Empty leg flights to and from the Maldives

The Maldives is a chain of some 1,190 coral islands grouped in 26 atolls and stretched across more than 800 kilometres of the Indian Ocean, and most of its resorts occupy an island of their own. Private jets from Britain land at Velana International Airport on Hulhulé, the island beside the capital Malé, and guests finish the journey by seaplane, speedboat or a short domestic flight. Velana handled more than 2,300 private jet movements in 2024, and the number keeps climbing.

The flight from London takes about 9h 35m in a Bombardier Global 6000, one of the ultra long range jets that make the trip without a stop, and the prices here are for that aircraft. Long haul empty legs between Britain and the islands follow the British school holidays: jets fly out full before Christmas, February half term and Easter, often come home empty and later return empty to collect their passengers. Far more sectors link the Maldives with Dubai, Doha, Riyadh and the cities of India, and for a traveller able to start in the Gulf one of them can be the cheapest way into the islands.

Empty legs to and from the Maldives right now

The board shows every sector touching a Maldivian airport, whether Velana, Maafaru, Gan, Hanimaadhoo or Villa International at Maamigili, including the busy runs to Dubai, Doha and India. The second table, the charter list, gives the full price of a Bombardier Global 6000 between British airports and the islands, the benchmark for judging any empty leg.

Ask us what is available at Maldivian airports right now.

This board refreshes through the day as operators release sectors, and it shows only part of the market: a large share of repositioning flights never reach a public list at all. Check back shortly, or tell us your route and dates and we will look at what operators are holding at this moment.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.

Set up an alert for the Maldives

Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up between the UK and the Maldives.

Please fill in both the departure and the arrival city.

Nothing is stored on this site. The button opens a chat with the message already written, and you send it yourself. We reply during office hours, 07:00 to 23:00, and check messages outside them too.

Where Maldives sectors come from

Three forces keep aircraft moving in and out of the islands without passengers.

British holidays in the sun
Families from Britain and the rest of Europe fly out for Christmas and New Year, February half term and Easter. Few operators leave a long range jet idle in the Indian Ocean for a fortnight, so the aircraft usually flies home after the drop and comes back for the return, which puts sectors between the islands and Britain on the board just before Christmas, in the first days of January and around Easter.
The Gulf and India next door
Dubai is about four hours away by jet, Doha and Riyadh a little more, Mumbai under three hours and Colombo a little over one. Gulf families travel for Eid and to escape the summer heat, Indian families around Diwali and Chinese visitors at New Year, and each of those trips leaves aircraft flying one way empty. When airline routes through the Middle East were disrupted in early 2026, 128 private jets landed in the Maldives in two weeks, against 70 in the same fortnight a year earlier.
Nowhere to park
Velana has 68 parking places for private aircraft in three areas, and at the height of the season more than 30 jets can be standing there at once. Operators often drop their guests and fly on to Maafaru, Gan or home, then return for the pickup, and each of those moves is a sector someone else can book.

For a traveller from Britain the cheapest way in is sometimes indirect: an empty leg from London to Dubai, which appears more often than one to the Maldives, followed by a Gulf sector to Velana. The weather sets a rhythm of its own, with the dry northeast monsoon from December to April and the wetter southwest monsoon from May to November, when resort prices come down and fewer jets fly.

Seasonal demand for repositioning flights

Velana International Airport in detail

Five airports in the Maldives accept flights from abroad, but Velana handles the great majority of private jets, and it is where we plan almost every arrival from Britain.

Codes and name MLE (IATA), VRMM (ICAO). Named Velana International Airport since 1 January 2017, after the family house of President Ibrahim Nasir; it is still widely known as Malé International or Ibrahim Nasir International.
Location On Hulhulé island in North Malé Atoll, across a narrow channel from the capital Malé, to which the Sinamalé Bridge has linked it by road since 2018. Hulhumalé, the new town with most of the airport hotels, adjoins it to the north.
History and operator The first airstrip opened on 19 October 1960 and the main runway followed in 1966. Maldives Airports Company Limited, owned by the government, runs the airport today, together with its fuel supply and ground handling.
Runway 18/36, 3,400 metres long and 60 metres wide, in full use since October 2022 and able to take any business jet as well as the largest airliners. The field lies about 2 metres above sea level, and seaplanes use four water runways in the lagoon alongside.
Terminals A new Terminal 1 for international airlines opened on 26 July 2025 with capacity for 7.5 million passengers a year, and the former international building reopened as Terminal 2 for domestic flights in February 2026. Private passengers use the separate four storey VIP terminal, opened in January 2022, and the Noovilu Seaplane Terminal, opened in October 2022, serves the resorts.
Private jet traffic More than 2,300 private jet movements in 2024, about 10 per cent up on 2023, with the peak over Christmas and New Year. On 3 March 2026 the country recorded 18 private jet landings in a single day.
Permission and slots Every private or charter flight needs prior permission and a slot, requested through a local handling agent. Outside the peak a week's notice is usually enough; from November to March, allow up to a month.
Parking Three parking areas with 68 places in total. In the busiest weeks the landing may be accepted only as a drop and go, with the aircraft leaving for another airport to wait.
Fuel Jet fuel is supplied only by the airport company, and the fuel release is normally sent 48 hours ahead.
Formalities Immigration and customs for private passengers take place in the VIP terminal, where officers check passports in the lounge. British visitors receive a free 30 day tourist visa on arrival.
Handling agents Handling is compulsory, and several local agents act for visiting jets, among them Flight Support Maldives, Avia Maldives and IFOS Aviation Services.
Getting away By car over the bridge to Malé in 10 to 15 minutes, by speedboat to resorts in the Malé atolls, and by seaplane or domestic flight to the rest of the country.

Velana is our default for the Maldives. We move an arrival to Maafaru when the resort lies in Noonu, Raa or Baa and the seaplane hop from there is shorter, and to Gan for the resorts of Addu Atoll in the far south.

Where private passengers are handled at Velana

Velana has no FBO terminals of the European kind. The airport company handles the aircraft, a local agent looks after the passengers, and the building they pass through is the VIP terminal.

The VIP terminal
The four storey building opened in January 2022 to a concept by the architect Yuji Yamazaki, replacing a lounge of just 670 square metres. Its first phase covers about 3,200 square metres of a planned 6,800, with VVIP suites on the ground floor and the VIP and CIP lounges, among them the Maamahi Executive Lounge, on the floors above.
Steps, car and lounge
A car meets the jet on the apron and takes passengers the short distance to the VIP terminal, where immigration officers come to the lounge to check passports. Allow about 15 minutes from landing to leaving the airport, and the lounge can be used for up to three hours while a seaplane or boat is readied.
The agent at your side
The agent requests the landing permit and the slot, reserves parking, sends the fuel release, books the crew's hotel and agrees the timing of the transfer with the resort.
Inside the Maamahi lounge
Open from 5.30 am to 11.30 pm every day, the lounge serves an all day buffet of hot Maldivian and international dishes, snacks, fresh juices, coffee and tea. There are private cabins for a quiet wait, a prayer room, a baby care room, a smoking cabin and fast wireless internet, and departing guests can shop from a duty free counter inside. Alcohol is not served, in keeping with Maldivian law.
Bags without a belt
The lounge staff collect the luggage from the aircraft and look after its clearance, so nobody waits at a belt or pushes a trolley, and the bags travel on with you to the seaplane, the boat or the car.
For airline passengers
Travellers on scheduled flights can book the lounge through the airport's CIP service for a few hundred dollars a person, more in the high season, with immigration handled inside. It suits the direction of a trip that is not flown privately.
The Noovilu seaplane terminal
Opened on 6 October 2022, the 28,000 square metre building is described by the airport company as the largest seaplane terminal in the world, with room for more than 100 seaplanes. Of its 42 lounges, 40 are leased to resorts, whose own staff look after their guests there, and the airport runs the other two; guests are driven there from the main terminal in about ten minutes.
Seaplane operators
Trans Maldivian Airways, which describes itself as the largest seaplane operator in the world with more than 65 de Havilland Twin Otters, flies from Noovilu alongside Manta Air. Its Coral lounge adds showers, recliners and massage chairs for guests who have to wait for a shared flight.
Private seaplanes
A shared seaplane waits to fill and may stop at other resorts, so one to two hours at the airport is normal, and longer in busy periods. Chartering the whole aircraft costs from about 1,200 dollars one way for a short hop to around 15,000 dollars for the most distant atolls; it leaves when you are ready and flies straight to your island.
Speedboats from the jetty
Resorts in North and South Malé Atolls send their own speedboats to the jetty beside Terminal 2, a short walk from international arrivals, and most can run them at any hour. A boat is the answer for a landing after the last seaplane has gone.
A proper meal nearby
No alcohol is served anywhere in the airport, and the terminals offer little more than coffee and snacks. For a real meal, the Hulhulé Island Hotel next to the airport, about five minutes away by shuttle, has restaurants, a pool, a spa and a licensed bar, useful for crews and for anyone who misses the last seaplane.
Parking and repositioning
With 68 places in three areas, Velana fills quickly around Christmas, New Year and the Gulf holidays. Many operators book a drop and go and send the aircraft to Maafaru, whose apron now holds about 30 jets, to Gan, or back to base, and the agent confirms where the jet will wait before the permit is issued.

Your first contact on the ground is the handling agent rather than a terminal company, so we name the agent in the quote, pass on the passenger list and the resort transfer, and confirm the parking plan before the aircraft leaves Britain.

The terminal from a passenger's side

After nearly ten hours in the air, the arrival at Velana itself is quick, and the transfer that follows is what needs care.

ARRIVAL
Straight on to the transfer
With passports checked in the lounge, the resort's host usually meets you there, and a car takes the party either to the Noovilu seaplane terminal, about ten minutes away, or to the speedboat jetty. Airline passengers in the main terminal can need 75 to 90 minutes at busy times just to reach the arrivals hall.
DOCUMENTS
Visa, IMUGA and a booking
British visitors need a machine readable passport valid for at least a month after arrival, a confirmed return journey, a prepaid booking at a registered resort or hotel and enough money for the stay, and in return receive a free 30 day visa. Every traveller, children included, must also submit the online IMUGA declaration within 96 hours before landing.
CUSTOMS
What stays on the aircraft
Alcohol, pork products and idols for worship may not be brought into the Maldives, so bottles from the aircraft's bar stay on board and the resorts serve their own.
SEAPLANE
Daylight only
Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so for a same day transfer the jet should land by about 3 pm, earlier for the most distant atolls, and the first flights out to the islands leave early in the morning. Each aircraft carries up to 15 passengers and, on shared flights, 20 kg of checked luggage plus 5 kg in the cabin per person, with extra weight charged at about 5 dollars a kilo.
LUGGAGE
Big hold, small seaplane
A Global 6000 carries about 5.5 cubic metres of luggage in a hold reachable in flight, far more than a seaplane takes. Families with golf bags, dive kit or a month's wardrobe book a private seaplane or send the extra bags by speedboat, and surfboards travel only on chartered seaplanes.
TIMING
Leave London in the evening
A departure from London at about 10 pm lands at Velana at about 11.30 am local time in summer and 12.30 pm in winter, in good time for the seaplane. On the way home, leaving the islands around 1 pm brings the jet into London at about 7.30 pm in summer.
LATE ARRIVALS
After the last seaplane
A landing after about 3 pm means a speedboat for resorts near Malé, a domestic flight and a boat for some southern atolls, or a night at a hotel on Hulhulé or in Hulhumalé and the first seaplane the next morning. Resorts further out can send a private yacht instead, at a price.
WEATHER
Two monsoons
The northeast monsoon brings the dry, sunny months from December to April. From May to November the southwest monsoon brings more rain, wind and choppy crossings, and a squall can hold the seaplanes on the water for an hour or two.
CLOCKS
Island time
Maldives Time is five hours ahead of Greenwich all year, so the islands are five hours ahead of Britain in winter and four from late March to late October. Some resorts set their clocks an hour ahead of Malé to give guests longer evenings, so check which time the transfer is booked in.
MONEY
Dollars, service and tax
Resorts price in US dollars and add a 10 per cent service charge and 17 per cent tourism goods and services tax to most bills, plus a green tax of 12 dollars per guest per night, from which children under two are exempt.
DEPARTURE
The way home
If you are leaving the resort by seaplane, plan the jet's departure for after about 9 am, and a slot around midday or early afternoon leaves room for the transfer. At Velana the bags go from the boat or car to the aircraft, passports are checked in the VIP lounge, there is time for the duty free counter, and a car usually takes you to the steps.
TAX
Charges for private passengers
Since 1 December 2024 every passenger leaving Velana on a private jet pays a departure tax of 480 dollars and an airport development fee of another 480, so 960 dollars a head, against 100 dollars for a foreign passenger in economy. Operators normally pass the charges on through the handling bill.
BY AIRLINE
Heathrow and Malé
British Airways flies nonstop from Heathrow to Malé several times a week, and Virgin Atlantic adds a seasonal service between late October and April, so the direction not covered by an empty leg can be flown in a flat bed business seat.
PETS
No dogs in the Maldives
Dogs may not be imported into the Maldives at all. Cats can travel with a microchip, a rabies vaccination and a vet's certificate, but bringing one home to Britain needs months of preparation.
MALÉ
The capital across the bridge
Malé lies about ten minutes from the terminal by car across the Sinamalé Bridge, and most ministries, banks and business meetings are there, while the hotels closest to the airport are in Hulhumalé.
ONWARD
Domestic flights
Resorts in the outer atolls are reached by a domestic flight from Terminal 2 at Velana to Kooddoo, Kadhdhoo, Dharavandhoo or another regional airport, followed by a short speedboat ride. Coming from abroad, your own jet can often fly straight to Maafaru, Gan or Hanimaadhoo instead.

The formalities at Velana take minutes. The seaplane timetable, the parking plan and the rules on what may come ashore take longer to arrange, and we settle them when the flight is booked.

VIP terminal lounge for private jet passengers

Four rules that shape a Maldives trip

Ten hours needs the right jet
London to Malé is about 4,600 nautical miles. The Bombardier Global 6000 and 6500, the Gulfstream G650 and the Dassault Falcon 8X fly it nonstop, while a Challenger 650 or a G450 needs a fuel stop, usually in the Gulf, which adds about two hours. The exact routing depends on which airspace over the Middle East is open at the time.
Permit and parking first
No private flight lands at Velana without prior permission, a slot and a confirmed plan for the aircraft. In the season we apply a month ahead and decide at booking whether the jet waits at Velana, at Maafaru or elsewhere.
Land before the last seaplane
Seaplanes stop flying before dusk, so the departure from Britain is timed to land by the middle of the afternoon. If the schedule slips, we arrange a speedboat or a night near the airport rather than a rushed connection.
Know what may come ashore
No alcohol, no pork and no dogs, and an IMUGA declaration for every traveller within 96 hours of landing. We send the checklist with the flight confirmation.

With the aircraft, the permit, the timing and the paperwork settled, what remains is a long flight and a short hop across a lagoon.

Private jet on the apron before departure

What the ground costs in the Maldives

Charges at Velana are modest beside the price of the flight; the Maldivian passenger taxes and British duty are the larger items.

On the invoice
Landing and parking charges set by the airport company, the handling agent's fee for permits, VIP handling and the fuel release, and the cost of repositioning to Maafaru or Gan if the jet cannot stay at Velana
Maldivian taxes
960 dollars in departure tax and airport development fee for each private jet passenger leaving Velana since December 2024, plus, at the resort, a green tax of 12 dollars a night and 17 per cent tax and 10 per cent service on the bill
Air Passenger Duty
Band B, as Malé lies less than 5,500 miles from London: 1,097 GBP per passenger at the higher rate until March 2027 and 1,132.76 GBP from April 2027, due on a Global 6000 like any jet of 20 tonnes or more

Only the departure from Britain carries the duty, and a flight leaving Jersey or Guernsey carries none. When the higher rate is extended to all private jets from 5.7 tonnes in April 2027, a Maldives trip is not affected by the change, because every aircraft able to reach the islands nonstop pays that rate already.

A resort stay of ten days or two weeks is longer than most operators will leave a jet on a crowded apron, so the aircraft usually flies away after the drop and returns for the pickup. Those two flights without passengers become the empty legs on the board. When we quote your own trip, the Maldivian taxes, the agent's handling and any repositioning are listed separately from the charter price.

Maafaru, Gan and the other airports of the Maldives

Four more airports take flights from abroad, and domestic airfields reach the outer atolls. The right one depends on the atoll, the size of the jet and the time of day.

Maafaru, NMF. In Noonu Atoll about 180 kilometres north of Malé, opened in 2019 and run by Island Aviation Services. Its runway was extended to 2,850 metres in July 2025 and its apron now takes about 30 jets; it handled 804 private jet movements in 2025, 38 per cent more than in 2024. Customs are on site, and the resorts of Noonu, Raa and Baa are a short seaplane hop away.
Gan, GAN. On Addu Atoll at the southern tip of the country, just below the equator, on the site of the former RAF station handed back in 1976. Its long runway takes any business jet and works around the clock with customs on site, seaplanes based here serve the resorts of Addu and Huvadhu, and operators use it to park when Velana is full.
Hanimaadhoo, HAQ. In Haa Dhaalu Atoll in the far north. The modernised airport, with a runway of about 2,465 metres and a new terminal, was inaugurated in November 2025 and has customs for international flights, although its opening hours are limited.
Villa International, VAM. At Maamigili in South Ari Atoll, built privately by the Villa group. Its 1,800 metre runway suits smaller jets and customs are available, but there is no fuel and the field closes in the late afternoon.
Domestic airfields. Dharavandhoo for Baa, Ifuru for Raa, Kadhdhoo for Laamu, Kooddoo for Gaafu Alifu and a dozen others take domestic turboprops, which connect with the resort speedboats. A private jet arriving from abroad cannot clear customs at any of them.

From Velana to the resorts and Malé

Typical transfer times from Velana in fair weather. Seaplanes wait for enough guests and for daylight, and a squall in the wet season can add an hour.

Destination By sea or air Notes
Malé 10 to 15 minutes by car Over the Sinamalé Bridge; ferries also cross in about 10 minutes
Hulhumalé About 10 minutes by car Airport hotels and the new town north of the runway
North Malé Atoll 15 to 45 minutes by speedboat Or 10 to 15 minutes by seaplane
South Malé Atoll 30 to 60 minutes by speedboat Most resorts send boats at any hour
Ari Atoll 20 to 30 minutes by seaplane Or a domestic flight to Maamigili and a boat
Baa Atoll 30 to 35 minutes by seaplane Or a domestic flight to Dharavandhoo
Raa Atoll About 45 minutes by seaplane Or a short seaplane hop from Maafaru
Noonu and Lhaviyani 45 to 60 minutes by seaplane Noonu resorts are minutes from Maafaru
Haa Alif and Haa Dhaalu About 70 minutes by seaplane Or a jet to Hanimaadhoo and a boat
Laamu Atoll About 70 minutes by seaplane Or a domestic flight to Kadhdhoo and a boat
Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu About 55 minutes by domestic flight To Kooddoo, then 15 minutes or more by speedboat
Addu Atoll About 1h 10m by domestic flight Or fly your own jet straight to Gan from abroad

Transfers are booked with the resort, which confirms the seaplane seat or boat once it knows the landing time, and we send it the flight details as soon as the slot is confirmed. For a large family or a lot of luggage, a private seaplane or yacht removes the weight limits of shared flights and the wait for other guests.

Popular routes between the UK and the Maldives, and which way they run empty

Every figure below buys the whole of a Bombardier Global 6000 for a sector that its operator would otherwise fly with nobody on board. Chartering that aircraft for your own dates costs almost two and a half times as much, and the list beneath the board sets out those figures. The times are for the flight alone, and the leg home is the longer one, flown against the westerlies.

Route In the air Empty leg from Season Which way it usually runs empty
London to Maldives 9h 35m 50,700 GBP Early January and April Out empty to collect families after Christmas or Easter
Maldives to London 10h 25m 55,100 GBP December and March Home after dropping families for Christmas or Easter
Birmingham to Maldives 9h 40m 51,200 GBP January Occasional, out to collect a family
Maldives to Manchester 10h 35m 56,000 GBP December Home after a Christmas drop
Manchester to Maldives 9h 45m 51,600 GBP January and February Out to collect after New Year or half term
Maldives to Bristol 10h 35m 56,000 GBP Winter Occasional, home after a drop
Maldives to Leeds 10h 30m 55,600 GBP Winter Occasional, home after a drop
Newcastle to Maldives 9h 45m 51,600 GBP Spring Occasional, out for a pickup
Maldives to Edinburgh 10h 45m 56,900 GBP December Home after a Christmas drop
Edinburgh to Maldives 9h 50m 52,000 GBP January Out to collect a Scottish party
Glasgow to Maldives 9h 55m 52,500 GBP February Occasional, out for a half term pickup
Maldives to Glasgow 10h 45m 56,900 GBP Winter Home after a drop
Maldives to Aberdeen 10h 40m 56,400 GBP Winter Occasional, home after a drop
Belfast to Maldives 10h 00m 52,900 GBP January Occasional, out for a pickup
Maldives to Dublin 10h 55m 57,800 GBP December and April Home after an Irish family drop
Dublin to Maldives 10h 00m 52,900 GBP January Out to collect after the holidays
Maldives to Jersey 10h 30m 55,600 GBP Winter Occasional, home after a family drop
Cardiff to Maldives 9h 45m 51,600 GBP Spring Occasional, out for a pickup

Sectors between Britain and the Maldives are usually released a few days to a week before the flight, and outside the holidays only a handful appear in a month. The Gulf route is far busier, so a traveller who can start from Dubai has many more to choose from.

Arriving in the Maldives from the UK

At Velana the formalities for private passengers take place in the VIP terminal, and the list below covers what they involve.

  • Passport. Maldives Immigration asks for a machine readable passport valid for at least one month from arrival; a longer margin avoids questions from airlines and operators along the way.
  • Visa on arrival. British citizens receive a free tourist visa for up to 30 days on landing, provided they hold a confirmed return journey, a prepaid booking at a registered resort, hotel or guesthouse and enough money for the stay. Longer stays need an extension from Maldives Immigration.
  • IMUGA. The Traveller Declaration is free and made online, one for each person including babies; it opens 96 hours before landing, and the confirmation is worth keeping to hand.
  • Prohibited goods. Alcohol, pork and pork products, idols for worship, pornography, narcotics and vapes are banned, prescription medicines should travel with a copy of the prescription, and since November 2025 no one born on or after 1 January 2007 may buy or use tobacco in the Maldives, visitors included.
  • Duty free into the Maldives. Each visitor may bring 200 cigarettes, 25 cigars or 250 grams of tobacco and other personal goods worth up to 10,000 rufiyaa; anything above that is declared.
  • Leaving. Each private jet passenger departing from Velana owes 960 dollars in Maldivian departure charges, half of it waived for children under two, and the operator usually settles the total with the handling agent.
  • Home to Britain. On a private flight into Great Britain the allowances are 42 litres of beer, 18 litres of wine, counting sparkling wine from 1 October 2026, 4 litres of spirits and 200 cigarettes for each traveller aged 17 or over, plus other goods worth up to 270 GBP for every traveller, children included.

Empty leg calendar for the Maldives, month by month

The Maldives has two seasons for the weather but several for private flying, set by the British school holidays, the Gulf calendar and the festivals of India and China.

Demand
What draws travellers to the Maldives in each month, from Christmas and the school holidays to Eid and Chinese New Year, and how it moves charter prices.
Empty legs
How often sectors to and from the Maldives appear in a typical month, and the usual margin between their price and a full charter.

January
Very busyStrong
The New Year peak runs into the first week, then jets fly out from Britain and Europe empty to collect families, one of the best moments for a sector out to the islands.
February
Very busyGood
Chinese New Year on 6 February 2027 and British half term in the middle of the month fill the resorts, while Ramadan, expected to begin around 8 February, slows travel from the Gulf until Eid.
March
BusyGood
Eid al Fitr, expected around 9 or 10 March 2027, brings Gulf families, and Easter Sunday on 28 March starts the British spring holidays.
April
BusyGood
The Easter return runs into mid April, the last dry weeks of the season, and jets fly out from Britain empty to collect families.
May
SteadyFair
The southwest monsoon arrives with some of the wettest weeks of the year and resort rates drop, while Eid al Adha, expected around 16 May 2027, brings a burst of Gulf traffic.
June
QuietFair
Showers come and go between sunny spells, and Gulf families start their summer trips to escape the heat at home.
July
SteadyGood
Gulf and Indian families travel in numbers and short sectors to Dubai, Doha and Mumbai are frequent, while the British summer holidays begin.
August
SteadyGood
Honeymooners and European families make the most of lower rates; flights from Britain are occasional, Gulf sectors plentiful.
September
QuietThin
The quietest month of the year for private flights to the islands.
October
SteadyFair
British half term at the end of the month and the first dry spells bring the season back.
November
BusyGood
Diwali on 8 November 2026 brings Indian travellers, and the northeast monsoon returns with calmer seas.
December
Very busyStrong
The busiest weeks of the year: Velana's aprons fill, jets drop families and leave for Maafaru, Gan or home, and sectors appear in both directions.

For the long crossing from Britain, watch the first week of January, the days before Christmas and the Easter fortnight. For the Gulf and India sectors, look to Eid, the summer months and Diwali.

Three situations, three answers

Christmas and New Year in the atolls
Book early: permits, slots and parking for the last ten days of December go first, and Velana often accepts the landing only as a drop and go. Land by mid afternoon for the seaplane and let the jet leave for Maafaru or home. The season's empty legs run out to the islands in the first days of January, so a family that can start its holiday after New Year has the best chance of one.
A resort in Noonu, Raa or Baa
Fly straight to Maafaru instead of Velana. Customs officers are on site, the seaplane hop to the resorts of the three atolls is short, and the jet can often stay on the apron, now enlarged to hold about 30 aircraft, rather than repositioning.
Travelling through Dubai
For a traveller who can start from Dubai, the choice widens. Sectors between Dubai and the Maldives run in both directions most weeks and flights between London and Dubai appear on the board regularly, so a journey in two sectors through Dubai can cost well under a nonstop charter from Britain.

Flying to the Maldives with a dog or a cat

The Maldives does not allow dogs into the country at all, so a dog stays at home. A cat may travel with an ISO microchip, a rabies vaccination given between 30 days and 12 months before arrival and a health certificate completed by a vet within ten days of entry; check first that the resort accepts cats, since many do not.

Bringing the cat home is the harder part. The Maldives is not one of Great Britain's listed countries for pet travel, so besides the microchip and vaccination the cat needs a rabies blood test taken at least 30 days after the vaccination, and without the right paperwork prepared before departure it faces a three month wait from the date of the sample. It must also travel on an approved route, with an operator approved to carry animals and with a Great Britain health certificate. Talk to your vet several months before the trip, and mention the cat in your first message to us.

Questions about flying private to the Maldives

How long does a private jet take from London to the Maldives?
About 9h 35m on the way out in a Global 6000 and 10h 25m on the way back, since the return runs into the westerlies. From Scotland and Ireland add 15 to 30 minutes.
Which airport do private jets use in the Maldives?
Velana, on Hulhulé next to Malé, for almost every arrival from Europe. Maafaru suits resorts in Noonu, Raa and Baa, Gan the resorts of Addu, and Hanimaadhoo the far north.
What is the VIP terminal at Velana like?
A four storey building opened in 2022, separate from the airline terminal. Its Maamahi lounge offers an all day buffet, private cabins, a prayer room, a baby care room, wireless internet and a duty free counter, and immigration officers come to you there.
Is there a restaurant at the airport?
Not in the full sense. The Maamahi lounge has an all day buffet and the terminals sell coffee and snacks, while the Hulhulé Island Hotel next door has proper restaurants and a licensed bar.
What does a private seaplane cost?
It depends on the distance: a short hop starts at around 1,200 dollars for the aircraft, while the furthest resorts can charge some 15,000. You avoid the wait for other guests and the extra stops.
Can the jet fly us straight to the resort?
No resort island has a runway for a jet. The aircraft lands at Velana, Maafaru, Gan or Hanimaadhoo, and a seaplane, speedboat or domestic flight completes the journey.
How much is an empty leg from Britain to the Maldives?
A whole Bombardier Global 6000 starts at about 50,700 GBP from London to the Maldives and 55,100 GBP for the flight back, against roughly 120,000 to 140,000 GBP for a full charter of the same aircraft.
Can a smaller jet reach the Maldives?
Yes, with one fuel stop, usually in the Gulf. A Challenger 650 or a Gulfstream G450 adds about two hours to the journey, and some travellers accept that for a lower price.
Do British visitors need a visa?
No. A free 30 day visa is issued on arrival, as long as you hold a return journey, a prepaid booking and an IMUGA declaration submitted within 96 hours of landing.
Can we bring champagne on the jet?
It must stay on the aircraft, since alcohol may not be brought into the Maldives. Resorts sell wine and spirits, and the aircraft's bar is there again for the flight home.
Why does our jet leave after dropping us?
Velana has 68 parking places for private aircraft and fills in the high season, and a jet waiting two weeks costs parking and crew time. Most operators fly it to Maafaru, Gan or home and bring it back for the return.
Can we land in the Maldives after dark?
Evening arrivals at Velana are routine, but seaplanes do not fly after dark. A resort close to Malé will send a boat, and a few southern atolls can be reached by an evening domestic flight; otherwise book a room near the airport and catch the first seaplane.
Do empty legs run between Dubai and the islands?
Many. The four hour route is one of the busiest private corridors to the islands, with sectors in both directions most weeks, especially around Eid and during the Gulf summer.
And if nothing is released for my dates?
Let us know where you would fly from, the dates and how much flexibility you have. We follow Velana, Maafaru and the Gulf routes and send you a match as soon as one appears, most often in late December, early January and around Easter.

Call +44 7857 574938 , message the same number on WhatsApp , or write to flight@empty-leg.co.uk . Tell us the resort or atoll, your dates, the number of passengers and bags and whether a pet is travelling, and we will reply with matching sectors, a full charter price, the taxes and the transfer plan.
