Southampton is the airport for the Solent, and that is a more specific job than it sounds. The water between here and the Isle of Wight carries one of the largest sailing regattas in the world, the south coast yachting industry sits along its shore, and a good share of the private traffic through this field is going to a boat rather than to a building.
The airport itself is bigger than its reputation. It handles around twenty thousand aircraft movements a year, the runway was extended in 2023 and now runs to 1,887 metres, and the field sits at forty four feet above the sea, so nothing about performance is eroded by height.
The board below shows what our operator network has released on south coast routes. Be realistic about the volume: this is a smaller market than the London fields. Be equally realistic about the upside, because Jersey and Guernsey are thirty five minutes away and start at around 1,800 GBP for the whole aircraft.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.
Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up at Southampton.
Nothing is stored on this site. The button opens a chat with the message already written, and you send it yourself. We reply during office hours, 07:00 to 23:00, and check messages outside them too.
Three things move private aircraft in and out of the south coast, and the first of them floats. A fourth, the cruise port, has a section of its own, because it is the strongest single reason to use this airport.
Southampton is Britain's largest cruise port, handling over two million passengers a year. It is the home port for Cunard, including the transatlantic crossings to New York, and for most of the big British operators, across five terminals along the docks.

Here is the part worth doing the arithmetic on. Almost everyone flying in for a ship lands at Heathrow and then spends about ninety minutes in a car, or at Gatwick and spends closer to a hundred and ten. From this airport the cruise terminals are fifteen to twenty five minutes away. On a turnaround day, when embarkation runs to a fixed window and the ship does not wait, that difference is the whole argument for flying private into Southampton rather than into London and driving down.
The operational facts that decide whether an aircraft, a time and a route work at this field.
| Codes | SOU (IATA), EGHI (ICAO) |
| Location | Eastleigh in Hampshire, three and a half nautical miles north north east of central Southampton. Elevation 44 feet, which is as close to sea level as a British airport gets and means performance calculations here are generous |
| Runway | A single runway, 02/20, now 1,887 m of asphalt. The northern end was extended by 164 metres in 2023 at a cost of around fifteen million pounds, which took it from being too short for modern fleets to workable for most business aircraft. Before that work it was 1,723 m |
| Aircraft size | Light and midsize jets comfortably, and larger types with a performance review. The aircraft seen most often here in 2025 were the Legacy 600, the Phenom 300 and the Phenom 100. A long range departure at full fuel is not on |
| Operating hours | Broadly 06:30 to 22:00 on weekdays and Saturdays and 07:30 to 22:00 on Sundays, but the airport states plainly that it is not a twenty four hour field and that its hours vary with commercial demand, published through NOTAMs rather than fixed. We check the actual window for your date rather than quoting a timetable at you |
| Slots | Required, and shared with a scheduled operation. Prior permission for a private flight comes through the handler and ad hoc slots are requested from the national coordinator, both arranged by your operator. They only genuinely bind in the summer weeks |
| Access to the aircraft | Not by car. Private aircraft park on a stand the tower assigns, crew cross the apron in high visibility clothing and passengers have to be escorted, so the walk from the terminal to the aircraft is on foot. It is short, and it is worth knowing if mobility is a consideration |
| Customs and border control | On site at the private terminal. The general aviation report goes by email to the Border Force duty officer here, and it is specifically required for arrivals from the Channel Islands as well as from abroad, which catches people out on what feels like a domestic hop |
| Handling | Two handlers work the private traffic, one of them part of the largest FBO network in the world and based at a hangar at the northern end of the field. Fuel comes through a single supplier and is ordered via the handler rather than separately |
| Traffic | 885,266 passengers and 20,092 aircraft movements in 2025. Passengers up nearly four per cent on the year, movements down six per cent |
| Ownership and growth | Part of the same group as Aberdeen and Glasgow, sold in 2025 to an infrastructure investor for over one and a half billion pounds. A 350 million pound transformation programme across the three airports is under way, with design partners appointed. Planning permission caps passenger growth at three million a year, a figure not expected before 2033 |
There is a dedicated general aviation terminal away from the passenger building, with two handlers working it, one of them at a hangar at the northern end of the airfield. It is a working terminal rather than a showpiece, and at a field this size that is the right answer.
A quarter of an hour before a domestic departure and half an hour before an international one is plenty at a field this size. Which of the two handlers you use is decided by the operator on an empty leg, and it arrives in the flight brief with the address and the crew contact.

Southampton is mid market by British standards, and the lines that move a quote here are seasonal.
That last line is the quiet advantage of the south coast. An aircraft based at Farnborough reaches this field in under half an hour, so the positioning cost on a charter is a fraction of what it is from Scotland or the islands. It means charter prices here start closer to London ones than the map suggests, and it also means a sector out of Southampton is genuinely worth taking rather than a curiosity.
This is a crowded part of the country for airfields. Two of the neighbours will take a jet, and two will not but are worth knowing about anyway.
Almost nobody flying privately into Southampton is going to the middle of Southampton. These are typical off peak times by road.
| Destination | By car | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Southampton city centre | 15 to 25 min | Three and a half miles south down the A335 |
| The cruise terminals | 15 to 25 min | Five of them along the docks. Ninety minutes from Heathrow and a hundred and ten from Gatwick, for comparison |
| Hamble and the marinas | 15 to 25 min | Where a good share of the private traffic here is actually heading |
| Cowes, via the Red Jet | 50 to 75 min | Train or car to the terminal, then the fast ferry. Considerably longer during the regatta |
| Winchester | 20 to 30 min | North up the M3. Closer to the airport than the centre of Southampton in traffic |
| The New Forest | 30 to 50 min | West, and the reason a number of arrivals never see a boat or a city |
| Goodwood | 50 to 70 min | East along the coast, and much longer on a race or festival weekend |
The railway station is worth a line of its own. It sits on the airport, London is a little over an hour away and Southampton Central is under ten minutes, which makes this field unusually easy for a group arriving from several directions at once. The covered walkway leads to the passenger terminal rather than the private one, so allow a short hop by car between the two. For the island, a helicopter is arranged alongside the flight where the schedule will not tolerate a ferry.

A handful of routes produce sectors week after week while most produce nothing. These are the first kind, and the top of the list is unusually short: six of the first seven are under an hour.
| Destination | Flight time | Empty leg from | Peak | Which direction runs empty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jersey | 0h 35m | 1,800 GBP | April to October | Both, and constantly. Thirty five minutes across the Channel and among the cheapest sectors we place anywhere |
| Guernsey | 0h 35m | 1,800 GBP | April to October | Both. The same corridor and the same price, at slightly lower frequency |
| Bristol | 0h 35m | 1,800 GBP | All year | Both. Short enough that it is usually a positioning flight an operator would rather sell |
| London | 0h 40m | 2,600 GBP | All year, weekdays | Both, and rarely a trip in its own right. Aircraft shuttle between the two constantly |
| Cardiff | 0h 40m | 1,800 GBP | All year | Both. Quiet, cheap and easy to catch at short notice |
| Birmingham | 0h 50m | 2,600 GBP | All year | Both. Driven by the based fleets at the Midlands end rather than by demand here |
| Paris | 1h 00m | 2,600 GBP | All year, weekdays | Both. An hour to Le Bourget, and the shortest international corridor from this field |
| Manchester | 1h 05m | 2,600 GBP | All year | Both. Domestic business with a summer leisure overlay |
| Amsterdam | 1h 10m | 2,300 GBP | All year, weekdays | Both. Corporate day returns, released back south in the late afternoon |
| Dublin | 1h 20m | 2,200 GBP | All year | Both. No approved route needed for a dog either way, which makes it the easiest pet sector here |
| Edinburgh | 1h 25m | 3,100 GBP | All year | Both. A long domestic sector that flying genuinely shortens |
| Geneva | 1h 30m | 4,700 GBP | December to March | Back to Southampton. The bargain is the flight home from the Alps |
| Zurich | 1h 35m | 5,000 GBP | All year | Both. Banking traffic keeps it alive outside the ski season |
| Chambery | 1h 35m | 5,000 GBP | January to March | Back to Southampton, and it empties hard in the second half of March |
| Milan | 1h 45m | 4,200 GBP | All year | Both, with spikes around the design and fashion weeks |
| Nice | 1h 50m | 5,800 GBP | May to September | Back to Southampton in summer, outbound in the shoulder weeks |
| Cannes | 1h 50m | 4,700 GBP | May to September | Back to Southampton. Yacht and festival traffic rather than a steady corridor |
| Ibiza | 2h 10m | 7,000 GBP | June to September | Back to Southampton. Friday out and Sunday back are the expensive halves |
| Palma de Mallorca | 2h 10m | 6,800 GBP | June to September | Back to Southampton, with the best value in June and September |
| Faro | 2h 25m | 9,900 GBP | April to October | Both. Golf traffic keeps this running well outside the summer peak |
| Malaga | 2h 35m | 10,500 GBP | April to October | Both, and seven months of season rather than a summer |
There is no New York and no Dubai in that table. The runway is a good deal better than it was before the extension, but 1,887 metres will not launch a long range aircraft with the fuel a crossing needs, so an intercontinental trip starts at Farnborough, about an hour away, or at one of the London fields, which is closer to two. We will say so rather than plan a fuel stop you did not ask for.

If you want to see what your route would cost as a standard charter, so you have something to measure an empty leg against, use the calculator below. Fill in the airports, the dates and the number of passengers, add any preference on aircraft type, and we will send a written calculation by email or messenger. Please check your contact details carefully so that we can reply quickly.
The figure the calculator returns is an estimate for planning. The firm quote comes back from our consultants with the cost broken out line by line, and the price agreed there is the price written into the contract.

If you would rather skip the arithmetic, send us the route and the dates instead and a consultant will come back with both numbers, the charter price and any empty leg that fits.
The formalities are the same as at any British airport, with one local trap that catches people every summer.
The Solent runs the year here. From May to September the water is the reason people come, and the first fortnight of August is the peak of the English sailing season. Outside that window this is one of the quieter and cheaper airports in the south of England.
September, March, April and October are the months to aim for, with November cheapest of all. The fortnight to plan around is the end of July into the first week of August, when the racing and the regatta overlap. The days immediately after the regatta finishes are among the best of the year, because several hundred visitors have to leave at once.
Tell us your route - we'll respond within the hour.
Leaving, it is the country you land in that sets the requirements, and we handle those as part of the booking. Coming home is the harder half: an approved operator and an approved route are both needed, and only a handful of British airports may receive an animal arriving on a general aviation flight.

The exception here is a useful one. Movements between the mainland and the Channel Islands do not need an approved route, and those are the two busiest corridors from this field, so a dog going to Jersey or Guernsey is about as simple as it gets. From the continent it is different, and we check what applies to your particular routing before anything is committed rather than afterwards.
