Empty leg flights to and from Cologne

Cologne is Germany's fourth largest city and, with Bonn next door, one of the country's busiest business regions: the Koelnmesse trade fairs, the broadcasters WDR and RTL, Ford's German headquarters and, in Bonn, Deutsche Telekom, DHL Group and the United Nations campus. Private flights from Britain bring exhibitors and buyers to the fairs, board members to meetings in both cities and visitors to the carnival, the cathedral and the Christmas markets. The flight takes no longer than a train from London to Birmingham: about 530 kilometres, or seventy minutes in a light or midsize jet, and on landing the watch goes forward an hour.

Private aircraft use Cologne Bonn Airport, code CGN, on the Wahner Heide about 15 kilometres from the centres of both cities. Its General Aviation Terminal, run by Business Aviation Centre Cologne, has its own lounges, conference rooms, customs and Federal Police, and unlike Düsseldorf the airport holds a permit for flights around the clock, which makes it the usual answer for a late arrival or departure in the Rhineland.

Cologne sectors available today

The list below shows every sector we hold into or out of Cologne Bonn. When Cologne is quiet, it adds flights at Düsseldorf, Mönchengladbach and Dortmund, three airports within about an hour of Cologne by road. A second table then prices the same aircraft types as a normal charter between Britain and Cologne on dates of your choice, so the saving on any released sector is plain to see.

Prices are for the whole aircraft and are shown in pounds. Some are indicative figures worked out from the distance and the class of jet; the firm price is confirmed with the operator when you send a request.

Also moving across Düsseldorf, Mönchengladbach and Dortmund

Sectors on this list do not touch Cologne itself. They are shown because the fields are close enough that the drive rarely costs you more than waiting for the right sector does. Tell us which one interests you and we will confirm it is still open.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.

Set up an alert for Cologne

Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up between the UK and Cologne.

Please fill in both the departure and the arrival city.

Nothing is stored on this site. The button opens a chat with the message already written, and you send it yourself. We reply during office hours, 07:00 to 23:00, and check messages outside them too.

Why jets fly empty between Britain and Cologne

Cologne sits an hour's flight from London, close enough for a day trip, so operators usually fly their aircraft home rather than park it for a stay of several days. Five features of the Rhineland keep those empty sectors coming.

Trade fairs at Koelnmesse
Anuga, gamescom, imm cologne, ISM, interzum and the dental show IDS fill the halls in Deutz several times a year. Exhibitors and buyers arrive over a day or two and leave on the last afternoon, so aircraft come in full and go home empty at the start of a fair, and the reverse happens at its close.
Headquarters in two cities
Cologne and Bonn host the head offices of Deutsche Telekom and DHL Group, Ford's German business and the broadcasters WDR and RTL, and the UN campus in Bonn draws delegations all year. Board meetings and signings rarely last more than a day or two, and the jet seldom waits for the return.
Open when Düsseldorf is closed
Düsseldorf stops jet departures at 22:00 and landings at 23:00, while Cologne Bonn holds a permit for operations around the clock. Jets that finish their day late in the Rhineland often reposition to or from Cologne, and those short hops and the flights home that follow them can be sold.
Carnival
The Rosenmontag parade alone draws more than a million people to the streets of Cologne, and the street carnival runs from Weiberfastnacht to that Monday. Private parties fly in for the long weekend and out on the Tuesday or Wednesday, and the aircraft that brought them rarely stay for the whole of it.
Short breaks and Christmas markets
Weekends at the Christmas markets, concerts at the LANXESS arena and trips along the Rhine are short, and at an hour's flight from London the aircraft usually flies home after the Friday drop and returns on Sunday, which can release a sector in each direction.

Sectors are released all year, most of all in the weeks of the big fairs, at carnival and in the run up to Christmas. Because the flight is short, many of them appear only a day or two before departure, once the operator knows where the aircraft has to be next.

Cologne Bonn Airport in detail

The airfield on the Wahner Heide was built in 1939 and officially inaugurated as the airport of Cologne and Bonn on 18 July 1957; it carries the name of Konrad Adenauer, the first federal chancellor, who was born in Cologne. It is run by Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH, owned mainly by the City of Cologne, the federal government and the state of North Rhine Westphalia, and in 2025 it handled 10.1 million passengers and 840,000 tonnes of freight. Airline passengers use Terminals 1 and 2, the military side of the airfield is home to the German Air Force's Executive Transport Wing, and business aviation has its own General Aviation Terminal.

Codes CGN (IATA) and EDDK (ICAO)
Location Porz, on the Wahner Heide, about 15 kilometres south east of Cologne Cathedral and 15 kilometres north east of the centre of Bonn
Runways Three: 13L/31R of 3,815 metres, 06/24 of 2,459 metres and 13R/31L of 1,863 metres, renamed from 14L/32R and 14R/32L in April 2024 because of the shift in the magnetic field
Elevation 92 metres, or 302 feet, above sea level
Operator Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH
Operating permit Around the clock for passenger and cargo flights; between 22:00 and 06:00 particularly loud aircraft are banned and some runway directions are closed, under conditions valid until 31 October 2030
Slots A fully coordinated airport: every flight, private ones included, needs a slot
General Aviation Terminal Run by Business Aviation Centre Cologne, outside the security area, with VIP rooms, lounges and conference rooms; customs and the Federal Police work in the building
Terminal hours 05:00 to 00:30 as standard, and adjusted to other flight times on request
Traffic 10.1 million passengers and 840,000 tonnes of freight in 2025
Rail A station under the terminals with S Bahn trains to Cologne main station in about 15 minutes and ICE services on the Cologne to Frankfurt high speed line
Road The A59 motorway links the airport with both cities, and the SB60 express bus reaches central Bonn in about 27 minutes

For a crew, Cologne Bonn is an easy airport: a runway of almost four kilometres, instrument approaches, fuel and handling on the spot and a general aviation apron beside the terminal. What needs planning is the slot, which is required at every hour, and the night: a quiet modern business jet can use the airport after 22:00, but the approach direction and the noise category are checked when the flight is filed, and night take offs and landings carry a noise surcharge that has risen sharply since January 2026.

Night flights, slots and noise at Cologne Bonn

Three rules shape a private flight to Cologne. We confirm all three when the aircraft is booked, and again the day before departure.

A permit around the clock
Cologne Bonn is one of the few German airports with an unlimited permit for 24 hour operation, covering passenger and cargo flights alike. That is why jets that cannot land at Düsseldorf before 23:00 divert or reposition here, and why a dinner in Cologne can end with a flight home the same night.
Quiet aircraft only at night
Between 22:00 and 06:00 particularly loud aircraft are banned, jets must meet the noise conditions of the state transport ministry, and some runway directions are not used. The conditions run until 31 October 2030, and in March 2026 the airport applied to make them permanent. Most modern business jets qualify, but the operator checks the type before accepting a night flight.
Slots at every hour
Cologne Bonn is a fully coordinated airport, so a private flight needs a slot from the German airport coordinator like any airline. Outside the peak hours this is usually a formality, but around the big fairs we ask for it as soon as the aircraft is held.

Night flights cost more than day flights. The airport's noise surcharges for take offs and landings between 22:00 and 06:00 went up in January 2026 and are due to rise again in 2028; for a business jet the sums are modest next to the price of the aircraft, but an operator includes them in a quote for a late return.

The General Aviation Terminal, VIP packages, lounges and restaurants

At Cologne Bonn a private traveller does not need to enter Terminal 1 or Terminal 2. The General Aviation Terminal stands on its own outside the security area, with parking by the door, the business aviation apron next to it and customs and Federal Police officers inside, so passports, customs and screening are all done in one building.

Business Aviation Centre Cologne
The terminal is run by Business Aviation Centre Cologne, part of Kurz Aviation Service since September 2010, the group that also runs the business aviation centres at Frankfurt and Stuttgart. Its team handles aircraft and passengers seven days a week, supplies fuel, arranges handling at other German airports and books catering, cars and hotels, and it serves as the Cologne partner of the ExecuJet and Jet Aviation FBO networks.
Hours of the terminal
The official hours are 05:00 to 00:30, and the centre adjusts them to the times of a particular flight on request. Together with the airport's permit for night operations, this makes Cologne a more flexible choice than Düsseldorf for an early start or a late return.
Lounge and lobby
The spacious passenger lounge has lounge furniture and recliners, television, wireless internet and a conference table, and the bright lobby offers coffee and a television for a shorter wait. Business Aviation Centre Cologne reserves the lounge itself for guests of its VIP Premium package, so ask for it when the flight is booked.
Conference rooms to hire
Two conference rooms can be hired for a meeting before the flight home: a small one for up to six people from 90 euros plus VAT, and a large one for up to 20 people with a projector and a flip chart from 100 euros plus VAT, with a flat rate of 400 euros plus VAT for four hours or more. Drinks are provided and catering can be arranged.
The crew lounge
Crews have a bright lounge with floor to ceiling windows, lounge furniture, sleeping chairs, television, wireless internet, a computer and printer, and free soft drinks, coffee and snacks, which makes a same day return practical for a crew that arrives in the morning.
VIP packages
For a traveller who flies one way by airline, the centre sells VIP packages through the General Aviation Terminal: a personal agent from the car, a quick security and passport check in the building and a VIP shuttle across the apron to the aircraft. The Basic package costs 170 euros plus VAT per direction, or 120 euros with hand luggage only, and the Premium package 270 euros, or 220 euros with hand luggage only, with the VIP lounge, snacks and drinks included for up to three hours before departure or 30 minutes on arrival. For an airline departure the centre asks guests to arrive 75 minutes ahead on Basic and 90 minutes on Premium.
Package extras and conditions
Each further passenger costs 70 euros on Basic and 100 euros on Premium, with two suitcases included and 20 euros for a golf bag or other bulky item. Bookings made less than 24 hours ahead and services between 22:00 and 06:00 carry a surcharge of 30 per cent, a car can be parked at the terminal for 50 euros a day including VAT, and children under two travel free.
The airline lounges
In the airline terminals, The Lounge in Terminal 1, in departure area C, opens from 05:00 to 22:00, and The Lounge in Terminal 2, opposite gate D50, from 06:00 to 21:00, or to 20:00 on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays; both offer a buffet of breakfast and hot and cold dishes and drinks including alcohol. Entry costs 35 euros for up to four hours, and Priority Pass members are admitted.
A Kölsch before the flight
For a proper meal at the airport, the brewhouse früh bis spät, opened by the Cologne brewery Früh on 29 April 2025, sits in the public area of Terminal 1, departure area C, a short drive from the General Aviation Terminal. It opens from 07:00 to 22:00 and serves freshly tapped Früh Kölsch with Rhineland dishes such as Sauerbraten and the Halver Hahn, a rye roll with cheese, as well as sandwiches and coffee.
Italian food and the terrace
Airline passengers who have passed security in Terminal 1 can eat at Amore Bar & Ristorante in departure area B, open from 06:00 to 22:00 for pizza, pasta and Italian drinks. Before a flight, the free visitor terrace on the fifth floor of Terminal 1 looks over the apron and the main runway from 06:30 to 22:00, weather permitting.
Shops and money
Both terminals have Setur duty free shops, and Terminal 1 adds a REWE City supermarket, a WHSmith bookshop, a Travelex currency exchange and cash machines, useful for euros before the drive into Cologne.
Limited mobility
Anyone who finds aircraft steps difficult should tell us before we choose the aircraft, so that the operator and the handling team can arrange the right help at the General Aviation Terminal.

Five places to spend the time before a flight, compared by access, opening hours and price:

Where you wait Who can use it Hours What it offers Cost to you
General Aviation Terminal Passengers and crews of private flights 05:00 to 00:30, longer on request Customs and Federal Police in the building, a lobby with coffee, conference rooms to hire, a crew lounge Handling included in the operator's price; meeting rooms from 90 euros plus VAT
VIP Premium package Mainly airline passengers; private passengers who want the lounge By booking; 30 per cent more from 22:00 to 06:00 A personal agent, the passenger lounge with snacks and drinks, a shuttle to the aircraft 270 euros plus VAT per direction for the first guest
VIP Basic package Mainly airline passengers who want a quicker route By booking; 30 per cent more from 22:00 to 06:00 A personal agent, quick checks and a shuttle to the aircraft, without the lounge 170 euros plus VAT per direction for the first guest
The Lounge, Terminals 1 and 2 Airline passengers after security 05:00 to 22:00 in Terminal 1, shorter hours in Terminal 2 A buffet with hot and cold dishes, drinks including alcohol, work areas 35 euros for up to four hours, or Priority Pass
früh bis spät brewhouse, Terminal 1 Anyone, in the public area before security 07:00 to 22:00 Früh Kölsch on tap, Rhineland dishes, sandwiches and coffee Paid on the spot

The operator books the handling with the aircraft, but a VIP package, the passenger lounge or a meeting room is best requested when the flight is booked, at least 24 hours ahead.

From the aircraft to your car at Cologne Bonn, step by step

Everything happens in one small building, so an arrival from the aircraft to the car usually takes about a quarter of an hour, and a departure the same.

ON ARRIVAL
A shuttle from the steps
The aircraft parks on the business aviation apron beside the General Aviation Terminal, and a vehicle from the handling team takes you and your bags the short distance to the door.
PASSPORTS
Bundespolizei at the desk
Arriving from outside Schengen, every traveller shows a passport to the German Federal Police at a desk inside the General Aviation Terminal. On a first visit the Entry/Exit System registers you with a photograph, plus four fingerprints for everyone from the age of twelve.
CUSTOMS
Officers on site
German customs work in the same building, and the handling team presents any declaration for goods over the allowances and the certificate of a pet travelling with you.
THE BAGS
No carousel
The ramp team unloads the hold and carries the suitcases to your car; on departure they collect them at the door, screen them in the terminal and load them. Exhibition sample cases and golf clubs fit if the operator hears about them at booking, because the hold of a light jet has limited room.
SCREENING
Only your party
Before departure passengers and cabin bags are screened in the General Aviation Terminal, with nobody else in the line.
WAITING
Lobby, lounge or meeting room
A short wait is spent in the lobby with coffee; the passenger lounge comes with the VIP Premium package, and a conference room can be hired for a last meeting.
CATERING
Ordered the day before
The handling team orders meals for the flight a day in advance, from Rhineland specialities to a menu of your own. For a sit down meal on the ground there is the früh bis spät brewhouse in Terminal 1, or the restaurants of the city, twenty minutes away.
THE CAR
Parked by the door
Cars wait outside the terminal, and the handling team can book a chauffeur or a hire car. The S Bahn from the airport station reaches Cologne main station in about 15 minutes, but with luggage a car is simpler.
DEPARTURE
Half an hour before take off
On the way home, arriving at the General Aviation Terminal half an hour before take off leaves time for the exit passport check and screening, which usually take a few minutes.
LATE FLIGHTS
Possible, with a surcharge
The terminal opens later on request and the airport works through the night, so a flight after dinner is possible for a quiet jet, with night surcharges on the airport charges and on any VIP package.
TAX FREE
Stamp the export papers
Shopping on the Hohe Strasse or the Schildergasse can be tax free for a non EU resident. The export papers need a customs stamp at the airport before departure, so tell the handling team the day before and keep the goods and receipts to hand.
ONE WAY BY AIRLINE
A VIP package
If one direction is an airline flight, a VIP package takes you through the General Aviation Terminal and out to the aircraft by shuttle, and The Lounge in either terminal serves travellers who prefer the airline route.

The slot, the arrival time, any VIP package and the car are arranged before the flight, together with the aircraft, in one booking.

General Aviation Terminal at Cologne Bonn Airport

Five points to settle before a Cologne trip

Fairs, carnival and the night regime make Cologne more seasonal than it looks, and these five questions are answered in our first quote.

The big fairs
During Anuga, gamescom and the other large fairs, hotel rooms in Cologne sell out and prices rise, slots at the popular hours go early and the apron fills with business jets. Book the aircraft, the slot and the hotel together, as early as possible.
Cologne or Düsseldorf
For the Koelnmesse, Cologne and Bonn, Cologne Bonn is the natural airport; for the Messe Düsseldorf and the Ruhr, Düsseldorf is closer. After 22:00 jets can depart only from Cologne Bonn, so late returns from either city are planned from here.
Carnival days
From Weiberfastnacht to Rosenmontag the city centre is closed to traffic in places, the trains are packed and hotels are full, so drivers need extra time and routes planned in advance.
A night flight
A late departure is possible for a quiet jet, but it costs a night surcharge at the airport and needs the terminal to stay open, both of which we arrange with the booking.
Euros on the ground
Germany uses the euro, and some taxis and smaller restaurants still prefer cash, while the aircraft is quoted in pounds.

From the airport to Cologne, Bonn and the region

The A59 motorway runs from the airport to both cities, and most destinations in the Cologne and Bonn area are within half an hour. Times are estimates for a chauffeured car in light traffic; at rush hour, on fair days and at carnival they can double.

Destination From the airport What is there
Koelnmesse and Deutz About 15 minutes The trade fair halls, the LANXESS arena and the view of the cathedral across the Rhine
Cathedral and Old Town About 20 minutes Cologne Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the main station, the old town breweries and the large hotels
Rheinauhafen and MediaPark About 20 minutes The office quarters of media, law and consulting firms, with the crane houses on the river
Bonn centre About 20 minutes The old federal capital, Beethoven's birthplace and the Rhine promenade
Bonn federal quarter About 20 minutes The UN campus, the World Conference Center and the head offices of Deutsche Telekom and DHL Group
Königswinter and the Siebengebirge About 25 minutes The Drachenfels and the hills above the Rhine south east of Bonn
Brühl and Phantasialand About 25 minutes The baroque palaces listed by UNESCO and the theme park
Düsseldorf About 45 minutes The state capital, its Messe and the Königsallee
Aachen About 1 hour The cathedral of Charlemagne, close to the Dutch and Belgian borders
Nürburgring About 1 hour The racing circuit in the Eifel hills

From the station under the terminals, S Bahn trains run to Cologne main station in about 15 minutes, every 20 minutes for most of the day, the SB60 express bus reaches central Bonn in about 27 minutes, and regional trains go on to Düsseldorf in under an hour. With luggage or on fair days a car from the terminal door is still the simplest choice.

What a Cologne trip adds to the bill

Beyond the aircraft itself, a Cologne trip meets three public charges: Air Passenger Duty when you leave Britain, Germany's Luftverkehrsteuer when you leave Germany, and Cologne's levy on hotel rooms.

UK duty
Air Passenger Duty on the flight out of Britain, Band A, for aircraft of 5.7 tonnes or more
German air transport tax
13.03 euros per passenger on a commercial flight from Germany to Britain since 1 July 2026
Cologne accommodation tax
5 per cent of the room price, business stays included since 1 July 2024
Airport and handling
landing, noise, parking and handling charges, all inside the operator's quote

Air Passenger Duty is due only on the flight that leaves the UK, and Germany falls in Band A. The 2026 to 2027 rates are 32 GBP per passenger for private jets of 5.7 to 20 tonnes and 142 GBP above 20 tonnes; a flat private jet rate of 146.63 GBP replaces both on 1 April 2027. Aircraft lighter than 5.7 tonnes, such as the Citation M2 and the Pilatus PC-12, pay none, departures from Jersey and Guernsey are outside it, and from April 2027 flights from Scotland pay the Scottish Air Departure Tax, with a separate Scottish tax on private jets planned from April 2028.

Germany's Luftverkehrsteuer is charged on commercial passenger flights leaving the country, so a charter or an empty leg home from Cologne carries it and the flight in does not. For destinations up to 2,500 kilometres away, Britain among them, it fell from 15.53 to 13.03 euros per passenger on 1 July 2026, and the operator adds it to the invoice. Cologne's hotels add the city's accommodation tax of 5 per cent of the room price, which since 1 July 2024 has applied to business stays as well.

Düsseldorf, Mönchengladbach and the other airfields around Cologne

Cologne Bonn is the right airport for nearly every private trip to Cologne and Bonn, but the Rhineland has several alternatives when the trip continues elsewhere or when a smaller airfield suits a light aircraft.

Cologne Bonn, EDDK. The main airport of the region, with a runway of 3,815 metres, the General Aviation Terminal, coordinated slots and night operations for quieter aircraft.
Düsseldorf, EDDL. About 55 kilometres to the north, closest to the Messe Düsseldorf, the Königsallee and the Ruhr; its executive terminal is run by Jet Aviation, and jets must be airborne by 22:00 and on the ground by 23:00.
Bonn Hangelar, EDKB. A small airfield about 11 kilometres south of Cologne Bonn, on the edge of Sankt Augustin, used by light aircraft and helicopters rather than jets from Britain.
Mönchengladbach, EDLN. About 60 kilometres to the north west, a general aviation airfield with 1,200 metres of usable runway and an ILS, suited to light jets and turboprops bound for the western Rhineland.
Dortmund, EDLW. About 80 kilometres to the north east, the airport for the eastern Ruhr, with airline traffic and a runway long enough for business jets.
Maastricht Aachen, EHBK. Across the Dutch border, about 95 kilometres to the west, convenient for Aachen and the three country corner.

Popular routes between the UK and Cologne, and which way they run empty

Prices are for the complete aircraft on a repositioning flight, whether you fill two seats or all of them, and the times cover only the flight itself. At roughly 530 kilometres from London, Cologne is within easy reach of every type listed, whether a Citation M2 for Southampton or Liverpool, a Pilatus PC-12 turboprop for Cardiff, which cruises a little slower, or a Challenger 350 for a bigger delegation. With fixed dates, compare them with the charter price list for Cologne.

Cologne to Jersey 1h 25m 3,100 GBP All year Back to Jersey after a business drop
Liverpool to Cologne 1h 30m 2,600 GBP Summer Out on the eve of a Sunday collection after a concert weekend

Fairs and the working week shape the pattern: business sectors towards Britain cluster on the opening days of each fair and on Monday and Tuesday mornings, and those towards Cologne on the closing days and on Thursday and Friday, while leisure weekends follow the Friday to Sunday rhythm. Late in the evening, flights from Düsseldorf to Cologne Bonn add short repositionings that can be combined with a flight home.

Entering Germany at Cologne: passports, customs and tax free

Germany is in the EU and in Schengen and Britain is in neither, so a private flight from the UK to Cologne Bonn crosses the external Schengen border, and the Federal Police and customs check it in the General Aviation Terminal.

  • Passport. It has to be less than ten years old on the day you arrive and remain valid for three months after you leave the Schengen area; a passport that fails either test can be refused at the border.
  • Schengen days. British visitors may stay without a visa for 90 days in any 180 day period across the Schengen countries, and time in Germany counts towards the same total as time in France or the Netherlands.
  • Entry/Exit System. Border officers record each crossing digitally instead of stamping passports, a system in full use since April 2026; the first time, they take a photograph and, for travellers aged twelve or over, four fingerprints.
  • ETIAS. The authorisation is still not required: in July 2026 its launch slipped into 2027 with no date set, and once it applies every visitor without a visa will need one, valid for three years, for a fee of 20 euros paid by those between 18 and 70.
  • Customs. From Britain each adult may bring into Germany, free of duty, 200 cigarettes, 1 litre of spirits or 2 litres of drinks up to 22 per cent, 4 litres of still wine, 16 litres of beer and other goods up to 430 euros; cash of 10,000 euros or more has to be declared.
  • Food. EU rules stop travellers from Britain carrying in meat or milk products, so leave the ham roll or the cheddar on board.
  • Tax free. Visitors living outside the EU can reclaim German VAT on goods they take home, provided customs stamp the export papers before they leave.
  • Coming home. After a private flight into the UK each adult can bring in 42 litres of beer, 18 litres of wine, 200 cigarettes and goods worth up to 270 GBP without duty, plus 4 litres of spirits or 9 litres of fortified wine; from 1 October 2026 sparkling wine is counted with the wine and cider with the beer, which still leaves room for a few cases of Mosel Riesling or Kölsch.

Three situations, three answers

A day at Koelnmesse
A 07:00 take off from Farnborough brings you to Cologne Bonn around 09:15 German time, a quarter of an hour by car from the halls in Deutz. Take off again at 19:00 and you are home at about 19:15 British time. The saving comes on one leg: a jet that has just dropped another party in the Rhineland often flies to Britain empty, and a charter covers the other direction.
A late dinner in Düsseldorf
Düsseldorf closes to jet departures at 22:00. Send the aircraft to Cologne Bonn, have dinner on the Königsallee and drive the 45 minutes south: the General Aviation Terminal can stay open on request, and a quiet jet can leave after 22:00 with a night surcharge on the airport charges.
Carnival weekend
For Weiberfastnacht or Rosenmontag, fly in on the Thursday, when the street carnival begins, and plan the car routes in advance, because parts of the city centre close to traffic. The jet usually leaves after the drop and returns for you on Tuesday or Wednesday, and both of those flights may appear on our list.

Flying to Cologne with a dog or a cat

For entry into Germany from Britain, dogs, cats and ferrets need three things: a microchip, a rabies jab at least 21 days old and an animal health certificate from an official vet dated no more than ten days before landing. British pet passports are not valid for the EU, and from 22 April 2026 EU pet passports held for animals resident in Great Britain stopped being accepted as well, which means a fresh certificate for every journey. Germany requires no tapeworm treatment or blood test for pets from Britain, up to five animals may travel with their owner, and customs check the documents in the General Aviation Terminal.

Dog in the cabin of a private jet to Cologne

The trip home has stricter rules: only an operator approved by the British authorities may carry the pet into the UK, and a dog must receive a tapeworm treatment from a vet 24 to 120 hours before landing, recorded in its papers. Cologne and Bonn have plenty of vets who issue this for travellers, and if you mention the animal in your first message we will quote only operators that can fly it.

Cologne by private jet: what British clients ask us

Which airport should a private jet use for Cologne?
Cologne Bonn, about 15 kilometres from both cities, with its own General Aviation Terminal and a permit for flights around the clock. Düsseldorf, about 45 minutes to the north by road, is the alternative for trips that combine Cologne with the Messe Düsseldorf or the Ruhr.
How many hours is the flight to Cologne?
About 1h 10m from London and Biggin Hill, 1h 15m from Farnborough, Oxford and Southampton, 1h 20m from Birmingham, 1h 25m from Bristol, Manchester, Leeds and Jersey, 1h 30m from Newcastle and Liverpool, 1h 40m from Edinburgh, 1h 45m from Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dublin, 1h 50m from Belfast, and 1h 50m from Cardiff in a Pilatus PC-12.
Can I fly into Cologne at night?
Yes, in a quiet aircraft. Cologne Bonn is permitted to operate around the clock, although louder aircraft are banned between 22:00 and 06:00 and night take offs and landings carry a surcharge. The General Aviation Terminal opens outside its standard hours of 05:00 to 00:30 on request.
Do private flights need a slot at Cologne?
Yes. Cologne Bonn is a fully coordinated airport, so the handler requests a slot for each landing and take off, which is easy outside the busiest fair days.
What does an empty leg to Cologne cost?
Our table starts at about 2,200 GBP for Cologne to Southampton in a Citation M2 and about 2,400 GBP for Cardiff to Cologne in a Pilatus PC-12, each for the whole aircraft. A charter on your own dates costs between 5,300 GBP and 15,000 GBP across the eighteen routes.
Does Germany tax the return flight?
Yes. Germany's air transport tax on commercial flights to Britain has been 13.03 euros per passenger since 1 July 2026, and the operator includes it in the price; the flight out pays British Air Passenger Duty instead.
Is there a lounge for passengers of private jets?
The General Aviation Terminal has a lobby with coffee, conference rooms to hire and a passenger lounge that comes with Business Aviation Centre Cologne's VIP Premium package, at 270 euros plus VAT per direction for the first guest.
Is a visa needed for a trip to Cologne?
No. British citizens can stay up to 90 days in any 180 across Schengen without a visa; the Entry/Exit System registers you on the first crossing, and ETIAS is not required yet.
And if nothing is released for my dates?
Tell us your dates with a little flexibility, the number of passengers and the British airport you prefer. Cologne sits on busy routes and sectors appear at short notice, and in the meantime we quote a charter with the slot already checked.

Call +44 7857 574938 , message the same number on WhatsApp , or write to flight@empty-leg.co.uk . Let us know the dates, the size of the party, any sample cases or golf bags and whether you are heading for Cologne, Bonn or the fair. You receive the fitting empty legs with the charter price for comparison, and once you choose, we book the aircraft, the slot, the General Aviation Terminal and the chauffeur in one go.
