Empty leg flights from London City Airport

London City is the airport closest to the City and Canary Wharf, three miles from the Wharf and about six from the City. Nothing else comes close on the ground: a car reaches the Wharf in a quarter of an hour and the Docklands Light Railway runs from a station at the terminal door.

What you give up for that is choice. The runway is short, the approach is the steepest in the country, and both the aircraft and the crew need specific certification to fly it. That narrows the fleet considerably, and it is the reason repositioning sectors are scarcer here than at most London fields.

The board below shows what has been released across our operator network. Because the eligible fleet here is small, it is worth telling us your route even when nothing is listed, since we can look at aircraft that are certified for this approach and see where they are going next.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.

Set up an alert for London City

Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up at London City.

Please fill in both the departure and the arrival city.

Nothing is stored on this site. The button opens a chat with the message already written, and you send it yourself. We reply during office hours, 07:00 to 23:00, and check messages outside them too.

Why sectors here are scarce

At most London fields, a repositioning flight can go to whichever field suits the operator. Here it cannot, and the reasons compound. Parking is also tight and expensive, so aircraft drop their passengers and leave rather than waiting, which is why what does appear here is mostly outbound and usually gone quickly.

The aircraft has to qualify
Every fixed wing aircraft here must be a multi engine type certified for a five and a half degree approach. That is a minority of the business jet fleet, and no single engine aircraft qualifies at all.
The crew has to qualify too
Certification covers the pilots as well as the type. An operator may own an eligible aircraft and still be unable to send it here today, because the crew on duty is not current for the approach.
The operator has to be approved as well
The airport runs its own application process for every aircraft that wants to use its private jet centre, with the paperwork reviewed before approval is granted. So there are three filters, not one: the type, the crew and the operator.

The practical consequence. Outbound sectors from London City appear more often than inbound ones, because an aircraft that has just delivered someone here has to go somewhere and would rather carry you than nobody.

If you are flying out of London and can reach the Royal Docks easily, this is a corridor worth watching. If you are flying back into London, tell us you would also accept Biggin Hill, the usual alternative for the City and the Wharf, and your options multiply.

The corridors that run from here

London City lives on the financial districts to its west, so the route map looks like a list of European financial centres with one holiday exception.

Corridor Flight time When it runs Why it matters
Zurich 1h 35m Year round, weekdays The signature London City route. Banking traffic in both directions, and one of the few Alpine corridors that does not empty out in summer
Paris Le Bourget 1h 05m Year round, weekdays Short enough that the ground time at either end matters more than the flight, which is precisely the case for using this airport
Amsterdam 1h 05m Year round, weekdays Day returns for meetings, and the sector most often released back to London in the late afternoon
Geneva 1h 35m Year round, peaking in winter Family offices and private banks travel this route all year, and the ski season adds a second layer on top
Milan 1h 50m Year round Finance rather than fashion drives most of it from this airport, which keeps it steady through the year
Dublin 1h 15m Year round A short sector with a large financial services community at the far end, and one that often runs on a Monday out and a Thursday back
Nice 1h 55m May to September The main leisure route here, and the weekend closure is what limits it rather than the aircraft

One more constraint worth knowing on any longer sector. Because the take off run is short, it limits how much fuel and payload an aircraft can carry, and on a warm day the margin shrinks further. It rarely affects a normal European trip, but it is worth mentioning before someone adds four passengers at the last minute.

Private jet flight cost calculator

Transatlantic flights are possible here but uncommon. Several long range types are approved for London City, the Falcon 7X and 8X among them, and Dassault quotes the 7X as able to reach New York nonstop from here with eight passengers. Most transatlantic trips still use Stansted, Luton or Farnborough, where the choice of aircraft is far wider and the take off run does not limit the load.

One thing worth knowing about timing. A repositioning sector usually comes with a window rather than an hour. The operator gives a day or two, and the departure firms up only once the paying charter behind it is settled.

At London City there is less room for a window to move, because the airport closes for a full day at the weekend. A Saturday sector that slips by a few hours can slip by a whole day.

Codes LCY (IATA), EGLC (ICAO)
Location Royal Docks in the London Borough of Newham, east of Canary Wharf and the City. Three miles from Canary Wharf and about six from the City
Runway A single runway 09/27, 1,508 m long, with a declared take off run of 1,199 m. Short by any measure, and the reason payload and fuel are planned carefully on every departure
Approach A mandatory glidepath of five and a half degrees, the steepest in the United Kingdom, against a standard of three. Both aircraft and crew require specific approval
Eligible aircraft Multi engine fixed wing types with steep approach certification. The approved list runs from the Citation CJ family, the Phenom 300 and the Pilatus PC-24 through the Citation XLS, Latitude and Challenger 350 to the Falcon 7X and 8X, the Gulfstream G650 and the Global 5500, 6000, 6500 and 7500. Single engine aircraft are not permitted. Approval is specific to the aircraft and the operator, so it is confirmed for every booking rather than assumed
Operating hours The airfield is open from 06:30 to 22:00 Monday to Friday, 06:30 to 12:30 on Saturday, 12:30 to 22:00 on Sunday and 09:00 to 22:00 on public holidays. Between Saturday lunchtime and Sunday lunchtime nothing moves for twenty four hours
Weather limits Category I operations only, with no low visibility capability, so thick fog can close the airport. That matters in a British winter
Slots Required, and shared with a busy scheduled operation, so peak hour slots are a constraint as well as the aircraft
Handling Mandatory for every visiting aircraft, and provided by the airport's own private jet centre
Private terminal A dedicated private jet centre with its own entrance, separate from the airline terminal

The approach, and what it means for you

The glidepath into London City is almost twice as steep as a normal one. That is not a safety concern but a design response to the buildings around the Royal Docks, and the crews flying it have trained specifically for it. The approach and the airport's weather limits have consequences worth knowing about before you book, and there are four of them.

Your aircraft choice is made for you. We are not picking the nicest cabin on the market; we are picking from the aircraft that may legally land here on your date with a current crew.
The descent feels different. Noticeably steeper on the way in, and passengers who fly regularly usually comment on it the first time. It is normal here and nothing is wrong.
Fog closes the airport. With no low visibility capability, a foggy morning can shut the field entirely. Between November and February that is a genuine planning factor rather than a theoretical one.
Plan the alternative in advance. We agree the diversion airport with you when we book, usually Biggin Hill or Luton, so that a change of airport does not become a change of plan.

What the terminal is actually like

The private jet centre has its own entrance and no connection to the airline terminal. You will not see a queue, a departure board or a retail unit, and nobody from a scheduled flight passes through it.

ARRIVING
A separate entrance entirely
The car pulls up at the private jet centre rather than at the terminal forecourt, and the car park sits directly outside arrivals. From there it is a short walk through the centre to the aircraft, with no queue and no shared security hall on the way.
BAGGAGE
Modest, and worth planning
Bags go from the car to the hold as they do everywhere, but many of the aircraft that fly here are light jets with modest holds. Skis and golf bags need confirming against the specific aircraft rather than being assumed. Security screening follows the national rules, which depend on the size of the aircraft and how the flight is operated, and we confirm what applies when we book.
FORMALITIES
Met at the aircraft
You are met at the aircraft and walked through customs and immigration, which Border Force carries out on site at the jet centre for every international arrival. Passenger documentation still goes in with the booking, and with it in order the whole thing takes minutes.
WAITING
Built for working, not lingering
A VIP lounge open to every private and charter passenger, private meeting rooms that can be requested during opening hours, and showers. There are two separate crew lounges with quiet zones, so crew and passengers are not sharing a room.
ON BOARD
Catering through the jet centre
Ordered from the centre's catering partner, with laundry and storage also available on site. On a sector of an hour most people take coffee and something cold rather than a meal, which suits the aircraft size here.
LEAVING
Car, taxi or train
A chauffeured car or a black cab can be booked through the centre, your own car can wait in the car park outside arrivals, and the Docklands Light Railway station is at the airport. For the City at rush hour, the train is often the quickest of the three.

The jet centre advertises ninety second departure and arrival checks. That is a marketing line rather than a stopwatch, but the underlying claim is fair: fifteen to twenty minutes before a domestic departure and twenty to thirty before an international one is ample here. What is different is the other end of the journey, where wheels down to a desk in Canary Wharf can be under half an hour.

What the ground costs

London City is not a cheap airport and nobody pretends otherwise. Space in the Royal Docks is finite, the airport shares its infrastructure with a busy scheduled operation, and both of those show up in the handling.

Premium handling
space in the Docks is scarce, and the handling is priced accordingly
Short stays only
parking is limited and expensive, so aircraft rarely wait here
Slots matter
shared with the airlines, so peak hours are the constraint
What you save
an hour of London traffic, at both ends of the day

The arithmetic is unusual here and worth stating plainly. On most London fields the ground charges are a rounding error against the aircraft. At London City they are not, but neither is the time saved. For a day return from Canary Wharf the airport frequently wins anyway, and for a leisure trip with luggage it rarely does.

Getting into London

This is the whole point of the airport, and it delivers. These are typical off peak times.

Destination By car Fastest alternative
Canary Wharf 15 to 25 min The DLR with one change, about twenty minutes and immune to traffic
The City 25 to 45 min The DLR to Bank, around twenty minutes
Mayfair and the West End 45 to 70 min Rail is competitive at rush hour, and Northolt beats it altogether
Greenwich and south east London 20 to 35 min Comfortable by road in either direction
Stratford and east London 15 to 30 min The DLR with a change at Canning Town, and no other airport is closer on this side of the city
West London and the Thames Valley 70 to 110 min The wrong airport entirely. Use Northolt or Farnborough

The railway station sits at the terminal itself and is walkable from the jet centre, which is not true of Stansted, where the station is a short drive from the business centre. For a single passenger with hand luggage heading to the City, the train is often quicker than a car during the working day, and it is never held up by traffic.

When the airport is shut

Two closures shape everything about planning a trip here, and the second of them can arrive with little warning.

The weekend. The airfield closes at 12:30 on Saturday and reopens at 12:30 on Sunday, so nothing moves for twenty four hours in between. The closure is part of the airport's planning permission, and a government decision in 2024 turned down a request to extend Saturday hours, so it should be treated as fixed. A Saturday afternoon departure or a Sunday morning arrival does not happen here.

The weather. The airport is not equipped for low visibility operations, so thick fog can close it. On a foggy winter morning that can happen with little warning, and flights divert. We plan the alternate with you in advance rather than leaving it to the day.

Neither closure is a reason to avoid the airport. They are a reason to treat it as a weekday tool for short European sectors, which is exactly what it was built to be.

Empty leg calendar for London City, month by month

London City runs on the working week rather than the holiday calendar, and it is the London field where a fortnight in August is easier to fly from than a Tuesday in September.

Airport activity
How busy the field is, which decides slot availability and what a charter costs.
Empty legs
How many repositioning sectors reach the market, and how deep the discounts run.

January
BusyThin
Business travel restarts after the holidays and Zurich and Geneva run hard. Fog is also at its most likely, so build a diversion into any plan that cannot move.
February
BusyThin
Results season keeps the financial corridors full. Sectors that appear are almost always outbound in the early evening.
March
Very busyThin
The end of the financial year for many companies and the heaviest corporate month here. Both peak hour slots and eligible aircraft are scarce.
April
SteadyFair
Easter thins the working week and the fog risk has largely passed. The most comfortable month of the year to fly from here.
May
BusyFair
Two bank holidays break the month up, and the Riviera starts pulling eligible aircraft south at the weekends.
June
BusyFair
The City is at its most active before the summer break, and the Nice corridor opens properly. Midweek is where both meet.
July
SteadyFair
Corporate travel starts to wind down while leisure demand goes elsewhere, so the field is easier than the rest of London in high summer.
August
QuietGood
The financial districts empty and so does the airport. Slots are available, prices soften and this is the easiest month of the year to fly from London City.
September
Very busyThin
Everyone returns at once and the working week is solid. Book a charter rather than waiting for a sector that will not appear.
October
BusyFair
Still a heavy corporate month, but the wider market is repositioning after the summer, so more eligible aircraft pass through than in September.
November
SteadyFair
Quieter on the ground, but the fog season begins. Give yourself a margin on anything you cannot afford to miss at the far end.
December
BusyThin
A compressed fortnight of business travel and then almost nothing. Between the holidays and the weekend closure, late December is the hardest stretch of the year to find a sector here.

August and April are the months to aim for, which is close to the reverse of the pattern at the holiday airports around London. If your trip falls in March or September, book a charter early rather than waiting for a sector, because the aircraft that qualify for this approach are working somewhere else.

Three situations, three answers

Zurich and back inside a working day
Precisely what this airport exists for. Out of Canary Wharf at eight, in the air by nine, and back at your desk before the evening if the meeting runs to time.
A family and skis, leaving on a Saturday
Not here, and the reason is the calendar rather than the aircraft. The field closes at 12:30 on Saturday, which leaves little margin if anything runs late. Biggin Hill or Luton, and the baggage will thank you as well.
Arriving from New York
Most transatlantic aircraft land at Stansted or Luton, and you come in by car. If the aircraft is one of the few long range types approved here, it can land at London City directly, but that narrows the choice of aircraft considerably.

Travelling with a dog or a cat

For a pet arriving from abroad, London City is not an option. It is not among the airports approved for dogs and cats entering the country on a private or charter flight, so a dog returning from France, Switzerland or Spain must land at an approved airport such as Luton, Farnborough, Biggin Hill or Stansted.

For travel within the British Isles and for departures the position is different and depends on the operator's own policy, which we check before quoting. If you are travelling with an animal, say so at the enquiry stage and we will steer you to the right airport rather than the nearest one.

The six London business aviation airports

They are not interchangeable. What decides the right one is usually the time from wheels down to your front door, not the length of the runway or the name on the terminal. On an empty leg the airport comes with the sector, so this is most useful when you are choosing a charter or deciding which routes to watch.

Farnborough
FAB / EGLF
Hours Closed overnight
Runway 2,440 m
Into London 45 to 75 min

Business aviation only and the best terminal in Europe. PPR required. The default for west and south west London, Surrey and Hampshire.

London Luton
LTN / EGGW
Hours 24h airport, night limits
Runway 2,162 m
Into London 45 to 60 min

The widest choice of sectors and two competing FBOs, with no PPR. The airport runs around the clock, but business aviation night movements are restricted and in recent summers have been withdrawn between June and September.

London Biggin Hill
BQH / EGKB
Hours Closed overnight
Runway About 1,800 m
Into London 40 to 70 min to the City

South east London, Kent and Canary Wharf. Helicopter shuttle to Battersea in minutes, and a point of entry for pets on private aircraft.

London Stansted
STN / EGSS
Hours 24h airport, night limits
Runway 3,049 m
Into London 60 to 75 min

The longest runway of the London fields, ramp space when Luton is full, and the home of VIP airliners. Open around the clock, but business aviation night slots are capped and are being reduced.

RAF Northolt
NHT / EGWU
Hours Long day, not 24 hours
Runway 1,684 m
Into London 35 to 50 min to Park Lane

The shortest drive to Mayfair of any London field. Civil movements are capped and booked well in advance, so availability decides rather than price.

London City
you are here
LCY / EGLC
Hours Closes in the evening
Runway 1,508 m, steep approach
Into London 15 to 25 min to Canary Wharf

The only private jet centre inside London. Restricted to certified types flown by specifically approved crews.

Drive times are typical off peak figures and move considerably in the Friday evening peak. Where the road is the problem, a helicopter transfer from Biggin Hill, Luton or Stansted reaches central London in well under half an hour. No London field offers unrestricted business aviation access through the night, so a departure after 23:00 needs planning rather than assuming.

Questions about flying from London City

Why can only some aircraft land here?
Because of the approach. The glidepath is five and a half degrees where three is standard, and both the aircraft type and the pilots need specific approval to fly it. Add a declared take off run of just 1,199 metres and the eligible fleet is a fraction of the market.
Can I fly at the weekend?
Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon, yes. In between, the airport is shut for twenty four hours, and that closure should be treated as fixed rather than negotiable. For a weekend trip, plan around it from the start.
What happens if it is foggy?
The airport is not equipped for low visibility operations, so thick fog can close it. Flights divert, usually to Biggin Hill or Luton. We agree the alternate with you when we book rather than improvising on the morning.
Is the steep approach safe?
Yes. It is a designed procedure flown by crews trained and checked specifically for this approach, on certified aircraft. It feels steeper than you are used to and that is the only thing about it you will notice.
Why are there so few empty legs?
Because repositioning aircraft can go anywhere, and only a minority of them can come here. Add limited parking, the weekend closure and shared slots, and the supply is thin. Outbound sectors are more common than inbound ones.
Is it really faster than the other airports?
For the City, Canary Wharf and east London, comfortably. For Mayfair it is beaten by Northolt, and for anywhere west of the centre it is the wrong choice. The right airport depends on where in London you are going rather than on which field looks closest.
