No route we handle crosses more water than the one to New York, and few save a traveller more time. Private jets from Britain land at Teterboro in New Jersey, 19 kilometres from Midtown Manhattan, or at Westchester, Morristown and the other airports around the city. Passengers clear US customs in a quiet private terminal rather than in the halls of JFK, and are in Manhattan within the hour. A journey that takes a whole day through Heathrow and JFK becomes a single flight with a meeting, a show or a family dinner at the end of it.
A nonstop crossing needs a long range jet such as a Gulfstream G450, which takes about 7h 50m westbound and seven hours on the way home. Empty legs appear when those jets reposition across the Atlantic: westbound in June and July, once American families have been dropped in Europe; eastbound in late August and September, when aircraft cross to bring them home; and in both directions around the business calendar of the city. A released sector costs well under half the price of a full charter, so it pays to watch the board and to be flexible by a day or two.

Empty legs to and from New York right now
The board shows every sector that touches the New York airports, from Teterboro and Westchester to JFK, Newark, Morristown and Republic. When the city itself is quiet, it adds flights at Boston, Washington and the Hamptons, which are an hour or less away by jet. Below the board, the charter list shows what the same aircraft would cost on dates of your own.
Prices are for the whole aircraft and are shown in pounds. Some are indicative figures worked out from the distance and the class of jet; the firm price is confirmed with the operator when you send a request.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.
Set up an alert for New York
Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up between the UK and New York.
Please fill in both the departure and the arrival city.

Where New York sectors come from
Three currents of travel leave long range jets crossing the Atlantic with nobody on board.
The London and New York corridor
One of the busiest private routes across the Atlantic links the business airports around London with Teterboro all year round. Bankers, lawyers, fund managers and families fly one way and return days or weeks later, and an aircraft based in America often flies home empty after dropping its passengers at Farnborough, Luton or Biggin Hill.
The summer crossing
In June and early July American families fly to Europe for the summer, and the jets that carried them return west without passengers. From late August the flow reverses: aircraft cross east empty to collect their owners, and fly them home to New York in time for Labor Day and the new school year.
Winter in the sun and the snow
From late autumn many New York aircraft follow their owners to Palm Beach, and in December to the Caribbean, Aspen or the Alps. Those moves release transatlantic sectors before Christmas and after the ski season, as well as a steady flow of short positioning flights along the East Coast.
The board also carries sectors from Scotland and Ireland, which lie closer to America than London does. A jet that brought American golfers to St Andrews or to the west of Ireland often crosses home empty, and the shorter flight makes those sectors a little cheaper.
Teterboro Airport in detail
New York has no single private airport, but most jets from Britain land at Teterboro. These are the facts about it that a passenger and a crew should know before the flight.
Codes and name
TEB (IATA), KTEB (ICAO). It is often called New York Teterboro, although it stands in Bergen County, New Jersey, across the small borough of Teterboro and the neighbouring boroughs of Moonachie and Hasbrouck Heights.
Location
About 19 kilometres, or 12 miles, by road from Midtown Manhattan, on the New Jersey side of the Hudson and within sight of the Manhattan skyline. The Lincoln Tunnel and the George Washington Bridge are the usual routes into the city.
History
The oldest operating airport in the New York area, with flights since 1919. Anthony Fokker built aircraft here in the 1920s, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has owned the field since 1949.
Runways
Two runways: 01/19, 2,134 metres or 7,000 feet long, and 06/24, 1,833 metres or 6,013 feet. Both are lit, and instrument landing systems serve runways 06 and 19, so the airport works in low cloud and at night.
Weight limit
No aircraft may operate at Teterboro above 100,000 pounds, about 45 tonnes. The largest business jets, such as the Gulfstream G700 or the Global 7500, can come in at a restricted weight once the operator certifies it in advance for each flight, but airliners converted for private use, such as the Boeing Business Jet, land at Newark or JFK instead.
Traffic
Around 170,000 to 180,000 movements a year, almost all of them business jets and other private aircraft, and no scheduled airline service. That makes Teterboro one of the busiest business aviation airports in the United States.
Operator
The Port Authority, which also runs JFK, Newark and LaGuardia, owns the airport, and AvPORTS manages it day to day under contract.
Hours and noise
Open 24 hours. The Port Authority asks operators to avoid nonessential flights between 11 pm and 6 am and enforces departure noise limits, which are strictest at night. An aircraft that breaks them repeatedly can be banned from the airport.
Customs
US Customs and Border Protection clears international arrivals in Hangar 1 and at Jet Aviation, from early morning until late evening. Aircraft should be on the ground by about 11.15 pm, and clearance after that has to be arranged in advance, at extra cost.
Control tower
A new control tower, 157 feet tall and built by the Federal Aviation Administration for about 73 million dollars, went into service in 2024 and gives controllers a clear view of the whole field.
FBOs
Signature Aviation, with three terminals called East, West and South, together with Atlantic Aviation and Jet Aviation, all open around the clock. Fractional ownership programmes keep private terminals for their own owners.
Services for aircraft
Jet fuel, de icing, heated hangars for large cabin jets, catering from New York caterers and helicopter charters to the Manhattan heliports.
Getting away
There is no taxi rank at the private terminals and no simple public transport into Manhattan. Chauffeured cars are booked in advance, and Midtown is 20 to 45 minutes away outside the rush hours.
Teterboro's strength is also its weakness: it is the closest private airport to Manhattan, so it is busy. On a Friday afternoon, before Thanksgiving or during the United Nations General Assembly, arrivals can be held in the air or on the ground in London. We quote Teterboro as the default and name Westchester or Morristown as an alternative when the calendar or the address makes one of them the better choice.
Where private passengers are handled at Teterboro
Private flights at Teterboro are split between several separate companies. Each FBO runs its own building, lounge and apron. The one your operator books is where the car and the catering meet the aircraft, and its staff take you through customs.
Signature at Teterboro
Signature Aviation runs three separate terminals on the field, East, West and South, the West terminal formerly Meridian's. All three are open around the clock, with passenger lounges, cafés, conference rooms and concierge teams that book cars, hotels and restaurants. Since April 2025 Signature drives its guests arriving from abroad, with their bags, from the customs ramp to Hangar 12, its international arrivals terminal next door, where the cars wait.
Atlantic Aviation
Atlantic's terminal on Industrial Avenue, on the west side of the field, works 24 hours, with a conference room, a business centre, concierge services, wireless internet that reaches the ramp, a Hertz desk and a notary public for documents that need signing on arrival. Its heated hangars take jets up to a Gulfstream G650.
Jet Aviation Teterboro
Jet Aviation has been at Teterboro since 1988, on Charles A. Lindbergh Drive. The renovated terminal has separate lounges for passengers and crews, conference rooms, a business centre and a fitness area, a hangar for large cabin jets and its own US customs processing.
Customs in Hangar 1
Most international arrivals are cleared in Hangar 1, the airport's customs facility. Since March 2025 the FBOs handle their own international flights there, so the handler you booked stays with you and your bags from the steps to the car.
Terminals for owners
Fractional ownership programmes run terminals for the owners of their aircraft at Teterboro, in Hangar 201, and at Westchester. Charter passengers use the public FBOs, which offer the same discretion.
Westchester terminals
At Westchester County Airport, Signature, Atlantic and Million Air handle private flights, and customs officers clear arrivals at their terminals by appointment. Million Air's terminal has a hospitality bar and a golf simulator. The airport is quieter than Teterboro and closer to Greenwich and the northern suburbs.
Cars on the ramp
Car companies that serve Teterboro know the rules of each FBO. With the driver's name, licence and number plate sent ahead, most terminals let the car drive to the aircraft; otherwise it waits at the door, a few steps away.
Catering in the city
New York's aviation caterers deliver to every FBO, from a breakfast tray to a full dinner, with kosher and other special menus on request. A day's notice is usual, and the FBO concierge can also collect a favourite dish from a Manhattan restaurant.
Which FBO you use matters less than naming it early. We confirm the terminal with the operator and pass it to the chauffeur and the caterer, so that nobody waits on the wrong side of the field.
The terminal from a passenger's side
A private arrival at Teterboro often takes well under half an hour from the aircraft steps to the car.
ARRIVAL
First stop, the customs ramp
After landing, an international flight parks on the customs ramp at Hangar 1, at the north end of the airport, or at Jet Aviation, which has its own customs area. Once passengers and bags are cleared, most aircraft taxi on to their FBO with you on board, while Signature drives its guests and their bags to its arrivals terminal in Hangar 12, beside the ramp, where the cars wait.
PASSPORTS
ESTA, fingerprints and a paper form
Officers check each passport against the ESTA and the passenger list that the operator filed before departure, and on a first visit they may take fingerprints and a photograph. Each family also fills in a paper customs declaration, which the crew hands out on board, and it helps to have the address of your hotel to hand.
BAGGAGE
Every bag is shown to the officers
All luggage comes off the aircraft for inspection, and the officers look above all for food, plants and undeclared goods. Declare any food you carry, even fruit from the flight, because undeclared items can bring a fine.
SECURITY
No checkpoint, no liquids rule
On a G450, and on most charter jets up to the size of a Gulfstream G650 or a Global 6000, there is no TSA checkpoint and no limit on liquids: the crew or the FBO checks each passport against the passenger list. When an American operator flies one of the heaviest jets, such as a Gulfstream G700 or a Global 7500, a stricter charter security programme applies, and passengers and cabin bags are screened at the FBO before boarding.
LUGGAGE
A hold you can reach in flight
A Gulfstream G450 carries about 4.8 cubic metres of luggage, roughly a dozen suitcases, in a hold at the back of the cabin that can be reached during the flight. Golf bags, prams and large cases fit, but tell the operator in advance so that the load can be planned.
LATE ARRIVALS
On the ground by 11.15 pm
Customs at Teterboro work from early morning until late evening, and a flight from abroad needs to land by about 11.15 pm. Later clearance has to be requested at least a day ahead, at the operator's expense and without a guarantee, so a flight from London should be off the ground by about 8 pm UK time, or 7 pm in the weeks when New York is only four hours behind.
THE CAR
Booked before you land
There is no taxi rank at the private terminals, so the car is booked in advance and the driver follows the flight. Allow for the tunnel or bridge tolls and the congestion charge, which the car company adds to its invoice.
RUSH HOUR
The tunnel sets the clock
Midtown is about 20 minutes away late in the evening but can take an hour or more at the morning and evening peaks, when traffic queues for the Lincoln Tunnel and the George Washington Bridge. Midday and late evening landings give the quickest drives.
CONGESTION
A charge for Midtown and downtown
Since January 2025 vehicles entering Manhattan at or below 60th Street pay a congestion charge. A private car with a toll tag pays 9 dollars at peak times, while taxis and chauffeured cars licensed in New York City pay a smaller charge per trip instead, and the car company adds whichever applies to the bill.
WAITING
A lounge at every FBO
Every FBO at Teterboro has a passenger lounge with coffee, snacks and wireless internet, and most have conference rooms that can be booked for a last meeting before the flight home. Early arrivals for a departure wait there rather than in a public terminal.
FOOD
Coffee in the lounge, dinner on board
Signature's terminals have cafés, but none of the FBO lounges is a restaurant. For a proper meal before the night flight home, eat in the city or have dinner served on board, ordered through the operator a day ahead.
DEPARTURE
No passport check on the way out
The United States has no exit immigration control. The operator files the passenger list before departure, and at the FBO the line staff take the bags at the door, or straight from the boot when the car is allowed onto the ramp, and load them while you wait. Arriving 20 to 30 minutes before the departure time is usually enough.
OVERNIGHT
The night flight home
An evening departure from Teterboro lands in London the next morning after about seven hours in the air. Because of the airport's night restraint and its tougher noise rules after dark, plan to leave in the evening rather than after midnight.
TIME ZONE
Five hours, sometimes four
New York is five hours behind London for most of the year. For three weeks of the year the gap shrinks to four hours, because the clocks change on different dates: from 25 October to 1 November 2026, and from 14 to 28 March 2027.
JET LAG
Leave late morning, land early afternoon
A departure from London at 11 am lands at Teterboro at about 2 pm local time, in time for an afternoon meeting and an early night. Heading home, an evening departure leaves time to sleep on board and arrive for a morning in London.
WEATHER
Snow in winter, storms in summer
From December to March a nor'easter can bring heavy snow and hours of de icing, and in summer, afternoon thunderstorms often slow traffic into the New York area. A morning arrival in July and August usually avoids the worst of the storms.
TIPPING
Plan for twenty per cent
Tipping is expected in New York: around 20 per cent in restaurants and 15 to 20 per cent for a chauffeur, unless the car company includes it in the price. Charter crews do not expect a tip, although a thank you after a long crossing is always welcome.
SALES TAX
No tax refund for visitors
New York City adds sales tax of 8.875 per cent to most purchases, and visitors cannot reclaim it when they leave, much as Britain has offered tourists no VAT refund since 2021. Clothing and shoes under 110 dollars an item are tax free.
BY AIRLINE
Half by jet, half by airline
Heathrow has many daily flights to JFK and Newark with British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, American, Delta and United. When an empty leg covers only one direction, the other can be flown in first or business class.
PRECLEARANCE
US formalities in Ireland
A jet from Britain can stop at Shannon and clear American immigration and customs there before crossing. It then lands as a domestic arrival with no customs stop, provided it flies to the approved airport named in the clearance, such as Gabreski or Teterboro. That suits a flight straight to the Hamptons or a day when Teterboro customs are busy. Shannon clears flights until 9 pm Irish time at the latest, and the stop takes about an hour and needs a day's notice.
PETS
Dogs need a CDC form
A dog from Britain must be at least six months old, carry a microchip and travel with the receipt for the CDC Dog Import Form, while cats need nothing from the CDC. Signature's West terminal welcomes pets, and the return to Britain has stricter rules of its own.
The minutes on the ground at Teterboro are rarely the problem. The traffic outside the gate and the customs hours are what need planning, and both are settled when the flight is booked.
Four rules that shape a New York trip
A jet with the range to cross
London to New York is about 3,000 nautical miles. A long range jet such as a Gulfstream G450 or G650, a Falcon 7X or a Global 6000 flies it nonstop in either direction, while a super midsize jet usually needs a fuel stop westbound, at Shannon, Keflavik or Gander.
An operator approved for ESTA
Visitors can travel on an ESTA aboard a private or charter jet only when the operator has signed the Visa Waiver Program agreement with US Customs. Most transatlantic operators have, but we confirm it before you book, because the alternative is a visa and fines for the operator.
Land inside customs hours
Plan the arrival between morning and about 11 pm New York time. A later landing needs overtime customs booked at least 24 hours ahead, and Teterboro asks operators to avoid nonessential flights after 11 pm.
Choose the airport by the address
Teterboro for Manhattan and New Jersey, Westchester for Greenwich and Connecticut, Republic for Long Island, and East Hampton or Gabreski for the Hamptons in summer. Half an hour saved on the road is often worth more than a cheaper airport.
With these four settled, a morning in a London office can end in a Manhattan meeting room the same afternoon. Miss one, and the day can end in a customs queue, a visa office or a two hour drive.
What the ground costs in New York
American airport charges are modest by European standards; the taxes on the passengers are what add up.
On the invoice
A landing fee by weight, about 330 dollars for a G450 at Teterboro, plus the FBO's facility fee, often reduced when the jet takes fuel, and parking if the aircraft stays
US charges
The international arrival and departure tax, 23.40 dollars per passenger each way on charter flights in 2026, and customs user fees, normally included in the operator quote
Air Passenger Duty
Band B covers the United States: 1,097 GBP per passenger at the higher rate until March 2027, then 1,132.76 GBP, for jets of 20 tonnes or more with fewer than 19 seats, a G450 among them
Air Passenger Duty is charged on the flight from Britain only. A long range jet of 20 tonnes or more pays the higher rate for Band B, and from April 2027 that rate is due to apply to every private jet of 5.7 tonnes or more, so a super midsize aircraft will lose its tax advantage. Departures from Jersey and Guernsey pay no duty at all, because it is levied only on flights from UK airports. When you leave, the United States charges the same tax again and nothing more.
For a stay of two or three days the jet and its crew usually wait in New York. For a week or more the aircraft often flies home and comes back for the return, and those two crossings are the empty legs that make someone else's trip cheaper. Our quotes show the airport charges, the chauffeur and any helicopter beside the price of the flight, so nothing is added after you sign.

Westchester, Morristown and the other airports around New York
Teterboro is the default, not the only choice. The address, the day of the week and the size of the aircraft can make one of these the better airport.
Westchester County, HPN. Near White Plains, about 33 miles north of Midtown and 45 minutes to an hour by car, and the natural choice for Greenwich, the rest of Fairfield County and the northern suburbs. Customs clear arrivals from 7.30 am to 11.15 pm, with permission requested at least two hours before departure, and jets are asked not to fly between midnight and 6.30 am.
Morristown, MMU. An airport used almost entirely by private aircraft, in New Jersey about 30 miles west of Manhattan, convenient for the New Jersey suburbs, with Signature and Atlantic as handlers. Customs keep regular hours from 10 am to 6 pm on weekdays; at other times, weekends included, clearance must be requested in advance and carries an overtime fee. Flights face extra restrictions while the President stays at his golf club in nearby Bedminster, and the airport closes to other traffic as he arrives and leaves.
Republic, FRG. At Farmingdale on Long Island, about 30 miles east of Midtown, with customs every day from 9 am to 11 pm for up to 20 passengers at 24 hours' notice, and Atlantic and Modern Aviation as handlers. Useful for the Long Island suburbs and as a stop on the way to the Hamptons.
Kennedy and Newark, JFK and EWR. The airline hubs clear private arrivals around the clock, at JFK in the private terminal of Modern Aviation, formerly Sheltair, and at Newark in Signature's terminal, which has its own customs office. They take the largest aircraft, including airliners converted for private use that exceed the Teterboro weight limit, but airline traffic, higher charges and long taxi times make them the second choice for most business jets.
East Hampton and Gabreski, JPX and FOK. The airports of the Hamptons, busy from Memorial Day to Labor Day. East Hampton has a short runway suited to smaller jets and a long running local dispute over noise, so its rules are worth checking before each season, while Gabreski at Westhampton Beach takes any business jet. From Britain, land at Gabreski, which has its own customs for up to 20 passengers, clear customs at Republic first, or stop at Shannon for preclearance and continue to Gabreski.
Boston and Washington. About an hour or less away by jet. Boston Logan and Hanscom Field serve Boston and Dulles serves Washington; short empty legs between these cities and New York make it easy to combine them in one trip.

A chauffeured car is the normal way into the city, and most drivers track the aircraft and wait at the FBO. Helicopters save little time into Midtown late in the evening, but on a Friday in July a 40 minute flight to the Hamptons replaces three hours or more on the Long Island Expressway.
Popular routes between the UK and New York, and which way they run empty
Each price in this table is for a whole Gulfstream crossing the Atlantic without passengers, which its operator would rather sell than fly empty. On a normal charter for dates of your choosing, the same G450 costs well over double; the charter list beneath the board gives the exact numbers. The times are for the flight alone: westbound crossings take longer because they fly against the jet stream.

Transatlantic sectors are rarer than European ones, and they tend to appear with a few days' notice when an owner changes plans. Registering the route and the dates you want is the surest way to hear about one before it is gone.
Online calculator
If you want to see what your route would cost as a standard charter, so you have something to measure an empty leg against, use the calculator below. Fill in the airports, the dates and the number of passengers, add any preference on aircraft type, and we will send a written calculation by email or messenger. Please check your contact details carefully so that we can reply quickly.
The figure the calculator returns is an estimate for planning. The firm quote comes back from our consultants with the cost broken out line by line, and the price agreed there is the price written into the contract.
If you would rather skip the arithmetic, send us the route and the dates instead and a consultant will come back with both numbers, the charter price and any empty leg that fits.
Arriving in New York from the UK
A private flight from Britain lands in the United States as an international arrival. US Customs and Border Protection checks passports, travel authorisations and bags at the airport of arrival, or at Shannon when the flight stops there for preclearance.
Passport. The Foreign Office asks that a British passport be valid for the whole of your stay. The ESTA needs a passport with an electronic chip, which every current British passport has.
ESTA. Apply on the official US government site at least 72 hours before departure. It costs about 40 dollars, lasts two years or until the passport expires and covers stays of up to 90 days for business or tourism. Applications now include a selfie photograph, and the Foreign Office warns that an ESTA without one may not be accepted at the border, so check yours before travelling. The US authorities have also proposed asking for more personal details, including social media accounts.
Visa Waiver Program carriers. An ESTA covers a private or charter flight only when the operator is a signatory to the programme. If it is not, every passenger who would otherwise travel on an ESTA needs a US visa.
90 days. Side trips to Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean during the stay count towards the 90 days rather than starting a new period.
Biometrics. Officers may take fingerprints and a photograph on arrival, and each family completes a customs declaration.
US allowances. Visitors may bring gifts worth up to 100 dollars, including up to 100 cigars, after a stay of at least 72 hours, plus 1 litre of alcohol from the age of 21 and 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars free of duty. Meat products and fresh fruit and vegetables are restricted, and all food must be declared.
Cash. Carrying over 10,000 dollars, whether in notes or in cheques and similar instruments, means filling in a report for CBP, in both directions.
Returning to Britain. The duty free limits for a private arrival in Great Britain are 4 litres of spirits, 18 of wine and 42 of beer with 200 cigarettes for anyone aged 17 or over, and 270 GBP of other goods for every traveller; sparkling wine joins the wine allowance on 1 October 2026. Meat, cheese and other dairy foods bought in America cannot come back to Great Britain with you.
Empty leg calendar for New York, month by month
New York is busy all year, but the transatlantic flows follow the American school year and the social calendar of the city.
Demand Why travellers head for New York in a given month, whether for work, events or family holidays, and the effect on charter prices.
Empty legs How many New York sectors a typical month brings, and roughly how far below a full charter they are priced.
January
SteadyFair
New Year departures in the first days, then a quieter month. Many New York jets spend January in Palm Beach and the Caribbean, and winter storms can close Teterboro for hours.
February
SteadyFair
New York Fashion Week in mid February, and British half term, which in many areas starts on 15 February 2027, coincides with Presidents' Day, a long weekend in America.
March
SteadyFair
Spring breaks begin. America moves its clocks forward on 14 March 2027 and Britain on 28 March, so for two weeks New York is only four hours behind.
April
BusyGood
The British Easter holidays run into April, and spring brings the start of the conference season in Manhattan.
May
BusyGood
The Met Gala on the first Monday of the month and Frieze New York, then Memorial Day on 31 May 2027 opens the summer season in the Hamptons.
June
Very busyStrong
American families head to Europe and many jets return west empty. The Belmont Stakes comes back to the rebuilt Belmont Park, and the Tribeca Festival fills downtown.
July
BusyStrong
Independence Day on 4 July, business in Manhattan at its quietest and the Hamptons at their fullest. London still sends plenty of jets back to America empty.
August
BusyGood
The flow turns in the second half of the month, when jets cross east empty to bring families home. The US Open tennis starts at the end of August.
September
Very busyStrong
Labor Day on 6 September 2027 closes the summer, and the United Nations General Assembly brings heads of state and road closures in the second half of the month.
October
BusyGood
The autumn business season, and from late October many New York jets start moving south to Florida for the winter. Britain turns its clocks back on 25 October 2026 and America on 1 November, which leaves one week with a four hour gap.
November
BusyGood
The New York City Marathon on 1 November 2026 closes bridges and roads, and Thanksgiving on 26 November makes the day before it and the Sunday after among the busiest days of the year for private jets.
December
Very busyStrong
Christmas shopping, the tree at Rockefeller Center and New Year in Times Square bring visitors in, while New York jets leave for the Caribbean and the ski resorts.
Westbound sectors are easiest to find in June and July, eastbound ones from late August to mid September. Outside those windows, the shoulder months of April, May and October bring sectors in both directions, and the city is at its best.

Three situations, three answers
Two days of meetings in Midtown
Leave London at about 11 am, land at Teterboro around 2 pm local time and be in Midtown by three. For a stay this short the jet usually waits; if it does not, ask about eastbound sectors on your date, because jets based in Europe often fly home empty after dropping passengers in New York.
A summer weekend in the Hamptons
Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, fly straight to Gabreski at Westhampton Beach, which has its own customs for up to 20 passengers, or stop at Shannon for preclearance on the way. East Hampton, closer to the villages, has no customs and suits the short hop on by helicopter or small aircraft. Westbound sectors are most common in June and July.
Home to London in late August
At the end of the summer American families fly home from Europe, and the jets that will carry them cross east empty to collect them. Late August and early September are the best weeks to find a released sector from New York to London.
Flying to New York with a dog or a cat
Since August 2024 the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has applied new rules to every dog entering the country. A dog that has spent the last six months only in Britain or other countries free of dog rabies must be at least six months old, carry a microchip and travel with the receipt for the CDC Dog Import Form, completed online before the trip, and it may land at any US airport. Cats face no CDC requirement, although a state or an operator can still ask for proof of rabies vaccination, so bring the vaccination record for every pet.
The journey home is the stricter half. A pet can land in Great Britain from a private jet only on a route approved for pet travel and with an operator approved to carry animals, and a dog needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet one to five days before arrival. The treatment is recorded on a health certificate for Great Britain, issued by a USDA accredited vet and endorsed by the USDA, and the animal must arrive within ten days of that endorsement, microchipped and vaccinated against rabies at least 21 days before travel. Say at the start that a pet is travelling, and we will only offer aircraft whose operators take animals.

Questions about flying private to New York
How many hours is London to New York by private jet?
About 7h 50m westbound in a Gulfstream G450, and about seven hours coming home with the jet stream. From Scotland or Ireland the crossing is half an hour to an hour shorter.
Which airport is best for Manhattan?
Usually Teterboro, 20 to 45 minutes from Midtown by car. Westchester suits Greenwich and the northern suburbs, and JFK or Newark take aircraft too heavy for Teterboro.
Can I travel on my ESTA in a private jet?
Yes, if the operator is a signatory to the Visa Waiver Program. We check this for every New York quote; without it, each passenger would need a visa.
Will we pass through JFK?
No. At Teterboro you clear customs in a small private facility and leave from your FBO, and you never enter an airline terminal.
Is there a VIP lounge at Teterboro?
Each FBO is in effect a private terminal of its own, with a lounge, wireless internet and meeting rooms. Signature adds cafés and a separate arrivals terminal for international guests, and Jet Aviation a fitness area.
Do we go through airport security?
Not on a G450 or a jet of similar size: you show your passports, the bags go into the hold and there is no limit on liquids. Only the heaviest jets flown by American operators bring screening at the FBO.
Can a smaller jet make the crossing?
A super midsize jet can, with a fuel stop westbound at Shannon, Keflavik or Gander. It costs less per hour but adds an hour or two, and from April 2027 it will pay the same Air Passenger Duty as a larger jet.
What if we land after 11 pm?
Customs at Teterboro accept arrivals after about 11.15 pm only by arrangement made at least 24 hours ahead, at extra cost and subject to officers being available, and the airport asks operators to avoid nonessential flights from 11 pm to 6 am. We time the flight to land before then.
Can my dog come to New York with us?
Yes, with a microchip, a minimum age of six months and the CDC Dog Import Form receipt. The flight home to Britain needs an approved operator and a tapeworm treatment.
And if nothing is released for my dates?
Send us the departure airport, the dates and how far they could move. We follow Teterboro, Westchester and the other New York airports and write as soon as a matching sector appears, most often in June and July westbound and late August eastbound.
Call +44 7857 574938 , message the same number on WhatsApp , or write to flight@empty-leg.co.uk . Give us the New York address, your dates, how many people and bags are travelling and whether there is a pet, and we will come back with matching sectors, a full charter price, the ground costs and confirmation that the operator is approved for ESTA travel.
