Careers at Empty Leg UK

We are an air charter broker based in the business aviation area of London Luton Airport. Most of what we do is sourcing repositioning sectors, the flights operators need to fill because the aircraft is moving anyway, and placing British clients on them. It is a specific skill, it runs at the pace of the operator schedules rather than office hours, and the people who are good at it tend to have come from broking rather than from travel.

We hire when we find the right person rather than to fill a headcount. If you work in this market and you are curious, write to us even when nothing below matches exactly.

What we look for in a broker

Everything below is a nice to have except the first two lines, which are not.

Working knowledge of Avinode
You can search the marketplace properly, read an operator's availability rather than take the first quote returned, raise and chase RFQs, and spot a repositioning sector before it is published anywhere. If you have also worked with SchedAero or Paynode, say so.
Real experience sourcing empty legs
You understand why a sector exists, which direction it will run in at which time of year, and how to ask a scheduler for a movement that has not been listed. You know that the discount is set by the operator's need, not by the distance.
Relationships with operators
People who answer your message at seven in the evening because they know you will not waste their time. This matters more in empty legs than in any other part of broking.
Judgement about aircraft
Range against the sector, cabin against the group, hold against the skis, runway performance against the field. Enough to catch the quote that looks cheap and will not work.
The UK ground picture
Farnborough, Luton, Biggin Hill, Northolt, London City and Stansted are not interchangeable. Slots, night restrictions, handling agents and customs all bite differently, and clients notice when you know.
Honesty under pressure
Telling a client their route rarely produces empty legs, or that business class will be cheaper for two people, is how we keep them. If that instinct feels like a lost sale to you, this is the wrong desk.

Current vacancies

1. Charter broker, empty legs desk

The core role. You handle enquiries from first message to landing, source sectors across the operator market, quote, contract and stay with the client through the flight.

What you will be doing

  • Sourcing empty leg and one way sectors through Avinode and direct operator contact, including movements that never reach a public list;
  • Quoting standard charter alongside every empty leg, so the client can see both prices;
  • Building and holding your own client accounts rather than passing them on;
  • Preparing contracts with the operations and finance side of the business;
  • Arranging slots, handling, catering, ground transport and border formalities around the flight;
  • Watching your flights through to arrival, including weather, crew hours and schedule changes;
  • Keeping the CRM accurate enough that a colleague could pick up your booking cold.

What we are looking for

  • At least three years broking charter, or five years in a VIP or premium service role with genuine aviation exposure;
  • Confident daily use of Avinode;
  • Demonstrable experience finding and selling empty leg sectors;
  • Fluent written and spoken English; a second language is useful, particularly German, French or Russian;
  • The judgement to negotiate with a scheduler and the patience to explain a cancellation clause to a client;
  • Comfortable with a rota that includes evenings and weekends, because the market does not keep office hours;
  • The right to work in the United Kingdom.

2. Junior broker and broker's assistant

For someone with a year or two in aviation, travel or premium sales who wants to learn broking properly rather than answer a switchboard.

What you will be doing

  • Supporting the brokers on live bookings, from quote preparation to flight briefs;
  • Running searches in Avinode and shortlisting aircraft for a broker to check;
  • Preparing contracts, invoices and passenger documentation;
  • Chasing handling agents, catering and transfers;
  • Keeping the empty leg schedule on the website current.

What we are looking for

  • Excellent written English and a careful eye for detail, because a wrong passport number stops a flight;
  • Organised enough to hold six things in the air at once;
  • Interest in aviation that predates the job application;
  • Any exposure to Avinode, an operator or an FBO is an advantage rather than a requirement;
  • The right to work in the United Kingdom.

3. Client development executive

Working the phone and the inbox to turn enquiries into conversations, and dormant accounts into flights. No cold calling from bought lists.

What you will be doing

  • Handling inbound enquiries by phone, email and WhatsApp;
  • Following up with clients who have flown with us before;
  • Understanding what a caller actually needs and passing a properly briefed lead to a broker;
  • Sending presentations and aircraft information;
  • Maintaining the CRM to the same standard as the brokers.

What we are looking for

  • At least a year in telephone sales, client service or account management, ideally in a premium market;
  • Clear, natural English on the phone and in writing;
  • Persistence without pestering, and the sense to know the difference;
  • Basic grasp of aircraft classes, or the appetite to learn it quickly;
  • The right to work in the United Kingdom.

4. Business analyst

Part time or full time. We run our own empty leg feed, pricing tools and website, and we want them to be better than the ones our competitors licence.

What you will be doing

  • Mapping how our brokers actually work, then removing the steps that waste their time;
  • Specifying changes to the feed, the pricing tools and the website clearly enough for a developer to build them;
  • Working with data from Avinode and from our own bookings to find patterns worth acting on;
  • Testing what gets built and holding it to what was agreed.

What we are looking for

  • Experience as an analyst in aviation, travel or a comparable marketplace business;
  • Able to get a straight answer out of a busy person who does not want to be interviewed;
  • Writes plainly, without jargon;
  • Comfortable with spreadsheets and with reading an API specification;
  • Aviation knowledge is a strong advantage.

A note on cabin crew applications

We receive a steady stream of CVs from flight attendants, and we are sorry to turn them away. We are a broker: we do not hold an Air Operator Certificate, we do not own aircraft and we do not employ crew. Cabin crew are engaged by the operators who fly the aircraft, and those are the companies to approach. If you write to us anyway we will point you towards the operators we work with most, but we cannot offer you a position ourselves.

Private jet flight cost calculator

What we offer

  • A desk in the business aviation area at London Luton, not a call centre floor;
  • Salary reviewed against the market, plus commission on what you close;
  • Your own accounts and the authority to run them;
  • A small enough team that a good idea reaches the founder the same week;
  • Paid lunches and private medical cover;
  • Training on the systems and the market, including Avinode, for anyone joining at junior level.

How to apply

Send your CV to hr@empty-leg.co.uk, naming the role in the subject line. A covering note is worth more to us than a formal letter: tell us what you have worked on, which systems you use daily, and one flight you are proud of arranging.

We read everything and reply to every application, including the ones we turn down. If your experience fits we will arrange a first conversation within a week of your application.

Please do not send us client data. We are interested in your track record, your judgement and the relationships you have built, and not in lists, databases or documents belonging to a current or former employer. Anything of that kind will be deleted unread.

Empty Leg UK is an equal opportunities employer. We consider every application on merit and we welcome candidates from every background. If you need an adjustment at any stage of the process, tell us and we will arrange it.

CVs and covering notes are held only for as long as we are considering your application and for a reasonable period afterwards in case a suitable role appears. You can ask us to delete them at any time by writing to privacy@empty-leg.co.uk. Our privacy policy explains how we handle personal information.
