Empty leg flights to and from Malta

Malta sits in the middle of the Mediterranean, south of Sicily, and packs an extraordinary amount into a small space: Valletta, a fortified capital built by the Knights of St John and listed by UNESCO, the silent city of Mdina, the Grand Harbour, the beaches and diving of Gozo and Comino, and a busy business scene in finance, online gaming and yachting. For British visitors much feels like home: English is spoken everywhere, and you keep to the left on the road. Private flights land at Malta International Airport, code MLA, at Luqa about 5 kilometres south west of Valletta, where business jets are handled on the general aviation apron. From London the flight takes about 3h 15m.

Malta is also one of Europe's great bases for business aviation. Its 9H aircraft register has grown from a few dozen aircraft to more than 900, many of them business jets, and a number of large business jet operators fly under the Maltese flag. Aircraft constantly position in and out of the island, which is good news for anyone looking for an empty leg.

Malta sectors available today

The list below shows every sector we hold into or out of Malta, and adds flights released at Catania and Comiso in Sicily, the nearest airports for a diversion or a combined trip. Under it, a second list shows what each aircraft would cost as an ordinary charter, and on a flight of more than three hours the difference is large.

Ask us what is available at Malta right now.

This board refreshes through the day as operators release sectors, and it shows only part of the market: a large share of repositioning flights never reach a public list at all. Check back shortly, or tell us your route and dates and we will look at what operators are holding at this moment.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.

Set up an alert for Malta

Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up between the UK and Malta.

Please fill in both the departure and the arrival city.

Why Malta is a good place to find empty legs

A flight from Britain to Malta takes more than three hours, so a full charter is expensive and an empty leg saves a large sum. At the same time, few operators keep their aircraft on the island for a week while guests enjoy the sun, and many aircraft are based in Malta and fly out empty to collect clients.

Aircraft based on the island
Malta's register counted 913 aircraft at the end of 2024, 263 of them business jets. Maltese operators send aircraft to Britain to pick up clients and bring them home empty, and crew changes and maintenance visits add more positioning flights.
Holidays in the sun
From Easter to late October British families come for the beaches, the boats and the hotels of St Julian's, Sliema and Mellieħa. The jet drops them and flies home, and it comes back empty a week or two later.
Business and finance
Online gaming companies, fund managers, banks and the growing film industry bring executives on short trips, often midweek and all year round.
Yachts and the Grand Harbour
Superyacht owners and guests join their boats in the Grand Harbour or the marinas around Valletta, and the aircraft usually leaves without them.
Events on the island
The carnival in February, the fireworks festival in April and the Rolex Middle Sea Race, which starts from the Grand Harbour every October, bring visitors on fixed dates.

The Easter break, the long summer and the autumn half term are when sectors are released most, and business routes keep a smaller flow going in every other month. In winter Malta stays mild, and business traffic keeps a steady supply of aircraft moving.

Business jet on the apron at Malta International Airport

Malta International Airport in detail

The airport occupies the site of the former RAF Luqa, and the present passenger terminal became fully operational on 25 March 1992. Malta International Airport plc runs it, and in 2025 it handled 10,061,969 passengers, a new record and 12.3 per cent more than in 2024, with 65,470 aircraft movements. The United Kingdom is its largest market. KM Malta Airlines replaced Air Malta as the national carrier in March 2024, and the SkyParks Business Centre next to the terminal houses offices and meeting rooms. Business jets use the general aviation apron, away from the passenger terminal.

Codes MLA (IATA) and LMML (ICAO)
Location Luqa and Gudja, about 5 kilometres south west of Valletta
Runways Two crossing runways: 13/31 of 3,544 metres, with ILS at both ends, and 05/23 of 2,377 metres
Elevation 91 metres, or 300 feet, above sea level
Operator Malta International Airport plc
Hours Open 24 hours a day; the handlers work around the clock
Private flights Handled on the general aviation apron, with the Executive Aviation Malta terminal at Gate 1 on Apron 3
Handlers Executive Aviation Malta, co branded with ExecuJet, DC Aviation Malta and Medavia
Traffic 10,061,969 passengers and 65,470 movements in 2025
Business aircraft The Legacy 600, the Phenom 300 and the Citation XLS were the private types seen most often in 2025
Fuel Jet A1 and AVGAS, with fuel around the clock through the handlers
Time zone Central European Time, one hour ahead of London all year

For crews Malta is an open, well equipped airport with long runways, instrument approaches and no night curfew, which makes it a popular technical stop between Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The difficulties are summer crowding on the aprons and the weather: strong winds, occasional thunderstorms and summer heat that reduces aircraft performance. In high season parking should be confirmed with the handler well in advance. Catania and Comiso in Sicily are the usual alternates.

Private terminals and lounges at Malta: handlers, formalities and bags

Private passengers at Malta never queue in the public terminal. Three handlers look after business jets on the general aviation apron, each with its own staff, lounge or VIP service and access to the aircraft.

Executive Aviation Malta
At Gate 1 on Apron 3, on the main general and business aviation apron, Executive Aviation Malta runs an FBO co branded with ExecuJet, part of the Luxaviation group. It is open 24 hours and has two fully equipped lounges for passengers and crews, a flight planning room, a shower room, a kitchen and workstations with wireless internet. The company was founded in 2010 and also provides line maintenance and fire services.
Services at Executive Aviation Malta
The team offers gourmet catering, a full concierge, crew transport, into plane fuelling of Jet A1 and AVGAS around the clock, customs assistance, hangar space and approval for pets under the pet travel scheme. The Corinthia and Hilton hotels, about 20 minutes away, are its preferred partners, and the team can also book the airport's own VIP terminal.
DC Aviation Malta
Part of the DC Aviation group from Stuttgart and in Malta since 2008, DC Aviation Malta provides handling around the clock, fuelling, cleaning and loading, with lounges for passengers and crews and limousine transfers at the ramp. It also manages aircraft on the Maltese register and runs a charter fleet that includes a Global 6000 and a Gulfstream G650.
Medavia
The Maltese company Medavia handles VIP, executive and cargo flights from the Apron 1 buildings. It books a dedicated VIP terminal with fast track formalities, arranges meet and greet, chauffeured transfers both airside and landside, catering, hotels and hangarage, and has invested in new offices and a VIP lounge.
Immigration at Luqa
Malta is in the EU and Schengen, so flights from Britain arrive at the external border. The handlers arrange immigration and customs for private passengers, and on your first entry the EES records four fingerprints and a photograph.
Cars to the aircraft
Handlers can arrange for a chauffeur or limousine to meet the aircraft on the ramp, so passengers step from the cabin into the car without walking through a terminal.
Dive kit and suitcases
Handling staff take the bags from the aircraft hold to the car and back again on departure. Diving equipment, golf bags and luggage for a long stay should be mentioned when booking, because a long flight to Malta also needs room for fuel.
SkyParks meeting rooms
The SkyParks Business Centre next to the terminal has meeting rooms and offices, useful for a meeting between flights or a technical stop.
KM Malta Airlines and other carriers
Travellers in the party flying with KM Malta Airlines, easyJet, Ryanair, British Airways or Jet2 use the main terminal. The La Valette Club lounge in departures is open 24 hours, has a large outdoor terrace overlooking the runway and serves a buffet with hot and cold dishes, including Maltese pastizzi, and a bar with Maltese wines and Italian prosecco; there is a second lounge area for arriving passengers in baggage reclaim.
The airport VIP Terminal
Malta International Airport also runs its own VIP Terminal, a separate limestone building near the main terminal screened by palms and ficus trees. Guests check in and pass security in private, relax in one of four suites on the first floor and are driven to the aircraft steps, and on arrival a chauffeur meets them at the aircraft with a name sign.
Eating at the airport
Handler lounges keep to drinks and light bites, with anything hot ordered from a caterer. For a sit down meal, the terminal has a Hard Rock Cafe, the Talbot and Bons bistro and wine bar, a Neapolitan pizzeria and a traditional Maltese café, and Wagamama is at the SkyParks Business Centre next door.
Leaving Luqa
Half an hour at the handler before the departure time is enough. The airport is open at night, but in summer the handlers are busy, so confirm the timing with them the day before.

How we plan a Malta flight

  • The aircraft. We choose a jet with the range for more than three hours in the air, so the flight is nonstop from Britain.
  • Parking. In summer we confirm the stand with the handler as soon as the aircraft is booked.
  • The handler. The choice between the three handling companies depends on the lounge, the VIP service and the timing you want.
  • Your dog. Malta requires tapeworm treatment for dogs before arrival, so we plan the vet visit with you.
  • Ground and sea. Drivers, boats to Comino and the ferry to Gozo are booked with the flight.

Four things to know before booking Malta

Clients ask about each of these before booking, so the answers go into every quote.

A long flight
At more than three hours from London and about four from Scotland, the choice of aircraft matters: a light jet reaches Malta from the south of England, but a midsize jet is more comfortable and carries more luggage.
No night curfew
The airport is open around the clock, so a late arrival after dinner in London or an early departure is possible.
Summer parking
In July and August the general aviation apron fills up, and parking for a stay of several days must be booked early.
Dogs need treatment first
A vet must deworm the dog in the days before landing in Malta, a rule few other EU states apply.

From the airport to Valletta, the coast and Gozo

Malta is small, and nowhere on the main island is more than about 45 minutes from the airport. The times below are for a car outside the rush hour; traffic around Sliema and St Julian's can be heavy in summer.

Destination By car from the airport What is there
Marsaxlokk About 10 minutes The fishing village, its colourful boats and the Sunday market
Valletta About 15 minutes The capital, St John's and its Caravaggio paintings, and the Upper Barrakka Gardens
Blue Grotto About 15 minutes Sea caves on the south coast, visited by boat
Mdina and Rabat About 20 minutes The walled silent city and its palaces
Sliema and St Julian's About 25 minutes The main hotels, restaurants and the Portomaso marina
Mellieħa About 40 minutes The largest sandy beach on the island and family resorts
Ċirkewwa About 45 minutes The ferry to Gozo and boats to Comino
Gozo About 1h 30m By car to Ċirkewwa and a 25 minute ferry crossing to Mġarr

A fast ferry from Valletta reaches Gozo in about 45 minutes, and a private boat or a helicopter to the heliport at Xewkija is quicker still for a day on the island. Gozo has no runway for jets, so every private flight lands at Luqa.

What else you pay on a Malta trip

Apart from the aircraft, the extras on a Malta trip are British passenger duty on the way out, the airport's passenger charges on the way home and the handler's fee.

Band A
the UK Air Passenger Duty band for Malta, which lies within 2,000 miles of London, charged on jets of 5.7 tonnes or more
Airport charges
Malta International Airport's passenger service, security and reduced mobility charges on each departing passenger
Handling
charged by Executive Aviation Malta, DC Aviation Malta or Medavia for the lounge, the formalities and the bags
Parking
stand fees for each night on the ground, which add up on a week long holiday

UK Air Passenger Duty applies to the flight out of Britain. Malta falls in Band A, where the charge until the end of March 2027 is 32 GBP per head in a jet of 5.7 to 20 tonnes and 142 GBP in anything larger; from April 2027 one rate of 146.63 GBP per head covers every private jet from 5.7 tonnes. Jets under 5.7 tonnes and flights from the Channel Islands are exempt, and Scottish departures move to Scotland's own Air Departure Tax in April 2027. Malta has no separate government departure tax on private flights, but the airport charges a passenger service fee, a security fee and a small charge for passengers with reduced mobility on every departing passenger.

Catania, Comiso and the other airports near Malta

Malta International Airport is the only airport on the islands that takes business jets. The list below covers the islands themselves and the Sicilian airports used as alternates and as stops on a combined trip.

Malta International, LMML. The only airport for jets in the Maltese islands, at Luqa, open around the clock with three handlers.
Gozo heliport, Xewkija. A heliport on Gozo for helicopter transfers; there is no runway for fixed wing jets on the island.
Catania, LICC. About 200 kilometres to the north, on the east coast of Sicily below Mount Etna, the main alternate and a gateway to Taormina.
Comiso, LICB. About 130 kilometres to the north, in the south east of Sicily, near Ragusa and the baroque towns of the Val di Noto.

Popular routes from the UK and Ireland to Malta, and which way they run empty

What you book here is an entire aircraft on a leg it must fly regardless. Times are for the flight alone. Because Malta is more than 2,000 kilometres from Britain, our routes use jets with the range for the trip, from a Citation M2 on the Jersey route to a Challenger 350 or Legacy 500 for larger groups and Scotland. If the dates are fixed, the normal charter price appears in the second list near the start.

Glasgow to Malta 4h 00m 11,600 GBP Summer Out to fetch a family after two weeks on Gozo
Malta to Aberdeen 4h 05m 12,600 GBP All year Home after an energy industry meeting in Valletta
Belfast to Malta 4h 00m 8,000 GBP Summer Out to collect a group at the end of a diving holiday
Malta to Dublin 3h 50m 7,900 GBP All year Returning after a drop for a fund managers' meeting
Cardiff to Malta 3h 25m 6,500 GBP Summer Out to pick up a family from Sliema
Malta to Jersey 3h 10m 4,700 GBP Summer Back to the island after a holiday drop
Liverpool to Malta 3h 40m 10,000 GBP February Out to collect guests after the carnival

Sectors bunch on Saturdays and Sundays in summer, when holiday stays begin and end, and on Mondays and Fridays for business travel. Because so many aircraft are based in Malta, flights from the island to Britain are often released at short notice.

Entering Malta from Britain: border and customs rules

A private flight from Britain lands at an external Schengen border, and the handler walks passengers through Maltese immigration and customs. Many things feel familiar to British visitors, but the rules are European.

  • Passport. Look at both dates in your passport: issue in the past decade, expiry no sooner than three months after the day you fly out of the Schengen zone.
  • Stays. No visa is needed for up to 90 days in any 180 across Schengen, and a trip on to Sicily counts towards the same limit.
  • EES. Four fingerprints and a photograph are taken on the first entry; children under 12 give only a photograph.
  • Customs allowances. Coming in from Britain, an adult's duty free allowance is a carton of cigarettes, one litre of spirits or two of fizz or fortified wine, four of table wine, sixteen of beer and goods worth up to 430 euros.
  • Food. Leave British ham, cheese and milk at home, as the EU refuses them at the border.
  • Cash. Sums of 10,000 euros or more must be declared.
  • Familiar habits. English is an official language, traffic drives on the left and the sockets are the British three pin type, though the currency is the euro.
  • The way home. Flying back privately, each adult can land in Britain with up to 270 GBP of shopping plus 18 litres of wine, 42 of beer, 4 of spirits and 200 cigarettes without paying duty, and from 1 October 2026 fizz joins the wine allowance and cider the beer one.

Three situations, three answers

A week in St Julian's
Fly out on a Saturday, stay in a hotel in St Julian's or Sliema and fly home the following Saturday. Each direction is booked separately, and Maltese based aircraft often provide the return.
A day of meetings in Valletta
Leave London early, land around midday local time and be in Valletta 15 minutes later. With no night curfew, the aircraft can bring you home the same evening.
Straight to the Grand Harbour
Land at Luqa, drive 15 minutes to the Grand Harbour and board the yacht the same afternoon. The aircraft usually leaves empty and can be sold as an empty leg.

Taking a dog or cat to Malta

The animal is chipped, then vaccinated against rabies at least three weeks before the trip, and an official vet signs its health certificate no more than ten days before you land. Unlike most EU countries, Malta also requires dogs to be treated against tapeworm by a vet between one and five days before arrival, and one person may bring no more than five pets.

Dog in the cabin of a private jet to Malta

For the flight home, Malta is one of the few countries exempt from Britain's tapeworm rule, so a dog returning from Malta needs no further treatment, but the aircraft must be operated by a company approved to carry pets into Britain. Executive Aviation Malta is approved to handle pets under the pet travel scheme, and we check the operator's rules for the cabin with you in advance.

Flying privately to Malta: common questions

Is Luqa the only airport for a private jet to Malta?
Yes. Luqa, code MLA, has the islands' only runway for business jets. Private flights are handled by Executive Aviation Malta, DC Aviation Malta or Medavia, and Catania and Comiso in Sicily are the alternates.
How many hours does the flight to Malta take?
About 3h 10m from Jersey, 3h 15m to 3h 25m from London, Farnborough, Biggin Hill, Southampton, Oxford, Bristol and Cardiff, 3h 30m to 3h 50m from Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Newcastle and Dublin, and 4h 00m to 4h 05m from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast and Aberdeen.
Is Malta airport open at night?
Yes. Luqa has no curfew, and all three handlers can receive a flight at any hour.
Can a private jet land on Gozo?
No. Gozo has only a heliport, so jets land at Luqa and passengers continue by ferry, boat or helicopter.
What does an empty leg to Malta cost?
Our lowest fares are about 4,700 GBP for a whole Citation M2 flying Malta to Jersey and 6,100 GBP for a Citation CJ3 flying Malta to Biggin Hill. Chartered on dates you choose, those eighteen flights would cost between roughly 11,100 GBP and 34,000 GBP.
Is there a departure tax in Malta?
No government levy of that kind exists, though the airport bills every departing passenger for its terminal, security and accessibility services.
Does my dog need treatment before Malta?
Yes. Besides the microchip, rabies vaccination and health certificate, dogs must be treated against tapeworm one to five days before arriving in Malta. No treatment is needed for the return to Britain.
How far is Valletta from the airport?
About 15 minutes by car, and St Julian's about 25 minutes.
Do British visitors need a visa for Malta?
No. Holidaymakers and business visitors from Britain enter Malta without one, within the Schengen allowance.
Why are there so many empty legs to and from Malta?
Many business jets are registered and based in Malta, so aircraft constantly fly out to collect clients and back home again.
And if nothing is released for my dates?
Give us the dates, the size of the party and the reason for travelling, whether a beach holiday, meetings or a week on a yacht. With so many jets based on the island, a matching flight to or from Britain usually comes up within days.

Call +44 7857 574938 , message the same number on WhatsApp , or write to flight@empty-leg.co.uk . Send the dates, how many are flying, the luggage, any animals and your hotel or villa on the islands. We will send the sectors that fit with their charter prices, and plan the handler, the transfer and any ferry or boat to Gozo and Comino.
