Empty leg flights to and from Venice

Few cities anywhere are reached by boat from the airport, and Venice is the most famous of them. From the private jet dock at Marco Polo a water taxi crosses the lagoon in about half an hour and stops at the landing stage of your hotel on the Grand Canal, the Giudecca or the Lido. The city of the Doges, St Mark's Basilica and the Rialto draws visitors all year, and the calendar is full: the Carnival in winter, the Biennale of art or architecture from May to November, the Film Festival on the Lido at the turn of August and September and the regattas of summer. Italian clocks run an hour ahead of British ones, and a light jet covers the distance from London in about two hours.

For private flights, Venice means Marco Polo Airport, code VCE, on the mainland shore of the lagoon at Tessera, with its own general aviation terminal and boat dock. Treviso, about 30 kilometres inland and run by SAVE's subsidiary AerTre, is the second choice, and the grass airfield on the Lido takes only light propeller aircraft.

Venice sectors available today

The list below shows every sector we hold into or out of Venice. When Venice itself is quiet, it adds flights at Treviso, Trieste and Verona, the airports where aircraft most often reposition, wait or drop passengers bound for the Venetian lagoon. The price list beneath it gives the cost of the same aircraft as an ordinary charter on dates you choose yourself.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.

Set up an alert for Nice

Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up between the UK and Nice.

Please fill in both the departure and the arrival city.

Nothing is stored on this site. The button opens a chat with the message already written, and you send it yourself. We reply during office hours, 07:00 to 23:00, and check messages outside them too.

Why Venice sends so many jets home empty

Venice is a place people stay in for several days, but its airport has little room for visiting aircraft to wait. In the busy months the jet drops its passengers, turns round and leaves, and it comes back empty at the end of the stay, so almost every trip produces two sectors that an operator will sell.

No room for a long stay
In 2026 Venice accepted visiting business jets for quick turns only from May to September, with stays limited to 48 to 72 hours in the other months, and the airport has only a handful of stands for business aircraft. A jet that brings a family for a week has to fly home or on to another airport and return for the pickup.
The Biennale and the festivals
The Biennale runs from May to November, the Film Festival fills the Lido at the turn of August and September, and the Carnival brings visitors in late January and February. Guests arrive on fixed dates and leave on others, and the aircraft between them fly empty.
Hotels on the water
The grand hotels of the Grand Canal, the Giudecca and the Lido attract long weekends and weeks from Britain, and the families and couples who stay in them rarely keep an aircraft waiting.
Villas, the Dolomites and the Prosecco hills
Venice is also the gateway to the Palladian villas of the Brenta, the Prosecco hills and Cortina d'Ampezzo, so many passengers land at Venice and fly home from another airport, and the other way round.
Italy as a busy market
Venice saw 6,901 business aviation movements in 2025, and the airport lies within easy reach of the business aviation bases of northern Italy, Switzerland and Austria, whose aircraft pass through on their way between clients.

Sectors are released in every month, with the most between May and October and around the Carnival. Because a visiting jet usually has to leave soon after the drop in summer, operators often release the flight home at a day's notice.

Venice Marco Polo Airport in detail

Marco Polo Airport opened on 31 July 1961 and replaced the old airfield on the Lido as the city's airport. SAVE, whose group also runs Treviso, operates it, and the present terminal opened in 2002. In 2025 the airport handled 11,850,336 passengers, 2.2 per cent more than in 2024, with 87,597 aircraft movements, and it is Italy's third airport for long haul flights. The main runway was rebuilt in 2019, a moving walkway has linked the terminal with the boat dock since 2017, and a rail link to the national network is under construction.

Codes VCE (IATA) and LIPZ (ICAO)
Location Tessera, on the mainland shore of the lagoon, about 7.5 kilometres north east of the historic centre across the water and about 13 kilometres by road
Runways Two parallel runways: 04R/22L of 3,300 metres, the main runway, and 04L/22R of 2,780 metres, which serves as a taxiway while the main runway is in use
Elevation About 2 metres, or 7 feet, above sea level
Operator SAVE S.p.A.
Hours The airport and its tower are open 24 hours a day; the general aviation terminal works from 06:00 to 22:00 as standard, with longer hours on request
Slots and permission Venice is a coordinated airport, handling is compulsory and every private flight needs prior permission, best requested 24 to 48 hours ahead
Parking Only a few stands for business aircraft; quick turns only from May to September in 2026, and stays of 48 to 72 hours in the other months
Handlers Venice General Aviation, run by SAVE and part of the Signature Select network, Sky Services, Universal Aviation and AviaVIP
Traffic 11,850,336 passengers and 87,597 movements in 2025
Business aircraft 6,901 business aviation movements in 2025, led by the Citation XLS, the Phenom 300 and the Citation Latitude
By water Private water taxis leave from the dock beside the general aviation terminal; the public Alilaguna boats run from the main terminal dock to Murano, the Lido and the centre

For crews, Venice is an easy airport to fly into: a long runway at sea level, instrument approaches from both directions and no night closure. The difficulty is on the ground. Stands for business aircraft are few, and in summer the airport accepts visiting jets only for a quick turn, so the plan for where the aircraft waits matters as much as the flight itself. Treviso is the nearest alternative, Trieste and Verona are each more than an hour away by road, and in high summer many operators simply fly home.

The general aviation terminal, the handlers and the private dock

Private passengers at Venice use the general aviation terminal, a separate building beside the main terminal with its own passport control and customs, and, a few steps away, a dock reserved for their boats. Several handling companies work there, each with its own lounge.

Venice General Aviation
The official handler of the airport company SAVE, part of the Signature Select network since 2019, offers lounges with wireless internet, satellite television, international magazines, snacks and drinks, meet and greet, Mercedes minivans across the apron, catering prepared by selected chefs, a concierge for hotels, limousines and water taxis, an express laundry for crews and guests, and transport between the general aviation terminal and the main terminal for anyone in the party catching an airline flight.
Sky Services and its Natuzzi lounge
Sky Services opened its FBO inside the general aviation terminal in May 2010, a few steps from the pier where the water taxis wait. Its VIP lounge was designed with the Italian furniture maker Natuzzi, and there are two snooze rooms with colour light therapy, a crew lounge, a coffee area and free internet, with catering from the group's Sky Cuisine service.
Universal Aviation Venice
Universal's Venice station works from 06:00 to 22:00, around the clock on request, with a VIP passenger lounge, a conference room and a crew lounge. From touchdown to the boat takes 15 to 20 minutes for a party of up to five arriving from abroad.
AviaVIP at Tessera
AviaVIP runs a luxury VIP lounge with computers, a printer, a crew room and a prayer room, handles customs and immigration on site and welcomes pets.
The private dock
The boat dock for private passengers lies beside the general aviation terminal, with an access reserved for them, so the walk from the aircraft to the water taxi takes only a few minutes. The handler carries the luggage from the aircraft to the boat.
A new terminal wing
SAVE is enlarging the main terminal, and the rail link to Mestre and the national network is due to open in 2027. Neither changes the route of private passengers, who stay in their own terminal and on their own dock.

It is normally the aircraft operator who picks the handling company, though we can request a specific one if you prefer its lounge or services.

From the aircraft to the water taxi, step by step

Arriving in Venice by private jet is quick and unlike anywhere else: minutes on land, then half an hour on the water, and the same in reverse on the way home.

ON THE APRON
A minivan at the aircraft
A member of the handler's staff meets the aircraft with a minivan and drives you and your bags to the general aviation terminal, a short ride across the apron.
THE BORDER
Passports in the terminal
Venice is on the Schengen border, so Italian police check every passport on a flight from Britain, and on the first crossing under the Entry/Exit System travellers aged twelve and over give fingerprints and everyone is photographed. The whole border and customs check in the terminal usually takes five to ten minutes.
LUGGAGE
Straight to the boat
The handler sorts the luggage and carries it from the hold to the water taxi, and on departure from the boat to the aircraft. Mention large suitcases, golf bags or skis in advance, because a water taxi takes at most 12 cases.
THE LOUNGES
A short stop
Most private passengers pass straight through, but the lounges offer coffee, drinks, snacks, international magazines, satellite television and wireless internet if you are early or waiting for the boat.
FOOD
Chefs on request
Meals for the lounge or the flight are prepared by selected chefs the handlers work with, and they are best ordered 24 to 48 hours ahead. A Venetian dinner is better kept for the city, half an hour away by boat.
THE WATER TAXI
Half an hour across the lagoon
The boat reaches the historic centre in 20 to 30 minutes. The official city fare to the centre is 110 euros for up to four passengers and four bags, with 10 euros for each extra passenger, 3 euros for each extra case and 10 euros more between 22:00 and 06:00, although the operators' own prices are often higher; a boat takes up to ten people.
TO YOUR HOTEL
The landing stage at the door
Most of the grand hotels on the Grand Canal, the Giudecca and the Lido have their own landing stage, so the water taxi delivers you and your bags to the hotel's own door.
BY ROAD
Cars for the mainland
For Mestre, the Brenta villas, Treviso, the Dolomites or Lake Garda, the handler arranges a car, and your driver can meet you at the general aviation terminal.
WHEN TO ARRIVE
Thirty minutes before
For the flight home, arrive at the general aviation terminal about 30 minutes before departure, and allow for the lagoon: in fog or a strong wind the water taxi may take longer.
LATE ARRIVALS
After 22:00
The airport never closes, but the general aviation terminal works from 06:00 to 22:00 as standard, so landing later means paying the handler for extra hours, and the boat charges its night supplement too.
TAX FREE
Customs before boarding
Visitors resident outside the EU can reclaim Italian VAT on larger purchases, provided customs confirm the export at the airport. Tell the handler the day before, and keep the goods and receipts to hand.
AIRLINE ONE WAY
British Airways, easyJet and Ryanair
When the private flight covers only one direction, the other can be booked with British Airways, easyJet or Ryanair, which link Venice or Treviso with the London airports, or with easyJet to Manchester. In the main terminal, the Marco Polo Lounge, listed by card schemes as the Marco Polo Club, lies after security and before passport control for flights outside Schengen, which includes every flight to Britain. It is open from 05:00 to 22:30 for stays of up to three hours, with a buffet, Italian wines and prosecco, showers and a terrace looking across the lagoon to the bell tower of St Mark's. The Aspire Executive Lounge before security includes fast track through the security check, and a food court waits after security.

Timing is the only real constraint. In summer the aircraft must leave soon after the drop, and the flight home has to fit the terminal's hours and the boat's crossing, so we plan the water taxi together with the slot.

Five things to know before booking Venice

Every one of these points affects the cost or the timing, which is why each Venice quote deals with them from the start.

Summer means a quick turn
From May to September the airport normally accepts visiting business jets only for a quick turn. A week in Venice is priced as two one way flights, and the aircraft waits elsewhere or flies home between them.
Permission before every flight
Handling is compulsory and every flight needs prior permission and a slot, requested by the handler. During the Film Festival and the busiest Biennale weekends, ask as soon as the dates are fixed.
The Italian tax per passenger
Italy charges a tax on each passenger of a private charter on every flight into and out of the country: 100 euros from London, the rest of England and Wales except Newcastle, and Jersey, and 200 euros from Newcastle, Scotland, Belfast and Dublin.
The lagoon sets the pace
Everything after landing happens by boat, so the handler books the water taxi with the flight, and fog in winter can slow the crossing.
A city fee on day trips
On set days from April to July in 2026 the city charged day visitors an access fee, while guests staying overnight in the city were exempt. It never passes through the flight invoice.

From the airport to the city, the lagoon and the mainland

Most destinations in Venice are reached by water. The times below are for a private water taxi from the airport dock, or by car for the mainland, in good weather and outside the rush hours.

Destination From Marco Polo What is there
Murano About 15 minutes by water The glass furnaces and the island museums
Fondamenta Nove and Cannaregio About 20 minutes by water The northern edge of the city and the quieter quarters
Rialto and the Grand Canal About 25 minutes by water The market, the bridge and the palazzo hotels along the canal
St Mark's Square About 30 minutes by water The basilica, the Doge's Palace and the waterfront hotels
Giudecca About 30 minutes by water The island opposite St Mark's and its hotels with gardens and pools
Lido About 30 minutes by water The beaches, the Film Festival and the grand seafront hotels
Piazzale Roma About 20 minutes by car The road terminus of the city and the People Mover
Padua About 40 minutes by car The Scrovegni Chapel, the university and the Brenta villas on the way
Valdobbiadene About 1h 10m by car The Prosecco hills, listed by UNESCO
Verona About 1h 15m by car The Arena and the gateway to Lake Garda
Cortina d'Ampezzo About 2 hours by car The Dolomites, skiing in winter and walking in summer

The Alilaguna public boats run from the same airport dock to Murano, the Lido and the centre and take an hour or more. For a large party, two water taxis are usually quicker and more comfortable than one.

Taxes and charges on a Venice trip

Apart from the jet itself, expect Air Passenger Duty when you leave Britain, Italy's per passenger levy on both the flight in and the flight out, and the lagoon city's own charges on hotel nights and on day visits.

UK duty
Air Passenger Duty on the flight out of Britain, Band A, for jets of 5.7 tonnes or more
Italian passenger tax
100 or 200 euros for every passenger on each flight into or out of Italy, depending on the distance
City tax
up to 5 euros a person a night in the historic centre, for a maximum of five nights
Access fee
5 or 10 euros for day visitors on set days in 2026, with hotel guests exempt

The Italian tax falls on private charters in aircraft of up to nineteen seats and is collected by the operator. It is measured on the great circle distance between the two airports plus 95 kilometres: up to 1,500 kilometres the rate is 100 euros a passenger, and beyond that 200 euros. Measured this way, every airport on our list in England and Wales except Newcastle, together with Jersey, stays inside the lower band, and Newcastle, the three Scottish airports, Belfast and Dublin fall into the upper one. The tax applies once passengers are on board, so a sector flown empty pays nothing, while an empty leg sold to you pays it like any charter.

Air Passenger Duty is charged only on the flight out of the UK. Italian destinations sit in Band A. Until the end of March 2027 the charge is 32 GBP for each passenger aboard a private jet weighing between 5.7 and 20 tonnes, rising to 142 GBP above 20 tonnes; from April 2027 there is a single rate of 146.63 GBP for all private jets of at least 5.7 tonnes. Jets below that weight are exempt, as are flights leaving the Channel Islands, and flights out of Scotland will be taxed by the Scottish government from April 2027. In Venice the tourist tax is 5 euros a night in a five star hotel in the historic centre in high season and 4.50 euros in a four star one, with children under ten exempt.

Treviso, the Lido and the other airports around Venice

Venice Marco Polo is the only airport in the lagoon for jets, but the region has several others that matter when the airport is full, when the aircraft has to wait or when the trip continues inland.

Venice Marco Polo, LIPZ. The main airport, with a 3,300 metre runway, a general aviation terminal and a private boat dock, open around the clock but with very limited parking.
Treviso, LIPH. About 30 kilometres north of Venice, run by AerTre, part of the SAVE group, with a runway of 2,420 metres and its own general aviation handling. Summer stands are just as hard to find as at Marco Polo, although the drive to Valdobbiadene or Cortina is shorter.
Venice Lido, LIPV. The historic airfield on the Lido, with a grass runway of 994 metres, suitable only for light propeller aircraft and not for jets.
Trieste, LIPQ. About an hour and a half to the east by road, an alternative when Venice and Treviso are full.
Verona, LIPX. About an hour and a quarter to the west, for Verona, Lake Garda and the Valpolicella, with quick turns only in summer.

Water taxi waiting for private passengers at Venice

Popular routes between the UK and Venice, and which way they run empty

Whatever the number of passengers, each fare covers the entire jet on a leg that is flying regardless, and the time shown is spent in the air. Venice is about 1,150 kilometres from London, easily within the range of a light jet, so our routes run from a Citation M2 on the Southampton and Jersey routes to a Challenger 350, a Legacy 500 or a Praetor 600 for larger groups. The Italian passenger tax is added for each passenger. The second list near the top shows what the same jet costs as a normal charter, for travellers whose dates are fixed.

Route In the air Empty leg from Season Which way it usually runs empty
Venice to London 2h 00m 6,300 GBP All year Home after a drop, because the jet cannot wait at Venice in summer
Farnborough to Venice 2h 00m 8,300 GBP September Out to collect guests at the end of the Film Festival
Venice to Biggin Hill 2h 00m 4,400 GBP All year Back to Britain after a long weekend drop
Oxford to Venice 2h 05m 5,000 GBP Summer Out to fetch a family after a week on the Lido
Venice to Southampton 2h 05m 3,600 GBP Easter Home after a family drop for the spring holidays
Bristol to Venice 2h 10m 5,000 GBP Summer Out to pick up a group from a villa on the Brenta
Venice to Birmingham 2h 10m 7,300 GBP May Returning after a drop for the opening of the Biennale
Manchester to Venice 2h 20m 8,400 GBP February Out to collect a party at the end of the Carnival
Venice to Leeds 2h 20m 5,500 GBP All year Home after a drop for a city break
Newcastle to Venice 2h 25m 7,600 GBP Summer Out on the eve of a Saturday collection
Venice to Edinburgh 2h 35m 10,500 GBP July Back north after taking a Scottish family on holiday
Glasgow to Venice 2h 40m 6,200 GBP Winter Out to bring skiers home from Cortina
Venice to Aberdeen 2h 40m 8,900 GBP All year Home after a drop for a wedding in a palazzo
Belfast to Venice 2h 40m 6,300 GBP Summer Out to collect guests from Lake Garda
Venice to Dublin 2h 35m 8,200 GBP Autumn Returning after a drop for the Biennale
Cardiff to Venice 2h 15m 4,900 GBP Summer Out to pick up a family from the Giudecca
Venice to Jersey 2h 00m 3,400 GBP All year Back to the island after a city break drop
Liverpool to Venice 2h 20m 5,400 GBP Autumn Out to collect a party after the Prosecco harvest

Sectors between Britain and Venice bunch on Thursdays and Fridays and on Sunday and Monday afternoons, when long weekends begin and end, and on Saturdays in summer. Because visiting jets have to leave soon after landing from May to September, flights from Venice to Britain are released most often and at the shortest notice.

Entering Italy at Venice: passports and customs

Coming from Britain, a private flight lands on the outer edge of the Schengen area, so Italian border police and customs deal with every passenger inside the general aviation terminal at Tessera.

  • Passport. Italian officers check that it is less than ten years old and that it remains valid three months past your planned exit from Schengen.
  • The 90 day rule. British visitors need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, but every day in Schengen counts, whether in Italy, Austria, France or elsewhere.
  • Entry/Exit System. At the Italian border British travellers are now enrolled in an electronic register instead of having their passports stamped, a change completed in April 2026; the officer takes your photograph and, if you are twelve or older, your fingerprints the first time you cross.
  • ETIAS. Not yet required. In July 2026 the launch of the EU travel authorisation was put back to 2027; it will cost 20 euros and be valid for three years.
  • Customs. Adults coming from Britain may carry 200 cigarettes duty free, together with four litres of still wine, sixteen of beer and one litre of spirits or two of sparkling or fortified wine, and up to 430 euros of other shopping. Carrying 10,000 euros or more in notes means filling in a declaration.
  • Food from home. The EU does not admit meat or dairy products from Britain, so sausages, bacon and cheese should not travel in the luggage.
  • Back to Britain. Returning on a private aircraft, an adult may land 200 cigarettes, 4 litres of spirits, 18 of wine and 42 of beer, plus 270 GBP worth of other purchases, without paying duty; sparkling wine joins the wine allowance, and cider the beer allowance, from 1 October 2026.

Three situations, three answers

A long weekend on the Grand Canal
Arrive on a Thursday, cross the lagoon to the hotel by water taxi, and leave again on the Sunday. From May to September the aircraft has to leave after the drop, which turns the trip into two separate flights, and either of them can often be matched with a released sector.
The opening of the Biennale
The preview days in early May fill hotels, water taxis and airport slots. Book the flight and the boat together, land early in the day, and look for empty legs out of Venice the day after the opening.
Skiing in Cortina
Fly to Venice or Treviso, drive about two hours to Cortina d'Ampezzo, and fly home from the same airport a week later. Neither airport keeps the jet for a week in the ski season, so it flies home and comes back for you, and both of those flights can appear as empty legs.

Flying to Venice with a dog or a cat

Italy asks for three things from a pet arriving from Britain: an implanted chip, a rabies shot given three weeks or more before departure, and a health certificate signed by an official veterinarian during the ten days before the flight lands. Owners resident in Britain can no longer use an EU pet passport; since April 2026 only the certificate is accepted. Italy does not ask for tapeworm treatment on the way in; tell the handler about the animal in advance so that the check at Marco Polo is arranged, and ask the water taxi and the hotel whether pets are welcome.

Dog in the cabin of a private jet to Venice

The flight home needs the most care. Only an operator holding British approval may fly a pet back into Britain, and dogs need a vet to give the tapeworm tablet within the window of one to five days before landing. Vets in Venice and Mestre know the procedure; book the appointment with the flight, and tell us about the pet at the outset so that we quote only operators that carry animals.

Private flights to Venice: your questions answered

Marco Polo, Treviso or the Lido?
Marco Polo at Tessera for the city, the lagoon islands and the Lido, because the private dock is beside the terminal. Treviso is the second choice, closer to the Prosecco hills and the road to the Dolomites. The Lido airfield takes no jets.
How long is the flight to Venice?
About 2h 00m from London, Biggin Hill, Farnborough and Jersey, 2h 05m to 2h 20m from Oxford, Southampton, Bristol, Birmingham, Cardiff, Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool, and 2h 25m to 2h 40m from Newcastle, Edinburgh, Dublin, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Belfast.
Can the aircraft wait for me in Venice?
Not in summer. From May to September visiting jets are normally allowed only a quick turn, so the aircraft leaves after the drop and comes back for the pickup, which is why Venice produces so many empty legs.
How do I get from the aircraft to my hotel?
A minivan takes you from the steps to the private terminal, the police check passports there, and the handler loads the bags into a water taxi waiting at the private dock. Half an hour later you are at the hotel's landing stage.
What does an empty leg to Venice cost?
The lowest fares in our table belong to the Citation M2: about 3,400 GBP for the whole jet from Venice to Jersey and about 3,600 GBP from Venice to Southampton. If you booked the same eighteen routes as normal charters for dates of your own, the bill would range from about 8,100 GBP to about 25,100 GBP.
How much is the Italian tax?
It depends on the distance. From London and most of England and Wales, and from Jersey, each passenger pays 100 euros per flight; from Newcastle, Scotland, Belfast or Dublin the figure doubles to 200 euros.
Is Venice airport open at night?
The runway and the tower are, but the private terminal keeps standard hours of 06:00 to 22:00, and staff must be booked in advance for anything later.
Do British visitors need a visa for Italy?
No visa is needed for a holiday or a business trip of up to 90 days in any 180 across Schengen, and ETIAS has not started yet.
And if nothing is released for my dates?
Let us know your dates, how many days they can move and how many are travelling. Between May and September every visiting jet has to leave Venice soon after landing, so a sector to or from Britain usually appears within days.

Call +44 7857 574938 , message the same number on WhatsApp , or write to flight@empty-leg.co.uk . Tell us the dates, the number of travellers, the luggage and your hotel or villa. We will reply with the sectors that fit and their charter prices, and arrange the handler, the permission, the water taxi and the Italian tax in one quote.
