Basel lies on the Rhine at the corner where Switzerland, France and Germany meet, and its tram lines run across two of those borders. Switzerland's third largest city is home to Roche and Novartis, two of the largest drug makers in the world, and to the Bank for International Settlements, where the world's central bankers meet, and every June it hosts Art Basel, one of the most important fairs of modern and contemporary art. It also has the Kunstmuseum, the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen, a medieval old town on the hill above the river and a carnival, Fasnacht, that UNESCO lists as intangible cultural heritage. The city keeps Central European Time, one hour ahead of the UK, and from the London airports a light jet needs roughly ninety minutes.
Private flights land at EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg, which stands on French soil 3.5 kilometres north west of the city and has been run jointly by France and Switzerland under a treaty of 1949. For every flight we settle the handler, the side of the airport, the customs papers and the car before the aircraft leaves Britain.

Basel sectors available today
The first list shows every sector currently offered into or out of EuroAirport, and when few Basel sectors are on offer it adds those at Zurich, Bern and Strasbourg, three other airports within about an hour and a half by road. Below it, a table of full charter prices for the same types of aircraft shows what each empty leg saves.
Ask us what is available at Basel right now.
This board refreshes through the day as operators release sectors, and it shows only part of the market: a large share of repositioning flights never reach a public list at all. Check back shortly, or tell us your route and dates and we will look at what operators are holding at this moment.
Sectors on this list do not touch Basel itself. They are shown because the fields are close enough that the drive rarely costs you more than waiting for the right sector does. Tell us which one interests you and we will confirm it is still open.
Prices are for the whole aircraft and are shown in pounds. Some are indicative figures worked out from the distance and the class of jet; the firm price is confirmed with the operator when you send a request.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.
Set up an alert for Basel
Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up between the UK and Basel.
Please fill in both the departure and the arrival city.
Nothing is stored on this site. The button opens a chat with the message already written, and you send it yourself. We reply during office hours, 07:00 to 23:00, and check messages outside them too.
Why jets fly empty in and out of Basel
Basel's private traffic mixes pharma executives, bankers, art collectors and aircraft visiting the big maintenance hangars at the airport, and each of these groups produces its own one way flights.
Pharma on both banks of the Rhine
Roche has its headquarters and its towers in Kleinbasel, and the Novartis Campus in St. Johann is about ten minutes from the airport. Syngenta and Lonza are also based in Basel, and the suppliers, bankers and consultants who visit these groups usually stay a day or two, so the jet that brings them often leaves without passengers.
Hangars full of business jets
Jet Aviation has maintained aircraft at Basel since 1967 and fitted out VIP cabins since 1977, with seven hangars on the airport, and AMAC Aerospace runs five more, four of them large enough for wide body airliners. Charter aircraft that come in for checks arrive and leave without passengers, and some of those positioning flights are offered as empty legs.
Art Basel in June
For four public days in June, collectors, gallerists and advisers fly in from around the world; the 2026 edition brought 290 galleries from 43 countries and territories and about 90,000 visitors from 103 countries. In past editions the airport limited most private aircraft to a stop of one hour and closed the main apron to overnight parking, so many jets drop their passengers, leave empty the same day and come back empty at the end of the fair.
Central banks and private banks
The Bank for International Settlements holds regular meetings of central bank governors in Basel, and the city's private banks, insurers and consultancies add a steady flow of short visits through the week.
Turboprops and long range jets
The types seen most often at Basel in 2025 ran from the single engine Pilatus PC-12 NG and the Citation Mustang to the long range Falcon 7X, a sign that Basel sees short hops and arrivals from other continents alike.
Tennis and the autumn fair
In late October the Swiss Indoors tennis tournament and the Herbstmesse, the city's autumn fair, run side by side and bring many visits of a day or a weekend.
On our list, Basel sectors cluster around Mondays and Fridays, the fair week in June and the second half of October. Those heading back to Britain are the most common.
EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg in detail
The first civil aircraft landed on a temporary airfield here on 2 May 1946, and the airport was inaugurated on 8 May, so it celebrated its eightieth anniversary in May 2026. The French and Swiss treaty of 1949 set the rules that still apply: the airport lies entirely in France, it is governed by a joint French and Swiss board, and a road of about 2.5 kilometres links the Swiss sector to Basel without a border check. In 2025 it handled about 9.6 million passengers, a record and 8 per cent more than in 2024. Between 15 April and 16 May 2026 the main runway was closed while its central section was rebuilt in concrete, and it reopened five days earlier than planned. A railway station at the terminal, on a new branch of the line from Strasbourg and Mulhouse to Basel, was planned for 2034 or 2035, but France froze its share of the funding in September 2025 and no new date has been set.
Codes
BSL (IATA) for the Swiss sector, MLH (IATA) for the French sector, EAP for the airport as a whole and LFSB (ICAO)
Location
On French soil in the communes of Saint-Louis, Hésingue and Blotzheim, 3.5 kilometres north west of Basel and close to both the Swiss and German borders
Operator
EuroAirport, a public body governed by a joint French and Swiss board under the treaty of 1949
Two sectors
A Swiss sector with Swiss customs and a French sector with French customs, under one roof, and a customs road of about 2.5 kilometres from the Swiss side into Basel
Main runway
15/33, 3,900 metres long and 60 metres wide, renumbered from 16/34 in 2008; its central section was rebuilt in concrete in spring 2026
Second runway
A shorter runway of about 1,800 metres
Elevation
270 metres, or 885 feet, above sea level
Business aviation hours
Private and business aircraft may land and take off from 06:00 to 21:59 local time; airliners must leave their stands by 23:00
Slots and permission
Airline schedules are facilitated at IATA Level 2, while business aircraft need no slot and no prior permission; every visiting aircraft must use a ground handler
Private terminals
Air Service Basel, with its own building in the Swiss sector, open from 06:00 to 21:00 and longer on request, and Swissport, with an executive lounge in the main terminal
Border formalities
Passports and customs are cleared in the private lounge, usually in 10 to 20 minutes
Traffic
About 9.6 million passengers in 2025, a record
For crews, EuroAirport is an easy field: a long runway with instrument landing systems at both ends, a choice of handlers and no slot to chase for a business jet. The constraints lie elsewhere. The 22:00 limit for business aircraft is stricter than the rule for airlines, the choice between the Swiss and French sides affects customs and tax, and during Art Basel the parking rules tighten. Fog in the Rhine valley can also slow a winter morning.
One airport, two countries: the Swiss and French sides
Almost everything at EuroAirport comes in two versions. The terminal has a Swiss exit and a French exit, each with its own customs officers; taxis on the Swiss side charge in francs and those on the French side in euros; and the bus to Basel leaves from one side, while the buses to Saint-Louis, Weil am Rhein and Freiburg leave from the other.
The Swiss side, code BSL
Passengers who leave on the Swiss side are in Swiss customs territory and reach the edge of Basel within minutes on the customs road. This is the natural exit for the city, the pharma campuses and the rest of Switzerland.
The French side, code MLH
The French exit leads to Saint-Louis, Mulhouse, Colmar and the rest of Alsace, and EU customs rules apply there.
Which side a private flight uses
Air Service Basel's building is in the Swiss sector, so its passengers leave towards Basel, and Alsace is then reached through the city. Swissport's private passengers pass through the main terminal, which has both exits. Tell us where you are going and we will suggest the handler that suits it.
Why the side matters for tax
France charges its passenger tax on commercial flights leaving French territory, and EuroAirport stands on French soil, but flights operated under Swiss traffic rights are exempt. The operator declares which rules apply, and our quote shows whether the tax is due.
Air Service Basel, Swissport and the private lounges
Private passengers at Basel do not queue in the main hall. Depending on the handler, they pass through Air Service Basel's own building or through Swissport's executive lounge, and in both cases a car takes them between the lounge and the aircraft.
Air Service Basel
Air Service Basel is the locally based FBO at EuroAirport, with its own building, apron and hangar in the south west of the Swiss sector. It holds Stage II of IS-BAH, the international standard for business aircraft handling, and is open seven days a week from 06:00 to 21:00, with longer hours on request. Its team handles passengers and aircraft, arranges customs clearance on site, fuels from its own truck in cooperation with AvFuel, and books hotels, limousines, hire cars, catering and local activities.
Inside the ASB building
The passenger side has a VIP lounge, where the staff look after each party's requests, and conference rooms with fast wireless internet for a meeting before or after the flight. Crews have their own lounge with a view of the apron, complimentary drinks and snacks, computers for flight planning and a snooze room.
A car to the steps and valet parking
The building has direct access to the ramp, and the Air Service Basel limousine collects passengers at the aircraft and brings them back to it. Passengers who drive themselves park privately at the building, with valet parking as standard for departures, and a shuttle runs to the main terminal for anyone continuing by airline.
Catering rather than a restaurant
Air Service Basel has no restaurant of its own. Meals for the flight are ordered through the handler with the booking, and the team arranges special catering requests if they are sent ahead.
Le Chalet, Rossopomodoro and the Skybar
If you arrive early or someone is seeing you off, the main terminal is a few minutes away by car. On the Swiss side there are Le Chalet for Swiss cooking, a Starbucks and the Hoppy indoor beer garden; on the French side there are the Minute café and the Poulaillon bakery, known for its Alsace pastries. On the fifth level, the Neapolitan Rossopomodoro on the French side and the Skybar cocktail bar on the Swiss side open onto the observation deck, which partly reopened in October 2025 and is free to visit from 06:00 to 21:00.
The Skyview Lounge
For anyone in the party flying by airline, the Skyview Lounge, run by Swissport under the Aspire brand, lies airside beside the duty free shop and serves departures both inside and outside the Schengen area, flights to Britain included. It covers about 1,700 square metres on three levels under a glass dome and opens from 05:00 to 21:00. Since its renovation in December 2024 it has a café open to all passengers, where breakfast costs 19 francs and the daily menu 27, a buffet area called View, a terrace above the apron and a bar that can be booked for meetings. Priority Pass is accepted, children under six enter free and showers cost extra.
Luggage handled by the team
Nobody waits at a carousel or a check in desk. On arrival the cases go from the hold through the customs check and into the car that meets you; on departure they are screened in the building and driven out to the aircraft with you.
Swissport and its executive lounge
Swissport handles business aircraft on the main apron and runs an Executive Aviation lounge in the terminal. Its meet and greet service, useful for anyone in the party flying by airline, costs 439 Swiss francs for a departure of up to three travellers and 54 for each extra one, with a meeting point of your choice, help at check in and with the bags, a private or fast track route through security and passport control, the lounge with drinks and appetisers and a limousine from the lounge to the aircraft. The arrival service, from the aircraft door to the lounge by limousine, costs 365 francs.
Hangars and long stays
Jet Aviation's Basel site is the group's headquarters and its largest maintenance centre. Jet Aviation, AMAC Aerospace and Air Service Basel can all offer hangar space when an aircraft has to stay, subject to availability. During Art Basel, parking beyond the main apron is negotiated directly with these companies.
The lounge counts most when the weather or the 22:00 limit changes the plan, during Art Basel week, when many aircraft arrive within hours of one another, and when part of the party continues by airline.
Arriving at Basel, step by step
With the passenger details sent ahead, a private arrival at Basel usually takes 10 to 20 minutes from the steps to the car. These are the stages; departure runs the other way.
ON THE APRON
Met on the stand
The handler's agent and car meet the aircraft on its stand and take you to the private lounge while the ramp team unloads the hold.
BORDER
Schengen entry in the lounge
Britain is outside Schengen, so officers check every passport in the private lounge on arrival. Switzerland uses the same digital Entry/Exit System as the EU: visitors entering for the first time are photographed, and those aged twelve and over also give fingerprints.
CUSTOMS
Swiss or EU rules
On the Swiss side the Swiss allowances apply, with a limit of 150 francs on the value of goods bought abroad; on the French side, those of the EU. Declare works of art, watches or samples carried for sale or for a stand.
BULKY ITEMS
Crates, cases and golf bags
Tell us about crated art, sample cases or golf bags when you book, because the smaller jets in our list have little room in the hold.
THE DRIVE
Ten minutes to Novartis
From the Swiss sector the customs road reaches Basel in minutes: the Novartis Campus is about 10 minutes away, the station and the old town about 15 and Messe Basel 15 to 20.
TIMING
Wheels up by ten
Business aircraft may not land or take off after 21:59. A dinner in town before the flight home needs a margin, and a late arrival is either planned for the next morning or routed to another airport.
TAX FREE
Swiss VAT refunded
Visitors who live abroad can reclaim the 8.1 per cent Swiss VAT on purchases of at least 300 francs per sale, a watch from the Freie Strasse for example, if customs stamp the export form during their opening hours; tell the handler the day before.
AIRLINE ONE WAY
Heathrow, Gatwick or Luton
If only one direction is private, British Airways flies from Basel to Heathrow and easyJet to Gatwick and Luton, and Swissport's meet and greet makes the airline departure almost as smooth as a private one. Self service bag drop machines have been working in the check in halls since February 2026.
What shapes a Basel trip is rarely the passenger formalities. It is the 22:00 limit for business aircraft, the choice of side and, in June, the parking rules, and we confirm all three in writing with the quote.
Five points to settle before a Basel trip
The 22:00 limit
Business and private aircraft may use EuroAirport only between 06:00 and 21:59 local time, a stricter rule than the one for airlines. An evening return is planned before the limit, or the aircraft stays overnight.
Swiss side or French side
The handler and the side of the airport decide the customs rules, the exit and whether the French passenger tax applies. We agree them with the operator before the flight.
Parking in Art Basel week
In past editions a notice to airmen limited most private aircraft to a stop of one hour during the fair and ruled out overnight parking on the main apron. Book early, and expect the aircraft to leave after the drop and come back for the return.
The French passenger tax
France charges 420 euros a passenger on a commercial jet flight to Europe, Britain included, and about half that on a turboprop, unless the flight runs under Swiss traffic rights. A positioning flight with nobody on board pays nothing.
Art, watches and samples
Anything carried for sale, for a stand or for a client counts as commercial goods at Swiss and French customs. Send us a list with values, and the handler prepares the customs papers before departure.
From the airport to the pharma campuses, the city and the Black Forest
The airport sits just north west of Basel, so the city and the pharma campuses are close, while Alsace and the Black Forest are within an hour. The times assume a driver collecting you at the private terminal at a quiet hour; rush hour on the Basel ring roads can add a good deal.

Bus 50 runs from the Swiss sector to Basel SBB every 7 to 10 minutes and takes about 20 minutes, and a taxi between the city and the airport costs about 50 francs. Swiss taxis charge fixed fares of 340 francs to Freiburg and 440 to Zurich, while on the French side a taxi to Mulhouse costs about 60 to 65 euros by day. For a private passenger, though, a driver waiting at the lounge door is simpler, and can go straight to a campus, a gallery or a hotel.
What a Basel trip costs beyond the aircraft
On top of the aircraft price, four other charges may appear: British duty when you leave the UK, the French passenger tax when you fly home, the airport's passenger charges and a city tax on each hotel night.
Outbound: UK APD
charged on departures from Britain; Switzerland and France are Band A destinations, and aircraft under 5.7 tonnes are exempt
Return: French tax
420 euros a passenger on a commercial business jet leaving French territory for Britain, unless the flight runs under Swiss traffic rights
Basel city tax
4.20 francs a night for each adult in a hotel in Basel city, with a BaselCard for free trams and buses
Airport charges
a passenger fee and an airport tax on each departure, paid by the operator and included in its quote
Since 1 March 2025 France has charged its solidarity tax on air tickets to the passengers of business aircraft with no more than 19 seats on commercial flights leaving French airports. For a jet the rate is 420 euros a passenger to a European destination, and for this tax Britain counts as one; turboprops pay about half. Because EuroAirport lies in France, the tax reaches it too, but flights operated under Swiss traffic rights are exempt, and so are flights with nobody on board, although once you buy an empty sector, its passengers count.
British duty is charged only on flights leaving the UK, and Band A covers both Switzerland and France. Jets between 5.7 and 20 tonnes are charged 32 GBP a passenger and heavier ones 142 GBP until 31 March 2027. The reform of April 2027 then extends the higher rate, set at 146.63 GBP for Band A, down to private jets of 5.7 tonnes. The PC-12, the Citation M2 and the Citation CJ2 in our price list weigh less and pay nothing. Switzerland itself has no ticket tax: a levy on flights fell with the revised CO2 law when voters rejected it in June 2021.

Zurich, Bern, Colmar and the other airports near Basel
EuroAirport is the obvious choice for Basel, but several other airports within reach take business jets and are worth knowing when Basel is full, closed for the night or simply further from where you are going.
Basel, LFSB. EuroAirport itself, with a runway of 3,900 metres, Air Service Basel and Swissport for private passengers, and business aviation hours from 06:00 to 21:59.
Zurich, LSZH. Switzerland's largest airport, about an hour and a quarter by road and 49 nautical miles away, and the usual alternate when Basel cannot be used.
Bern, LSZB. The airport of the Swiss capital at Belp, a little over an hour by road, convenient for a trip that continues to the Bernese Oberland.
Colmar Houssen, LFGA. An Alsace airfield 32 nautical miles to the north, with a runway of about 1,600 metres for smaller jets; customs must be requested 24 to 48 hours ahead.
Strasbourg, LFST. The airport at Entzheim, about an hour and a half north by road, for northern Alsace and the European Parliament.
Basel routes from Britain and Ireland, and the direction they usually fly empty
Every figure in the table is for the whole aircraft, however many passengers travel, and the times are measured from take off to landing. At about 740 kilometres from London, Basel is within easy nonstop reach of every airport in the table, which runs from a single engine PC-12 back to Biggin Hill up to a Gulfstream G450 for a party of collectors in June. A flight home may also carry the French passenger tax, depending on the side it leaves from. With fixed dates in mind, set these figures against the charter prices shown earlier.

Online calculator
If you want to see what your route would cost as a standard charter, so you have something to measure an empty leg against, use the calculator below. Fill in the airports, the dates and the number of passengers, add any preference on aircraft type, and we will send a written calculation by email or messenger. Please check your contact details carefully so that we can reply quickly.
The figure the calculator returns is an estimate for planning. The firm quote comes back from our consultants with the cost broken out line by line, and the price agreed there is the price written into the contract.
If you would rather skip the arithmetic, send us the route and the dates instead and a consultant will come back with both numbers, the charter price and any empty leg that fits.
Entering Switzerland at Basel: passports, customs and goods
A private flight from Britain to Basel crosses the external border of the Schengen area. Switzerland belongs to Schengen but not to the EU, so the passport rules are those of Schengen, while the customs rules depend on the side of the airport you leave from.
Passport. A British passport qualifies if it is under ten years old when you land in Basel and still has three months to run on the day you expect to leave the Schengen area.
Length of stay. Up to 90 days in any 180 across the Schengen area need no visa for meetings, fairs or holidays; paid work in Switzerland, even a short assignment, may need a permit, so check before you go.
Entry/Exit System. Switzerland applies the EU's digital border record, which has replaced passport stamps; at your first entry the officers take a photograph and, from the age of twelve, fingerprints, and the record stays valid for three years.
ETIAS. The EU travel permit, which will also cover Switzerland, is not in operation, and the EU withdrew its target of late 2026 in July.
Swiss side. Each traveller may bring in goods worth up to 150 francs free of VAT, with duty free limits of 5 litres of drinks up to 18 per cent alcohol, 1 litre above that and 250 cigarettes a day. Cash needs no declaration, but anyone asked about a sum of 10,000 francs or more must answer truthfully.
French side. The EU allowances apply: goods up to 430 euros, 200 cigarettes, a litre of spirits or two of fortified or sparkling wine, 4 litres of still wine and 16 of beer; cash of 10,000 euros or more must be declared.
Meat and milk. Meat and dairy products from Great Britain may not be brought in on either side of the airport.
Art, watches and samples. Works for a gallery stand, watches for a client or samples for a meeting travel under an ATA Carnet or a customs declaration prepared before the flight.
Coming home. Back in Britain, the duty free limits for each adult are 18 litres of still wine and 42 of beer, plus 4 litres of spirits or 9 of fortified wine, 200 cigarettes and other goods up to 270 GBP. From 1 October 2026 the 18 litres cover sparkling wine as well, and cider is measured against the beer limit.

Three situations in Basel, three answers
A day at a pharma campus
Leave London after breakfast, land at Basel about an hour and a half later and be at the Novartis Campus within ten minutes or at Roche within twenty. Plan the flight home to leave before 22:00, and watch for aircraft that bring other visitors to Basel in the morning and would otherwise fly back empty.
Collectors' week in June
Hotels sell out early and private aircraft may be allowed only a short stop. Book the flight and the hotel months ahead, expect the aircraft to leave after dropping you and return for the flight home, and look out for the many empty sectors the fair produces.
Alsace or the Black Forest
For Colmar, Mulhouse or the wine route, tell us early so that the handler can take you out through the French exit; for Freiburg and the Black Forest, the drive takes about an hour. We then check whether the French tax applies to the flight home.
Taking a dog or a cat to Basel
Before a dog, cat or ferret boards in Britain, it must be microchipped and vaccinated against rabies at least 21 days ahead, and an official vet must sign its animal health certificate within the ten days before it reaches Switzerland. Switzerland follows the EU rules here and asks for no tapeworm treatment on the way in.
For the flight home, only operators approved to bring animals into Britain may carry them, and a vet must treat a dog against tapeworm between one and five days before it lands in the UK. Basel has vets used to British paperwork; arrange the visit when you book the flight, and tell us about the animal in your first message, because only approved operators can be offered.

Private flights to Basel: what clients ask
How long does it take to fly to Basel?
About 1h 25m to 1h 35m from Farnborough, London, Oxford, Southampton, Jersey, Bristol and Birmingham, 1h 40m from Biggin Hill in a PC-12 or from Cardiff, 1h 45m to 1h 50m from Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool and Newcastle, and 2h 00m to 2h 05m from Edinburgh, Dublin, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Belfast.
Is Basel airport in France or in Switzerland?
In France, 3.5 kilometres from Basel, but it is run jointly by France and Switzerland. The Swiss sector, code BSL, connects to the city by a customs road, and the French sector, code MLH, opens onto Alsace.
Until what time can a private jet use EuroAirport?
Business and private aircraft may land and take off from 06:00 to 21:59 local time. Airliners may still leave their stands until 23:00, but private aircraft may not.
Which FBO will look after me at Basel?
Usually Air Service Basel, which has its own building, lounge and hangar in the Swiss sector, or Swissport, whose private passengers use an executive lounge in the main terminal.
Can I eat at the Basel FBO before the flight?
Not in a restaurant: Air Service Basel has a VIP lounge but no restaurant, so meals are ordered in advance through the handler. The main terminal, a few minutes away, has Le Chalet for Swiss food, and Rossopomodoro and the Skybar beside its observation deck.
What does the cheapest Basel empty leg cost?
The cheapest sector in our table is a Pilatus PC-12 back to Biggin Hill at about 2,200 GBP, with a Citation M2 from Cardiff next at about 2,900 GBP; both prices cover the whole aircraft. Booked as a full charter for your own dates, the same eighteen routes cost between about 5,300 GBP and 24,700 GBP.
Will I pay the French passenger tax?
It applies to commercial departures from EuroAirport unless they operate under Swiss traffic rights. On a jet to Britain it comes to 420 euros for each passenger, and every quote we send states whether it is payable.
Can the aircraft wait at Basel?
Normally yes, on the apron or in a hangar at Air Service Basel, Jet Aviation or AMAC Aerospace, subject to space. During Art Basel overnight parking has been restricted in past years, so the aircraft may have to wait elsewhere.
Do British visitors need a visa for Switzerland?
No, not for business or leisure stays of up to 90 days in any 180 within the Schengen area. ETIAS, the online permit planned for the Schengen area, has no start date yet.
And if nothing is released for my dates?
Give us the day, the number of passengers and any room to move. New Basel sectors come up weekly, and if none matches we quote a charter with the handling and any French tax built in.
Call +44 7857 574938 , message the same number on WhatsApp , or write to flight@empty-leg.co.uk . Tell us the day, how many are flying, whether you are heading for a pharma campus, the Messe or Alsace, and whether you carry works of art or samples. We reply with the matching sectors and a charter price side by side, and both include the EuroAirport handling, the choice of side, any French tax and the car.
