Flying to a boat is the one journey in private aviation that is genuinely one way. You land, you board, and a week later the yacht is somewhere else entirely. Nobody needs a return ticket to the airport they arrived at, and that is exactly the shape of an empty leg.
It is also why yacht travel and repositioning sectors fit together better than almost any other pairing. This page covers the airports next to the marinas, what a flight to the boat costs, the weeks when aircraft are moving anyway, and the two things that decide whether an empty leg will work for your trip at all: how fixed your dates are, and where the boat will actually be when you land.
Four reasons, and the first one does most of the work.

Yachting hubs and business aviation airports do not always sit together. These are the pairings that matter across the Mediterranean and the Adriatic.
| Airport | Ports and marinas | Transfer | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nice NCE |
Monaco, Antibes and Port Vauban, Cannes, Villefranche | Monaco in about 7 minutes by helicopter, Antibes around 30 minutes by road | One of the busiest business aviation airports in Europe and the default gateway for the whole Riviera. Book slots early in July and August |
| Olbia OLB |
Porto Cervo, Porto Rotondo, the Costa Smeralda, La Maddalena | About 40 minutes by road to Porto Cervo, 10 by helicopter | In the second and third weeks of August the airport runs at capacity, with parking, slots and helicopter windows all tight |
| Palma de Mallorca PMI |
Puerto Portals, Port Adriano, Club de Mar and the refit yards | 15 to 35 minutes by road depending on the marina | One of the largest superyacht bases in the Mediterranean, and the place where the season starts and ends for a large part of the fleet |
| Ibiza IBZ |
Marina Ibiza, Marina Botafoch, Formentera anchorages | 15 to 20 minutes by road to the marinas | Short transfers and heavy summer traffic in both directions, so sectors appear often but move quickly |
| La Mole LTT |
Saint-Tropez, Port Grimaud, Pampelonne | About 20 minutes by road off peak, 45 or more in summer | Closest field to the port but restricted to light aircraft in daylight only. See the section below before you plan around it |
| Toulon Hyeres TLN |
Saint-Tropez, Porquerolles, the Var coast | About an hour by road to Saint-Tropez, about 20 minutes by helicopter | Takes aircraft up to heavy jets and avoids the coastal traffic out of Nice, which in August is worth more than the extra distance |
| Tivat TIV |
Porto Montenegro, the Bay of Kotor | About 4 km, under ten minutes by car | One of the shortest airport to berth transfers in the Mediterranean. Montenegro is outside the Schengen area, so allow for the border formalities |
| Split and Dubrovnik SPU, DBV |
The ACI marina network, Hvar, the Dalmatian islands | 20 to 30 minutes by road to the nearest marina | The Adriatic season is shorter and busier than the Riviera, which concentrates traffic into July and August |
| Athens ATH |
Alimos, Flisvos, Lavrio, and the gateway to the Cyclades | 30 to 50 minutes by road depending on the marina | Most Greek charters start here rather than at the islands, and an onward hop to the islands is usually easier to arrange from here than a direct flight |
La Mole is fifteen kilometres from the old port and it sounds like the obvious answer. For most aircraft it is not available.
The runway is around 1,070 metres with no lighting, which means daylight operations only, and it takes light jets and turboprops flown by specially qualified captains rather than the midsize aircraft most parties travel on. A flight from the UK can land there directly only between 1 July and 15 October, and in July and August slots are scarce on top of that.
What works instead: a turboprop or light jet straight into La Mole if the sector and the timing suit, or a larger aircraft into Nice or Toulon with a helicopter of about twenty minutes for the last stretch. We will tell you which of the three your party and your luggage actually allow rather than quote the one that sounds best.
Guide prices for the whole aircraft in pounds, one way from London. The empty leg column is what a repositioning sector typically starts at when one exists on the route.
| Route | Aircraft | Seats | Time | Empty leg from | Charter from |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| London to La Mole | Phenom 300 | 7 | 1h 55m | 4,500 GBP | 10,800 GBP |
| London to Nice | Citation XLS+ | 8 | 1h 55m | 6,100 GBP | 14,500 GBP |
| London to Palma | Citation XLS+ | 8 | 2h 20m | 7,400 GBP | 17,600 GBP |
| London to Ibiza | Hawker 900XP | 8 | 2h 20m | 7,500 GBP | 17,900 GBP |
| London to Split | Citation Latitude | 9 | 2h 30m | 8,400 GBP | 19,900 GBP |
| London to Tivat | Citation XLS+ | 8 | 2h 50m | 9,000 GBP | 21,400 GBP |
| London to Olbia | Challenger 604 | 12 | 2h 20m | 12,100 GBP | 28,800 GBP |
| London to Mykonos | Challenger 350 | 9 | 3h 40m | 13,100 GBP | 31,200 GBP |
| London to Athens | Praetor 600 | 9 | 3h 45m | 13,200 GBP | 31,400 GBP |
Divide by the party and the figures change character. A Challenger 604 to Olbia at 12,100 GBP is around 1,008 GBP a head with twelve on board, on an aircraft nobody else is on, landing ten minutes by helicopter from Porto Cervo.

Two costs sit outside the aircraft price and appear as their own lines: the helicopter, if you want one, at roughly 1,300 to 2,600 GBP for the machine rather than per person, and Air Passenger Duty per passenger on the UK departure.
What our operator network has released at the moment. Mediterranean sectors in season are taken faster than anything else on the list, so if something here fits, say so quickly.

Prices are for the whole aircraft and are shown in pounds. Some are indicative figures worked out from the distance and the class of jet; the firm price is confirmed with the operator when you send a request.
Yacht plans move. Tell us where the boat is meant to be and the week you need to be on it, and we will watch every airport that serves that stretch of coast.
| Period | What is happening | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| April and May | Boats leave the refit yards, crews join, the Palma shows open the season | Deep discounts and plenty of choice, with strong odds on a westbound sector |
| Late May and early June | The Cannes festival and the Monaco Grand Prix saturate the Riviera | Charter, booked months ahead. Nice slots and Monaco helicopter windows both sell out |
| June and July | Charter season in full flow, guests changing over on Saturdays | Sectors appear daily but go within hours. Register the route rather than watch the page |
| Second and third weeks of August | The busiest fortnight of the Mediterranean year, Olbia and Ibiza at capacity | Charter, and expect peak pricing, tight parking and rationed helicopter slots |
| September | The Cannes Yachting Festival and the Monaco Yacht Show, then Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez | Book the show weeks early, but the days either side are unusually good value |
| October and November | Boats head for winter berths, refit yards or the Atlantic crossing | Heavy one way traffic and aircraft leaving the coast. Excellent odds in both directions |

Getting from the apron to the passerelle is its own problem, and on the Riviera in August it is the part that goes wrong.
| Leg | By helicopter | By road |
|---|---|---|
| Nice to Monaco | about 7 minutes | 45 minutes to well over an hour in season |
| Nice to Saint-Tropez | about 20 minutes | 1h 30m to 2 hours, longer on an August Saturday |
| Toulon to Saint-Tropez | about 20 minutes | about an hour |
| Olbia to Porto Cervo | about 10 minutes | about 40 minutes |
Two things to plan around. Helicopter capacity between Nice and Saint-Tropez is genuinely constrained in July and August, so the transfer needs booking with the flight rather than on arrival. And where the yacht can send a tender to a nearby quay, that is often quicker than any road leg, which is worth checking with the captain before we fix the airport.
Yacht luggage follows different rules from hotel luggage, and one category catches people out every season. Below is what actually travels with you and what has to go another way.
| What you are bringing | Flies with you | What to do about it |
|---|---|---|
| Soft holdalls | Yes | What every captain asks for. They collapse into a locker and they load into a jet hold better than anything rigid |
| Hard suitcases | Yes, but | Awkward in a tender and there is nowhere to stow them on board. Most guests regret bringing them by day two |
| Wing, kite and surf boards | Usually | Long rather than heavy. The limit is the length of the compartment, so send us the dimensions and we will check them against the aircraft |
| Inflatable paddleboards | Yes | No trouble at all, and the pump counts as nothing. The rigid version is the one that needs checking |
| eFoils and Seabobs | No | The batteries are the problem. Anything above 160 watt hours is not accepted in passenger baggage, and an eFoil or Seabob pack is many times that. They travel by freight or by road, and we will arrange it separately |
| Spare lithium batteries | Depends | Up to 100 watt hours is routine. Between 100 and 160 needs the operator's agreement in advance. Above that it does not fly with you |
| Dive cylinders | Depends | Only empty, with the valve open or removed, and only where the operator accepts them. Filling them at the destination is almost always simpler |
| Drones | Depends | Battery rules apply as above, and several countries restrict the aircraft itself. Tell us the destination and we will check both |
| Fishing tackle | Yes | Rods travel well in a tube. Hooks and knives go in the hold rather than the cabin |
| Golf clubs | Yes | Fine on midsize aircraft, tight on light jets once the party is more than four |
| Wine and provisions | Yes | Common and entirely doable. Weight counts against the aircraft and alcohol counts at the border, so both get priced rather than discovered |
| Eveningwear and garment bags | Yes | Midsize aircraft and above usually have hanging space. Say so in advance and it is reserved rather than folded |
| Art, watches and jewellery | Yes, with paperwork | Value affects insurance and customs. For items moving temporarily between countries there are procedures that avoid paying duty twice, and they need arranging before you fly |
| Yacht spare parts | Yes | Parts destined for a vessel can often move under customs relief. The saving is real and it depends on the paperwork being right before departure |
The battery rule is the one to plan around. Guests routinely assume their eFoil or Seabob will come with them because it fits in the car. It will not fit in the rules: batteries of that size are classed as dangerous goods and are not carried in passenger baggage on any aircraft.
If the toys need to reach the boat, tell us early and we will move them as freight or by road to arrive before you do. Left to the morning of the flight it becomes a problem with no solution.
Two more things worth settling before we fix the aircraft. Weight counts as much as volume, and a full party with boards, provisions and a case of wine can push a light jet past its limit on a warm day. And length beats everything: a compartment that swallows ten soft bags will still refuse a two metre board, so we check the specific hold rather than the class.

A separate conversation from guest travel, and one we are happy to have with a captain or a management company directly.
Rotations are the ideal empty leg passenger: a fixed group, a known corridor, a week that can usually flex by a day, and a budget that has to justify itself. Where a yacht runs a predictable pattern across a season, we will watch those corridors continuously and come to you with the sectors rather than wait to be asked.
We also handle the awkward jobs that sit around the boat: getting a specialist engineer to a yard at short notice, moving a part that has to reach the vessel before it sails, and putting guests on the aircraft after a change of plan on the day. Terms for management companies are agreed once, in writing, and apply across the season.
It happens constantly, and it is the one real weakness of an empty leg for this kind of trip. The sector goes where the aircraft was already going, so if the yacht is now two ports further east the flight does not follow it.
The way round it is to keep the booking as late as the operator allows and to treat the port as flexible rather than the date. Tell us the stretch of coast rather than the marina, and we will look at every field on it.
Yes, and this is where the product is at its best. Two separate one way flights, each booked on its own merits, often both as empty legs if the dates are flexible.
Tell us the likely end port and the week, and we will watch both corridors at once. If the return is uncertain, we quote it closer to the time rather than committing you early.
Often, and it is frequently the fastest last mile. Where a quay or a beach club landing is close to the airport, a tender beats a road transfer that has to work its way around a headland in August traffic.
We coordinate the timings with the captain or the management company directly, so the tender leaves when the aircraft is actually on the ground rather than when it was scheduled to be.
On arrival into the Schengen area from the UK, yes, and it is handled at the private terminal in a matter of minutes. Montenegro, Turkey and Albania sit outside the Schengen area and each has its own requirements, so the formalities there take a little longer.
Our brief for every flight names the airport, the handling agent and what to expect at the border, and the operator files the paperwork.
Yes, and rotations are among the most sensible uses of an empty leg there is. Four to eight people moving one way on a known week is exactly the shape of sector that goes unsold otherwise.
For management companies running several vessels we agree terms once and apply them across the season rather than quoting each movement from scratch.
Tell us the port, the week and how many are travelling. We will come back with the airports that serve it, any empty leg that fits, and the standard charter price alongside so you can see what the flexibility is worth.
