Ski flights to the Alps by private jet

The Alps are the single best place in Europe to use an empty leg, and the reason is simple arithmetic. From December to March aircraft fly into Geneva, Chambery, Sion and Salzburg full of skiers and fly home again with nobody on board. Every one of those return sectors is for sale, and the same thing happens in reverse at the end of the week.

Learn which way the traffic is pointing and a midsize jet for eight starts to look like a sensible way to move a chalet party. This page sets out the airports, the prices, the weeks worth targeting and the baggage question that catches out more ski charters than anything else.

Land at midday. On the slopes by three.
Twenty minutes through a private terminal, skis straight into the car, no baggage carousel and no Saturday queue at the hire desk.

Why the Alps produce so many empty legs

Alpine traffic is the most concentrated seasonal movement in European business aviation, and it runs to a rhythm you can plan around.

Saturdays fill, Sundays empty
Chalet weeks start and end on a Saturday, so that is when aircraft go out loaded. What comes back on Saturday evening and Sunday is very often empty, which is why northbound sectors are consistently the best priced of the week.
Aircraft reposition for the season
In late November and early December operators move aircraft towards the Alps, and in April they move them back out again. Those transfer flights carry nobody and are released cheaply, which makes the shoulder weeks the best value of the winter in both directions.
Midweek is a different market
Tuesday to Thursday the Alpine airports are quiet and operators have aircraft sitting on the ramp. If you can travel midweek, you are competing with almost nobody and prices reflect it.
Peak weeks are the exception
Christmas, New Year and February half term sell in both directions at full price, and Alpine slots run out. In those weeks book a standard charter early rather than wait for a sector that will not appear.

The Alpine airports, and which resort each one serves

Choosing the airport matters more here than anywhere else in Europe, because the transfer can easily take longer than the flight.

Airport Resorts it serves Transfer Worth knowing
Geneva
GVA
Verbier, Chamonix, Megeve, Courchevel, Meribel, Val d'Isere, Tignes, Zermatt, Gstaad 1 to 2 hours by road for the nearer resorts, 2h 15m to 3 hours to Courchevel, 20 to 45 minutes by helicopter Serves the widest choice of resorts and produces the most empty legs. Saturday afternoons are congested both in the air and in the valley
Chambery
CMF
Courchevel, Meribel, Val Thorens, La Plagne, Les Arcs 1h 15m to 1h 45m by road to Courchevel, 20 to 25 minutes by helicopter The closest field to the Three Valleys that takes jets, and it runs as a ski airport from December to April. Fewer aircraft and tighter slots than Geneva
Sion
SIR
Verbier, Crans-Montana, Zermatt 45 minutes to an hour by road to Verbier, about 8 minutes by helicopter to Le Chable A mountain airport that needs crews qualified for it, and parking is limited in high season
Grenoble
GNB
Alpe d'Huez, Les Deux Alpes and the rest of the Oisans 1h 40m or more by road to Alpe d'Huez, about 25 minutes by helicopter A useful alternative when Chambery is full, and often cheaper on handling
Annecy
NCY
Megeve, La Clusaz, Chamonix Under an hour to Megeve Small and pretty, with a shorter runway than Geneva, and worth asking about when Geneva is busy
Innsbruck and Salzburg
INN, SZG
St Anton, Lech, Ischgl, Kitzbuhel, Saalbach 30 minutes to 1 hour 30 by road Innsbruck sits in a valley and its approach requires specifically qualified crews, which narrows the aircraft available on any given day
Samedan
SMV
St Moritz, Engadin About 10 minutes by road to St Moritz Sits above 1,700 metres, which puts altitude performance limits on the aircraft that can use it. Zurich is the fallback when conditions close it

Courchevel altiport, the honest version

Everyone has seen the photographs, so it is worth saying plainly: you will almost certainly not be landing a chartered jet at Courchevel.

The runway is 537 metres long, it climbs uphill at a severe gradient, it sits at roughly 2,000 metres of altitude and it ends in a mountain face, which means there is no go around. French authorities restrict commercially chartered fixed wing access accordingly. In practice the altiport is used by helicopters, by a small number of specifically qualified turboprop operators, and by owners flying their own aircraft.

What we can arrange is the version that actually works: a jet into Chambery or Geneva, then a helicopter that puts you on the altiport in twenty to forty five minutes, depending on which of the two you land at. If landing in the resort itself genuinely matters to you, a qualified turboprop charter is the route, and we will tell you what it costs rather than pretending a midsize jet can do it.

What a ski flight costs

Guide prices for the whole aircraft in pounds, one way from London. The empty leg column is what a repositioning sector typically starts at when one exists on the route.

Route Aircraft Seats Time Empty leg from Charter from
London to Geneva Citation Latitude 9 1h 35m 5,300 GBP 12,600 GBP
London to Chambery Citation XLS+ 8 1h 40m 5,300 GBP 12,600 GBP

London to Zurich Citation XLS+ 8 1h 35m 5,000 GBP 11,900 GBP

London to Salzburg Challenger 300 9 1h 55m 7,600 GBP 18,100 GBP

Divide by the party and the comparison becomes obvious. A Latitude to Geneva at 5,300 GBP is around 589 GBP a head with nine on board, which is inside the range of a flexible airline ticket on a Saturday in February, on an aircraft nobody else is on, from a terminal you walk through in twenty minutes.

Two winter costs sit outside the aircraft price and appear as their own lines. De icing, charged by the handling agent at cost and only when it is needed, which in January is most mornings. And a helicopter transfer if you want one, typically 1,300 to 2,600 GBP for the aircraft rather than per person.

Watch your route on this corridor

Alpine sectors are taken within hours in season. Tell us the resort, the week and how many of you there are, and we will watch the airports that serve it, including the ones you had not thought of.

When to fly, and when to book

Period What the market does What to do
Late November to mid December Aircraft reposition into the Alps for the season and fly out empty afterwards Deep discounts and plenty of choice. Register the route and wait
Christmas and New Year Full in both directions, Alpine slots sell out Book a standard charter in October. Waiting will not work
January Quietest month of the season, heavy northbound repositioning Strong odds on a sector, particularly midweek
February half term The busiest fortnight of the winter Charter, booked well ahead, and expect peak pricing
March Strong snow, thinner demand, plenty of aircraft in position Excellent odds on a sector, both ways
April Aircraft leave the Alps for the Mediterranean season Cheap sectors out of the mountains, if you can be flexible

Helicopter transfer to the resort

On a Saturday in February the road from Geneva into the Three Valleys can take longer than the flight from London. A helicopter turns that into thirty to forty five minutes, and on the busiest weeks it is the difference between skiing on arrival day and not.

Leg By helicopter By road Lands at
Geneva to Courchevel 30 to 45 minutes 2h 15m to 3h, more on a Saturday Courchevel altiport, ten minutes from the resort centre
Chambery to Courchevel 20 to 25 minutes 1h 15m to 1h 45m Courchevel altiport
Geneva to Verbier 25 to 40 minutes about 2 hours Le Chable, then ten minutes by funicular or road
Sion to Verbier about 8 minutes 45 minutes to 1 hour Le Chable
Geneva to Megeve 20 to 30 minutes about 1h 10m Megeve altiport
Samedan to St Moritz a few minutes about 10 minutes The road is quick here anyway, so a helicopter is rarely worth booking

What it costs
Typically 1,300 to 2,600 GBP for the helicopter one way, not per person. On a party of six that is a couple of hundred pounds a head to remove two hours of mountain road, which is why most groups take it in peak weeks and skip it in March.
How many fit
Four to six passengers on the machines used in the Alps, so a party of eight means two rotations or two aircraft. We price both rather than assume.
Skis do not always come with you
Helicopter hold space is limited and long ski bags often travel up by road while you fly. It is not a problem if you know in advance and a genuine irritation if you do not, so we settle it when we quote.
Weather can stop it
Mountain helicopter flying needs visibility. If cloud sits in the valley the transfer does not go, so every booking we make has a road plan behind it and a driver who knows the flight is doubtful before you land.

We book the helicopter as part of the same journey rather than leaving you to find one at the FBO. Timings are coordinated with the jet, so a delay on the flight moves the helicopter rather than losing it.

Skis, boards and the baggage question

This is where most ski charters go wrong, and it happens before anyone looks at a price. Ski bags are long, boot bags are heavy, and a light jet hold is smaller than people imagine.

Light jets
Fine for four people with skis, tight for six, and some types will not take a full length ski bag at all. Always worth confirming against the specific aircraft rather than the class.
Midsize and above
The comfortable answer for a full party with equipment. On a Saturday transfer with eight people and eight sets of skis, this is the class to ask for and it is where most Alpine empty legs sit anyway.
Hiring at the resort
If the sector you want is perfect apart from the hold, hiring skis and carrying only boots usually solves it. We will say when that trade is worth making rather than let you lose the flight.

How much luggage each aircraft actually takes

Published hold volumes for the types that fly Alpine routes most often. Treat them as a guide: the figure varies between individual aircraft and configurations, and volume alone does not decide it.

Aircraft Class Seats Hold, approx Cubic feet What that means with skis
Pilatus PC-12 Turboprop 8 1.1 m3 40 The published figure understates it. A wide cargo door and a long compartment take skis without argument, which is why the type flies so much Alpine work
King Air 350 Turboprop 8 2.0 m3 71 Comfortable for a full party with equipment
HondaJet Very light 5 1.8 m3 66 Skis usually fit, but five people's cases plus boots will not
Citation CJ2+ Light 6 1.8 m3 65 Four with skis is comfortable, six is not
Citation CJ3 Light 7 2.1 m3 74 Usually takes six sets of skis and soft bags
Phenom 300 Light 7 2.1 m3 74 One of the better holds in the light class
Learjet 75 Light to midsize 8 1.8 m3 65 Adequate rather than generous for its cabin size
Citation XLS+ Midsize 8 2.3 m3 80 The classic ski jet. Eight people with skis works
Hawker 900XP Midsize 8 1.4 m3 49 Big cabin, small hold. The most common mismatch in ski charter
Citation Latitude Midsize 9 3.6 m3 127 Generous, and easy to load through a wide door
Challenger 350 Super midsize 9 3.0 m3 106 Takes a full party with boards and boot bags
Praetor 600 Super midsize 9 4.4 m3 155 Best hold in its class by some distance
Legacy 650 Heavy 13 6.8 m3 240 Anything you care to bring
Global 6000 Ultra long range 13 5.5 m3 195 Anything you care to bring

Three things the numbers do not show, and they are usually what settles the question.

  • Length beats volume. A ski bag is 170 to 190 centimetres. Some holds are roomy but short, and a compartment that swallows eight soft cases will refuse a single pair of 185s. We check the actual compartment, not the class.
  • Weight is a real limit. Every aircraft has a maximum take off weight, and on a short Alpine runway at altitude the margin shrinks. Eight passengers, eight sets of skis and a full fuel load are not always possible at the same time.
  • The cabin is not spare hold. Loose bags cannot sit in the aisle for take off and landing. What does not fit in the compartment stays behind.

Send us what you are carrying, in bags rather than in kilos, and we will confirm it against the specific aircraft before anything is booked. It takes one message and it prevents the only ski charter problem that cannot be fixed on the day.

Questions about flying to the Alps

    • Can we land at the resort itself?
    • By helicopter, yes, and at Courchevel and Megeve that is the normal way to arrive. By chartered jet, almost never. Altiports are short, steep and high, and access for commercial charter is restricted to a small number of specifically qualified operators flying turboprops.

The practical route is a jet to Chambery or Geneva and a helicopter for the last stretch, which we arrange as one journey.

    • Is a private flight worth it for a week's skiing?
    • For two people, rarely. For six or eight with equipment it often is, because the aircraft costs the same whoever is on it, and a Saturday in the Alps is precisely when scheduled travel is at its worst: full flights, long queues at baggage reclaim and a transfer that starts hours later than it should.

Send us the party size and we will run the comparison against airline fares on your dates rather than ask you to take it on trust.

    • What happens if the weather closes the airport?
    • Alpine fields are weather sensitive and a diversion is always possible, particularly at the mountain airports. Operators plan alternates as a matter of course, most often Geneva, Lyon or Zurich, and we will tell you what the alternate is before you fly rather than after.

If your arrival is genuinely time critical, that is an argument for a larger airport and a longer road transfer rather than the shortest possible drive.

    • Can we fly out and come back on empty legs?
    • Sometimes, and in the shoulder weeks quite often, though they will usually be different aircraft and different operators. In peak weeks the honest answer is no.

The pattern that works most reliably is an empty leg in the direction the aircraft are already going and a standard charter for the other half, which still removes a large share of the cost of chartering both.

    • Can our dog come?
    • Yes, in the cabin. Flying out of Britain the rules that matter are the destination country's, and Alpine sectors are straightforward in that direction. Coming back into Great Britain the operator and the route have to be approved for animals, which narrows the options considerably.

Tell us at the enquiry stage and we will filter on it from the start.
