Empty leg flights to and from Oslo

Oslo is the Norwegian capital and the home of the country's energy, shipping and finance companies, set at the head of the Oslofjord with forests and ski slopes on its doorstep. Private flights use Oslo Airport Gardermoen, code OSL, about 35 kilometres north east of the centre in a straight line and roughly 50 by road, where business jets have their own general aviation terminal on the west side of the airfield. A midsize jet from London needs about 2h 05m, and from Aberdeen about 1h 35m.

Gardermoen is a slot coordinated airport on the Schengen border, and winter brings real snow. Sandefjord Torp, 110 kilometres to the south, is the second option for the coast and the south of Norway.

Oslo sectors available today

Our first list holds every sector into or out of Oslo Gardermoen; when Gardermoen is quiet, it adds flights at Sandefjord Torp and Gothenburg Landvetter instead. Directly beneath, a second list prices the same aircraft as a full charter for dates you choose, which makes the saving on each empty leg easy to judge.

Ask us what is available at Oslo right now.

This board refreshes through the day as operators release sectors, and it shows only part of the market: a large share of repositioning flights never reach a public list at all. Check back shortly, or tell us your route and dates and we will look at what operators are holding at this moment.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.

Set up an alert for Oslo

Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up between the UK and Oslo.

Please fill in both the departure and the arrival city.

Nothing is stored on this site. The button opens a chat with the message already written, and you send it yourself. We reply during office hours, 07:00 to 23:00, and check messages outside them too.

Why Oslo produces empty legs

Oslo sits roughly two hours from most British airports, a distance at which few operators pay a crew to wait. Business trips of a day or two and ski and fjord holidays of a week both leave jets flying one way without passengers.

Energy, shipping and investment
Equinor, Aker and Telenor have large offices at Fornebu, and DNB, Norsk Hydro, Yara and the shipowners of the capital keep their head offices in and around the city, as does the team that runs Norway's sovereign wealth fund. Meetings with them bring a steady flow of weekday flights from London and Aberdeen.
The North Sea link
Aberdeen and Oslo share the offshore oil and gas industry, and the short hop between them often runs empty in one direction after a team has been dropped off.
Mountains in winter
From December to April skiers fly in for Hafjell, Kvitfjell, Trysil and Hemsedal. They stay a week, so the aircraft that brought them usually flies home and a second one comes to collect them.
Summer by the fjord
From June to August the islands of the Oslofjord and the coastal towns of the south fill with holiday homes, and weekend trips produce empty flights in both directions, many of them from Torp.
Nobel week and the autumn calendar
Oslo Innovation Week in October, the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony on 10 December and a busy conference season bring short peaks of private arrivals followed by a wave of departures.

Empty sectors turn up most reliably between Oslo and London, Aberdeen or the Scottish Central Belt on working days, while holiday traffic adds the most in February, March and July. Late November and the first week of January are the quietest periods.

Business jet on the apron at Oslo Gardermoen

Oslo Airport Gardermoen in detail

Gardermoen replaced the old city airport at Fornebu on 8 October 1998, on the site of a military air station that still houses the transport squadron of the Royal Norwegian Air Force. It is the second busiest airport in the Nordic countries and the main base of SAS and Norwegian in Norway. The airport sits on a large groundwater reservoir, so the use of chemicals for de icing is strictly controlled.

Codes OSL (IATA) and ENGM (ICAO)
Location Gardermoen, in Ullensaker, about 35 kilometres north east of Oslo in a straight line and about 50 by road
Opened 8 October 1998, replacing Fornebu
Runways Two parallel runways, 01L/19R of 3,600 metres and 01R/19L of 2,950 metres, both 45 metres wide; elevation 208 metres
Operator Avinor, the state company that runs most Norwegian airports
Traffic About 27.1 million passengers in 2025, making it the second busiest airport in the Nordic region after Copenhagen
Business jets The King Air B200, the Citation Latitude and the Citation XLS were the business aircraft seen most often at Gardermoen in 2025, among 6,852 business aviation movements
Slots A fully coordinated, level 3 airport: general and business aviation flights need a slot from Nordic Airport Coordination
Night rules Between 23:00 and 05:30 UTC, midnight to 06:30 local time in winter, aircraft certified above 88 EPNdB may not depart; most modern business jets are quieter than that, and we check each type
Customs Norwegian Customs clears air passengers at Gardermoen around the clock
Business terminal The general aviation terminal on the west side of the airfield, Hans Gaarders veg, home to Access Oslo and Sundt Air Executive Handling
Services Jet A1 from Air BP and Shell, de icing, hangar space, catering, cars and hotels through the handlers

For crews Gardermoen is a big, well equipped airport, but its inland position brings cold winters, freezing fog and heavy snowfalls from November to March, when de icing can add half an hour to a departure. The slot is the other planning point. We request it as soon as the aircraft is confirmed, keep Torp or Gothenburg Landvetter as the alternate, and use Torp directly when the passengers are heading for the south coast.

Private jet cabin on a flight to Oslo

Arriving in Oslo by private jet: the GA terminal, lounges and formalities

At Gardermoen private passengers never enter the main terminal. Business aircraft park by a separate general aviation terminal on the west side, where two executive handlers run their own lounges.

The general aviation terminal
A separate building on the western edge of the airfield, reached from Hans Gaarders veg, about 35 to 45 minutes from central Oslo outside the rush hour. Aircraft park a few steps from the door, well away from the airline terminal and its queues.
Access Oslo
Access Oslo, certified under IS-BAH, is open around the clock with VIP and crew lounges, free internet, a conference room and snooze rooms where crews can sleep. The walk from aircraft to car is about 100 metres. Access Oslo also arranges catering, hangar space and cars, and runs sister FBOs at Torp and Bergen.
Sundt Air Executive Handling
Sundt Air, a Norwegian aviation company based at Gardermoen, runs the second FBO in the same terminal, with VIP passenger and crew lounges, VIP catering, free parking for guests who drive in and a 24 hour desk. It has another FBO at Stavanger.
Police and customs at the GA terminal
Flights from Britain cross the Schengen border on landing. The handler escorts you through the police and customs checks, and the EES takes fingerprints and a photograph at your first entry. Customs at Gardermoen works around the clock.
Bags straight to the car
The ground crew moves your luggage from the hold to the car and back again on departure, with screening done in the terminal and no airline desk anywhere. Skis, boot bags and snowboards travel best in a midsize jet; tell us how many there are when you book.
Meals for the journey
The lounges offer coffee, soft drinks and light snacks rather than meals. Catering for the flight, from Norwegian salmon to a full hot menu, is ordered through the handler a day ahead: Sundt Air offers its own VIP catering, and Access Oslo works with partner kitchens.
Winter at Gardermoen
Snow, ice and freezing fog are common from November to March. The airport clears snow quickly, but de icing fluid is used sparingly to protect the groundwater, so we allow extra time before a winter departure.
Avinor VIP house
For guests on airline flights or larger charters, Avinor runs a small VIP terminal of its own inside the security fence beside the main terminal. Cars pull up at the door, a host meets the party, security and passport checks are private, and guests wait in private suites with a snack buffet, dishes from an à la carte menu and showers until a car takes them to the aircraft. It costs 6,250 kroner per adult, children under 18 go free, and it must be booked and paid in advance.
Friends flying with an airline
Anyone travelling with an airline uses the main terminal, extended in 2017 with a new pier of 11 gates. The OSL Lounge by gate E2 sells entry to any international passenger for 445 kroner, the SAS lounges have showers, and the terminal has its own Radisson Blu hotel. The Flytoget express reaches Oslo Central in about 20 minutes.
Torp as a second base
Sandefjord Torp, about 110 kilometres south of Oslo, has a 2,989 metre runway and an Access Oslo FBO renovated in 2024, with a private VIP lounge and direct access to the aircraft. It saves time for trips to Vestfold, Telemark and the south coast.
Your departure
Arrive at the GA terminal half an hour before the slot, a little earlier in winter. The handler takes care of screening, passports and bags, and in snow it books de icing before you reach the aircraft.

How we plan an Oslo flight

  • Gardermoen or Torp. We match the airport to where you are going: Gardermoen for Oslo and the mountains, Torp for the coast and the south.
  • Slots. Gardermoen slots for both directions are requested on the day the jet is confirmed.
  • The handler. We choose Access Oslo or Sundt Air according to the lounge, catering and timing the trip needs.
  • Winter time. From November to March we build in de icing and a margin for snow.
  • Pets. A flight with a dog or cat goes to Gardermoen, the only Norwegian airport open to pets from Britain, and we notify the food authority two days ahead.
  • Ski kit and cars. We confirm the luggage space for skis and book a car or minibus large enough for the party and the equipment.

Four things to know before booking Oslo

These four points come up on nearly every Oslo trip, and we settle them before any aircraft is confirmed.

Distance from the city
Gardermoen is a 45 minute drive from Aker Brygge, longer in the evening rush, so allow for it in the day's plan or take the express train.
A slot at any hour
Every private movement at Gardermoen is coordinated, and at weekends in the ski season the popular times go early.
Low duty free limits
Norway, outside the EU, lets visitors bring only a litre of spirits, a litre and a half of wine and two litres of beer without duty.
Real winters
Snow and frost are normal from November to March, so a flexible departure time and an alternate airport are part of every winter plan.

From the airport to Oslo, the mountains and the fjord

Oslo itself is under an hour away, while the main ski areas lie between 1h 45m and 3 hours away by road. Drive times assume a car leaving the GA terminal away from the rush hour.

Destination By car from Gardermoen Notes
Aker Brygge and the city centre About 45 minutes The harbour front, the Opera House and the main hotels
Fornebu and Lysaker About 50 minutes Business district on the site of the old airport, home to Equinor, Aker and Telenor offices
Holmenkollen About 50 minutes The ski jump, the ski museum and views over the Oslofjord
Hafjell and Lillehammer About 1h 45m The 1994 Olympic slopes and family ski resorts
Trysil About 2h 30m Norway's largest ski resort, near the Swedish border
Hemsedal About 3 hours Steep skiing and lodges in the mountains west of Oslo

For Hemsedal or Geilo a helicopter saves most of the drive when the weather allows; the old mountain airport at Fagernes lost its airline service in 2018 and is now used mainly by a flying club. For the summer coast, Torp is closer to Kragerø, Tjøme and the islands of Vestfold than Gardermoen is.

What else you pay on a trip to Oslo

The charges beyond the aircraft itself are modest on an Oslo flight, and the operator usually quotes them together with the jet.

Band A
for UK Air Passenger Duty on jets of 5.7 tonnes or more, since Oslo is well within 2,000 miles of London
61 kroner
Norwegian passenger tax per person in 2026 on a flight leaving Norway for a destination in Europe
Handling
charged by Access Oslo or Sundt Air for the lounge, the checks, the bags and the car at the aircraft
De icing
added on frosty days, mostly from November to March, priced by the fluid used

British Air Passenger Duty is due on departures from the UK in jets of 5.7 tonnes or more. For the year to 31 March 2027, Band A is 32 GBP for each passenger on an aircraft of 5.7 to 20 tonnes and 142 GBP on heavier jets; from April 2027 every private jet of 5.7 tonnes or more pays a single rate of 146.63 GBP per passenger. Jets under the 5.7 tonne line, the Citation M2 and CJ2 among them, are free of the duty, and so are the Channel Islands. Scotland takes over the tax on its own departures in April 2027 and has promised a private jet surcharge on top.

Torp, Gothenburg, Stavanger and the other airports near Oslo

Gardermoen takes almost all private traffic to Oslo. The list below shows where crews divert to and where a trip may begin or end instead.

Oslo Gardermoen, ENGM. The capital's airport, with two long runways, a GA terminal, two executive handlers and customs at any hour.
Sandefjord Torp, ENTO. About 110 kilometres south of Oslo, with a 2,989 metre runway and an executive FBO, handy for Vestfold and the south coast.
Stavanger Sola, ENZV. On the west coast, about 300 kilometres from Oslo, with a Sundt Air FBO; useful for a trip that combines Oslo with the oil capital or the fjords.
Gothenburg Landvetter, ESGG. About 290 kilometres to the south in Sweden, the usual alternate when fog or snow closes both Norwegian options.

Popular routes between the UK and Oslo, and which way they run empty

Each price in the table is for the entire aircraft on a flight that would operate in any case; no seats are sold individually. Times are for the flight only, not the drive to and from each airport. Because Oslo is about two hours from Britain, the list covers light jets such as the Citation M2 and CJ2 up to the Challenger 350. For dates that cannot change, the second list near the top shows each aircraft as a full charter.

Border and customs rules for Norway

Norway takes part in Schengen but stays outside the EU customs union, so passports are checked on Schengen rules while goods follow Norway's own, much stricter, limits. For a private flight from Britain these are the rules to know.

  • Passport. A British passport used to enter Norway needs to be under ten years old on arrival and to remain valid for three further months after your last day in Schengen.
  • 90 days in 180. Norway counts as part of the Schengen area, so days spent there and in any other Schengen state share a single limit of 90 in every 180.
  • EES. On the first crossing the Norwegian police record fingerprints and a facial image in the EES, while under 12s are photographed only.
  • Alcohol. The duty free quota is 1 litre of spirits, 1.5 litres of wine and 2 litres of beer, and spirits may be exchanged for wine or beer. Drinks up to 22 per cent need an age of 18, stronger ones an age of 20.
  • Tobacco. Non residents are allowed 200 cigarettes, or 250 grams of pipe or rolling tobacco, without duty.
  • Food. Meat and dairy products from the UK need a special permit from the Norwegian Food Safety Authority, so in practice they stay at home.
  • Money. The currency is the Norwegian krone, and cards and phone payments are accepted almost everywhere, including taxis and ski lifts.
  • Back in Britain. Landing in the UK on a private aircraft, each adult may import presents and other goods worth 270 GBP free of duty, with 42 litres of beer, 18 of wine, 4 of spirits or 9 of drinks up to 22 per cent, and 200 cigarettes. When the UK categories change on 1 October 2026, cider will count towards beer and sparkling wine towards wine.

Three situations, three answers

Meetings at Fornebu and home the same day
Leave London early, land at Gardermoen mid morning local time, drive to Fornebu or the city for the day and fly back in the evening. On a trip this short the jet may wait, but a released sector on either leg still cuts the cost.
A ski week in Hafjell or Trysil
Fly in on a Saturday, drive two hours to the slopes and fly home the following Saturday. The aircraft goes home in between, so each direction can be matched with a sector someone else has released.
Oslo and the south coast
Spend two days in Oslo, drive down the fjord to a summer house near Tjøme or Kragerø, and fly home from Torp. With Gardermoen at one end and Torp at the other, there are two sets of released sectors to choose from.

Flying a dog or cat to Norway

From Britain a dog or cat needs a microchip, a rabies vaccination given at least 21 days before travel and an animal health certificate from an official vet; no blood test is needed. Norway, unlike most of Europe, also requires every dog to be wormed against Echinococcus by a vet between 24 and 120 hours before it arrives, with the treatment written on the certificate. Animals from Britain may enter Norway only through Oslo Airport or the Storskog border post in the far north, so a pet must land at Gardermoen, not Torp, and the Norwegian Food Safety Authority should be told at least 48 hours before arrival.

dog in the cabin of a private jet

Flying home is easier, because Britain waives its own tapeworm rule for dogs coming straight from Norway. On a private jet your pet travels in the cabin with you. Tell us about your pet straight away; some operators refuse animals.

Oslo by private jet: frequently asked questions

Which airport do private jets use for Oslo?
Gardermoen, code OSL, reached in about 45 minutes by car from the city; its GA terminal handles almost every business jet. For the south coast we often suggest Torp instead.
How long does a private flight from the UK to Oslo take?
About 1h 35m from Aberdeen, 1h 45m to 1h 50m from Edinburgh, Newcastle and Glasgow, 1h 55m to 2h 05m from Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, London, Oxford and Belfast, 2h 10m to 2h 15m from Farnborough, Southampton, Bristol and Dublin, and about 2h 30m from Jersey.
Is there a private terminal at Oslo Airport?
Yes. The general aviation terminal on the west side of Gardermoen houses Access Oslo and Sundt Air, each with its own VIP and crew lounges, and passengers never pass through the main terminal.
Do we need a slot for Gardermoen?
Yes. Oslo Airport is fully coordinated, and general and business aviation flights need a slot from Nordic Airport Coordination; the operator requests it when the aircraft is confirmed.
Can we land in Oslo late at night?
Yes. The airport and customs work around the clock, and only aircraft above a noise limit are barred from departing between midnight and 06:30 local time in winter. We check the aircraft type before booking.
What does an empty leg to Oslo cost?
The cheapest sectors in our table are two Citation M2 flights into Oslo, from Aberdeen at about 2,700 GBP and from Leeds at about 3,300 GBP, the price covering the entire jet. Booked outright, the same eighteen routes range from about 6,400 GBP to 21,400 GBP.
How much alcohol may we take into Norway?
Very little by European standards: the adult quota is a litre of spirits, one and a half of wine and two of beer, and anything over it is declared and taxed at the border.
Can we fly straight to the ski resorts?
Rarely: the small mountain airfields near the resorts lost their airline services years ago and are now used mainly by light aircraft. Most skiers land at Gardermoen and drive for up to three hours, and a helicopter can fly on from the airport when the weather allows.
Is a visa needed for a British traveller to Oslo?
No. On a British passport you may stay in Norway and the rest of Schengen for up to 90 days in any 180.
When are empty legs to Oslo most common?
On weekday business routes with London and Aberdeen, on Saturdays in the ski season from December to April, and on summer weekends.
And if nothing is released for my dates?
Send us your dates, the number of passengers and whether you are staying in Oslo, skiing or heading for the coast. With business jets crossing between Britain and Oslo every week, the right sector rarely takes long to appear.

Call +44 7857 574938 , message the same number on WhatsApp , or write to flight@empty-leg.co.uk . Let us know whether you are travelling for business in Oslo, for a ski week or for the summer coast, with the dates, the number of travellers, the luggage and skis, and any pet. You will get back the matching sectors, the full charter fare for each, and our view on Gardermoen or Torp, the best handler and the ground transport.
