Cannes has an airport that most visitors never see: Cannes Mandelieu, six kilometres west of the city centre, where there are no airline flights at all and every movement is business aviation, private flying or a helicopter. It takes jets of up to 35 tonnes, closes every evening and puts you on the seafront a quarter of an hour after the engines stop. For anything larger, or later in the evening, Nice is forty minutes up the coast.
That combination shapes the empty legs. The aircraft that use Cannes are mostly turboprops, light jets and midsize jets, the kind that move between the Riviera and the business centres of northern Europe and reposition constantly, and the town's calendar of festivals and trade fairs sends them in and out in waves.

The board below lists the sectors our operator network has released into or out of Cannes Mandelieu. On days when Cannes itself has little to show, sectors into Nice, Saint-Tropez and Toulon are listed underneath, since each of them is a drive or a helicopter hop from the Croisette.
Ask us what is available at Cannes right now.
This board refreshes through the day as operators release sectors, and it shows only part of the market: a large share of repositioning flights never reach a public list at all. Check back shortly, or tell us your route and dates and we will look at what operators are holding at this moment.
Sectors on this list do not touch Cannes itself. They are shown because the fields are close enough that the drive rarely costs you more than waiting for the right sector does. Tell us which one interests you and we will confirm it is still open.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.
Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up between the UK and Cannes.

Three patterns keep aircraft moving through Cannes Mandelieu, and each one produces repositioning flights in its own way.

The figures that decide whether a particular aircraft, crew and schedule will work at Cannes, gathered in one place.
| Codes | CEQ (IATA), LFMD (ICAO) |
| Location | Between the Estérel hills and the bay of Cannes, on the western edge of the town next to Mandelieu, six kilometres from the city centre and reached from the A8 at exit 41. Elevation about 4 metres |
| Runways | Main runway 17/35 of 1,540 by 45 metres, a short runway 04/22 of 760 metres used mainly by helicopters and light aircraft, and a grass strip for light aircraft |
| Aircraft limits | Jets up to 35 tonnes and turboprops up to 22 tonnes, and jets must meet the Chapter 3 noise standard with a margin of at least 13 EPNdB. A Falcon 7X or 8X fits under the weight limit; a Global 6000 or a Gulfstream G650 does not and goes to Nice |
| Operating hours | Daytime only, on a fixed timetable. The airport opens at 08:00 all year and in 2026 closes at 20:00 until 8 March and from 19 October, at 21:00 from 9 March to 3 May and from 24 August to 18 October, and at 22:00 from 4 May to 23 August. There is no night operation and no extension, so a late aircraft is sent to Nice |
| Slots and permission | From mid May to mid September Cannes is a slot coordinated airport, and every movement needs a slot requested through COHOR. Special procedures, including prior permission, apply during the Film Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix. Handling is compulsory for every aircraft on the FBO apron and for any aircraft over 3.5 tonnes parked elsewhere |
| Crew requirements | Cannes is a category B aerodrome, so the captain must have been trained on it, and every crew flying an instrument approach completes the airport's mandatory briefing first. The approach itself ends in a circling manoeuvre along a prescribed track. Not every operator keeps its captains current for it, which is one reason fewer aircraft can accept a Cannes booking than a Nice one |
| Wind and weather | Landing on runway 17 is limited to a light tailwind, and in a westerly or north westerly wind a jet that cannot use the short runway has to divert, usually to Nice. From April to October firefighting aircraft have priority over everyone else |
| Customs and border control | Available on request. A flight from the UK arrives from outside Schengen, so the handler books customs and the border police in advance, and each British passenger is registered in the EU Entry/Exit System on the first visit |
| Traffic | 12,857 business aviation movements in 2023, 21st in Europe on EBAA figures. Light aircraft and helicopters make up most of the remaining traffic, and there are no scheduled flights |
| Services | Jet A-1 and Avgas from Air BP, delivered by two jet fuel trucks and an Avgas truck, with a self service Avgas station as well. More than 20,000 square metres of hangars, maintenance by resident companies on request and 24 hour video surveillance. The airport and its FBO are run by Aéroports de la Côte d'Azur, the operator of Nice and Saint-Tropez La Môle as well |
Cannes Mandelieu has a single terminal, and the FBO in it is Sky Valet, the business aviation brand of Aéroports de la Côte d'Azur, with a network that now covers more than forty airports in six countries. At Cannes it looks after private passengers from the aircraft on the apron to the car at the door. The building is small and unhurried, and it has something rare at a private terminal: a proper restaurant.
Everything at Cannes is close together: the car park, the lounge, the restaurant and the apron are within a few steps of each other, and the boats at the Port du Béal are five minutes away.
Arrive fifteen minutes before a departure from Cannes, and watch the clock on the way in rather than on the way out. The airport closes at its set evening hour without exception, so an aircraft delayed leaving London can find Cannes shut when it gets there and land at Nice instead.

Cannes is quicker and calmer than Nice, and it pays for that with a set of limits that every booking has to respect.
For an empty leg passenger these limits have an upside. Fewer aircraft and fewer crews can accept a Cannes booking, so an operator with a suitable jet already on the apron has every reason to fill its return flight, and the sectors it releases often stay on sale for a day or two.

Cannes is a small airport with modest ground charges, but a flight home still carries the French passenger tax, and the aircraft type decides how much of it you pay.
The French tax applies to every passenger on a charter flight of nineteen seats or fewer leaving a French airport, and Cannes is no exception. On a flight to Britain it costs 420 euros per passenger in a jet and 210 euros in a turboprop, so six passengers flying home from Cannes in a PC-12 pay 1,260 euros between them and the same six in a Phenom 300 pay 2,520. An empty leg with passengers aboard is charged exactly like any other flight, while a flight into Cannes from Britain pays nothing on the French side.
What an empty leg saves at Cannes is the positioning. A charter from Cannes to Britain often includes the cost of bringing a suitable aircraft down first, and a stay of several days may include taking it away and back again. A repositioning sector carries none of that, because the operator is flying it anyway.
When Cannes does not fit the aircraft, the hour or the weather, one of these usually does, and some of them are the better choice in their own right.
Cannes Mandelieu sits on the right side of town for most of what brings people here. Times below are by road outside the rush, with the helicopter where it makes sense.
| Destination | By car | By helicopter | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Croisette and the Palais | 15 to 20 min | None needed | Straight along the coast road, slower in festival weeks |
| Théoule and the Estérel | 10 to 15 min | None needed | West along the coast, away from the town traffic |
| Mougins | 15 to 20 min | None needed | Villas, restaurants and the Royal Mougins golf course |
| Sophia Antipolis | 20 to 25 min | None needed | The technology park, for a working visit |
| Grasse | 25 to 30 min | None needed | Up into the hills, and the perfume houses |
| Antibes and Juan les Pins | 25 to 30 min | None needed | Along the coast or via the motorway |
| Nice Côte d'Azur Airport | 30 to 40 min | About 10 min | For a connection to a scheduled flight or a larger aircraft |
| Monaco | 55 to 70 min | About 12 min | Much longer on a Grand Prix or yacht show weekend |
| Saint-Tropez | 1h 15m to 1h 30m | About 15 min | By sea from the Port du Béal, or by helicopter in summer |
The quickest route to a boat is the one that never touches a road. Sea Valet takes you from the aircraft to the Port du Béal in five minutes, and from there a tender reaches a yacht anchored off the Croisette or the Îles de Lérins in a few more.

The aircraft that fit Cannes are the light and midsize jets that fly most British routes to the south of France, so the list covers most UK airports with business jets on them. Figures are guides for the whole aircraft flying a repositioning sector, before passenger taxes; the price table near the top shows what the same aircraft costs as a charter.
| Route | Flight time | Empty leg from | Peak | Which direction runs empty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jersey to Cannes | 1h 45m | 4,100 GBP | May to September | Back to Jersey after owners have been dropped for a long weekend |
| Cannes to Guernsey | 1h 50m | 4,200 GBP | June to September | Both, and seldom enough to register rather than watch |
| Southampton to Cannes | 1h 50m | 4,700 GBP | May and September | Towards Southampton after the yacht shows, towards Cannes when owners return |
| Cannes to Farnborough | 1h 50m | 7,900 GBP | May to October | Home to Farnborough after festival and fair drops |
| London to Cannes | 1h 55m | 4,900 GBP | All year, busiest March to October | Both, every week, with extra sectors around each festival |
| Cannes to Biggin Hill | 1h 55m | 4,700 GBP | May to September | Back to Biggin Hill once weekend guests have been dropped |
| Bristol to Cannes | 2h 00m | 5,000 GBP | July and August | Back to Bristol in the school holidays |
| Cannes to Birmingham | 2h 05m | 6,900 GBP | May to September | Towards Birmingham after drops, the other way at the end of a stay |
| Cardiff to Cannes | 2h 05m | 5,200 GBP | July and August | Both, and thinly. Worth registering |
| Manchester to Cannes | 2h 10m | 7,200 GBP | May to September | Both, with MIPIM and the Film Festival adding business traffic |
| Cannes to Leeds | 2h 15m | 7,500 GBP | June to September | Back to Leeds Bradford, mostly after weekend drops |
| Liverpool to Cannes | 2h 15m | 7,500 GBP | May to September | Out to Cannes empty to collect, home empty after a drop |
| Isle of Man to Cannes | 2h 25m | 9,100 GBP | June to September | Both, and rare, so register it |
| Edinburgh to Cannes | 2h 30m | 9,500 GBP | June to September | Back to Edinburgh after drops, busier in the Scottish holidays |
| Cannes to Newcastle | 2h 30m | 8,300 GBP | July and August | Towards Newcastle once families have been flown down |
| Cannes to Belfast | 2h 30m | 9,500 GBP | June to September | Back to Belfast at the start and the end of the summer |
| Cannes to Glasgow | 2h 35m | 9,700 GBP | June to September | Back to Glasgow after drops, the other way in late August |
| Aberdeen to Cannes | 2h 45m | 10,400 GBP | June to September | Both, and one of the rarest routes in the table |
The festival weeks are where these routes come alive. A London sector into Cannes the day before the Film Festival opens is full at charter price, and the same aircraft flying home empty the next morning is exactly the kind of sector worth registering for.

If you want to see what your route would cost as a standard charter, so you have something to measure an empty leg against, use the calculator below. Fill in the airports, the dates and the number of passengers, add any preference on aircraft type, and we will send a written calculation by email or messenger. Please check your contact details carefully so that we can reply quickly.
The figure the calculator returns is an estimate for planning. The firm quote comes back from our consultants with the cost broken out line by line, and the price agreed there is the price written into the contract.

If you would rather skip the arithmetic, send us the route and the dates instead and a consultant will come back with both numbers, the charter price and any empty leg that fits.
Flights from Britain into Cannes cross the external border of the Schengen area, and the paperwork follows from that.
Cannes lives by its events. The weeks when the Palais is full are the ones with the fewest cheap seats, and the days just after them are often the best of the year for a sector home.
The best months at Cannes are April, September and October, and the best days are the ones immediately after a big event closes. The weeks to book early rather than wait are the Film Festival in May and the height of the summer, when a charter is the reliable option and an empty leg is a bonus.
Tell us your route - we'll respond within the hour.
Heading south, a dog or cat needs a microchip, a rabies vaccination at least 21 days old and an animal health certificate issued by an official vet no more than ten days before the flight, because since 22 April 2026 France no longer accepts an EU pet passport held by someone living in Britain. France also refuses entry to category 1 dogs, the attack types such as pit bulls, mastiffs and tosas that have no recognised pedigree.

Coming home is the part to plan first. The operator of the aircraft must be approved to carry pets into Great Britain on that particular route, and a dog needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet one to five days before it lands, so the visit to a vet in Cannes goes into the diary with the flight. Mention the animal at the start, and we will only put forward sectors whose operator can accept it.
Call +44 7857 574938, message the same number on WhatsApp, or write to flight@empty-leg.co.uk. Send us the event or the dates, say how much give there is in them, and we will track the Cannes sectors in both directions.
