Empty leg flights to and from Helsinki

Helsinki is the capital of Finland, a business city of technology, engineering and design on the Gulf of Finland, and the starting point for most trips to the Finnish lakes, the archipelago and Lapland. Its airport, Helsinki-Vantaa, code HEL, lies about 17 kilometres north of the city centre, and a midsize jet from London reaches it in just under three hours. Private passengers use a separate business terminal with its own customs and passport control, open around the clock, and the drive to the Market Square and the Esplanadi takes around half an hour.

The airport is fully coordinated, so every private flight needs a slot, and Finland, two hours ahead of the UK, belongs to both the EU and Schengen.

Helsinki sectors available today

The first list shows every sector we hold into or out of Helsinki-Vantaa, and adds flights at Tampere, Turku and Tallinn when they appear. Underneath, the second list prices the same aircraft as an ordinary charter on dates of your choosing, which shows how much each released sector saves.

Ask us what is available at Helsinki right now.

This board refreshes through the day as operators release sectors, and it shows only part of the market: a large share of repositioning flights never reach a public list at all. Check back shortly, or tell us your route and dates and we will look at what operators are holding at this moment.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.

Set up an alert for Helsinki

Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up between the UK and Helsinki.

Please fill in both the departure and the arrival city.

Nothing is stored on this site. The button opens a chat with the message already written, and you send it yourself. We reply during office hours, 07:00 to 23:00, and check messages outside them too.

Why Helsinki produces empty legs

Helsinki sits at the far north eastern corner of the European business jet network, about three hours from Britain. At that distance few operators keep an aircraft waiting for a return, so many flights to and from the city travel one way with passengers and the other way empty.

Technology and engineering business
Nokia, Kone, Neste, Wärtsilä and a large games and software industry have their head offices in and around Helsinki and Espoo. Board meetings, investor visits and factory tours bring executives in for a day or two, and their jets usually head home in between.
Slush and the investor calendar
Slush, one of Europe's largest start up and venture capital events, fills Helsinki every November; the 2026 edition runs on 18 and 19 November and expects more than 12,000 people from over 70 countries. Private arrivals peak just before it and departures just after.
Gateway to Lapland
Many visitors combine a few days in Helsinki with Rovaniemi, Kittilä or Ivalo in winter. A jet that takes a party north from Helsinki often flies back south empty, and one sent to collect a family at the end of a Lapland holiday often flies north empty by way of Helsinki.
Long sectors, short stays
A round trip from London takes close to six hours of flying. Operators rarely leave a crew abroad for a two day visit, so they fly the aircraft home and send it back for the return.
Summer on the archipelago
From late May to August the islands, the lakes and the long light evenings bring leisure travellers, and weekend trips produce empty flights in both directions.

Released sectors appear most reliably on weekday business runs between Helsinki and southern England, while leisure adds the most in June, in August and in the days around Slush. January is the quietest month in the city, just as Lapland enjoys its busiest weeks.

Helsinki-Vantaa Airport in detail

Helsinki-Vantaa opened in 1952, in time for the Summer Olympics held in the city that year, and took over from the small airfield at Malmi, whose runways were too short for the new airliners. It is the hub of Finnair and by far the busiest airport in Finland, and since 2022 all airline passengers have used a single terminal with Schengen and non Schengen areas.

Codes HEL (IATA) and EFHK (ICAO)
Location In the city of Vantaa, about 17 kilometres north of Helsinki city centre
Opened 1952, for the Helsinki Summer Olympics
Runways Three runways, all 60 metres wide: 04R/22L of 3,500 metres, 04L/22R of 3,060 metres and 15/33 of 2,901 metres
Operator Finavia, the state company that runs most Finnish airports
Traffic 16,980,287 passengers in 2025, 4.1 per cent more than in 2024, about a third of them changing flights
Business jets The Citation Sovereign, the Legacy 650 and the Phenom 300 were the private types seen most often in 2025
Slots A fully coordinated, level 3 airport: every business and general aviation flight needs a slot, requested through the Business Flight Center at least three hours before arrival or departure
Permission Visiting business aircraft need prior permission and must have ground handling arranged in advance
Hours Open around the clock, with customs, passport control, fuel, handling and de icing all available 24 hours a day
Schengen Finland is in both the EU and Schengen, so flights from Britain arrive at the external border, with EES registration on the first entry
Business terminal The Finavia Business Flight Center, Liikelentotie 8, on the south side of the apron next to the main terminal
Services Jet A1, de icing, catering, hotel, car and helicopter bookings through the Business Flight Center

For crews Helsinki-Vantaa is one of the best equipped winter airports in Europe. Finavia clears a runway of snow in about 11 minutes on average, and in the extreme cold of January 2026, when flights in Lapland were cancelled, Helsinki kept operating. Three long runways leave room to choose one into the wind, and the airport rarely closes. What decides a winter departure is de icing time, so we build it into the schedule from November to March and keep Tampere or Turku as the alternate.

Private jet cabin on a flight to Helsinki

Arriving at Helsinki by private jet: the business terminal, lounges and formalities

Unlike many European airports, Helsinki has a proper private terminal. Finavia, the airport operator, runs the Business Flight Center itself, and passengers of business jets pass through it instead of the main terminal.

The Business Flight Center
A private terminal at the southern edge of the apron, next to the main terminal but with its own entrance and exit. Customs, passport control, security screening and baggage handling all take place inside, so the walk from the car to the aircraft is a short one.
Lounges and comfort
Passengers wait in private lounges with free internet, coffee, soft drinks and snacks, while crews have their own rest and work rooms and a self service briefing desk. The building is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and staff answer the phone around the clock for last minute changes.
Finnish border guards on site
Britain is outside Schengen, so Finnish border guards check passports on landing, inside the Business Flight Center, and the EES records fingerprints and a photograph on your first entry. Because the service runs around the clock, a late arrival needs no special arrangement.
Bags and the car
The terminal staff carry your luggage from the hold through customs to the car, and on departure take it through screening and back on board. Cars park within a few metres of the building, so there is no long walk with cases in the snow. Skis for Lapland and bulky winter kit are easier in a midsize jet than a light one; mention them when you enquire.
Eating before you fly
The lounges serve drinks and snacks rather than meals, and there is no restaurant inside the Business Flight Center. Catering for the cabin, from Finnish salmon and rye bread to full hot menus, is ordered through the terminal or the operator, ideally a day ahead. The restaurants of the main terminal and the Hilton Helsinki Airport hotel are a few minutes away by car.
The presidential terminal
For heads of state Finavia keeps a separate VIP terminal, known as VIP Presidentti, about a kilometre from the passenger terminals. It opened in 1997, was renovated in spring 2025 by the interior architect Sisse Collander, keeps its blue and white decor with columns shaped like forest trees, and can be hired for private events when no official visit is under way.
Guests travelling by airline
Anyone in the party flying with an airline uses the main terminal. Finavia sells a VIP service there with a private lounge, help with check in and luggage, an escort through security and border control, and a car to the aircraft. Six meeting rooms in the arrivals hall, named after sky phenomena and furnished by Finnish makers, seat up to 26 people from 100 euros an hour. Finnair's business lounge and its Platinum Wing in the non Schengen area both have a sauna, and the airport train reaches Helsinki Central station in about 30 minutes.
The Jetflite change
Jetflite, the Helsinki charter company whose FBO stood about 100 metres from the business terminal, announced that it would end its operations on 30 September 2026. From October 2026 the Finavia Business Flight Center is the main home of business aviation at the airport, and we plan every flight around it.
Services on request
The Business Flight Center books hotels, cars and helicopters, arranges laundry for crews and concierge help for passengers, and can meet special requests with notice. Helicopter shuttles to Tallinn and to Finnish cities also start from the same address. Sustainable aviation fuel from Neste, the Finnish producer, has been offered to business aircraft at Helsinki since 2021, and operators can ask for it when they order fuel.
Leaving Helsinki
Arrive 30 to 45 minutes before the departure slot. Security screening and passport control take place in the terminal, and in winter the time for de icing is added before the aircraft taxies out.

How we plan a Helsinki flight

  • Slot and permission. As soon as the aircraft is confirmed, the operator asks the Business Flight Center for the arrival and departure slots and the prior permission the airport requires.
  • One terminal for everything. Customs, border checks and baggage are handled in the Business Flight Center, so we pass your names and passport details to it in advance.
  • Winter margin. From November to March we add de icing time and keep Tampere or Turku as the alternate.
  • Onward travel. We book the car, the train, the ferry to Tallinn or the onward flight to Lapland together with the jet.
  • Time difference. Every time we quote for Helsinki is local Finnish time, two hours ahead of London.

Business terminal lounge for private passengers at Helsinki-Vantaa

Four things to know before booking Helsinki

These points apply to nearly every private flight to Helsinki, and we check each of them before the aircraft is confirmed.

A slot, even at night
Helsinki-Vantaa is fully coordinated around the clock. The slot must be requested at least three hours ahead, and in Slush week or on a summer Friday it is wise to ask much earlier.
EU customs rules
Finland is in the EU, so arrivals from Britain face EU limits: 1 litre of spirits, 4 litres of wine and 16 litres of beer, and no meat or dairy products from the UK.
Winter conditions
From November to March expect snow, frost and short days, with about six hours of daylight in December. The airport copes well, but de icing adds time to every departure.
Pets only via Helsinki
Dogs and cats flying in from Britain must land at Helsinki-Vantaa, the only Finnish airport where their papers can be inspected, so a pet cannot fly straight from Britain to Lapland.

From the airport to Helsinki, the coast and the Baltic

The city centre is close to the airport, and the Ring Rail line links the terminal with the central station. Drive times in the table assume a car leaving the business terminal outside the rush hour.

Destination By car from the airport Notes
Helsinki city centre and the Esplanadi About 25 to 30 minutes The Market Square, the harbour, the Hotel Kämp and the main shopping streets
Keilaniemi and Otaniemi, Espoo About 25 minutes Head offices of large Finnish companies and the Aalto University campus
Porvoo About 40 minutes The second oldest town in Finland, with wooden houses along the river
Nuuksio National Park About 40 minutes Forest, lakes and lakeside saunas close to the capital
Hanko About 1h 45m The southernmost town in Finland, with villas and a summer harbour
Turku About 2 hours The former capital and the gateway to the archipelago of south west Finland
Tallinn About 2h 15m by ferry Fast ferries leave the city harbours several times a day, or a helicopter crosses the Gulf of Finland in a fraction of the time

For Lapland the quickest route is a second short flight: a jet from Helsinki reaches Rovaniemi, about 700 kilometres to the north, in about 1h 20m. Some visitors fly straight from Britain to Lapland and spend a night or two in Helsinki on the way home, which suits an empty leg in either direction.

What else you pay on a Finnish trip

Next to the cost of the aircraft, the other charges on a flight to Helsinki are modest, and most of them are already built into the operator's quote.

Band A
for UK Air Passenger Duty on jets of 5.7 tonnes or more, because Helsinki lies well under 2,000 miles from London
No passenger tax
Finland charges no air passenger tax of its own, so the Finnish side adds only airport and handling fees
42 euros
for each passenger departing from the Business Flight Center under Finavia's 2026 tariff, plus a security charge of 6.27 euros
De icing
added on cold days, mostly from November to March, at 0.95 euros a litre of fluid on the remote pad or 1.95 euros at the stand

UK Air Passenger Duty falls due when you leave the UK. Up to 31 March 2027, Band A costs 32 GBP per passenger on aircraft from 5.7 to 20 tonnes and 142 GBP per passenger on heavier jets. The following tax year brings one rate for every private jet of 5.7 tonnes and above: 146.63 GBP for each passenger. Aircraft under 5.7 tonnes are exempt, as are flights from Jersey and Guernsey, which lie outside the duty. Scotland then replaces APD with its own Air Departure Tax for flights leaving Aberdeen, Edinburgh or Glasgow, and the Scottish Government plans a private jet supplement from April 2028.

Tampere, Turku, Tallinn and the other airports near Helsinki

Helsinki-Vantaa handles almost every private flight to the capital region. These are the airports we use as alternates, or for a trip that starts or ends elsewhere.

Helsinki-Vantaa, EFHK. The main airport, with three long runways, the Business Flight Center and customs at any hour.
Tampere-Pirkkala, EFTP. Some 140 kilometres north west of Helsinki as the crow flies. Its single runway is 2,700 metres long, and as the third largest Finnish city Tampere is normally our first choice of alternate.
Turku, EFTU. About 150 kilometres to the west, with a 2,500 metre runway, close to the archipelago and the old capital.
Tallinn, EETN. Across the Gulf of Finland, about 100 kilometres to the south, with a 3,480 metre runway. It works well for a trip that combines the two capitals.

Popular routes between the UK and Helsinki, and which way they run empty

The fares listed are for an entire jet on a journey its operator is making anyway; nobody sells single seats on them. Flight times exclude the car journeys to and from each airport. Because Helsinki is almost three hours from Britain, the list uses jets with the range for the trip, from the Phenom 300 and Citation CJ3 to the Challenger 350 and Praetor 600. If you cannot change your dates, the second list near the top prices the same aircraft as an ordinary charter.

Border and customs rules for Finland

Finland is a member of the EU, its customs union and Schengen, so British travellers meet the standard EU rules for arrivals from outside the Union. These are the ones that matter on a private flight.

  • Passport. For entry to Finland a British passport needs an issue date within the past ten years and at least three months of validity beyond your planned departure from Schengen.
  • 90 days in 180. Time spent in Finland counts together with every other Schengen country, and British visitors may stay up to 90 days in any rolling 180 day period.
  • EES. The EU entry and exit system takes fingerprints and a photograph at your first border check in Finland; children under 12 give only a photograph.
  • Alcohol. Arriving from Britain, each adult may bring 16 litres of beer and 4 litres of still wine, plus either 1 litre of spirits over 22 per cent or 2 litres of drinks up to 22 per cent. Nobody under 18 may bring alcohol, and nobody under 20 may bring drinks over 22 per cent.
  • Tobacco and goods. The EU allowance covers 200 cigarettes and other goods worth up to 430 euros for air travellers.
  • Food. Meat, milk and products made from them may not be brought into the EU from the UK, so leave sandwiches, cheese and ham at home.
  • Money. Finland uses the euro; cards and contactless payment are accepted almost everywhere, and cash of 10,000 euros or more must be declared on arrival.
  • Back in the UK. On a private flight home, each adult can carry up to 270 GBP of shopping and gifts tax free, with drink limits of 42 litres of beer, 18 of wine and 4 of spirits, and 200 cigarettes. From 1 October 2026 the UK groups cider with beer and sparkling wine with still wine for these limits.

Three situations, three answers

A day of meetings in Espoo
Leave London at breakfast, land in Helsinki early in the afternoon local time, spend the rest of the day in Keilaniemi or the city, and fly home the next morning. At almost three hours each way the jet rarely waits, so a released sector in either direction saves the most.
Helsinki and Tallinn together
Land in Helsinki, spend two days in the city, take the ferry or a helicopter across the Gulf of Finland, and fly home from Tallinn. Two airports give an empty leg twice the chance of matching your dates.
The city and Lapland
Fly from Britain to Rovaniemi or Kittilä for the snow, then finish with two nights in Helsinki and fly home from there. Aircraft positioning north and south in the Lapland season often fit one of the two legs.

Flying to Finland with a dog or cat

A British dog or cat must be microchipped, vaccinated against rabies at least 21 days before travel and accompanied by an animal health certificate, which an official vet signs no more than 10 days before arrival. By air it may enter Finland only at Helsinki-Vantaa, where its papers are inspected on arrival; the Finnish Food Authority asks owners to email scans of the documents to its airport office before departure. Finland also insists that a vet deworms every dog against Echinococcus between one and five days before it arrives.

Dog in the cabin of a private jet to Helsinki

The animal rides in the cabin beside you for the whole flight. Coming home is simpler, because Britain does not require a tapeworm treatment for dogs arriving directly from Finland, although the aircraft must still be operated by a company approved to carry pets into Britain. Tell us about any pet when you first enquire, as some operators do not accept animals.

Private jets to Helsinki: frequently asked questions

Which airport serves Helsinki for private jets?
Helsinki-Vantaa, HEL, about 17 kilometres north of the city centre, where business aircraft use the Finavia Business Flight Center. If the weather closes in, crews divert to Tampere or Turku.
What is the flying time from Britain to Helsinki?
About 2h 35m from Aberdeen, 2h 45m to 2h 55m from Edinburgh, Newcastle, Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, London and Biggin Hill, 3h 00m to 3h 10m from Farnborough, Oxford, Southampton, Bristol, Belfast, Cardiff and Dublin, and about 3h 20m from Jersey.
Is there a private terminal at Helsinki Airport?
Yes. The Business Flight Center, run by Finavia, has its own lounges, customs, passport control and security screening, and it is open 24 hours a day.
Do we need a slot to fly privately to Helsinki?
Yes. Helsinki-Vantaa is fully coordinated, and the slot must be requested at least three hours before the flight; we ask for it as soon as the aircraft is confirmed.
Can a private jet land in Helsinki at night?
Yes. The airport, customs and passport control work around the clock, so a late evening or early morning arrival from Britain needs no special arrangement.
What does an empty leg to Helsinki cost?
Our list starts at about 5,700 GBP for a Citation CJ3 flying from Aberdeen, and at about 6,100 GBP for a Citation CJ4 heading from Helsinki to Bristol, in each case for the whole aircraft. Booked as ordinary charters, the same flights cost roughly 13,500 GBP to 28,800 GBP.
Does Finland charge a departure tax on private flights?
No. Finland has no air passenger tax, although Finavia's airport charges include 42 euros for each passenger leaving from the Business Flight Center. On flights from the UK, British Air Passenger Duty applies to jets of 5.7 tonnes or more.
Can we continue to Lapland from Helsinki?
Yes. A jet flies from Helsinki to Rovaniemi in about 1h 20m, and Kittilä and Ivalo are only a little further. We can plan both legs together.
Do British visitors need a visa for Finland?
No. On a British passport you can stay in the Schengen countries, Finland included, for up to 90 days within any 180 without a visa.
When are empty legs to Helsinki most common?
On weekday business routes to London all year, around Slush in November, on summer weekends and during the Lapland season from December to March.
And if nothing is released for my dates?
Give us your preferred dates, the number of passengers and your plans after Helsinki. Business travel keeps jets moving between Britain and Finland every week, so a suitable sector often appears within days.

Call +44 7857 574938 , message the same number on WhatsApp , or write to flight@empty-leg.co.uk . Say whether you are travelling for work in Helsinki, for a break on the coast or on towards Lapland, and add the dates, the number of travellers, how much luggage you have and whether a pet is coming. We then send the suitable sectors with the full charter fare beside each, together with our plan for the slot, the Business Flight Center and the drive or flight onwards.
