Empty leg flights to and from Naples

Naples is the gateway to one of the most glamorous coastlines in Italy. From its airport a helicopter reaches Capri in about twenty minutes, and a car follows the road round the bay to Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. The city itself rewards a stay of its own: the historic centre listed by UNESCO, the Archaeological Museum, the pizzerias of Spaccanapoli and Vesuvius above the bay, with Pompeii and Herculaneum within half an hour. Naples keeps Central European Time, one hour ahead of London, and the flight from the capital takes roughly 2h 40m in a light or midsize jet.

For private flights, Naples means Naples International Airport at Capodichino, code NAP, on the north eastern edge of the city, and increasingly Salerno Costa d'Amalfi, run by the same company and closer to the Amalfi Coast, which opened a new terminal for private flights in July 2026.

Naples sectors available today

The first list shows every sector we hold into or out of Naples, and when Naples is quiet it adds flights released at Salerno, the second airport of Campania and the nearest one to the Amalfi Coast. The list after it prices each of those aircraft as a charter on dates of your own choosing.

Ask us what is available at Naples right now.

This board refreshes through the day as operators release sectors, and it shows only part of the market: a large share of repositioning flights never reach a public list at all. Check back shortly, or tell us your route and dates and we will look at what operators are holding at this moment.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.

Set up an alert for Naples

Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up between the UK and Naples.

Please fill in both the departure and the arrival city.

Nothing is stored on this site. The button opens a chat with the message already written, and you send it yourself. We reply during office hours, 07:00 to 23:00, and check messages outside them too.

Why so many jets leave Naples empty

Few airports in Europe produce empty legs as reliably as Naples in summer. The reason is simple: the aircraft is not allowed to stay, while its passengers stay for a week.

A three hour limit on the ground
In summer Naples caps the stay of a visiting business jet at about three hours and offers no overnight parking. So when a family flies in for a week on Capri, its aircraft departs again within hours, spends the week at base or at a less crowded airport, and later returns with an empty cabin to fetch them.
Capri and the Amalfi Coast
The island hotels, the villas above Positano and the palaces of Ravello fill from May to October, and most guests who arrive by private jet land at Naples or Salerno. Each stay produces a flight out with nobody on board and a flight back with nobody on board.
A growing airport
Naples handled 13,271,522 passengers in 2025, a record that confirmed it as one of Italy's busiest airports. Airline traffic takes most of the slots, which leaves little room on the apron for private aircraft in high season.
Yachts in the bay
The Gulf of Naples and the coast between Sorrento and Salerno are among the favourite cruising grounds of the Mediterranean. Owners and charter guests join their yachts here and leave from another port, so jets fly one way full and the other way empty.
November 2026
Capodichino closes for the whole of November 2026 while its runway is resurfaced, so private flights that month move to Salerno or to Rome, and the positioning flights around the closure add further sectors.

Sectors appear from Easter to the end of October above all, with the busiest weeks in July and August. With no place to park, the aircraft's return to Britain is frequently put on sale only on the day of the drop or the evening before.

Naples International Airport in detail

Aircraft have flown from Capodichino since the early years of aviation, and the airfield opened to civil traffic in 1950 while remaining home to units of the Italian Air Force and to the United States Navy support base. In 1997 it became the first Italian airport to be privatised, when BAA bought the majority of its operator, GESAC, today controlled by 2i Aeroporti. The airport handled 12,650,478 passengers and 86,498 movements in 2024, and 13,271,522 passengers in 2025. A metro station on Line 1, which will link the terminal with the city centre, is due to open at the end of 2026 or early in 2027.

Codes NAP (IATA) and LIRN (ICAO)
Location Capodichino, on the north eastern edge of Naples, a few kilometres from the historic centre and the central station
Runway A single asphalt runway, 06/24, of 2,628 metres by 45 metres
Elevation About 90 metres, or 294 feet, above sea level
Operator GESAC, which also runs Salerno Costa d'Amalfi
Hours Take offs and landings from 06:00 to 23:00 local time, with no extensions for private flights
Permission Every private flight needs a PPR from the airport's online system for general aviation, which opens only 15 days before the flight
Parking In summer, a stay of about three hours at most and no overnight parking for private aircraft
Handlers Sky Services, AviaVIP, Signature, Alisud, Fly Service and others
Fuel Jet A1 and AVGAS 100LL from two suppliers
November 2026 Closed from 1 to 30 November 2026 for the renovation of the runway and taxiways; part of the airline traffic moves to Salerno and part to Rome
Traffic 13,271,522 passengers in 2025
Business aircraft The Citation Mustang, the Legacy 600 and the Phenom 300 were the types seen most often in 2025

For crews, Naples is short on everything except scenery. The runway of 2,628 metres suits every business jet, but the airport sits among the buildings of the city, closes at 23:00 and gives airlines priority for its stands. The PPR has to be requested exactly when the online window opens, 15 days ahead, and the operator needs a plan for where the aircraft goes after the drop: home, to Salerno if a stand is free there, or to Rome, Bari or Lamezia Terme. That plan is the reason a Naples trip so often turns into two empty positioning flights.

The handlers, their lounges and the new terminal at Salerno

At Naples, private passengers are looked after by the general aviation handlers, who meet the aircraft, take the party through passport control and customs and bring the car to the door. At Salerno, a terminal built only for private flights opened in July 2026.

AviaVIP at Capodichino
Guests of AviaVIP wait in a lounge equipped for work, with its own printer and internet connection, next to a prayer room and a separate room for crews. The team clears passports and customs on the spot, accepts animals and can keep your car in short or long term parking. AviaVIP is open from 04:00 to 21:00 UTC, which matches the opening hours of the airport in summer.
Sky Services in Naples
Sky Services, a network that covers more than 40 Italian airports, works from Terminal 1 at Capodichino with fuel from two suppliers, ramp services and catering through its Sky Cuisine service, and its staff are on hand from 08:00 to 20:00 with a number for later arrivals.
Alisud, Signature and the others
Alisud has handled private aircraft at Naples since 1956 and belongs to a group that also works at Ciampino, Palermo and Catania. Signature Aviation, Fly Service and several smaller agents also serve private flights at Capodichino, and flight support companies such as Universal Aviation arrange permits, parking and catering through them.
The Caruso lounge for airline departures
If one of your party flies home on an airline, GESAC's Caruso VIP lounge on the first floor of the terminal, after security near gates C16 and C18, is a calm place to wait. Reopened in February 2018 at about 300 square metres, twice its former size, with 62 seats, it offers free wireless internet, iPads on request, international newspapers, a bar with light meals including vegetarian and allergen free dishes, wines from Campania and showers. Entry comes with an airline's lounge access, the airport's Privilege Card or a day pass; a second lounge, Pearl, faces gate C19, and the airport's Pearl meet and assist service can take guests through the fast track security lane.
No restaurant on the private side
The handlers' lounges keep to drinks and light refreshments, and meals for the flight are ordered in advance, for example through Sky Cuisine, the catering service of Sky Services. With the aircraft limited to a quick turn, few guests linger: the trattorie of the old town are twenty minutes away.
Salerno's terminal for private flights
Inaugurated on 14 July 2026 after two years of work and an investment of 14.2 million euros, the new terminal at Salerno Costa d'Amalfi covers about 2,000 square metres, is finished with ceramics from the Salerno area and will draw about 40 per cent of its energy from solar panels. Aviagold, a company created by GESAC in 2025, provides handling, concierge and hospitality for private guests there.
Salerno for a longer stay
Salerno has more room for visiting aircraft than Naples, with stays of 24 hours or more approved when stands are free, and it is closer than Naples to Amalfi and Ravello. In November 2026 Salerno also takes part of the airline traffic while Capodichino is closed.

Which of these companies meets your flight is normally decided by the operator, though a preference for a particular lounge is usually easy to pass on.

From the aircraft to Capri, Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast, step by step

At Naples the time on the ground is short for the aircraft and for you. This is how a private arrival works, and the departure follows the same steps in reverse.

ON THE APRON
A minibus beside the jet
The handler's staff meet the jet with a minibus and take you and your bags straight across the apron, while the crew prepare to leave within the three hour limit.
THE BORDER
Passports at Capodichino
A flight from the UK arrives from outside Schengen, so the Polizia di Frontiera look at every passport before you reach the car. On the first crossing under the Entry/Exit System, a photograph is taken of every traveller and fingerprints of everyone aged twelve or more.
LUGGAGE
No carousel to wait for
There is no carousel and no queue at a belt: the handler takes the bags from the hold through customs to the car, the boat transfer or the helicopter. A helicopter to the islands takes about one bag of 15 kilograms a person, so large cases usually travel separately by car or boat, and on Capri the bags are tagged at Marina Grande and carried to your hotel by the island's porters, charged by the piece.
BY HELICOPTER
Twenty minutes to the coast
Helicopter operators based at Capodichino fly to Capri, Ischia, Sorrento or Ravello in about twenty minutes, in machines that take up to four passengers. The handler brings you from the aircraft to the helicopter, so there is no second terminal to cross.
BY BOAT
From the port to the islands
A car reaches the port of Naples in about half an hour, and from Molo Beverello a private speedboat crosses to Capri in about 40 minutes, a hydrofoil in about 50. Capri charges every visitor a landing fee, raised to 5 euros between April and October.
BY CAR
Round the bay
A car booked by the handler reaches Sorrento in about an hour and Positano, Amalfi or Ravello in about an hour and a half, more on summer weekends when the coast road is busy.
THE LOUNGES
A short wait in comfort
Few private passengers stay long, yet each handler has a lounge with drinks and wireless internet, and AviaVIP adds a prayer room and welcomes pets.
WHEN TO ARRIVE
Before the airport closes
For the flight home, reach the handler about 30 minutes before departure, and remember that no aircraft may leave Naples after 23:00, so a late dinner in Positano needs a car at the right time.
TAX FREE
VAT back on leather and linen
Shoppers who live outside the EU can recover Italian VAT on sandals from Capri, tailoring from Chiaia and other larger purchases, provided the export form is stamped by customs before take off; warn the handler a day ahead.
AIRLINE ONE WAY
Scheduled flights to Britain
When the private flight covers only one direction, British Airways flies between Naples and Heathrow, easyJet serves Gatwick, Luton and Stansted, and Ryanair flies to Luton and Stansted, with seasonal flights to several British regional airports.

Timing is everything at Naples. The PPR, the helicopter or the boat and, for the flight home, the aircraft's return from wherever it waited are planned together, and we arrange them with the flight.

Five things to know before booking Naples

Each of the following affects the timing or the cost of a Naples trip, which is why every quote we send covers them from the outset.

PPR exactly 15 days ahead
The airport's online system accepts requests for private flights only 15 days before the date, and summer stands go quickly. The handler files the request on the first day it is possible.
The jet will not wait
With a stay of about three hours and no overnight parking in summer, a week on Capri is priced as two separate flights, and the aircraft waits at home or at another airport in between.
Nothing after 23:00
The runway is closed to all traffic from 23:00 to 06:00, so an evening departure is planned with time to spare.
Closed in November 2026
From 1 to 30 November 2026 Capodichino is closed for runway works. Private flights that month use Salerno, about an hour from Naples by road, or Rome, about two and a quarter hours away.
Two hundred euros a head
Italy charges a tax on every passenger of a private charter on each flight into or out of the country. Every route in our table is long enough to fall into the upper band, so the tax is 200 euros a passenger a flight.

From Capodichino to the city, the islands and the coast

The airport sits on the edge of the city, and the coast and the islands are within easy reach by road, by sea or by air. The times below are approximate, outside the rush hours and the summer weekend traffic.

Destination From Capodichino What is there
Historic centre and Naples Centrale About 20 minutes by car The old town listed by UNESCO, the Duomo and the Archaeological Museum
Chiaia and the seafront About 30 minutes by car The grand hotels on the Via Partenope and the views of Vesuvius
Molo Beverello About 30 minutes by car The port for boats and hydrofoils to Capri, Ischia and Procida
Pompeii About 30 to 45 minutes by car The Roman city buried by Vesuvius in AD 79
Royal Palace of Caserta About 30 to 40 minutes by car The Bourbon palace and its gardens, listed by UNESCO
Sorrento About 1 hour by car, 20 minutes by helicopter Clifftop hotels and the ferries to Capri
Capri About 20 minutes by helicopter The Piazzetta, the Faraglioni and the villas of Anacapri
Positano About 1h 30m by car The village of coloured houses above the beach
Amalfi and Ravello About 1h 30m by car, 20 minutes to Ravello by helicopter The cathedral of Amalfi and the gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone
Salerno Costa d'Amalfi airport About 1 hour by car The second airport of Campania and the start of the Amalfi Coast

For a party with a lot of luggage the car is the simplest choice, while the helicopter saves the most time in July and August, when the coast road can take twice as long.

Taxes and charges on a Naples trip

On top of the aircraft price come four smaller items: British duty on the flight out, the Italian passenger tax on every leg, the Naples city tax on hotel nights and the landing fee on Capri.

UK duty
Air Passenger Duty on the flight out of Britain, Band A, for jets of 5.7 tonnes or more
Italian passenger tax
200 euros for every passenger on each flight between Britain and Naples, in both directions
City tax in Naples
up to 6 euros a person a night in four and five star hotels under the rates approved for 2026
Capri landing fee
5 euros a person from April to October and 2.50 euros in the other months, for every visitor to the island

The Italian tax applies to private charters in aircraft with up to nineteen seats and is collected by the operator. The law adds 95 kilometres to the shortest distance between departure and arrival and charges 100 euros a passenger when the result is 1,500 kilometres or less, 200 euros when it is more. Even Jersey and Biggin Hill, the closest airports in our table, are more than 1,500 kilometres from Naples on that measure, so every route pays the higher rate. When a leg positions with no passengers the tax is zero, but once you buy it as an empty leg you are passengers like any others and the charge applies.

On the British side, APD falls on the outbound flight alone, in Band A for Italy: 32 GBP a head in a private jet between 5.7 and 20 tonnes and 142 GBP above that up to the end of March 2027, then one rate of 146.63 GBP for all private jets from 5.7 tonnes from April 2027. Lighter aircraft and flights from the Channel Islands are exempt, and the Scottish government takes over the tax on flights from Scotland in April 2027.

Salerno, Rome and the other airports for the Bay of Naples

Naples is the natural airport for the city and the islands, but its summer rules and the November closure make the other airports of southern Italy part of almost every plan.

Naples Capodichino, LIRN. The main airport, with a runway of 2,628 metres, open from 06:00 to 23:00, quick turns only in summer and closed throughout November 2026.
Salerno Costa d'Amalfi, LIRI. About an hour south east of Naples by road, with a runway of about 2,000 metres, the new terminal for private flights and more room for aircraft to stay; the nearest airport to Amalfi and Ravello.
Rome Ciampino, LIRA. About two and a quarter hours by road or 35 minutes by jet, a common base for aircraft waiting between a drop and a collection at Naples.
Bari and Lamezia Terme. Further south, airports where a jet can often wait for a day or longer, useful when Naples and Salerno are full.
Capri and the islands. Capri has no airport, only a heliport near Anacapri, so the island is reached by helicopter or by boat from Naples or Sorrento.

Popular routes between the UK and Naples, and which way they run empty

Prices in this table buy the entire jet on a leg the operator must fly regardless, so two passengers pay the same as eight, and the durations shown are airborne time only. At roughly 1,600 kilometres from London, Naples is an easy trip even for a Citation M2, which appears on the Biggin Hill and Jersey lines, while a Challenger 350 or a Praetor 600 carries the larger groups. Add the Italian tax of 200 euros for each passenger. If your dates are set, compare with the standard charter figures in the second list near the top.

Arriving in Italy at Naples: passports and customs

A private flight from Britain to Naples crosses the external border of the EU and of Schengen, and Italian police and customs clear it at Capodichino or at Salerno.

  • Passport. Check both dates on the photo page before booking: Italy refuses a passport issued more than ten years ago or one that expires less than three months after you leave Schengen.
  • Visa free days. A rolling limit of 90 days in any 180 applies to British visitors across the whole Schengen area, with no visa needed.
  • Entry/Exit System. Since April 2026 the border records British travellers electronically instead of stamping the passport, with a photograph and, from the age of twelve, fingerprints on the first entry.
  • ETIAS. The EU travel authorisation is not yet required and has no confirmed start date; it is expected to cost 20 euros and last three years.
  • Customs. Italy lets each adult arriving from the UK bring in, free of duty, 200 cigarettes and either a litre of spirits or two of sparkling or fortified wine, together with 4 litres of still wine, 16 of beer and goods worth 430 euros; larger sums of cash, from 10,000 euros, are declared.
  • Food. British ham, bacon, milk and cheese are turned away at the EU border, and there is no need for them in a city famous for its mozzarella.
  • Back to Britain. The duty free allowance for the flight home is 200 cigarettes, 4 litres of spirits or 9 of fortified wine, 18 litres of still wine, 42 litres of beer and 270 GBP of other goods for each adult, enough for plenty of limoncello; from 1 October 2026 sparkling wine sits inside the wine limit and cider inside the beer limit.

Three situations, three answers

A week on Capri
Land at Naples, step into a helicopter and reach the island twenty minutes later. The jet must leave Capodichino within about three hours, so book two one way flights and look for the empty sectors that operators release before and after your week.
A wedding in Ravello
Guests arriving on the same day compete for the few stands at Naples. Salerno is closer to Ravello and allows longer stays, so it is often the better airport for the main party, with Naples for the rest.
Christmas in the city
December is quiet at the airport and the stands are easier to find, so the jet may be able to stay for a short break. A private flight suits a long weekend of cribs, concerts and pastries without the summer crowds.

Flying to Naples with a dog or a cat

A dog or cat travelling from Britain to Italy needs three things: a chip, a rabies jab at least 21 days old and an official veterinary health certificate issued no more than ten days before arrival, as pet passports from EU countries held by British residents stopped being valid in April 2026. No tapeworm treatment is needed to enter Italy. Tell the handler in advance so that the check at the airport is ready; AviaVIP at Naples welcomes pets, and hotels on the coast should be asked in advance whether they accept animals.

Dog in the cabin of a private jet to Naples

The return needs more care. Coming home, the animal may only fly with an operator that holds British approval for pets, and a dog needs its tapeworm treatment from a vet one to five days before the aircraft lands. Vets in Naples and Sorrento are used to this treatment for travelling dogs; book the appointment with the flight, and tell us about the animal in your first message so that we contact only operators able to carry it.

About 2h 35m from Biggin Hill and Jersey, 2h 40m to 2h 50m from London, Farnborough, Southampton, Oxford, Bristol, Birmingham and Cardiff, 3h 00m to 3h 05m from Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool and Newcastle, and 3h 15m to 3h 20m from Dublin, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Belfast.
Can the aircraft wait for me in Naples?
Not in summer. The airport allows a visiting jet about three hours and no night on the ground, so it flies away after landing you and comes back at the end of the stay, and those two positioning flights are the empty legs we sell.
How do I get to Capri from the airport?
By helicopter in about twenty minutes, or by car to the port and a private boat or hydrofoil from Molo Beverello in under an hour. Capri has no airport of its own.
What does an empty leg to Naples cost?
The lowest fares in our table are two Citation M2 sectors, Naples to Biggin Hill and Naples to Jersey, each from about 4,400 GBP for the whole aircraft. As standard charters on dates of your choosing, the same eighteen routes would cost from about 10,500 GBP to 29,100 GBP.
How much is the Italian tax on a flight to Naples?
200 euros for each passenger on every flight between Britain and Naples, in either direction, because every route in our table is longer than the 1,500 kilometre threshold.
Can I fly into Naples at night?
No. Take offs and landings are allowed only from 06:00 to 23:00 local time, and the airport grants no extensions for private flights.
What happens in November 2026?
Capodichino is closed from 1 to 30 November 2026 while the runway and taxiways are renovated. Salerno and Rome take the private traffic for that month.
And if nothing is released for my dates?
Give us the travel window, the number in your party and whether a day earlier or later would work. Between June and September jets leave Naples empty almost every day, so a suitable sector usually appears quickly, and if it does not, we quote a charter.

Call +44 7857 574938 , message the same number on WhatsApp , or write to flight@empty-leg.co.uk . Include your dates, the party size, the bags and the name of your hotel or villa. You will receive the matching sectors and the charter alternative, and one quote that covers the PPR at Capodichino, the handler, the Italian passenger tax and the final leg by helicopter, boat or car.
