outside the business terminal. A helicopter can be brought alongside the aircraft, so once the border check is done the bags go straight from one hold to the other.

Because there is only one handler at Chambéry, the choice lies in the operator and the aircraft rather than the terminal. We confirm the slot, the parking and the border control with the booking.

Arriving at Chambéry, step by step

An arrival at Chambéry takes minutes on a quiet weekday and a little longer on a February Saturday. The steps below follow a typical winter landing; departure is the same process backwards.

ON THE APRON
Met at the aircraft steps
The airport's handling team meets the aircraft, takes you the short distance to the business terminal and starts unloading the bags while the crew shut down.
PASSPORTS
The French police at the terminal
A flight from Britain comes from outside Schengen, so the border police check each passport in the business terminal. On the first crossing since the EU's biometric register began, travellers are photographed, and those aged twelve or more also give fingerprints.
SKIS AND BAGS
From the hold to the van
Nothing goes onto a carousel here. The handler unloads skis, boot bags and suitcases and takes them through customs to your car or transfer van, so tell us the number of ski bags when you book: the hold, not the cabin, often decides the aircraft.
THE ROAD
Winter tyres by law
From 1 November to 31 March French mountain law requires winter tyres or chains in the Savoie resorts, and a professional transfer company provides both. On Saturdays the road through Moûtiers is where time is lost.
BY HELICOPTER
Straight to the slopes
Helicopters to Courchevel, Méribel and the other resorts can meet the jet on the apron, weather and daylight permitting. A typical Bell 407 takes five passengers with two hold bags and three cabin bags, and skis by arrangement, so a larger party needs two machines or a van for the luggage. In midwinter the light fades around five, so a helicopter connection means landing by early afternoon.
THE LOUNGE
Coffee while the car loads
Most passengers pass straight through, but the arrivals and departures lounges offer a seat and drinks while the skis are loaded and the paperwork is completed. On the way home, the border police check passports in the terminal before you walk out to the aircraft.
TAX FREE
French VAT back on purchases
Visitors living outside the EU can claim back French VAT on purchases of more than 100 euros in the same shop within three days; customs at the business terminal validate the forms in winter, and the refund is paid by the method chosen in the shop.
AIRLINE ONE WAY
Winter flights home
If the private flight covers only one direction, British Airways flies to three London airports at weekends in the ski season, and Jet2 and TUI serve many British regional airports.

At Chambéry the timetable is set by the slot, the parking and the daylight. We fix all three when the flight is booked, and we keep Geneva, Grenoble or Lyon in reserve in case the weather or the weekend rush closes the door.

Private lounge for jet passengers at Chambéry airport

Five things to check before booking Chambéry

A Chambéry quote holds only when these five points are settled, and we confirm each of them in writing before you book.

A crew trained for Chambéry
Every captain must be briefed on Chambéry, and only crews with full local training can fly the approach at night or in low cloud. We check this for every aircraft we propose, because an untrained crew means a diversion on the first grey afternoon.
A weekend slot
On winter weekends arrivals are rationed and slots go early, especially in February. As soon as the dates are fixed, the handler requests the slot and the parking together.
Where the jet waits
An aircraft rarely stays at Chambéry over a winter weekend. Most drop, leave and return, which is exactly why empty sectors appear, and why a week's ski holiday is usually priced as two separate flights.
The French tax on the way home
Every passenger leaving France on a private charter to Britain or elsewhere in Europe pays 420 euros of solidarity tax in a jet and 210 euros in a turboprop, so the flight home costs more than the flight out.
A plan for bad weather
Snow showers, low cloud and freezing fog can close the approach for hours. We agree an alternate airport and a road transfer from it in advance, so that a diversion costs time rather than the holiday.

From the airport to the lake, the town and the resorts

Chambéry is the gateway to the Tarentaise and Maurienne valleys, so the Trois Vallées, Paradiski and Espace Killy are all within reach by road. Times are for a chauffeured car leaving the business terminal on a normal winter weekday; on a Saturday in February, allow an hour more for the upper resorts.

Destination From the airport What is there
Aix-les-Bains About 10 minutes The spa town, the lakeside promenade and the casino
Chambéry old town About 15 minutes The castle of the Dukes of Savoy and the Fontaine des Éléphants
Annecy About 45 minutes The lake, the canals of the old town and its lakeside hotels
Courchevel 1850 About 1h 15m to 1h 45m The Trois Vallées, palace hotels and the altiport
Méribel About 1h 15m to 1h 45m The heart of the Trois Vallées and its chalet villages
Val Thorens About 1h 45m to 2h 15m The highest resort in the Trois Vallées, at 2,300 metres
Les Arcs and La Plagne About 1h 30m to 2h Paradiski, linked by the Vanoise Express cable car
Val d'Isère and Tignes About 2h to 2h 30m Espace Killy and skiing into early May on the glaciers
La Clusaz About 1h to 1h 15m A village resort in the Aravis, east of Annecy
Geneva About 1h The city, the lake and its airport, just across the Swiss border

Helicopters from the Chambéry apron reach Courchevel in about 20 to 25 minutes, Méribel and Val Thorens in about 25, Tignes in about 30 and Val d'Isère in about 35, weather and daylight permitting. In summer the drive to the Lac d'Annecy takes about 45 minutes, and the Beaufortain and the Bauges are within about an hour.

Taxes and charges on a Chambéry trip

Three public charges sit next to the aircraft price on a Chambéry trip: British duty on the flight out, the French solidarity tax on the flight home and the tourist tax charged by the resort or town where you sleep.

UK duty
Air Passenger Duty on the flight out of Britain, Band A, for jets of 5.7 tonnes or more
French solidarity tax
420 euros a passenger leaving France for Britain on a private jet, 210 euros on a turboprop
Tourist tax
a nightly charge per person set by each town or resort, highest for palaces and five star hotels
Airport and handling
landing, parking and handling are billed to the operator and included in its price

France raised its solidarity tax on air tickets sharply from 1 March 2025, and business aviation carries the heaviest rate. For a flight within Europe, each passenger leaving a French airport on a commercial private flight pays 420 euros in a jet and 210 euros in a turboprop, and the 2026 budget left these rates unchanged. The tax is due only on departure from France, so it applies to the flight home from Chambéry but not to the flight out, and a sector flown with an empty cabin pays nothing; once you buy it, the passengers on board pay in the usual way. Some families fly home from Geneva instead, where the Swiss side of the airport is outside the French tax.

Britain levies APD when the aircraft leaves a UK airport, and flights to France fall into Band A. A seat on a jet weighing 5.7 to 20 tonnes currently carries 32 GBP of duty and one on a heavier jet 142 GBP, and from the first day of April 2027 every private jet above the 5.7 tonne threshold moves to one rate of 146.63 GBP a head. Nothing is due on the smallest jets or on departures from the Channel Islands, while Scottish airports switch to Holyrood's Air Departure Tax in April 2027.

Annecy, Grenoble, Geneva and the other airports for the Savoie Alps

Chambéry is the closest jet airport to most Tarentaise resorts, but on a busy Saturday or in bad weather the neighbouring airports decide whether the trip runs on time.

Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc, LFLB. The nearest jet airport to the Trois Vallées and Paradiski, with 2,020 metres of runway, a business terminal open daily in winter and slots rationed on weekends.
Annecy Mont Blanc, LFLP. A smaller airport just outside Annecy with a runway of 1,630 metres, used by light and midsize jets for Megève, the Aravis and the lake, with the same local crew training rule.
Grenoble Alpes Isère, LFLS. Also run by VINCI Airports, with a runway of 3,050 metres and no special crew training. It is the usual alternative for larger jets, although the Tarentaise resorts are about two to three hours away by road.
Geneva, LSGG. The largest airport of the western Alps, about an hour from Chambéry by road, with several business aviation terminals and, on its Swiss side, no French solidarity tax.
Courchevel altiport, LFLJ. A 537 metre sloping runway at 2,007 metres, closed to charter jets but reached in 20 to 25 minutes by helicopter from Chambéry, or directly by a few approved turboprops.

Routes from Britain and Ireland to Chambéry, and the direction each tends to fly empty

The price of a sector covers the whole aircraft, however many seats you fill, and each flight time runs from take off to touchdown. Chambéry is about 800 kilometres from London, well within the range of every jet in our list, from a Citation M2 for a couple flying back to Biggin Hill or Jersey to a Challenger 350 or a Praetor 600 for a chalet party with a hold full of skis. The French solidarity tax applies on the way home. If your dates cannot move, the charter list near the top gives the benchmark.

Entering France at Chambéry: passports, customs and rules for the road

Britain is outside the EU and the Schengen area, so a private flight to Chambéry crosses an external border, and the French border police and customs clear it inside the business terminal.

  • Passport. The French police refuse a British passport that is more than ten years old on arrival or that expires less than three months after your last day in Schengen.
  • Length of stay. No visa is needed for up to 90 days in any 180, but the days add up across the Schengen countries, so a week in Verbier or Zermatt during the same winter counts as well.
  • Entry/Exit System. Since April 2026 the EU has recorded British visitors electronically instead of stamping passports; a photograph is taken on the first crossing, and fingerprints from the age of twelve.
  • ETIAS. The EU's online travel permit has been postponed again, with no starting date announced; the planned fee is 20 euros for three years.
  • Customs. The duty free allowance for an adult coming from the UK is 4 litres of still wine, 16 of beer, one litre of spirits or two of fortified or sparkling wine and 200 cigarettes, with 430 euros of other goods on top; anyone carrying 10,000 euros or more in cash declares it.
  • Food. Meat and dairy products from Britain are not allowed into the EU, so the Reblochon and the Beaufort for the chalet are bought in Savoie.
  • Back to Britain. Flying home privately, an adult may land in Britain with two cases of Apremont or Chignin, since the still wine limit is 18 litres, as well as 42 litres of beer, 4 of spirits or 9 of fortified wine, 200 cigarettes and goods worth 270 GBP, all without duty; from 1 October 2026 sparkling wine is counted as wine and cider as beer.

Empty leg calendar for Chambéry, month by month

Chambéry lives by the ski calendar: a crowded winter from mid December to mid April, then a quiet summer of lakes, walking and vineyards.

Demand
how hard it is to find a trained crew, a weekend slot at Chambéry and a chalet at short notice
Empty legs
how often Chambéry sectors appear on our list

January
BusyStrong
Snow sure weeks after New Year, with quieter slopes and easier slots in the middle of the month.
February
Very busyStrong
British half term and the French school holidays fill every weekend slot, and the most empty legs of the year appear.
March
BusyGood
Spring skiing and long sunny days; slots become easier in the second half of the month.
April
SteadyGood
Easter falls early, on 28 March 2027, so April is calmer, and the airline season ends in mid April.
May
QuietThin
The resorts close, the business terminal moves to its shorter summer hours and the lakeside towns wake up.
June
SteadyFair
The lake beaches open, and walkers and cyclists arrive for the Alpine passes.
July
BusyFair
The Trois Vallées summer lifts, festivals in Aix-les-Bains and family holidays by the water.
August
BusyFair
Peak summer on the Lac du Bourget and the Lac d'Annecy, with French families on holiday.
September
SteadyThin
The grape harvest in the Savoie vineyards and calm roads into the mountains.
October
QuietThin
Autumn colours in the Bauges and a few business trips to Chambéry and Aix.
November
QuietThin
The Tignes glacier and Val Thorens open for early skiing, while the airport prepares for winter.
December
Very busyStrong
The season opens in mid December, and Christmas and New Year bring the second great rush of the winter.

Travellers who can move their dates should aim at a February Saturday or the festive weekends, when the supply is greatest. For fixed dates and easy slots, the second half of January and the end of March are the calmest weeks of the season. Further ahead, Courchevel and Val d'Isère are due to stage the Alpine skiing events of the Winter Olympics in February 2030, which will bring an exceptional rush to Chambéry.

Three situations at Chambéry, three answers

A Saturday chalet week in Méribel
Land at Chambéry by early afternoon, drive about an hour and a half or take a helicopter of about 25 minutes, and let the jet go home. The positioning flights before and after your week are the empty legs to look for, and we watch both directions for you.
A family with twelve pairs of skis
The hold decides the aircraft more than the seats do. A Challenger 350 or a Praetor 600 offers a far larger hold than a light jet, and on a February weekend such aircraft often fly home empty after dropping another large group.
A summer week on the lake
Between May and November slots are plentiful, but the terminal staff and the border police have to be called in for each flight. Book a few days ahead, and Aix-les-Bains is ten minutes from the aircraft steps.

Flying to Chambéry with a dog or a cat

A pet travelling from Britain to France needs a microchip, a rabies vaccination at least 21 days before the trip and an animal health certificate signed by an official vet within ten days of arrival; since April 2026 an EU pet passport held by a British resident is no longer valid. France requires no tapeworm treatment on the way in. The border police check the animal in the business terminal, so tell us about it when you book.

Dog in the cabin of a private jet to Chambéry

The return journey needs more care. Only an operator holding British approval for live animals can fly a pet into the UK, and the dog's worming tablet has to be given by a vet one to five days before touchdown, that is 24 to 120 hours. Vets in the ski resorts and in Chambéry are used to these appointments; book yours when you book the flight, so that our search only includes operators with pet approval.

Private flights to Chambéry: your questions

Is Chambéry the best airport for Courchevel and Méribel?
For a jet, usually yes. It is normally the quickest airport to reach them from: the resorts are a drive of up to about an hour and three quarters, or a short helicopter hop. On a full Saturday or in poor weather, Geneva, Grenoble and Lyon are the alternatives.
How long is the flight to Chambéry?
About 1h 35m to 1h 45m from London, Farnborough, Biggin Hill, Oxford, Southampton, Bristol, Jersey and Birmingham, 1h 55m to 2h 10m from Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Cardiff, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Belfast and Dublin, and 2h 15m to 2h 25m from Glasgow and Aberdeen.
Why does the crew need special training?
The only instrument approach runs down a narrow valley between mountains, and French rules require every captain to be briefed on it and fully trained before flying at night or in low cloud. We only offer aircraft whose crews qualify.
Can the jet stay at Chambéry during my holiday?
Rarely on a winter weekend, when parking is scarce and granted case by case. Most jets drop, leave and come back, which is where the empty legs come from; outside the season, a longer stay is easier.
What does an empty leg to Chambéry cost?
The Citation M2 sectors back to Biggin Hill and to Jersey start at around 2,700 GBP, and that buys the entire jet. As full charters on dates you pick, our eighteen routes range between roughly 6,400 GBP and 18,600 GBP.
What is the French tax on the flight home?
For a flight to Britain, 420 euros per passenger on a jet and 210 euros on a turboprop, charged only when leaving France. The flight out from Britain pays UK duty instead.
Is Chambéry open in summer?
Yes. Summer flights are welcome, but the private terminal works shorter days in that period, roughly from half past nine to half past six, and the police and customs officers need to be booked beforehand.
Do I need a visa for France?
No. British visitors stay visa free for up to 90 days in any 180 across Schengen, and there is still no online permit to buy before travelling.
And if nothing is released for my dates?
Tell us the weekend, the size of the party and the ski bags. Chambéry, Geneva and Grenoble release sectors every winter Saturday, and if none fits we price a charter with the slot and the transfer included.

Call +44 7857 574938 , message the same number on WhatsApp , or write to flight@empty-leg.co.uk . Tell us the dates, the number of passengers, the ski bags and the resort or town you are heading for. We reply with the sectors that fit beside the charter price, and one quote covers the slot, the handling at Chambéry, the French solidarity tax and the transfer to the chalet door.
