Empty leg flights to and from Faro

Faro is the airport for the whole Algarve, from the golf estates of Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo twenty minutes down the road to Vilamoura, Albufeira, Carvoeiro and the wilder western coast around Lagos. Few airports in southern Europe are as British: in 2025, its first year above ten million passengers, travellers flying to or from the United Kingdom made up 46 per cent of all traffic, and London Gatwick was its busiest single route the year before.

Private flying follows the same British rhythm: second homes on the golf estates, golf breaks of three or four nights in spring and autumn, and villa holidays in every school break. Two airport rules shape the empty leg market more than anything else. A visiting aircraft may not normally stay longer than 72 hours, and nothing may land or take off between midnight and six in the morning. The first turns almost every trip longer than a long weekend into two positioning sectors; the second decides how late an evening flight from Britain can leave.

Empty legs to and from Faro right now

The board lists every sector our operators have released into or out of Faro. When Faro itself has nothing, the board falls back to the rest of southern Portugal and to Seville: Portimão near the western Algarve, Beja inland, Lisbon and Cascais further north, and Seville two hours east across the Spanish border. Beneath the board, the price list compares each regular route with a full charter of the same aircraft.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.

Set up an alert for Faro

Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up between the UK and Faro.

Please fill in both the departure and the arrival city.

Nothing is stored on this site. The button opens a chat with the message already written, and you send it yourself. We reply during office hours, 07:00 to 23:00, and check messages outside them too.

Where Faro sectors come from

Faro's empty legs grow out of three habits of the British Algarve trade, and unlike most holiday airports in the Mediterranean it has some in almost every month.

The 72 hour rule
Faro lets a visiting aircraft stay no longer than 72 hours unless the airport agrees otherwise, so a family flying out for a week, or golfers staying five nights, cannot keep their jet waiting for them. Instead the jet leaves as soon as its passengers are off and returns later to collect them, and both of those journeys are made with nobody on board. A long weekend of three nights is the only common pattern that lets the aircraft stay.
Golf in spring and autumn
The Algarve is one of Europe's great golf regions, with the courses of Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, Vilamoura and Monte Rei all within an hour of the runway. Golfing groups fly out for three or four nights from February to May and again from September to November, often leaving on a Thursday, and every trip that runs past the 72 hour limit releases sectors in both directions.
Villas and the school calendar
Many British families own houses on the golf estates and along the coast, and they fly out at every half term, at Easter, for the summer and at Christmas. At the start of each holiday aircraft deliver families and fly home empty; at the end they fly out empty to bring them back. Because the Algarve is busy in almost every school holiday, those waves come round several times a year.

London to Faro takes roughly two hours forty minutes in the air, comfortably inside the range of even a light jet. Popular choices run from the Phenom 300 and the Citation XLS for smaller parties to the thirteen seat Legacy 600 for groups. Our route table is priced on the Praetor 600, a super midsize jet usually fitted with eight or nine seats and with room for a set of golf bags each, so a smaller jet on the same route will usually cost less, and a Legacy 600 for a group of twelve somewhat more.

Seasonal demand for repositioning flights

Faro Airport in detail

Faro is an airline airport first: more than ten million passengers a year pass through a single terminal, and private flights share its apron, its runway and, unless a separate service is booked, its passport desks.

Codes and name FAO (IATA), LPFR (ICAO). Officially Faro Gago Coutinho International Airport since 2022, a hundred years after the navigator Gago Coutinho and the pilot Sacadura Cabral made the first aerial crossing of the South Atlantic. The airport opened in July 1965 and is run by ANA Aeroportos de Portugal, part of VINCI Airports.
Location Four kilometres west of the centre of Faro, on the edge of the Ria Formosa lagoon and seven metres above sea level. Quinta do Lago is about twenty minutes away by car and Vilamoura about thirty.
Runway A single runway, 10/28, 2,490 metres long and 45 metres wide, long enough for every business jet from a Citation Mustang to a Global or a private Boeing.
Hours Open from 06:00 until midnight local time. Portuguese law forbids landings and departures on the mainland between midnight and 06:00, and Faro, unlike Lisbon and Porto, has no exception regime, so only emergencies, weather diversions and similar cases may use it at night. Slots are issued between 06:05 and 23:55.
Slots Faro is slot coordinated during the IATA summer season, from late March to late October, and every flight then needs a slot; in winter a simpler schedule clearance takes its place. Requests for private flights are accepted no earlier than ten days before arrival, so the airport time for a summer weekend is confirmed only in the last ten days.
Parking Aircraft not based at Faro may not park for more than 72 hours without the airport's agreement, and larger jets that need to stay longer require prior permission from airport operations. Business aircraft are placed by preference on six stands numbered between 201 and 211, overnight parking was tight in summer 2026, and there is no hangar space for visiting aircraft.
Handling Compulsory. Every private or business aircraft must be assisted by a ground handler, which also books the slot and escorts passengers through the terminal.
Fuel and fire cover Jet A1 through a hydrant system from 05:30 to midnight, and fire and rescue category 8, which covers the largest business jets. There is no fire cover between midnight and 06:00, another reason nothing flies at night.
Traffic A record 10.4 million passengers and 67,510 commercial aircraft movements in 2025. The United Kingdom supplied 46 per cent of the traffic, and London Gatwick, Dublin and Manchester were the busiest routes in 2024. About 6.2 million passengers used the airport in the first seven months of 2026, 3.8 per cent more than a year earlier.

Three rows matter more than the rest: the 72 hour limit, the night closure and the ten day slot window. Together they explain why so many aircraft arrive and leave empty at Faro, and why the time of the flight home deserves as much thought as the flight out.

Where private passengers are handled at Faro

Faro has no separate private terminal building yet. Private passengers wait in the lounge of the company handling their flight and are escorted through security and passport control in the main terminal, normally alongside the airline traffic. Since late July 2026 the airport operator has also been selling a paid service with lanes of its own.

ExecuJet
The ExecuJet operation at Faro was formerly Sky Valet and joined the ExecuJet network when its parent, the Luxaviation group, bought the Sky Valet chain in 2024. It offers a private VIP lounge in a Mediterranean style, a separate pilot lounge and flight planning room, meeting rooms, work stations, a kitchen, an art gallery and rest areas with showers. The standard hours are 07:30 to 22:00, extended to the whole airport day on request, and Hertz and Enterprise both have hire cars on site.
Omni Handling
Omni is Portugal's largest business aviation handler, with more than half of the national market by its own account. Its Faro lounge opened in October 2020: 150 square metres on the landside, with a passenger lounge, a crew rest area, a full kitchen, a private bedroom with its own bathroom, an outdoor terrace and a TrackMan golf simulator that doubles as a cinema.
Other handlers
Wexjet Aviation, a Portuguese handler present at a dozen airports around the country, also works at Faro, and international flight support companies arrange handling there for their operators. Whichever company is chosen, the passenger's route through the airport is the same.
ANA CIPSTAR
Since 25 July 2026 ANA has offered its CIPSTAR service at Faro to passengers of private aircraft, with dedicated facilities and separate lanes for security and passport control, at 380 euros a passenger including VAT until the end of 2026. A full VIP terminal is planned, but no opening date has been announced.

For a passenger the choice of handler matters less than the time of day. Outside the summer peak the whole process takes minutes; on a July morning, the queue at the border can be longer than the walk to the aircraft.

The terminal from a passenger's side

Faro works differently from airports with a private building of their own, and it helps to know the sequence before the day. This is how a departure and an arrival run.

MEETING POINT
Agreed with the handler
There is no private terminal to drive to, so the meeting point is set by the company handling the flight, usually its own lounge. Tell your driver which company that is, because ExecuJet and Omni use different rooms, and give the handler the driver's details so that someone is waiting when you pull up.
WHEN TO ARRIVE
Allow more in summer
Handlers put the departure process, from the lounge to the aircraft, at around ten minutes when the airport is quiet. In summer, allow more: unless CIPSTAR is booked, the border desks are shared with airline passengers, and the longest waits usually come between about 09:00 and 13:00. Forty five minutes before a July or August morning departure is sensible; half an hour is ample the rest of the year.
CHECK IN
Your name is on the list
Your names are on the list the operator sent to the handler, so there is no check in counter. A member of the handler's staff meets you, checks the passports against the list and stays with you until you board.
BAGGAGE
It stays with you
Portuguese rules require private passengers to accompany their luggage through security and customs, so the bags do not vanish at the kerb as they do at some private terminals. The handler's staff carry them and escort you, and the bags are loaded at the aircraft. Golf bags are routine here, but tell us how many when you ask for a price.
SECURITY
In the main building
Passengers and bags are screened in the main terminal, with the handler's escort taking you through. On a busy morning this is where a few extra minutes can go.
PASSPORTS
The border check
Flights between Faro and Britain cross the Schengen border, so passports are checked in both directions. Your first crossing under the Entry/Exit System is recorded with a photograph, plus fingerprints for anyone aged twelve or over, and later trips are checked against that record. In summer this desk is the one most likely to keep you waiting, which is what the paid CIPSTAR lanes are for.
TO THE AIRCRAFT
Out to the business stands
Business aircraft park on the stands set aside for them, and the handler takes you out to the aircraft once security and the border are done. Crews are usually through in five to ten minutes, so the aircraft is ready by the time you reach it.
ON ARRIVAL
About ten minutes
The sequence runs in reverse: the handler meets the aircraft, walks you and your bags through passport control and customs, and hands you over to your driver. When the border desk is quiet, handlers quote around ten minutes from the aircraft to the exit.
CAR TO THE AIRCRAFT
Not the usual routine
A car at the aircraft steps is not the routine at Faro. Passengers flying to or from Britain clear the border inside the terminal, and the handler runs them between the terminal and the aircraft in an executive van in both directions. Arriving passengers then leave through the terminal's arrivals exit, so agree in advance exactly where the driver will wait.
LOUNGES
Two handlers, two styles
ExecuJet's rooms follow the classic pattern: a VIP lounge decorated in a Mediterranean style, a separate lounge for pilots, meeting rooms, work stations with fast internet, a bar, television and an art gallery. Omni's lounge is newer and feels more like a small private house, with a terrace, a kitchen, a bedroom with its own bathroom and contemporary African art chosen by the Movart gallery.
GOLF SIMULATOR
One more round
Omni's lounge has a TrackMan golf simulator on which a waiting golfer can play a virtual round of famous courses, and the same room converts into a cinema with a large screen. It opened just as Formula 1 came to Portimão in 2020, and it suits a golfing party waiting for the aircraft rather well.
FOOD AND DRINK
Snacks in the lounge, lunch on board
Neither lounge is a restaurant. ExecuJet offers a bar, gourmet coffee, freshly baked biscuits, popcorn and newspapers, and Omni's FBO has a fully equipped kitchen, but anything more substantial is ordered through the handler as catering, either for the lounge or for the flight. In summer give at least a day's notice for a full meal.
CREW
Showers and a bedroom
ExecuJet has rest areas with showers and Omni a crew room and a private bedroom, which makes a same day return practical for a crew that arrives in the morning and flies home in the evening. The evening flight still has to leave before midnight.
MOBILITY
Tell us before booking
Handlers at Faro advise that the airport offers no service for private passengers who cannot manage the aircraft steps even with help, so anyone with limited mobility should tell us before we choose the aircraft. Wheelchair help inside the terminal can be arranged on request.
HIRE CAR
Waiting when you land
Handlers arrange hire cars and chauffeurs, so a car can be ready when you come through, and ExecuJet lists both Hertz and Enterprise on site. The Algarve's coastal motorway, the A22, has been free of tolls since 1 January 2025, which makes driving yourself simpler than it used to be.
TAX FREE
Validate before you board
Shoppers resident outside the EU are entitled to a refund of Portuguese VAT on bigger purchases, provided the claim is confirmed at the airport on the way out. Confirmation is digital in Portugal; check with the handler a day ahead so that the step is not forgotten on a private departure.
ONE WAY BY AIRLINE
The ANA lounges and services
If an empty leg covers only one direction, the other can be an airline flight: easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair, British Airways, TUI and Aer Lingus all link Faro with Britain or Ireland. ANA runs a lounge on each side of passport control, open from 07:00 to 22:00 for stays of up to three hours, at 30 euros for an adult and 15 euros for a child aged three to twelve, and it accepts Priority Pass. ANA's Fast Track costs 11 euros online and shortens the security queue only. Its CIP service, a personal escort with lounge access and transport or accompaniment to the aircraft, is listed at about 156 euros a passenger before VAT, and porters charge 34.20 euros a passenger for up to three bags by day.

The one thing worth planning is the timing. Arrive outside the late morning peak in summer, keep the flight home well clear of midnight, and the rest of the airport takes care of itself.

VIP terminal lounge for private jet passengers

Four rules that shape a Faro trip

Seventy two hours on the ground
A visiting aircraft may normally stay at Faro for 72 hours at most. A long weekend fits if the flight home leaves no later in the day than the flight out arrived, and the airport can grant exceptions if asked well ahead. A week at the villa does not fit, so the aircraft flies away after the drop, either home or to Beja, and comes back for the pickup. Ask for the price of both positioning sectors with the charter, because either may be sold as an empty leg.
Midnight is a hard stop
Portuguese law closes Faro to landings and departures from midnight until 06:00. Portugal keeps the same clock as Britain, so a London departure at 21:30 would land at about ten past midnight and is not allowed. Leave London by around 21:00 at the latest, keep a margin for delays, and apply the same limit to the flight home.
Ten days for a summer slot
In the IATA summer season every flight needs a slot, and requests for private flights open only ten days before arrival. Book the aircraft early, four to six weeks ahead for peak dates, but keep an hour or two of flexibility on the time until the slot is confirmed.
Mornings are slow at the border
Until the planned VIP terminal opens, private passengers who do not book ANA's CIPSTAR lanes share passport control with airline traffic, and summer mornings from about 09:00 to 13:00 bring the longest waits. An early flight out of Britain that lands before nine, or an arrival in the afternoon, usually avoids them.

None of this makes Faro difficult. It simply explains why the Algarve produces more positioning sectors than its traffic would suggest, and why a flexible traveller can so often find one that fits.

Private jet on the apron before departure

What the ground costs in Faro

Portugal's charges on a private trip are modest, and they fall into three places.

On the invoice
ANA landing, parking and passenger charges and the handling fee, all included by the operator in the price of the flight
Carbon tax on departure
Charged per flight on every private departure from Portugal, from the number of seats and the distance flown
Tourist tax
2 euros a night in Loulé, which includes Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo and Vilamoura, from April to October, for up to five nights

Portugal has no passenger tax on private charters of the kind Italy and France charge. What it does have is a carbon tax on departures. Since July 2023, for aircraft of up to nineteen seats, it has been calculated per flight as 20 euros multiplied by the aircraft's maximum number of seats and by the distance in thousands of kilometres plus one. For a jet with nine seats flying from Faro to London, about 1,800 kilometres, that comes to roughly 500 euros, and for a twelve seat layout nearer 670 euros, however many people are actually on board. The flight into Faro pays nothing, and the operator collects the tax and adds it to the invoice.

Britain's own levy, Air Passenger Duty, falls on the outbound flight and not on the return. In the 2026 to 2027 tax year, jets weighing 20 tonnes or more, the Legacy 600 among them, pay its higher rate of 142 GBP per passenger to European destinations. A Praetor 600 weighs just under that line and is charged the standard 32 GBP, although from April 2027 the higher rate is due to cover every private jet above 5.7 tonnes. Tourist taxes are local: Loulé charges 2 euros a night from April to October and 1 euro in winter, capped at five nights and waived for under sixteens, and Faro, Albufeira, Portimão, Lagoa, Olhão and Vila Real de Santo António have taxes of their own.

Portimão, Beja, Lisbon and the other airports nearby

Faro serves the whole Algarve, and for most trips no other airport comes close. The alternatives matter mainly when the 72 hours run out, when a trip combines the Algarve with Lisbon or Seville, or when a very small aircraft wants to land near the western coast.

Portimão, PRM. A municipal airfield near the western Algarve and the Algarve International Circuit, with a runway of only 860 metres. It suits helicopters and light aircraft rather than jets, so for the Formula 1 weekend in June 2027 most private visitors will still land at Faro, about an hour away by road.
Beja, BYJ. An air force base with a civil terminal run by ANA, about 120 kilometres north of Faro, with runways of 3,450 and 2,951 metres. It needs no slots, and in summer 2026 long term parking there was available with at least 24 hours' notice, which makes it the natural place for an aircraft to wait when its time at Faro runs out.
Lisbon, LIS. The capital allows business aircraft only short turnarounds of 45 to 90 minutes and no parking, so a trip that combines Lisbon and the Algarve works best as two one way flights: land in Lisbon, drive south, and fly home from Faro. By road the two airports are about two hours and forty five minutes apart.
Cascais, LPCS. The small airport west of Lisbon, with a runway of about 1,400 metres, overnight parking and no slots, but open only from 08:00 until sunset, with later hours by arrangement. Useful for Cascais, Sintra and the Lisbon coast rather than the Algarve.
Seville, SVQ. Across the Spanish border, about two hours from Faro Airport by road, for Seville itself and western Andalusia. Parking there is scarce, so it works better for a quick drop than for a wait.

From the airport to Quinta do Lago, Vilamoura and the western Algarve

Faro Airport sits at the eastern end of the busiest stretch of the Algarve coast, and the golf estates begin a few kilometres to the west. The times below are for a car outside the rush; on summer Saturdays, when villa weeks change over, allow a little more.

Destination By road Notes
Faro old town About 10 minutes The walled old town and the marina, four kilometres east
Olhão About 20 minutes The fish market and boats to the Ria Formosa islands
Quinta do Lago 20 to 25 minutes About 20 kilometres; golf courses around the lake
Vale do Lobo 20 to 25 minutes About 22 kilometres; the Ocean and Royal courses
Vilamoura 25 to 30 minutes About 25 kilometres; the marina and the Old Course
Albufeira 35 to 40 minutes About 45 kilometres
Carvoeiro About 50 minutes About 65 kilometres; cliffs, coves and clifftop villas
Portimão and the circuit 55 minutes to 1 hour About 70 kilometres; the Algarve International Circuit
Lagos About 1 hour About 90 kilometres; the western Algarve
Sagres About 1 hour 25 About 120 kilometres; Cape St Vincent
Tavira 35 to 40 minutes About 40 kilometres east
Monte Rei About 45 minutes The Jack Nicklaus course near the Spanish border
Seville About 2 hours Across the border into Spain
Lisbon About 2 hours 45 About 280 kilometres by the A2 motorway

The A22 along the Algarve has been toll free since the start of 2025, so neither a transfer nor a hire car pays anything to use it, while the A2 to Lisbon still charges tolls. Helicopters are rarely needed here, because the main golf estates are less than half an hour away, but local operators fly transfers for up to five passengers by arrangement, for example to a villa on the western coast.

Popular routes between the UK and Faro, and which way they run empty

The figure in each row is what a single released sector usually sells for, and it covers the complete aircraft, whether two of you travel or nine. Chartering that jet for dates of your own choosing is about two and a half times dearer; the precise charter figure for every route sits in the price list below the board. Flight times count only the time airborne, so add around thirty minutes at either end for the ground.

Aberdeen to Faro 3h 25m 13,900 GBP Summer Occasional, out empty for a family party
Faro to Belfast 2h 50m 11,600 GBP All year Home to Belfast after a drop
Isle of Man to Faro 2h 50m 11,600 GBP Summer A few a season, out empty to collect
Faro to Dublin 2h 45m 11,200 GBP All year Home to Dublin after a drop, often on a Thursday or Friday

Two things set Faro apart from the other holiday airports on our board. The 72 hour limit means that any stay of four nights or more almost always produces two sectors, so the Algarve board is fuller than its private traffic alone would suggest. And because golf, second homes and school holidays overlap, sectors appear in most weeks of the year, with the quietest spells in early December and after the New Year.

Arriving in Faro from the UK

Portugal is in the Schengen area and Britain is not, so every private flight between them crosses the EU's external border, and Portuguese officers check it in the main terminal at Faro.

  • Passport. Portuguese officers check that the passport was issued within the last ten years and that it will still be valid three months after your planned departure from the Schengen countries. The Algarve counts towards the same limit of 90 days in any 180 as every other Schengen country, which matters to owners who spend long winters here.
  • Entry/Exit System. Portuguese border officers enrol British visitors in the EU's digital register on the first crossing, with a photograph and, for anyone twelve or older, fingerprints, and afterwards check each traveller against that record. It replaced passport stamps at every Schengen border in April 2026.
  • ETIAS. Not in force yet. In July 2026 the launch was put back to 2027, with no exact date; it will then cost 20 euros and cover three years, or until the passport runs out if that comes sooner.
  • Customs on arrival. Travellers from outside the EU may bring tobacco and alcohol within the usual duty free limits, and other goods up to 430 euros a head; anything above that, and cash of 10,000 euros or more, must be declared. Meat and dairy products from Britain are not allowed into Portugal.
  • Across the border to Spain. Portugal and Spain are both in Schengen, so a drive to Seville or Huelva involves no passport control, although you should still carry your passport.
  • Flying home. Back in Great Britain, the duty free allowance per adult is 42 litres of beer, 18 litres of wine, 4 litres of spirits, 200 cigarettes and 270 GBP of other goods, and meat and dairy products from the EU must be left behind. From 1 October 2026 sparkling wine falls within the wine allowance and cider within the beer one. Any member of the party holding another nationality should confirm in good time whether the UK's electronic travel authorisation applies to them.
  • Taxes. Air Passenger Duty on the way out of Britain, the Portuguese carbon tax on the way out of Portugal, and a municipal tourist tax on nights in most Algarve towns, Loulé, Faro, Albufeira and Portimão among them.

Empty leg calendar for Faro, month by month

The Algarve has three seasons for private flying: golf in spring and autumn, families in the school holidays, and a quieter but never empty winter. The cards show what fills each month.

Demand
The golf, school and motor racing calendar behind each month, and its effect on what a Faro charter costs.
Empty legs
Whether released Faro sectors are easy or hard to find that month, and the typical saving.

January
QuietFair
The quietest month, though daytime temperatures of around 15 degrees keep the golf courses open. Most sectors are owners' aircraft flying home after the New Year.
February
SteadyGood
Almond blossom, the carnival in Loulé and the February half term bring the first families and golfers of the year. Airport clearance is easy, and the 72 hour rule is the main source of sectors.
March
BusyGood
Spring golf at its best. Easter falls on 28 March in 2027, so the end of the month is busy with families as well as golfers.
April
BusyStrong
Easter holidays and the height of the spring golf season. The IATA summer season has begun, so slots are coordinated again, and Loulé's tourist tax moves to its higher summer rate.
May
BusyStrong
Golf, warm weather and the late May half term. Plenty of four and five night trips, and therefore plenty of positioning sectors in both directions.
June
BusyGood
The Portuguese Formula 1 Grand Prix returns to Portimão on 18 to 20 June 2027. Scotland's summer holidays begin in the last days of the month, and the jets that fly Scottish families out return north without passengers.
July
Very busyGood
The villa season in full swing, and in 2026 the PGA Tour Champions played its first Portugal Invitational at The Els Club in Vilamoura at the end of the month. Once English schools close in the second half of the month, each family flown out leaves a jet returning north empty, and those are the sectors to watch.
August
Very busyStrong
Peak family season. Around mid month the flow reverses: jets head south without passengers to bring families back, for Scotland first and for England in the final week, which makes them the year's best southbound sectors.
September
BusyStrong
The first days still bring empty aircraft sent to fetch English families, and then the autumn golf season begins. Warm sea, easier slots and a wide choice of sectors.
October
BusyStrong
Golfers return for the autumn, and the October half term adds families. The IATA summer season ends in the last week, and with it slot coordination at Faro.
November
SteadyGood
Golf continues, and the MotoGP Grand Prix of Portugal runs at Portimão on 20 to 22 November 2026. In winter Faro is not slot coordinated and a simple schedule clearance is enough, which makes short notice trips easier.
December
SteadyFair
Christmas and New Year bring owners back to their villas. The first half of the month is quiet; book the holiday fortnight early, because demand from Britain peaks in the days before Christmas.

Value hunters should watch southbound sectors from mid August to the end of the month, and northbound ones in the first half of July. For the easiest trip, choose spring or autumn: the golf is at its best, the sea is warming by May and still warm in October, and aircraft move between Britain and the Algarve every week.

Three situations, three answers

A long weekend of golf
Land on Thursday morning and leave by the same hour on Sunday, and the trip fits inside the 72 hour limit, so the aircraft can wait for you and fly you home, and the price is a simple round trip. Add a fourth night and the aircraft has to leave; the trip then becomes two one way charters with two positioning sectors, and that is where empty legs start to help.
Formula 1 at Portimão in June 2027
The Portuguese Grand Prix returns on 18 to 20 June 2027. Portimão's airfield is too short for jets, so fly to Faro, an hour away, and plan early: slots open only ten days ahead, and if the aircraft cannot stay the whole weekend it will wait at Beja or fly home between the two legs.
Lisbon and the Algarve in one trip
Lisbon gives business jets only a short turnaround, so land there and let the aircraft leave, travel south by car with a night or two on the coast or at Comporta, and fly home from Faro. Building the journey from two single flights gives more chances of meeting a released sector than one return booking.

Flying to Faro with a dog or a cat

Since 22 April 2026 the paperwork for taking a pet from Britain to any EU country has been the same: a microchip, a rabies vaccination given at least 21 days before the journey, and an animal health certificate issued by an official vet within ten days of travel, because EU pet passports held by people living in Britain are no longer accepted. Faro Airport is one of Portugal's designated entry points for pets arriving from outside the EU, with its own veterinary contact at the national food and veterinary authority, so the check on arrival is routine; tell the handler about the animal in advance, because departures with a pet also have their documents checked. Portugal requires dogs of the breeds it classes as potentially dangerous to be muzzled and on a lead in public, and most Algarve beaches keep dogs off during the bathing season, apart from a few designated ones. From January to April, keep dogs away from pine woods, where the hairy nests of processionary caterpillars can cause severe reactions, and ask your vet at home about protection against the sand flies that carry leishmaniasis.

The flight home needs the most care. British rules let dogs, cats and ferrets in only on an approved route with an approved operator, and dogs need a vet's tapeworm treatment no less than 24 hours and no more than five days before landing. English speaking vets across the Algarve see this request often, so fix the appointment at the same time as the flight, and tell us about the pet at the outset: we will then quote only operators that carry animals.

Questions about flying private to Faro

Can I fly into Faro after midnight?
No. Portuguese law closes Faro to landings and departures between midnight and 06:00, and the airport has no exception regime. Portugal keeps the same time as Britain, so plan to land by about half past eleven to leave room for delays.
Can the aircraft wait for me for a week?
Not normally. Visiting aircraft may stay no longer than 72 hours without the airport's agreement, so on longer trips the aircraft flies home or to Beja and returns for the pickup. That rule is the main reason Faro produces so many empty legs.
Is there a private terminal at Faro?
Not as a separate building. Handlers such as ExecuJet and Omni run their own lounges, and passengers are escorted through security and passport control in the main terminal, or through separate lanes if ANA's CIPSTAR service is booked for 380 euros a head. ANA plans a dedicated VIP terminal, still without an opening date.
How long from the aircraft to the car?
About ten minutes when the border desk is quiet. On summer mornings between about 09:00 and 13:00 passport control can add a noticeable wait, so an early or afternoon arrival, or ANA's CIPSTAR lanes, will be quicker.
Which golf courses are nearest?
Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo are about twenty minutes from the runway, Vilamoura about thirty, and Monte Rei, near the Spanish border, about forty five.
Does Portugal tax private flights?
Only through the carbon tax on departures. For a jet of up to nineteen seats it is worked out per flight from the seats and the distance, and for a nine seat jet flying from Faro to London it comes to about 500 euros. The flight into Portugal carries no Portuguese tax.
Which aircraft suits London to Faro?
A Phenom 300 or a Citation XLS carries six to eight people in about two hours and forty minutes, and a super midsize jet such as the Praetor 600 adds room for golf bags. For a group of up to twelve or thirteen, the Legacy 600 is the usual choice.
And if nothing is released for my dates?
Register the route with us, give the dates and how far they can move, and we will send the matching sector the moment an operator releases one. For Faro most sectors appear between a few days and a fortnight before departure, and the August and half term waves are usually visible earlier.

Call +44 7857 574938 , message the same number on WhatsApp , or write to flight@empty-leg.co.uk . Tell us which estate or town you are heading for, the dates, the number of travellers and how many golf bags are coming, and we will reply with the sectors that fit and the price of the same trip as a charter.
