Empty leg flights to and from Tivat

Tivat is the private aviation gateway to Montenegro and the Bay of Kotor. Tivat Airport, code TIV, lies about 4 kilometres south east of the town centre on a strip of flat land between the mountains and the bay, and the end of its runway sits roughly 100 metres from the water. A jet from London takes a little under three hours, and ten minutes after landing you can be on board a yacht at Porto Montenegro, one of the largest superyacht marinas in the Mediterranean.

Tivat is also one of the most particular airports in Europe for business jets. The runway has no edge lighting, so every flight has to happen in daylight, the apron has room for only a handful of private aircraft, and the approach is famous among pilots. All of this makes the airport unusually rich in empty legs, because jets drop their passengers and leave rather than wait.

Tivat sectors available today

The first list shows every sector we currently hold into or out of Tivat. When Tivat itself is quiet, it adds flights into Podgorica and Dubrovnik, both about an hour and a half to two hours by road from the Bay of Kotor. The second list gives the full charter price for the same aircraft on dates of your choosing, so you can weigh each empty leg against a flight that waits for you.

Ask us what is available at Tivat right now.

This board refreshes through the day as operators release sectors, and it shows only part of the market: a large share of repositioning flights never reach a public list at all. Check back shortly, or tell us your route and dates and we will look at what operators are holding at this moment.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.

Set up an alert for Tivat

Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up between the UK and Tivat.

Please fill in both the departure and the arrival city.

Nothing is stored on this site. The button opens a chat with the message already written, and you send it yourself. We reply during office hours, 07:00 to 23:00, and check messages outside them too.

Why Tivat releases so many empty legs

Tivat handled 1,343,565 passengers in 2025, a rise of 19 per cent on the year before, and business aviation grows with it. Five features of the airport and the coast turn a large share of those private flights into empty sectors.

A season packed into five months
About 80 per cent of Tivat's passengers travel between May and September, and weekends from Friday to Sunday are the busiest days. Private jets follow the same curve, so in July and August a steady stream of aircraft arrives full and heads home with nobody on board.
Few stands for private aircraft
The apron has seven stands for airliners and only a handful of places for business jets. Parking is free only for the first four hours, and summer charges climb steeply after a day, so the jet usually drops its passengers, flies off empty and comes back empty for the return.
Yacht weeks from Saturday to Saturday
Porto Montenegro offers more than 500 berths for yachts of up to 250 metres, and Luštica Bay and Portonovi have marinas of their own. Charter guests, owners and crews change over on Saturdays, and the jets that bring them rarely stay for the week.
Villas and hotels along the whole coast
Tivat is the nearest airport for Kotor, Perast, Budva, Luštica Bay and Herceg Novi, and for Aman Sveti Stefan, whose island hotel reopened in July 2026 after five years of closure. Families book villa weeks, and every drop leaves an aircraft to reposition.
Two neighbouring airports within reach
Dubrovnik in Croatia lies about 41 kilometres from Tivat in a straight line and Podgorica about 44. Aircraft working Dubrovnik and the Croatian islands fly past the bay all summer, and a sector into Dubrovnik often suits a trip to Montenegro.

Supply peaks on summer weekends, when owners and charter guests change over, and in the last days of August, when families head home for the new school year. From November to March private traffic thins out, and the airport's winter hours end at 16:30.

Tivat Airport in detail

Tivat Airport opened on 30 May 1957 with a grass strip of 1,200 metres and received its present runway in 1971. It passed to the state company Airports of Montenegro in 2003, and its terminal was rebuilt in 2006 and extended in December 2018.

Codes TIV (IATA) and LYTV (ICAO)
Location In the Tivatsko polje valley, about 4 kilometres south east of Tivat town centre, 7 kilometres from Kotor and 20 kilometres from Budva, on the Adriatic Highway
Opened 30 May 1957, with the present runway in service since 25 September 1971
Elevation About 6 metres, or 20 feet
Runway One asphalt runway, 14/32, of 2,500 metres by 45 metres, whose north western end lies about 100 metres from the Bay of Kotor
Lighting Approach slope indicators only, with no runway edge or approach lights, so the airport works in daylight and has no night flights
Owner Airports of Montenegro, a joint stock company owned by the Government of Montenegro, which also runs Podgorica Airport
Traffic 1,343,565 passengers in 2025, with about 80 per cent of them between May and September. The private types seen most often in 2025 were the Citation Mustang, the Challenger 850 and the Citation CJ2
Aprons A commercial apron with seven stands and a separate general aviation apron with room for only a few business jets
Operating hours 06:30 to 19:30 local time from the start of summer time to 10 September, 06:30 to 19:00 until 30 September, 07:00 to 18:00 in October until the clocks change, and 07:00 to 16:30 through the winter
Notice Private and other non scheduled flights must be coordinated with the airport operations centre 36 hours before arrival or departure, with a general declaration listing crew and passengers
Slots None required; the notice above and a parking stand are what matter
Handling Compulsory; the basic package comes from Airports of Montenegro and is priced by aircraft weight, with VIP extras on top. Menzies Aviation and flight support firms also work at the airport
Fuel and hangars Jet A1 from two tankers operated by Jugopetrol Kotor; there is no hangar space and no repair facility for visiting aircraft
Border and customs Montenegrin border police and customs, as Montenegro is outside both the EU and the Schengen area

The approach explains why pilots call Tivat the Kai Tak of Europe. Arrivals on runway 32 descend into the valley between the mountains and turn by about 20 degrees just before touchdown to line up with the runway. The approach from the other direction, which ended in a still harder circling manoeuvre, was removed from the charts in 2024. Strong crosswinds are common, and in July 2026 flocks of birds over the airfield caused several diversions to Podgorica, Tirana and Bari. Our operators send crews who know the airport, and we plan every flight with an alternate.

Opening hours at Tivat through the year

Because there is no runway lighting, Tivat publishes different hours for each part of the year. All times below are local, one hour ahead of the UK, and there is no night flying in any season.

Late March to 10 September
06:30 to 19:30
The long summer window covers the whole high season. It opens at 06:30 and closes at 19:30, well before sunset in June and July.
11 to 30 September
06:30 to 19:00
The evening closes half an hour earlier as the days shorten, while the morning opening stays at 06:30.
October, until the clocks change
07:00 to 18:00
The airport opens at 07:00 and closes at 18:00 until the clocks go back.
Winter
07:00 to 16:30
From the end of October to late March the airport opens at 07:00 and closes at 16:30, so a flight from Britain has to leave around midday.
Outside the published hours
Daylight only, by request
An arrival or departure outside these hours is possible between half an hour before sunrise and half an hour after sunset, with the airport's consent. An early start must be requested at least 96 hours ahead and can never be before 05:15 in summer, while a later finish must be requested at least an hour before closing. Around midsummer that can stretch the evening to about 20:55.
From London in the afternoon
Wheels up by about 15:00
The flight takes about 2h 50m, and Montenegro is an hour ahead, so a jet leaving London at 15:00 lands at about 18:50 local time, inside the summer window. In winter the same flight should leave London by about 12:00.
Back to London in the morning
Airborne from 06:30
A summer departure at 06:30 puts you on the ground in London at around 08:20 British time. In winter the first departure is at 07:00, landing in London just before 09:00.

Arriving and leaving as a private passenger at Tivat

Tivat has no private terminal in the sense of Farnborough or Nice. The airport company handles business jets itself and sells VIP extras to their passengers, and the details below, including the prices from the airport's own list, make the arrival and the departure predictable.

No separate FBO building
Airports of Montenegro sells a VIP service, but Tivat has no dedicated general aviation terminal. In practice the airport's team escorts private passengers through the passenger terminal along the priority lanes.
What every private flight receives
The airport's basic package for business aircraft is charged by weight: 80 euros for a light jet such as the Citation CJ2 and 140 euros for a midsize one such as the Citation XLS+. It covers marshalling the aircraft onto its stand, the operational messages, supervision of the handling, guiding passengers and crew between the aircraft and the terminal and escorting them from passport control to the steps.
The VIP extras and their prices
The airport's price list adds VIP treatment without a private salon at 40 euros per passenger, with a minimum of 60 euros, fast track through the terminal at 20 euros per passenger with 24 hours' notice, and delivery of up to four bags between the aircraft and your car for 25 euros, plus 5 euros for each further piece. These charges normally reach you through the operator's handling bill.
Private salons only at Podgorica
The VIP salons, the presidential salon and the meeting rooms of Airports of Montenegro are at Podgorica. At Tivat the room you can book is the business lounge, at 8 euros per passenger or 100 euros an hour for the whole lounge.
Who handles the aircraft
The basic handling at Tivat comes from the airport company. Menzies Aviation, which took a 70 per cent stake in a venture with the local handlers Fly Montenegro and Flystar in 2022, also works at Tivat and offers meet and assist, and flight support firms such as Euro Jet and FCG supervise flights for operators, arrange fuel and look after crews. Your operator books all of this, and we check it is in place before the flight is confirmed.
36 hours of notice
The operations centre needs the aircraft type, registration, times and handling request 36 hours before the flight, and the border police need the general declaration with every name on board. A last minute trip is still possible, but it depends on the airport accepting the late request and on a free stand.
Arrival from the UK
A member of the airport's VIP team waits at the steps and walks you to the Montenegrin border police and customs officers. Montenegro is outside Schengen, so there is no EES registration and passports are stamped by hand; with the VIP service the formalities usually take a few minutes.
Bags between the hold and the car
Cars do not drive out to the aircraft at Tivat, so an airport vehicle carries you between the steps and the building while the handling team, for the small baggage fee, takes your bags to the car waiting in the car park. On departure the bags are screened and loaded for you, and you never carry them through the terminal. Tell us about paddleboards, diving kit or cases of wine for a yacht, because the hold of a light jet fills quickly.
Why the VIP service matters in summer
The main terminal is small, and on busy days in July 2026 airline passengers queued outside it for up to two hours. Private passengers with the VIP service avoid those queues entirely.
Something to eat and drink
There is no restaurant for private passengers. The business lounge serves drinks, the terminal has a café bar and the Coffee Cake bakery, and the airport's caterer, Voda u kršu, prepares meals for the aircraft to order, which the handlers load for 30 euros a delivery. For a proper lunch before a flight, the restaurants of Porto Montenegro are ten minutes away.
Friends booked on a scheduled service
For anyone in your party flying on an airline, the business lounge airside in the main terminal, run under the Fly Montenegro name, is open from 08:00 to 18:00. Guests collect a pass at the desk opposite check in, use the business class security lane and may stay up to three hours. It measures about 40 square metres, seats around 20 people and serves soft drinks, coffee, beer and wine but little food.
A stand for the jet, or not
The first four hours on the apron are free. After that the airport charges 4 euros per tonne of the aircraft's maximum weight for each day begun, and from 1 June to 30 September that rate rises by half for a stay of 24 to 48 hours, doubles for 48 to 72 hours and triples beyond 72 hours. With few stands and those summer rates, many jets leave soon after the drop for Podgorica, Dubrovnik or home, and parking at the Nikšić airfield is under discussion.
Leaving Tivat
Allow about 30 minutes at the airport with the VIP service. Aim to be airborne well before the published closing time, because the last departure of the evening is the one most likely to slip to the next morning. If the airport agrees to stay open beyond its hours, it charges 300 euros for each hour begun.
The car at the door
Your driver can wait in the VIP car park at the entrance, and the drive to Porto Montenegro takes about ten minutes. Hertz, Avis and Sixt have desks in the terminal, and taxis wait outside, where a price list at the car park gives about 10 to 15 euros to Tivat and 25 to 30 euros to Kotor; confirm the fare before you set off, or let us book the transfer with the flight.

How we plan a Tivat flight

  • Landing in good daylight. We plan arrivals to be on the ground at least half an hour before the published closing time, and keep Podgorica, which has an instrument landing system and a tower open around the clock, as the alternate.
  • Notice and papers early. We send the handling request and the passenger list well before the 36 hour limit, and add the VIP service to every booking.
  • A plan for the aircraft. We confirm whether the jet may stay at Tivat or must reposition, because that decides whether the return is a charter, an empty leg or two flights.
  • The bags that come on board. We compare the luggage list with the hold, especially for yacht weeks, when guests bring more than on a city break.
  • The last mile. We book the car to Porto Montenegro, Kotor or Budva, a tender to a yacht at anchor, or a helicopter to the coast further south.
  • Wind and birds. Crosswinds and birds can close the runway for a while, so we keep the evening flight early and tell you at once if a diversion is likely.

VIP lounge for private passengers at Tivat Airport

Four things to know before booking Tivat

Each of these points can move a departure time or change the price, so we settle them before the aircraft is confirmed.

Dusk is a hard limit
There are no night flights at Tivat in any season. A summer flight from London should leave by about 15:00 British time, and in winter the airport closes at 16:30 local time.
Notice before every flight
The airport wants 36 hours of notice for each private arrival and departure, and 96 hours for an early start before the published opening time. Short notice trips work best in spring and autumn.
Parking decides the price
When the aircraft cannot stay at Tivat, the operator either charges for extra flying to Podgorica or Dubrovnik and back, or sells the empty sectors. For a stay of several days that repositioning is often the empty leg you can buy.
A border outside Schengen
Montenegro uses the euro but is not in the EU or Schengen, so your days there do not count towards the Schengen limit. A drive to Dubrovnik, however, takes you into Croatia and the Schengen area, with EES checks at the border.

Where private travellers stay around the Bay of Kotor

Most private passengers at Tivat are heading to one of a few places on the bay or the coast just beyond it. Each has its own drive, and some have their own marina.

Porto Montenegro
The former naval base in Tivat is now a marina village with more than 500 berths, the Regent Porto Montenegro hotel, shops, restaurants and a beach club. It is the natural base for yacht owners and lies about ten minutes from the aircraft.
Kotor and Perast
The walled town of Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the baroque village of Perast opposite the islet of Our Lady of the Rocks fill with visitors by day. Small hotels and villas on the inner bay suit a quieter stay.
Luštica Bay
A resort town on the Luštica peninsula, across the bay from the airport, with The Chedi hotel, a marina and villas. The drive takes about 25 minutes.
Portonovi and Herceg Novi
On the northern shore near Herceg Novi, Portonovi combines a marina with the One&Only resort and its Chenot spa. The quickest way from the airport is the short Lepetane ferry across the narrows.
Budva and Sveti Stefan
Budva's old town and beaches lie about half an hour away, and the island village of Sveti Stefan, with Villa Miločer on the shore, about 45 minutes. Aman reopened the island in July 2026, and Villa Miločer in May.
Mamula Island
The nineteenth century fortress at the mouth of the bay is now a small island hotel run by Banyan Tree, reached by boat. We can book the car to the jetty and the boat together.

The extra costs of a Tivat trip

The extras on a Tivat trip are modest beside the cost of the aircraft, but a few of them catch travellers by surprise.

Band A
for UK Air Passenger Duty on jets of 5.7 tonnes or more, as Montenegro lies less than 2,000 miles from London
1 euro
tourist tax per guest per night in Tivat, half that for guests aged 12 to 18 and nothing for children under 12
18.25 euros
airport passenger and security charges for each departing passenger, normally included in the operator's price
From 40 euros
per passenger for VIP treatment at Tivat, with a minimum of 60 euros, on top of the compulsory airport handling

The UK charges Air Passenger Duty on the flight out of Britain. Montenegro sits in Band A, where a passenger in a jet of 5.7 to 20 tonnes pays 32 GBP this tax year and one in a heavier jet 142 GBP; once the 2027 to 2028 year begins on 1 April, all private jets of 5.7 tonnes and over move to 146.63 GBP. Jets under 5.7 tonnes, such as the Citation M2, pay nothing, and flights from the Channel Islands are outside the duty altogether. On 1 April 2027 flights from Scotland move to the Scottish Air Departure Tax, which is due to carry a private jet supplement of its own.

The tourist tax simply appears on the hotel or villa bill. On the aircraft side, parking beyond four hours is charged by weight and costs more from June to September, which is why a stay of several days is often cheaper with the jet repositioning. Taxi fares vary from driver to driver, and on a summer weekend the queue for the Lepetane ferry can reach 30 to 45 minutes, so a transfer booked in advance saves both money and time.

Podgorica, Dubrovnik and the other airfields near Tivat

Tivat is the closest airport to the bay and the coast. When its hours, its parking or the weather do not suit, several alternatives lie within reach.

Tivat, LYTV. The airport on the bay, with a 2,500 metre runway, compulsory handling by the airport company and paid VIP extras. Its limits are daylight operation, 36 hours of notice and very few stands for business jets.
Podgorica, LYPG. The capital's airport, about 44 kilometres east in a straight line and roughly 1h 30m by road. It has a runway of the same length with an instrument landing system from the south, a tower open around the clock and VIP lounges for private passengers at 200 euros an hour, or 300 euros for the presidential lounge, before VAT. It is the usual alternate and a common place for jets to park.
Dubrovnik, LDDU. About 41 kilometres north west as the crow flies, in Croatia, and 1h 30m to 2h by car with a border crossing into the Schengen area. It suits a trip that combines Dubrovnik and Montenegro, and usually has more room to park, although it too fills up in summer.
Nikšić, LYNK. The sports airfield of Kapino Polje, north of the bay, has a paved runway of 1,450 metres and no passenger terminal. In September 2026 the government put a review of the airfield on its list of airport priorities, and it is being discussed as a parking place for business jets from Tivat.
Tirana, LATI. Albania's main airport, about 138 kilometres to the south east, is too far for daily use but serves as an alternate when the Montenegrin airports are closed by weather.

Car waiting for private passengers at Tivat Airport

From the airport to Porto Montenegro, Kotor and the coast

Distances around the bay are short, but the coast road is narrow and slow in July and August. The times below are for a car from the airport outside the rush; summer afternoons near the gates of Kotor and weekend queues for the ferry can add a good deal.

Destination By car from the airport Notes
Porto Montenegro and Tivat centre About 10 minutes The marina, the Regent hotel and the waterfront promenade
Kotor Old Town About 15 to 20 minutes The walled town and the fortress path of San Giovanni
Perast About 30 minutes Baroque palaces facing Our Lady of the Rocks
Luštica Bay About 25 minutes The Chedi, the marina and the villas of the peninsula
Budva About 25 to 35 minutes The old town, the beaches and the nightlife of the Budva Riviera
Sveti Stefan and Miločer About 45 minutes The island hotel and Villa Miločer, both run by Aman
Herceg Novi and Portonovi About 35 to 45 minutes By the Lepetane ferry, or well over an hour round the bay
Cetinje About 1 hour The old royal capital in the mountains above Budva
Podgorica About 1h 30m The capital and its airport
Dubrovnik About 1h 30m to 2h Across the Croatian border, where queues can be long in summer

The Lepetane ferry crosses the narrows of the bay in about five minutes and runs every 15 to 20 minutes, day and night, from early May to mid October, and every 20 minutes from 06:00 to midnight in winter. It costs 5 euros per car, paid in cash, and avoids a drive of more than an hour around the inner bay.

For Sveti Stefan or the southern coast on a busy Saturday, a helicopter from the airport can save the best part of an hour, weather permitting, and a tender can meet guests at Porto Montenegro for a yacht lying at anchor.

Popular routes between the UK and Tivat, and which way they run empty

Each figure below is the cost of the entire jet on a repositioning trip that goes ahead whether or not you book, never a price per seat. Flying times are from runway to runway and leave out the drive at each end. Because the list mixes a six seat Citation M2 with a nine seat Challenger 350 and everything between, distance alone does not set the price. Travellers who cannot move their dates can compare each line with the full charter fares listed near the start.

Tivat sectors cluster on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from June to September, and on the days when yachts change guests. Outside the season they are rarer, but the jets that do fly in winter usually leave empty the same day.

Border and customs rules for Montenegro

Montenegro is a candidate for EU membership but sits outside both the EU and Schengen, so its border rules differ from those of Croatia next door. These are the points British travellers ask about most.

  • Your passport. Montenegrin officers want a British passport that is under ten years old on the day you arrive and still has three months to run after your planned departure.
  • 90 days of your own. British visitors need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180 day period, and because Montenegro is outside Schengen those days are counted separately from time spent in France, Italy or Croatia.
  • Registration within 24 hours. Every visitor has to be registered with the local tourist office or the police within 24 hours of arrival. Hotels do this for you and collect the tourist tax at the same time; in a private villa, check that the owner or agent has done it.
  • No EES at Tivat. The EU entry system does not apply in Montenegro, and passports are stamped. It does apply on the Croatian border, so a day trip to Dubrovnik means fingerprints and a photograph on your first crossing.
  • Duty free into Montenegro. From the age of 17 each traveller arriving by air may carry 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars, a litre of spirits or two litres of drinks of up to 22 per cent, four litres of still wine, two litres of beer and other goods to a value of 430 euros. Anyone carrying more than 10,000 euros in cash has to declare it to customs.
  • Medicines. Personal medicines may be carried for up to six months of use, while those containing narcotic substances are limited to 30 days and need a doctor's certificate issued within the previous 90 days.
  • VAT refunds. Shops in the tax free scheme give non residents a form that customs must stamp as the goods leave the country, within three months of the purchase. The refund is then paid by the shop on a later visit, not at the airport.
  • Coming home. Each adult flying privately into Britain may bring 270 GBP of goods without paying duty. Drink and tobacco limits come on top, and the wine left over from a yacht week usually fits within them: beer up to 42 litres, wine up to 18, spirits up to four and cigarettes up to 200. From 1 October 2026 Britain will count champagne and prosecco as wine and cider as beer for these limits.
  • Money. Prices are in euros. Cards are taken in hotels, marinas and most restaurants, but village taverns, beach stalls and the Lepetane ferry want cash.

Empty leg calendar for Tivat, month by month

Tivat has one long season, from May to September, when the marinas, villas and beach hotels are full. The winter months are quiet, and the airport's short winter hours shape every flight.

Orthodox Christmas on 7 January brings a few family flights, and superyachts wintering at Porto Montenegro keep some owners coming and going. The airport closes at 16:30.
February
QuietThin
The Mimosa Festival fills Herceg Novi with yellow blossom and parades, and Kotor holds its winter carnival. Private traffic stays light.
March
QuietFair
Yachts prepare for the season, and owners fly in for survey and refit work. Western Easter falls on 28 March in 2027, and the summer hours begin when the clocks change at the end of the month.
April
SteadyFair
Hotels on the bay reopen through the month, and owners start bringing their yachts out of winter storage.

June
BusyStrong
Long days, warm sea and weddings on the bay. Aircraft arrive every weekend, and many leave empty the same afternoon.
July
Very busyStrong
High season on the whole coast, with the KotorArt festival in Kotor. Business jet stands are scarce, and most jets drop and leave.
August
Very busyStrong
The summer carnival fills Kotor on the first weekend of August, Boka Night brings an illuminated boat parade later in the month, and the Sea Dance festival returned to Budva at the end of August 2026. The last week sends families home in large numbers.
September
BusyGood
The sea is still warm and the villas quieter, and the airport shortens its evening from 11 September.
October
SteadyFair
The airport closes at 18:00 until the clocks change, yachts leave for winter berths and the last charter guests head home.
November
QuietThin
The quietest month of the year, with winter hours to 16:30 and few private flights.
December
QuietFair
New Year concerts in Budva and Kotor bring a small rise in private flights, many of them returning empty after the drop.

The best value is on summer weekend sectors, when jets leave Tivat empty after dropping yacht and villa guests, and on the last days of August. For a trip that must happen on set days, a Tuesday to Thursday in May, June or September gives the widest choice of aircraft.

Three situations, three answers

A week on a yacht
Land on a Saturday morning, and ten minutes later you are on board at Porto Montenegro. The jet cannot usually wait a week on the apron, so it flies home empty and returns empty the following Saturday, and either leg can be bought as an empty leg.
A long weekend in Kotor and Perast
Fly out on Friday and land by about 19:00, comfortably inside the summer closing time of 19:30, stay in the old town or on the inner bay, and leave on Monday morning from 06:30, early enough for a working day in London.
Dubrovnik and Montenegro in one trip
Fly into Dubrovnik, drive down the coast to the Bay of Kotor and fly home from Tivat, or the other way round. With a sector possible at either end, the odds of finding a released flight that matches your dates roughly double.

Bringing a dog or cat to Montenegro

A dog or cat entering Montenegro from Britain needs a microchip, a rabies vaccination given at least 21 days before travel and a health certificate from an official vet issued no more than ten days before the flight. The rules can change, so we confirm the current Montenegrin requirements with your vet before the trip. On a private jet the animal flies in the cabin with you, and officials at Tivat look at its papers when you land.

Dog in the cabin of a private jet to Tivat

The return needs more care. Montenegro is not on Britain's list of approved countries for pets, so the animal needs a rabies blood test taken at least 30 days after the vaccination and may land in Great Britain only three months after that sample; having the sample taken in Britain well before departure keeps that wait from delaying the flight home. A Great Britain pet health certificate is required as well, and dogs need a tapeworm treatment by a vet between 24 and 120 hours before landing in Britain, and only approved carriers may fly them in. Please say at the outset that a dog or cat is coming, since a few aircraft owners do not allow animals.

Tivat by private jet: common questions

Which airfield is closest to Kotor for a business jet?
Tivat Airport, TIV, about 4 kilometres from Tivat, 7 kilometres from Kotor and ten minutes from Porto Montenegro. Podgorica and Dubrovnik are the usual alternates.
How many hours does it take to fly from Britain or Ireland to Tivat?
About 2h 45m to 2h 55m from the London airports, Oxford, Jersey and Southampton, 3h 00m to 3h 10m from Bristol, the Midlands, the North of England and Wales, and 3h 25m to 3h 30m from Scotland, Belfast and Dublin.
Can a private jet land at Tivat at night?
No. The runway has no edge lighting, so flights are allowed only in daylight: 06:30 to 19:30 local time in high summer and 07:00 to 16:30 in winter, with daylight extensions possible if the airport agrees, requested 96 hours ahead for an early start and an hour before closing for a later finish.
Is there a private terminal at Tivat?
Not a separate building. The airport's team escorts private passengers through priority lanes, with VIP treatment at 40 euros per passenger, fast track at 20 euros and the business lounge at 8 euros. The private VIP salons of Airports of Montenegro are at Podgorica.
How much notice does Tivat need?
The airport asks for 36 hours of notice for every private flight, with the aircraft details, the handling request and a general declaration of crew and passengers.
Can the jet wait for us at Tivat?
Sometimes, but stands for business jets are few, and in summer many aircraft have to leave and park elsewhere, often at Podgorica. We confirm this before booking, as it affects the price of the return.
What does an empty leg to Tivat cost?
Our table starts at about 4,800 GBP for a Citation M2 from Jersey to Tivat and about 5,500 GBP for a Citation CJ2 from Tivat to Liverpool, in each case for the whole aircraft. Booked as full charters, the flights in the table cost between about 11,500 GBP and 29,000 GBP.
Do British visitors need a visa for Montenegro?
No. British passport holders can stay up to 90 days in any 180 without a visa, counted separately from the Schengen area, and must be registered with the authorities within 24 hours, which hotels arrange for their guests.
What taxes and charges should we expect?
Britain charges Air Passenger Duty when the jet leaves the UK: 32 GBP a head on jets of 5.7 to 20 tonnes and 142 GBP on heavier ones up to 31 March 2027, then 146.63 GBP on every private jet of 5.7 tonnes or more. Airport passenger and security charges of 18.25 euros per departing passenger are normally in the operator's price, and in Tivat the tourist tax is 1 euro per guest per night.
How do we get to Herceg Novi or Portonovi?
By car in about 35 to 45 minutes using the Lepetane ferry across the narrows, which runs day and night in summer and costs 5 euros per car, or by boat from Porto Montenegro.
And if nothing is released for my dates?
Give us the week you have in mind, how many are coming and how far the dates can move. With yacht changeovers every summer weekend and jets leaving Tivat empty after almost every drop, a sector often appears within days.

Call +44 7857 574938 , message the same number on WhatsApp , or write to flight@empty-leg.co.uk . Let us know if you are heading for a villa, a hotel or a yacht, the days that work, the size of the party, the luggage and any animal travelling with you. You will receive the matching sectors beside their charter fares, together with a plan for the daylight hours, the 36 hour notice, where the jet will park and the car at the VIP entrance.
