Empty leg flights to and from Biarritz

Biarritz is the grand resort of the French Basque coast: the Grande Plage below the Hôtel du Palais, built for Empress Eugénie, the surf at the Côte des Basques, golf courses that date back to the 1880s, and San Sebastián just across the Spanish border. Private flights land at Biarritz Pays Basque Airport, code BIQ, on the boundary of Biarritz and Anglet, about five minutes by car from the centre. From London the flight takes about 1h 40m.

Unlike Bordeaux, which never closes, this is a compact airport that shuts at night, and its business aviation terminal is operated for the airport by Onet Executive. We time every flight around the opening hours and book the stand, the terminal and the car along with it.

BIQ / LFBZ
one runway of 2,250 by 45 metres, open to traffic from early morning until about 23:00 and closed overnight

Biarritz sectors available today

The list below shows every sector we hold into or out of Biarritz, and adds San Sebastián and Pau when an aircraft is released there instead. The table after it gives the standard charter fare for each aircraft, so the discount on an empty leg is plain to see.

Ask us what is available at Biarritz right now.

This board refreshes through the day as operators release sectors, and it shows only part of the market: a large share of repositioning flights never reach a public list at all. Check back shortly, or tell us your route and dates and we will look at what operators are holding at this moment.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.

Set up an alert for Biarritz

Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up between the UK and Biarritz.

Please fill in both the departure and the arrival city.

Nothing is stored on this site. The button opens a chat with the message already written, and you send it yourself. We reply during office hours, 07:00 to 23:00, and check messages outside them too.

Why so many jets fly to Biarritz empty

The Basque coast fills up in short, sharp waves: summer holidays, festival weeks and golf weekends. Operators drop a party and fly home rather than wait a fortnight, and that leaves one empty direction on most trips.

Summer villas and hotels
From July to the end of August British, Parisian and Spanish families fill villas in Biarritz, Guéthary and Saint Jean de Luz. Saturday changeovers bring one jet in full and another out empty, often within the same hour.
Golf on the Basque coast
Golf du Phare hosts the Biarritz Cup, one of the oldest amateur tournaments in the world, first played in 1898, and Chiberta, Ilbarritz and Chantaco are all within twenty minutes of the runway. Golfing weekends mean Friday arrivals and Sunday departures.
Surf and the Landes beaches
The Côte des Basques is where surfing arrived in France in the 1950s, and Hossegor to the north draws surfers every autumn when the Atlantic swell builds. Surf trips often last a week or more, so the aircraft that brings the group seldom waits for it.
San Sebastián across the border
Donostia, as the Basques call it, is famous for its restaurants and its film festival in September. Its own airport has a short runway and strict limits, so a large share of private visitors land at Biarritz and drive 45 minutes along the coast.
Industry and business
Dassault Aviation builds Falcon fuselage sections and composite parts at its Biarritz site, and the aerospace plants of the Adour valley and Pau bring engineers, suppliers and managers through the airport during the week.

Released sectors are most common from late June to mid September, around Easter and the May bank holidays, and on the Monday after a golf or festival weekend. In winter the coast is quiet, and empty legs appear mainly on business routes.

Biarritz Pays Basque Airport in detail

The airport returned to service on 11 April 1954 and sits on land shared by Anglet and Biarritz, a few kilometres south east of the town centre. The present passenger terminal was inaugurated in February 1994, and the runway was rebuilt in 2019 in works lasting more than a year, with a month of complete closure. The airport handled 935,404 passengers in 2025, and its terminal is sized for about 1.4 million a year, so queues rarely build even in August. Concorde and a Boeing 747 have both landed here, and during the G7 summit of August 2019, held at the Hôtel du Palais, most delegations flew into Biarritz, although Air Force One went to Bordeaux because this runway was judged too short for it. Private jets account for about 2,000 movements a year.

Codes BIQ (IATA) and LFBZ (ICAO)
Location Anglet and Biarritz, 5 minutes from Biarritz centre, 15 minutes from Bayonne and 20 minutes from Saint Jean de Luz
Runway One runway, 09/27, of 2,250 metres by 45 metres, with an ILS
Elevation 75 metres, or 245 feet, above sea level, a short distance from the Atlantic
Opening hours From early morning until about 23:00 local time on weekdays, with weekend and holiday hours set by the airline schedule; no movements at night
Slots No slot restrictions, but parking must be requested in advance
Business aviation A dedicated terminal operated by Onet Executive, a Sky Valet Connect member, with extended hours arranged on request
Aprons Four aprons with more than twelve stands and three helicopter spots, able to take aircraft up to an Airbus A321 or Boeing 737
Hangars Hangar H8 of 7,000 square metres for aircraft up to 32 metres in wingspan, and a smaller hangar for light aircraft
Fuel Supplied by Air BP, with VAT exemption where the flight qualifies
Business aircraft The Citation Mustang, the Legacy 650 and the Phenom 300 were the private types seen most often in 2025
Airlines easyJet flies to Gatwick in season and Ryanair to Stansted, so companions on scheduled flights have options from London
Time zone Central European Time, one hour ahead of London all year

For crews the airport is straightforward in daylight: a long runway with an ILS, generous aprons for its size and no slot pressure. The limits are the opening hours and the weather. Atlantic fronts can bring strong crosswinds and low cloud in winter, and crews then plan a diversion to one of the larger airports nearby. A late arrival cannot simply be absorbed after 23:00, so we plan the day with a margin and warn you early if a delay threatens the closing time.

The business aviation terminal at Biarritz: lounge, border and bags

Private passengers do not pass through the airline hall. The business aviation terminal opened in June 2013 on the site of the old passenger terminal, the one seen in the 1981 film Hôtel des Amériques, and it has its own entrance, car park and staff. This is how a visit through it works.

Onet Executive at Biarritz
Onet Executive operates the airport's business aviation terminal as a member of the Sky Valet Connect network and handles every private flight, from the parking request to the departure. There is one point of contact for the crew, the passengers and the concierge, which keeps changes simple.
Your car on the apron
Parking in front of the terminal is private and free, and vehicles can be allowed airside, so a driver can bring passengers to the foot of the steps. Screening is not compulsory for private flights here, and the terminal opens straight onto the aircraft.
The VIP lounge
A newly decorated lounge offers snacks and drinks, international newspapers and free wireless internet. It suits a short wait rather than a long meal, and hot food comes from the caterer or from the restaurant in the main terminal.
Staffed hours
The desk keeps daytime hours that change with the season, about 07:00 to 19:00 in summer and 08:00 to 17:00 in winter, while the airport accepts business flights from 06:30 to 23:00 on request, so staff can come in earlier or stay later. We arrange any extension when we book the flight.
Catering by a star chef
The airport offers catering prepared by a star chef, ordered easily through its partner Delisky, so Basque dishes can be waiting on board. Orders placed the day before give the widest choice.
Border police and tax refunds
Passport and customs checks take place within the terminal, and the tax refund service for purchases made in France is available on request. On your first Schengen entry the EES also records four fingerprints and a photograph.
Bags and surfboards
The handling team carries luggage between the hold and the car. Surfboards, golf bags and bicycles are common here, so tell us their number and length when you book, and we will choose an aircraft whose hold takes them.
Concierge and helicopters
The concierge books taxis, hire cars and chauffeurs, and a private helicopter transfer can be arranged on request, useful for a quick hop to San Sebastián, Hossegor or a villa in the hills.
The main terminal next door
The private terminal has no restaurant of its own. In the main passenger terminal, open from 05:30 to 22:30, Belharra serves Basque dishes at table from lunchtime and quick meals from early morning, and there is a Relay newsagent with regional products and a Quiksilver surf shop. Companions on easyJet or Ryanair flights use this building.
Meeting rooms
The airport's business centre has meeting rooms for two to fifty people, with screens, video projection and catering, so a board meeting can be held on arrival and the jet can leave the same afternoon.
Crew lounge and ramp services
Pilots have their own lounge with free wireless internet, a flight operations desk and the same concierge. Air BP supplies the fuel, and the terminal provides a 28 volt ground power unit, an air start unit, mobile steps and cleaning of the cabin and the exterior.
Leaving Biarritz
Arrive twenty to thirty minutes before departure. Because the airport closes at night, the closing time matters, and we schedule evening departures well before 23:00.

How we plan a Biarritz flight

  • Parking first. We request the stand from the airport as soon as the flight is confirmed, since August weekends fill the aprons.
  • The clock. We check the opening hours for the day of travel and keep a margin before closing time.
  • Surfboards and golf bags. We match the hold to the kit you are bringing.
  • The French tax. The solidarity tax on the flight home appears as its own line in the quote.
  • Across the border. Drivers, restaurant tables in San Sebastián and helicopter transfers are booked with the flight.

Four points to settle before booking Biarritz

Most Biarritz trips run smoothly, but these four questions decide the aircraft and the timing.

Closed overnight
The runway is in use from early morning until about 23:00 on weekdays, with weekend and holiday hours set by the airline schedule, so a night arrival from Scotland or a late dinner departure needs planning.
Solidarity tax on the return
The homeward leg costs more: on a charter flight France charges each departing passenger 420 euros in a jet flying to a European airport, half that in a turboprop.
San Sebastián is limited
Hondarribia airport, just across the Bidasoa, has a runway of 1,754 metres and movement limits agreed between France and Spain, so most jets land at Biarritz.
Summer demand
In August the aprons and the handling team are busy, and a stand needs booking as early as the aircraft.

From the airport to Biarritz, the coast and San Sebastián

Everything on the Basque coast is close to the runway. The times below are by car outside the summer traffic; in July and August allow more on the coast road. Bus line 3 of the Txik Txak network links the airport with Bayonne station and Saint Jean de Luz.

Destination By car from the airport What is there
Biarritz centre and the Grande Plage About 5 to 10 minutes The Hôtel du Palais, the casino, the Rocher de la Vierge and the old port
Anglet beaches and Chiberta About 10 minutes Long surfing beaches, pine forest and the Chiberta golf course
Bayonne About 15 minutes The old town on the Nive, Bayonne ham and the July festival
Guéthary and Bidart About 15 minutes Clifftop villages with small surf spots and villas
Saint Jean de Luz About 20 minutes The harbour, the beach and the Chantaco golf course
Espelette and the Basque hills About 30 minutes Espelette peppers, farm inns and the foothills of La Rhune
Hossegor About 35 minutes Surf beaches, the lake and holiday homes in the Landes
San Sebastián About 45 minutes La Concha bay, the old town and its bars and restaurants

France and Spain are both in the Schengen area, so there is no fixed border post on the road to San Sebastián, but France still runs spot checks at the frontier, and passports must be carried. A helicopter covers the same distance in fifteen to twenty minutes when a landing site is available.

What a Biarritz trip costs on top of the aircraft

The charter or empty leg price covers the jet and the crew. Taxes and ground services come on top, and the French solidarity tax is the largest of them.

Band A
for UK Air Passenger Duty on a jet of 5.7 tonnes or more, as Paris, the capital used for the calculation, lies within 2,000 miles of London
420 euros
French solidarity tax for each passenger flying out of France by chartered business jet to a European airport, or 210 euros by turboprop, since 1 March 2025
Handling
charged by Onet Executive for the lounge, the formalities, the ramp services and the baggage
Parking
stand fees rise with each extra night on the ground, which matters on a two week villa stay

On the flight out, UK Air Passenger Duty applies. Until 31 March 2027 the Band A charge is 32 GBP a passenger in a jet from 5.7 tonnes up to 20 tonnes, and 142 GBP in a jet of 20 tonnes or more; from 1 April 2027 all private jets from 5.7 tonnes pay 146.63 GBP a passenger. Jets lighter than 5.7 tonnes are exempt, as are departures from the Channel Islands, and Scotland starts its own Air Departure Tax in April 2027. The French tax applies to the return, and a family of five in a light jet pays 2,100 euros under it.

San Sebastián, Pau and the other airports near Biarritz

Biarritz is the natural choice for the Basque coast, but these airfields serve nearby trips and act as alternates when the weather or the opening hours close the door.

Biarritz Pays Basque, LFBZ. The main airport for the coast, with a 2,250 metre runway, its own business aviation terminal and operations from early morning to 23:00.
San Sebastián, LESO. At Hondarribia, about 30 kilometres south west on the Spanish side of the Bidasoa, with a 1,754 metre runway and daily movement limits; handy for the city but tight for larger jets.
Pau Pyrénées, LFBP. About 100 kilometres to the east, with a runway of 2,500 metres, for the Béarn, the Pyrenees ski resorts and the local aerospace industry.
Bordeaux Mérignac, LFBD. About 165 kilometres to the north, open around the clock, the alternate when Biarritz is closed at night.

Popular routes from the UK and Ireland to Biarritz, and which way they run empty

The fares below buy the complete cabin on a repositioning flight that is going ahead regardless. Times are airborne times only. The Basque coast is within reach of the smallest jets, so our routes range from a Citation M2 or CJ2 to a Challenger 350, and the cabin you choose affects the price more than the distance. If your dates are set in stone, compare them with the charter table under the list of live sectors.

Arriving in France from Britain: border and customs

A flight from Britain to Biarritz crosses the external border of the EU and Schengen, and the French authorities check passengers in the business aviation terminal. The list below covers the points travellers to the Basque coast ask about most.

  • Passport. It must have been issued less than ten years before your arrival and still be valid three months after the date you plan to leave the Schengen area.
  • Length of stay. Crossing into Spain does not restart the clock: the visa free limit of 90 days in a rolling 180 covers France and Spain together.
  • EES. The first entry records four fingerprints and a facial photograph; children under 12 give only the photograph.
  • Goods brought in. The duty free limits for entering France from Britain are lower than many expect: a litre of spirits or two litres of sparkling or fortified wine, 4 litres of still wine, 16 litres of beer, a carton of 200 cigarettes and 430 euros of other goods per adult.
  • Food. Meat and dairy products from Britain may not be brought into the EU, so picnic supplies should be bought in France.
  • Cash. The euro is used on both sides of the border, and 10,000 euros or more in cash must be declared.
  • Coming home. Britain's duty free allowance per adult after a private flight is 270 GBP of goods, 18 litres of wine, 42 of beer, 4 of spirits and 200 cigarettes; from 1 October 2026 sparkling wine is counted as wine and cider as beer, and anything over the limits is taxed.

Three situations, three answers

Two weeks on the Basque coast
Fly in on a Saturday, drive fifteen minutes to a villa in Bidart or Guéthary and fly home two weeks later. Each direction is booked separately, and the Saturday changeovers of other families often supply a matching empty leg.
A golf weekend
Land on Friday morning, play Chiberta in the afternoon and the Golf du Phare on Saturday, and leave on Sunday evening before the airport closes. Bags and clubs travel in the hold, and the car meets you at the aircraft.
Dinner in San Sebastián
Arrive at lunchtime, drive 45 minutes across the border, spend the evening in the old town and stay the night. The next morning the jet takes you home, or on to another destination in Europe.

Travelling with a dog or cat

Your pet needs a microchip fitted before its rabies vaccination, and at least 21 days must pass after the vaccination before travel. An official vet then issues an animal health certificate no more than ten days before you arrive in France. The handling team presents the animal and its papers to customs in the terminal, and one owner may bring no more than five pets. Owners of fighting breeds should check first: French law keeps Category 1 dogs out of the country altogether and imposes conditions on Category 2.

Dog in the cabin of a private jet to Biarritz

The return is stricter: France is not on Britain's tapeworm exempt list, so a dog needs a vet's treatment one to five days before landing, and only an operator approved to carry pets into Britain may fly it. We confirm with the operator whether your pet can sit with you, and go through the paperwork with your vet well before departure.

Flying privately to Biarritz: common questions

Where do private jets land for Biarritz and the Basque coast?
Biarritz Pays Basque, code BIQ, on the edge of town. Its business aviation terminal handles private flights, and Bordeaux and Pau are the usual alternates.
How long does the flight to Biarritz take from the UK and Ireland?
About 1h 20m from Jersey and 1h 25m from Guernsey, 1h 35m to 1h 45m from Southampton, London, Farnborough, Biggin Hill, Bristol, Cardiff and Oxford, 1h 50m to 2h 00m from Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds and Dublin, and 2h 10m to 2h 30m from Newcastle, Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.
Can we land at Biarritz late in the evening?
Only until about 23:00 on weekdays; at weekends and on public holidays the hours depend on the airline schedule. The airport is closed at night, so late flights either leave in good time or divert to Bordeaux, which is open around the clock.
Is a slot needed at Biarritz?
No slot is required, but the stand must be requested from the airport in advance, and in August it should be booked with the aircraft.
What does the French tax add to the flight home?
Multiply the number of passengers by 420 euros in a jet, or by 210 euros in a turboprop; the charge has applied to every charter departure from France to Europe since 1 March 2025.
How much is an empty leg to or from Biarritz?
The cheapest sectors in our list start at about 2,300 GBP from Biarritz to Jersey and 2,400 GBP from Guernsey, both in a Citation M2 and for the whole aircraft. On your own dates the eighteen routes cost from about 5,400 GBP to 24,700 GBP.
Can we fly into San Sebastián instead?
Sometimes. Its runway is 1,754 metres long and the number of movements is limited, so light jets can use it but most larger aircraft land at Biarritz, 45 minutes away by road.
Can the car drive up to the aircraft?
Yes. The airport allows vehicles airside for private flights, and security screening is not compulsory, so you step from the car onto the aircraft.
Can we take the dog to Biarritz?
Yes. Customs look at the chip, the rabies certificate and the health papers when you land, and the handling team deals with the formalities. For the return to Britain a vet must give tapeworm treatment.
Do we need a visa for France or Spain?
No. Short stays are visa free for British citizens in both countries, up to the shared Schengen limit. Once the EU's ETIAS travel authorisation comes into force, it will have to be obtained online before the trip.
And if nothing is released for my dates?
Give us your dates, the size of the group and your plans, whether villa, golf, surf or San Sebastián. Jets fly between Britain and the Basque coast every week in season, so a matching sector often appears within a few days.

Call +44 7857 574938 , message the same number on WhatsApp , or write to flight@empty-leg.co.uk . Tell us the dates, the number of travellers, any surfboards, golf clubs or pets, and where you are staying on the coast. In return you receive the matching sectors, their full charter equivalents, and a timetable built around the runway's closing time, the tax on the way home and the transfer to your address.
