Los Angeles is the centre of the film, television and music industries, and one of the busiest private aviation markets in the world. Jets from Britain usually land at Van Nuys, in the San Fernando Valley about 18 miles northwest of downtown, where US customs officers work inside a private terminal and no airline queue stands between the aircraft and the car. Beverly Hills is about half an hour away by road.
The crossing is long, about 11h 10m westbound in a Gulfstream G650, so only ultra long range jets fly it without a stop, and the prices here are for them. Empty legs between Britain and California are rare and follow two calendars: the entertainment industry, with awards season in winter and the Cannes festival in May, and the summer, when Californian families spend weeks in Europe. Many more sectors run inside the United States, between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, Aspen, San Francisco or New York, and one of them can add a second city to a single transatlantic trip.

Empty legs to and from Los Angeles right now
The board shows every sector that touches Van Nuys, Los Angeles International, Burbank, Santa Monica, Long Beach or Hawthorne. When those are quiet it adds flights at Camarillo, Orange County and Palm Springs, each a short hop from the city by jet. Under the board, the charter list gives a full charter price for the same Gulfstream G650 on dates you pick yourself.
Ask us what is available at Los Angeles right now.
This board refreshes through the day as operators release sectors, and it shows only part of the market: a large share of repositioning flights never reach a public list at all. Check back shortly, or tell us your route and dates and we will look at what operators are holding at this moment.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.
Set up an alert for Los Angeles
Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up between the UK and Los Angeles.
Please fill in both the departure and the arrival city.

Where Los Angeles sectors come from
Three patterns send aircraft in and out of Los Angeles with nobody on board.
Awards season and the festival circuit
From the Golden Globes in January to the Oscars in March, studios, agents and actors travel between Los Angeles, New York and London, and in February the BAFTAs and the Berlin film festival pull the industry to Europe. In May the flow turns towards Cannes. Jets that deliver a producer to London or the Riviera rarely wait a week for the return, so the crossing home and the crossing out again to collect both reach the board.
Californians in Europe
Every summer Los Angeles families spend weeks in London, Provence, the Italian lakes and the Greek islands. Their aircraft fly them over in June and July and usually head back to California empty rather than wait on a European ramp, then cross empty again at the end of August to fetch them. That makes early summer the best time for a westbound sector from Britain, and late August the time for an eastbound one.
The western shuttle
Most empty sectors at Van Nuys never leave the West. Las Vegas is about an hour away, Scottsdale a little more, Aspen and Sun Valley under two hours, Cabo San Lucas just over two and Teterboro about five. Aircraft that take guests to a weekend in Las Vegas or a week in the mountains usually come home empty, and the pattern reverses at the end of each weekend. Sectors to and from Las Vegas are especially common, and most are released only two or three days before the flight.
For a traveller from Britain, a crossing to New York followed by a transcontinental empty leg from Teterboro to Van Nuys, one of the busiest private routes in America, can cost less than a nonstop charter and breaks eleven hours into two shorter flights. In autumn and winter the dry Santa Ana winds bring fires to the hills around the city, and temporary flight restrictions over a fire zone can move a departure or an approach at short notice.
Van Nuys Airport in detail
Los Angeles has half a dozen airports that take business jets, but Van Nuys handles more of them than any other, and it is where we send most flights from Britain.
Codes and name
VNY (IATA), KVNY (ICAO). Van Nuys Airport, in the Van Nuys district of the City of Los Angeles, in the middle of the San Fernando Valley.
Location
About 18 miles, or 29 kilometres, northwest of downtown and 11 miles north of Beverly Hills, on the far side of the Santa Monica Mountains, with the San Diego Freeway, Interstate 405, running past its eastern edge.
Owner and operator
The City of Los Angeles owns the airport, and Los Angeles World Airports, the city department that also runs LAX, manages it.
History
It opened on 17 December 1928 as Metropolitan Airport, became an Army airfield in 1942, home to P-38 fighters during the war, and was bought by the city from the War Assets Administration in 1949 for one dollar. It has carried the name Van Nuys Airport since 1957, and scenes from Casablanca were filmed here in 1942.
Runways
Two parallel runways: 16R/34L, 2,439 metres or 8,001 feet, with an instrument landing system, which takes every business jet, and 16L/34R, 1,223 metres or 4,013 feet, for light aircraft. The field lies 802 feet above sea level.
Traffic
More than 200,000 take offs and landings a year, which makes Van Nuys one of the busiest general aviation airports in the world, with no scheduled airline flights at all.
Tower
The control tower works from 6 am to 10.45 pm local time. The airport itself stays open around the clock, but the night rules below limit what can leave.
Customs
US Customs and Border Protection clear flights from abroad at a federal inspection station inside Signature's West terminal. The officers are on duty from 8 am to 10 pm on Monday, Thursday and Sunday, 2 pm to 10 pm on Tuesday and Wednesday and 8 am to 4 pm on Friday and Saturday, but a clearance can take an hour, so landing slots run from about 9 am to 8.30 pm, 3 pm to 8.30 pm and 9 am to 2.30 pm respectively. Each arrival is booked for a set time, give or take 30 minutes, and Van Nuys is a user fee airport, so every flight from abroad pays for the service.
Night rules
From 11 pm to 7 am only the quietest aircraft, those within a 74 decibel take off noise limit, may depart, which rules out most large jets, and from 10 to 11 pm older Stage 2 jets are kept on the ground as well. On top of that, the voluntary Quieter Nights programme asks jet operators to avoid landing or taking off between 11 pm and 7 am.
Landing fee
Since March 2026 every visiting aircraft pays 6.44 dollars per 1,000 pounds of maximum landing weight, about 540 dollars for a Gulfstream G650. Aircraft based at Van Nuys are exempt.
FBOs
Signature runs three terminals: West, with the customs station, East, and North, the former Castle & Cooke Aviation, which it bought in September 2026. Clay Lacy Aviation and Jet Aviation complete the list, while two fractional ownership programmes keep private lounges for their own owners.
Getting away
Chauffeured cars wait at the terminals. Bel Air and Beverly Hills are 25 to 45 minutes away and Santa Monica 35 to 60, and traffic in the Sepulveda Pass on the 405 decides which end of those ranges applies.
Van Nuys is our default for Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Malibu and the Valley. We quote Los Angeles International instead when the jet would land outside the Van Nuys customs hours, since officers there clear private flights every day from 7 am to 11 pm, and we suggest Burbank or Long Beach for domestic legs to addresses east or south of downtown.
Where private passengers are handled at Van Nuys
Private terminals line both sides of the Van Nuys runways, and the operator chooses one when it books the flight. Arrivals from abroad begin at Signature West, where the customs station is, while domestic flights can use any of them.
Signature West
Every flight from abroad uses Signature's West terminal at 7240 Hayvenhurst Place, because the customs suite, opened in May 2015 with its own inspection and interview rooms, is inside the building. Passengers wait in a lounge with an amenities bar, and there is a snooze room, complimentary toiletries and a conference room set up for video calls. Pets are welcome, cars can drive up to the aircraft, and GO Rentals self drive cars and parking are on site.
Signature East
Signature's East terminal, at 7155 Valjean Avenue on the other side of the field, has a private lounge, sleep rooms, a conference room with a business centre, catering on site and ramp side access for cars. It is a day use facility without overnight hangar or ramp parking, so it suits a quick domestic departure or a drop, after which the jet moves elsewhere to park.
Clay Lacy Aviation
Clay Lacy founded his company at Van Nuys in 1968 as the first jet charter firm west of the Mississippi, and in 1981 it opened an FBO built only for jets. The terminal at 7435 Valjean Avenue is open 24 hours, the company has been carbon neutral since 2019, and it offers sustainable aviation fuel and 44 charging points for electric cars. Cars can meet the aircraft on the ramp when the driver has been registered in advance.
Jet Aviation Van Nuys
Jet Aviation opened its 10,000 square foot terminal in November 2019 on a 17 acre site shared with a Gulfstream service centre. Passengers and crews have separate lounges, and a 43,000 square foot hangar and a large ramp take the biggest business jets.
Signature North, formerly Castle & Cooke
On 15 September 2026 Signature bought Castle & Cooke Aviation at 7415 Hayvenhurst Place and renamed it Signature VNY North. Passengers are greeted in a lobby with a refreshment bar, and a separate VIP facility with its own gated entrance and ramp has a large conference room, a cocktail bar and a fully equipped kitchen. It also has a restroom with a shower, 210,000 square feet of hangars stand behind it, and a concierge desk arranges cars and hotels. It is a quieter address for a business traveller who wants a meeting on arrival.
Owners only
Two fractional operators have spaces of their own. One runs a 10,000 square foot terminal with private parking, its own catering kitchen and conference rooms, and the other opened a 3,000 square foot lounge inside the Clay Lacy complex in 2021, with a gated entrance, a café and espresso bar and direct access to the ramp. Both are for their own owners and card holders; a charter passenger uses one of the FBOs.
Booking the officers
Every arrival from abroad needs landing rights requested from the Van Nuys officers for a set time, and the passenger list sent electronically to US Customs through eAPIS at least an hour before take off. The officers then meet the aircraft on the Signature West ramp, and the FBO adds its own fee for every arrival it handles for customs, on top of the landing fee.
Catering at Van Nuys
Aviation caterers across Los Angeles deliver to every terminal on the field, and many will also collect a favourite dish from a restaurant in town. Order at least a day ahead, two in awards season and Super Bowl week. After a flight from abroad, whatever is left of the catering loaded in Britain stays on the aircraft, because the US treats it as regulated waste.
LAX private terminals
At Los Angeles International, Signature at 6201 West Imperial Highway is open 24 hours with its own customs and immigration area, a sleep lounge, conference rooms, an amenities bar and covered parking. Atlantic Aviation, further along the same road, clears arrivals on its ramp and offers a concierge, a conference room, a free shuttle and wireless internet that reaches the aircraft. Private aircraft are cleared from 7 am to 11 pm every day, and each landing has to take place within 15 minutes of its booked time.
PS for airline passengers
LAX also has PS, a private terminal for travellers on scheduled flights. Guests wait in a private suite or a shared salon with food from its own chef, pass their own TSA checkpoint and are driven across the airfield to the aircraft while porters bring the bags, and arriving international passengers clear customs there too. In 2026 a suite for up to four costs about 4,950 dollars a visit and a salon place about 1,295 dollars a person for non members. It is a comfortable fallback when only one direction of the trip is private.
Semi private seats
For one or two travellers heading on to Aspen, Las Vegas, Cabo or Hawaii, a whole jet is not the only answer. Aero sells single seats on its jets from its own lounge at Van Nuys, with champagne and snacks before boarding, and JSX flies from private terminals at Burbank, Orange County and, since January 2026, Santa Monica to Las Vegas, Scottsdale and other western cities.
Which terminal we pick depends on who is travelling and why: a family bound for Bel Air wants the quickest road south, a producer due in Century City wants a meeting room, and a crew staying a week wants a hangar. The quote names the terminal, and we give it to the driver and the caterer well before departure. Hangar space in Los Angeles is tight in awards season and around the Super Bowl, so a jet staying more than a few nights may have to park at another airport.
The terminal from a passenger's side
After eleven hours over Greenland, Canada and the Rockies, the arrival at Van Nuys is calm and private, if not always quick.
ARRIVAL
Officers inside the terminal
The jet parks on the Signature West ramp, and passengers carry their passports a few steps into the inspection room inside the building while line staff wheel in the bags for the officers to see. Once the officers are done, the same staff take the luggage straight to the car at the front door. Operators plan on about an hour for a typical clearance, so allow up to that from landing to driving away; after a domestic flight the car can leave within minutes.
DOCUMENTS
Passport, ESTA and one form
An ESTA, a passport valid for the whole stay and the address where you will sleep are usually all the officers need, alongside the manifest the operator filed before take off. Fingerprints and a photograph may be taken, and one customs form covers a whole family.
AGRICULTURE
California guards its farms
The orchards, vineyards and citrus groves of California make officers strict about fruit, plants, seeds and meat. Leave what remains of the catering on board, and declare any food you carry off the aircraft.
SECURITY
No checkpoint before boarding
Charter passengers on a standard Gulfstream G650, or any smaller jet, pass no TSA checkpoint: the crew or the FBO compares passports with the manifest, and perfume, wine and other liquids stay in the cabin without airline limits. On heavier types such as the G650ER or the Global 7500 flown by an American charter operator, federal rules require passengers and bags to be screened, usually at the FBO.
LUGGAGE
Golf bags, skis and boards
The hold of a G650 takes about 5.5 cubic metres and can be reached during the flight. Golf bags and skis fit easily, while a long surfboard depends on the size of the hold door, so mention it when booking.
TIMING
Pick the day, then the hour
Van Nuys takes arrivals from abroad only from about 3 pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and only until about 2.30 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. On summer timings that means leaving London between noon and 5 pm for a Tuesday or Wednesday landing, by 11 am for a Friday or Saturday, and at any time from early morning to about 5 pm on the other days. Outside those windows the flight goes to LAX, where officers stay until 11 pm.
THE 405
Through the Sepulveda Pass
Between the Valley and the Westside, the San Diego Freeway climbs through the Sepulveda Pass, one of the slowest stretches of road in California. It jams southbound in the morning and northbound in the evening, so a landing around midday, or a route through Coldwater Canyon or Beverly Glen, keeps the drive to Beverly Hills near half an hour.
WAITING
Lounges, not a restaurant
Every terminal has a lounge with coffee, drinks, snacks and wireless internet; Signature West adds an amenities bar, and Signature North, the former Castle & Cooke, a cocktail bar in its VIP facility. There is no longer a restaurant on the airport: the 94th Aero Squadron closed in 2022 and the Airtel Plaza hotel on the edge of the field, with its dining rooms, in October 2025. For a proper meal, order catering or book a table in Sherman Oaks or Studio City, 10 to 20 minutes away.
FRESHEN UP
A shower before the meeting
Signature North has a restroom with a shower, and Signature West stocks complimentary toiletries, so after eleven hours in the air it is possible to change and go straight to a lunch in Century City.
RAMP ACCESS
Driving onto the apron
Signature West offers ramp side access for cars, and most terminals allow it for departures once the driver's name and number plate have been sent ahead. Arriving from abroad, passengers meet the car only once clearance is done.
DEPARTURE
Home without a passport queue
Nobody stamps you out of the United States: the operator sends the passenger list to the authorities before take off, and at the terminal the only check is the crew's. Allow 20 to 30 minutes from the car to the aircraft.
BAGGAGE
No check in desk
On the way out, line staff take the bags from the car, at the terminal door or beside the aircraft, and load them into the hold, so nobody queues at a desk or carries a label. Before a full fuel crossing the crew may ask in advance how many bags are coming and roughly what they weigh, since an eleven hour flight leaves less margin than a hop to Las Vegas.
HELICOPTER
A rotor for the last miles
Signature handles helicopters at both Van Nuys and LAX, so a transfer can meet the jet on the ramp. Los Angeles has few places where a helicopter may land, however, so it suits a hop to Catalina Island or to a property with its own approved pad better than a hotel in Beverly Hills.
NIGHT
Evening take off, afternoon landing
Most large jets cannot leave Van Nuys between 11 pm and 7 am, and the tower closes at 10.45 pm. An evening departure at about 7 pm lands in Britain in the early afternoon of the next day, which suits both the rules and the body clock.
CLOCKS
Eight hours, sometimes seven
Los Angeles runs on Pacific Time, eight hours behind Britain for most of the year. America moves its clocks on different Sundays from Britain, so for a week in autumn, 25 October to 1 November 2026, and two weeks in spring, 14 to 28 March 2027, the difference is only seven hours.
WEATHER
June gloom and Santa Ana winds
Early summer mornings on the coast often start under a grey marine layer that burns off by midday, and between October and March the hot, dry Santa Ana winds can gust across the Valley. The wind itself rarely stops a jet, but it brings fire risk, and fires can close airspace for hours.
TIPPING
Tips and the service fee
Restaurants in Los Angeles expect around 18 to 20 per cent, and some now add a service fee, which California law requires them to show clearly on the menu. Valet parking attendants and chauffeurs expect a tip as well.
SALES TAX
Close to ten per cent
Sales tax in the City of Los Angeles is 9.75 per cent, and some neighbouring cities charge a little more. Hotels add an occupancy tax of their own, and none of it is refunded to visitors on departure.
BY AIRLINE
Heathrow and LAX
British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, American Airlines and United link Heathrow and LAX nonstop every day, so when an empty leg covers only half of the trip, the other half can be flown in first class on one of them.
PETS
California and the rabies record
In California, dogs over four months old need proof of rabies vaccination, while cats need nothing from the state. Signature West welcomes pets, and the federal CDC import rules apply on top.
Customs at Van Nuys are rarely the difficult part; the weekday, the freeway and the fire season are what need planning, and all three are settled when the flight is booked.
Four rules that shape a Los Angeles trip
Only the longest range jets
London to Van Nuys is about 4,700 nautical miles, some 1,700 more than New York. Only ultra long range types cover that distance in one go, among them the Gulfstream G650, the Bombardier Global 6000 and 7500 and the Dassault Falcon 8X. Anything smaller, such as a G450 or a Challenger 650, has to land once for fuel, usually in Canada or on the east coast, and loses about two hours.
The ESTA depends on the operator
An ESTA works on a private jet only if the operator is an approved signatory carrier of the Visa Waiver Program. It is the first thing we check on a Los Angeles quote, since an operator outside the programme would leave every passenger needing a visa.
Match the weekday to customs
Van Nuys clears arrivals from abroad on a timetable that changes through the week, while LAX clears them from 7 am to 11 pm every day. We set the departure time from Britain around the day you land, and move the arrival to LAX if the Van Nuys window is closed.
Choose the airport by district
Van Nuys suits Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Malibu and the Valley, Burbank suits Pasadena and the studios, and Long Beach or Orange County suit addresses in the south. The wrong choice can add an hour on the freeway at each end of the stay.
Get the aircraft, the operator, the weekday and the airport right, and the only remaining challenge is eleven hours in the air, which a G650 cabin with a proper bed makes surprisingly easy.
What the ground costs in Los Angeles
Airport charges in Los Angeles are small beside the price of the crossing; the new landing fee at Van Nuys, the customs charge and British duty make up most of the rest.
On the invoice
The Van Nuys landing fee of 6.44 dollars per 1,000 pounds, about 540 dollars for a G650, the FBO's handling fee, often reduced when the jet takes fuel, Signature West's charge for the customs visit and any nights of parking
US taxes and fees
America's international arrival and departure tax, 23.40 dollars per passenger in each direction for charter flights in 2026, together with the customs and agriculture user fees, which operators include in their quotes
Air Passenger Duty
Band B, because the band follows the distance from London to Washington rather than to Los Angeles: 1,097 GBP per passenger at the higher rate until March 2027 and 1,132.76 GBP from April 2027
Britain charges the duty once, when the flight leaves a UK airport, and not at all on a departure from Jersey or Guernsey. The change in April 2027, when the higher rate extends to every private jet of 5.7 tonnes and above, matters little on this route, because the jets able to fly it nonstop already pay the higher rate.
Operators seldom leave an ultra long range jet idle in California for a fortnight, so a two week stay usually means four crossings: out full, home empty, out empty and home full. The two empty ones are the sectors that appear on the board, and our quote for your own trip shows the landing fee, the customs charge, the car and any onward hop beside the price of the aircraft.
Give us your phone number and we'll call you back
LAX, Burbank and the other airports around Los Angeles
The Los Angeles basin offers a wide choice of airports for business jets, and the best one depends on the address, the hour and whether the flight arrives from abroad.
Los Angeles International, LAX. About 12 miles southwest of downtown, beside the ocean, with private terminals run by Signature and Atlantic and customs for private aircraft every day from 7 am to 11 pm. The fallback when Van Nuys customs are closed and the nearest customs airport to Santa Monica, Manhattan Beach and Playa Vista, but airline traffic makes taxiing slower and handling dearer.
Burbank, BUR. Hollywood Burbank Airport, about 8 miles east of Van Nuys and a few minutes from the big studios, with two runways of up to 6,886 feet and a new airline terminal due to open on 13 October 2026. Atlantic Aviation and Hollywood Burbank Jet Center look after private flights. Handy for Pasadena, Glendale and the studios, and it has no mandatory curfew, although operators are asked to avoid late night flights.
Santa Monica, SMO. Minutes from the beach and Brentwood, but its runway was cut to 3,500 feet in 2017, too short for most larger jets. Take offs are banned late at night, and the city plans to close the airport at the end of 2028. It suits light jets on short domestic hops only.
Hawthorne and Long Beach, HHR and LGB. Hawthorne, with a 4,884 foot runway, lies about two miles from SoFi Stadium and next door to SpaceX, and in November 2025 the air taxi maker Archer agreed a 126 million dollar deal to take over the airport's lease and build a hub for the 2028 Olympic Games. Long Beach, about 20 miles south of downtown, has long runways, Signature and Atlantic Aviation, and suits the ports, Palos Verdes and the northern edge of Orange County.
Orange County, SNA. John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana serves Newport Beach, Laguna Beach and Irvine. Its famous curfew binds the airlines, while business jets are not held to it but must meet the airport's own noise limits, which are strictest at night.
Camarillo and Santa Barbara, CMA and SBA. Camarillo, about 35 miles west of Van Nuys in Ventura County, is a quiet field closer to western Malibu and Ojai, and Santa Barbara's airport serves Montecito and the wine country of the Santa Ynez Valley, some two hours up the coast from the city by road.
Palm Springs and Thermal, PSP and TRM. Two hours or more by road into the desert, and about half an hour by jet. Palm Springs serves the resorts, and Thermal, with its long runways, is the usual jet airport for the polo grounds of Indio, where Coachella takes place over two April weekends, when both airports fill with private aircraft.
From Van Nuys to Beverly Hills, Malibu and beyond

Popular routes between the UK and Los Angeles, and which way they run empty
The prices below are for an entire Gulfstream G650 on a sector its operator has released because the jet must cross the Atlantic in any case. The charter list under the board shows the other side of the ledger: the same aircraft on dates of your own choosing costs well over twice as much. Times cover the flight only, and the westbound time is always longer, because the aircraft flies into the jet stream.

Crossings between Britain and California are among the scarcest sectors we see, and most are released only days before the flight. Sectors between Los Angeles and New York are far more common, so a traveller with some flexibility can often cover the leg between New York and California at an empty leg price and book only the Atlantic crossing as a charter.
Online calculator
If you want to see what your route would cost as a standard charter, so you have something to measure an empty leg against, use the calculator below. Fill in the airports, the dates and the number of passengers, add any preference on aircraft type, and we will send a written calculation by email or messenger. Please check your contact details carefully so that we can reply quickly.
The figure the calculator returns is an estimate for planning. The firm quote comes back from our consultants with the cost broken out line by line, and the price agreed there is the price written into the contract.
If you would rather skip the arithmetic, send us the route and the dates instead and a consultant will come back with both numbers, the charter price and any empty leg that fits.
Arriving in Los Angeles from the UK
At Van Nuys the federal officers work inside a private terminal, so the formalities below take place a few steps from the aircraft rather than in an airline arrivals hall.
Passport. The Foreign Office asks British visitors to hold a passport valid for the whole stay, and an ESTA is issued only against an electronic passport, a condition every British passport now in circulation meets.
ESTA. The application costs about 40 dollars and should be made online at least 72 hours before departure. Once approved it allows repeated stays of up to 90 days for two years, or until the passport runs out, and the form now includes a selfie photograph.
The operator's status. Passengers can travel on an ESTA aboard a business jet only if the company flying it has signed the Visa Waiver Program agreement with the US government. Otherwise a visa is needed, and that takes weeks to obtain.
Mexico and the 90 days. A few days in Cabo or elsewhere in Mexico during the stay do not start a fresh 90 day period, and the flight back into the United States clears customs again.
Duty free into the US. Without paying duty a visitor may bring a litre of alcohol from the age of 21, 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars and, after at least 72 hours in the country, gifts worth up to 100 dollars, with up to 100 cigars among them. Every item of food must be declared, and fresh produce and meat are largely refused.
Cash. Anything over 10,000 dollars in currency or monetary instruments has to be declared to US officers when you arrive and again when you leave.
Back in Britain. On a private flight into Great Britain, travellers of 17 and over may carry 4 litres of spirits, 18 litres of wine, with sparkling wine counted in from 1 October 2026, 42 litres of beer and 200 cigarettes, and any traveller may carry other goods up to 270 GBP. Californian cheese, charcuterie and any other meat or dairy product must stay behind.
Empty leg calendar for Los Angeles, month by month
Los Angeles has no off season in the air: the entertainment calendar fills the winter, Europe draws the city away in summer, and the mountains and deserts of the West take the holidays.
Demand What brings travellers to and from Los Angeles in each month, from awards season and the big games to the summer escape to Europe, and how it moves charter prices.
Empty legs How many Los Angeles sectors a normal month tends to bring, and the usual gap between their price and a full charter.
January
BusyGood
Families fly home from Aspen, Cabo and Hawaii after New Year, and the jets sent empty to collect them fill the board, while the Golden Globes open awards season.
February
Very busyStrong
Super Bowl LXI at SoFi Stadium on 14 February 2027 brings hundreds of private jets into the basin in one weekend, and the Grammys and the BAFTAs keep the industry moving between Los Angeles and London.
March
Very busyGood
The Oscars at the Dolby Theatre on 14 March 2027 close awards season, and many jets that brought guests from London and New York fly home empty in the days before and after.
April
BusyGood
Coachella fills Palm Springs and Thermal over two weekends, 9 to 11 and 16 to 18 April 2027, and short sectors between the desert and the Los Angeles airports follow each one.
May
SteadyGood
The Cannes film festival draws producers and actors to the Riviera, so jets leave Los Angeles full and some cross back empty. Memorial Day, on 31 May 2027, opens the American summer.
June
SteadyGood
Californian families leave for Europe as the schools close, and the aircraft that carried them often cross back empty, the best time for a westbound sector from Britain.
July
SteadyGood
Hot and bright inland once the coastal fog of June has lifted. Owners who stay in America fly to Aspen, Sun Valley and Lake Tahoe, and from 14 to 30 July 2028 the city will host the Olympic Games.
August
SteadyGood
The end of the European summer brings families home, and jets cross the Atlantic empty to collect them, the most likely time for an eastbound sector to Britain.
September
SteadyFair
The Emmys in Los Angeles and the film festivals of Venice and Toronto keep the industry flying, while heat and fire risk peak inland.
October
SteadyFair
Santa Ana winds and fire season can close airspace near the hills at short notice. Business travel returns, and sectors to New York and Las Vegas are frequent.
November
BusyGood
Thanksgiving on 26 November sends families to Aspen, Cabo and Hawaii, and the jets that take them out usually return empty within a day.
December
Very busyStrong
The Christmas exodus to the mountains and beaches peaks in the week before the holiday, and the jets come back to Los Angeles empty, one of the richest weeks of the year for domestic sectors.
For a transatlantic sector, watch June and July westbound, late August eastbound and the weeks around the Oscars. For domestic legs the best moments are Sunday evenings and the days after big events: Super Bowl week, Coachella and the holidays.

Three situations, three answers
An Oscars trip from London
Fly out a few days before the ceremony on Sunday 14 March 2027 and land at Van Nuys on a Thursday, when landing slots for flights from abroad run from morning to evening. Hotels in Beverly Hills book out early, and aircraft that dropped European guests before the ceremony often fly home empty that week, so an eastbound sector to London is more likely then than in most months.
Super Bowl weekend
For Super Bowl LXI at SoFi Stadium on 14 February 2027, every airport in the basin will fill, and the FAA normally runs a reservation system for private flights at the area airports. Land at Van Nuys on the Thursday, when customs take arrivals until the evening, leave the drive to Inglewood to a chauffeur, and expect empty sectors in and out of Los Angeles all week, as jets leave to park elsewhere and return to collect their passengers.
A summer on the West Coast
Spend July and August in California and your own jet will cross the Atlantic four times, twice without you. A family with some flexibility can often travel out on a westbound sector in June or July and come home on an eastbound one at the end of August, when jets head to Europe to collect Californian families.
Flying to Los Angeles with a dog or a cat
Federal rules come from the CDC, and California adds one of its own. A dog from Britain must be at least six months old and microchipped, and must have lived for the past six months only in Britain or other countries without dog rabies; the owner submits the CDC Dog Import Form online and carries the receipt, and the dog may then land at any US airport, Van Nuys included. Cats need nothing from the CDC. California asks for proof of rabies vaccination for dogs over four months old, and a recent health certificate from your vet is still worth carrying, since operators often ask to see one.
Coming home is where the paperwork is heaviest. Britain lets a pet in from a private flight only if both the route and the operator hold approval for animals, and only when the animal is microchipped and was vaccinated against rabies at least 21 days before arrival. Dogs need a tapeworm treatment from a vet one to five days before landing, and every animal needs a Great Britain health certificate from a USDA accredited vet, endorsed by the USDA, and must land within ten days of that endorsement. Tell us about the pet at the start, and we will offer only operators that carry animals.

Questions about flying private to Los Angeles
How long will we spend in the air between London and California?
A Gulfstream G650 needs about 11h 10m to fly west and 10h 00m to come back east. From Scotland and Ireland the westbound flight is 30 to 40 minutes shorter.
Which Los Angeles airport is best for a private jet?
Van Nuys for Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Malibu and the Valley, LAX when Van Nuys customs are closed or for Santa Monica and the beach cities, Burbank for Pasadena and the studios, and Long Beach or Orange County for the south.
What is the private terminal like at Van Nuys?
There are several. Signature West has the customs suite, an amenities bar and a snooze room, Signature North, the former Castle & Cooke, a VIP facility with a cocktail bar and a shower, and Clay Lacy a terminal open around the clock with chargers for electric cars.
Is there a restaurant at Van Nuys airport?
Not any more. The terminals serve coffee, drinks and snacks, caterers bring full meals to the lounge or the aircraft, and the restaurants of Sherman Oaks and Studio City are a short drive away.
How long from landing to the car?
After a domestic flight, a few minutes, since the car can wait beside the aircraft. After a flight from abroad allow up to an hour, the time operators usually plan for a clearance, because the officers see every passenger and every bag at Signature West before anyone leaves.
Which jets reach Los Angeles without refuelling?
The Gulfstream G650, the Global 6000 and 7500 and the Falcon 8X all fly from London to Los Angeles nonstop. With a G450 or a Challenger 650 you touch down once on the way to refuel.
What does an empty leg between Britain and Los Angeles cost?
A whole Gulfstream G650 on an empty leg starts at 56,600 GBP from Los Angeles to Scotland and 66,500 GBP from London to Los Angeles. Booked as a full charter, the same crossing costs roughly 135,000 to 160,000 GBP.
Do we need an ESTA on a private flight?
Yes, for British citizens without a US visa. The ESTA only counts when the operator is a Visa Waiver Program signatory, which we verify before sending a quote.
What if we would land after Van Nuys customs close?
We never plan a landing outside the Van Nuys customs hours. The flight goes to LAX instead, where officers work until 11 pm, or stops at Shannon, where US officers clear passengers before the Atlantic crossing, so no customs visit is needed in California as long as the jet lands at the airport named in the clearance.
Can we combine Los Angeles with New York or Las Vegas?
Easily. Van Nuys to Teterboro takes about five hours and Las Vegas about an hour, and both routes carry empty sectors most weeks, so a second city often costs far less than a separate charter.
Will our driver be allowed onto the apron?
Usually yes for a departure or a domestic arrival, provided the terminal has the driver's name and number plate beforehand. Straight off an international flight, you walk through the inspection room first and find the car outside Signature West.
Is there a night curfew at Van Nuys?
For departures, yes. From 11 pm until 7 am the only aircraft allowed to leave are those quiet enough to meet a 74 decibel take off limit, and few large jets do. Arrivals face no ban, but the voluntary Quieter Nights scheme asks jets not to land late either.
Is fire season a problem for flights?
Fires in the hills, most likely in autumn and winter when the Santa Ana winds blow, can bring temporary flight restrictions and smoke that delay approaches for a few hours. Airports rarely close for long, and we watch the situation before every trip in those months.
And if nothing is released for my dates?
Give us the airport you would fly from, your dates and the number of days either side you could move. We keep watch on Van Nuys, LAX and the rest of Southern California and get in touch the moment a matching sector is released, most often in June, late August and the weeks around the Oscars.
Call +44 7857 574938 , message the same number on WhatsApp , or write to flight@empty-leg.co.uk . Tell us which part of Los Angeles you are heading to, your dates, the number of passengers and bags and whether a pet is travelling, and we will come back with suitable sectors, a full charter price, the ground costs and confirmation that the operator is cleared to carry ESTA passengers.
