Empty leg flights to and from Stuttgart

Stuttgart is one of the cradles of the motor car, where Gottlieb Daimler built his first engines, and cars are still made here. Mercedes-Benz has its headquarters in Untertürkheim, Porsche builds its sports cars in Zuffenhausen, and Bosch, Mahle, Trumpf, Kärcher and hundreds of engineering firms fill the valleys around the Neckar. The capital of Baden-Württemberg also has vineyards inside its own limits, the Cannstatter Volksfest every autumn, two of the best car museums in the world and palaces in Ludwigsburg and in the city itself, with the Black Forest and the Swabian Jura within an hour. Local time runs an hour ahead of London, and the flight from the Thames takes roughly ninety minutes in a light jet.

Private flights use Stuttgart Airport, code STR, on the Filder plateau about 13 kilometres south of the city, with the trade fair halls of Messe Stuttgart directly beside it.

Stuttgart sectors available today

The first list shows every sector currently offered into or out of Stuttgart. When Stuttgart itself is quiet, it adds flights at Schwäbisch Hall and Karlsruhe Baden-Baden, the two other nearby airfields that regularly take business jets. A second table gives full charter figures for the same jets, as a yardstick for any empty leg.

Ask us what is available at Stuttgart right now.

This board refreshes through the day as operators release sectors, and it shows only part of the market: a large share of repositioning flights never reach a public list at all. Check back shortly, or tell us your route and dates and we will look at what operators are holding at this moment.

Sectors on this list do not touch Stuttgart itself. They are shown because the fields are close enough that the drive rarely costs you more than waiting for the right sector does. Tell us which one interests you and we will confirm it is still open.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.

Set up an alert for Stuttgart

Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up between the UK and Stuttgart.

Please fill in both the departure and the arrival city.

What sends empty jets to and from Stuttgart

Stuttgart's private traffic is driven by industry, and industrial travel is full of one way trips, short stays and aircraft that go home without passengers.

Cars, suppliers and engineers
Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Bosch and their suppliers bring managers, engineers and customers to Stuttgart every working day. Most visits last a day or two, and the jet that brings them often leaves empty for its next job.
A home base for business jets
DC Aviation, one of Germany's largest business aviation groups, has its headquarters, hangar and maintenance centre at Stuttgart, and other operators keep aircraft here too, so jets start and end their days at the airport and position in and out empty.
The Messe beside the runway
Messe Stuttgart holds fairs for machine tools, automation, tourism, classic cars and food, and exhibitors can walk from the terminals to the halls. Fair weeks bring waves of arrivals and departures, with repositioning flights in between.
Football and the Volksfest
VfB Stuttgart's home games and the Cannstatter Volksfest in late September and early October bring visiting teams, sponsors and guests, many of them for a single day or a weekend.
The busiest business aircraft
Stuttgart saw 8,673 business aviation movements in 2025, led by the Pilatus PC-12 NG with 760, the Citation CJ4 with 606 and the Citation M2 with 605.

Sectors appear all year, with the most around the start and end of the working week, the big trade fairs and the Volksfest. Flights back to Britain on Thursday and Friday afternoons are released most often.

Stuttgart Airport in detail

The airport at Echterdingen opened in 1939 to replace the old airfield at Böblingen, and since 2014 it has carried the name of Manfred Rommel, Stuttgart's long serving mayor. It is owned by the state of Baden-Württemberg, with 65 per cent, and the city of Stuttgart, with 35 per cent. In 2025 it handled about 9.6 million passengers, 4.8 per cent more than in 2024, and 95,765 aircraft movements, and the airport expects slightly fewer passengers in 2026 as the regional economy slows. A new long distance railway station beneath the airport, part of the Stuttgart 21 project, is planned to cut the journey to the main station to about eight minutes, although Stuttgart 21 has slipped again and its opening now looks further away.

Codes STR (IATA) and EDDS (ICAO)
Location On the Filder plateau at Echterdingen, about 13 kilometres south of the centre of Stuttgart, beside the A8 motorway
Runway A single concrete runway, 07/25, of 3,345 metres, long enough for any aircraft that visits the airport
Elevation 389 metres, or 1,276 feet, above sea level
Operator Flughafen Stuttgart GmbH, owned by the state of Baden-Württemberg and the city of Stuttgart
Night rules Take offs until 23:00 and landings until 23:30, with delayed landings possible until midnight; no take offs from 23:00 and no landings from 23:30 until 06:00
Slots A coordinated airport where slots are required and handling is compulsory
General aviation terminal Run by Kurz Aviation Service, open from 05:30 to 23:00, and to 22:30 at weekends, with longer hours on request
Border control Customs and Federal Police available for flights from outside Schengen, around the clock with notice
Fire cover Category 10, the highest level
Traffic About 9.6 million passengers and 95,765 movements in 2025

For crews, Stuttgart is a comfortable airport: one long runway with instrument approaches in both directions, a separate apron for business aircraft beside the General Aviation Terminal and a handler that has worked there for years. The constraints are the night rules and the slots. Jets must be airborne by 23:00 and on the ground by 23:30, so an evening trip needs a margin, and every flight needs a slot, with the morning and evening waves filling first. Winter adds de icing on the high plateau, where frost and fog are more common than in the city below.

The General Aviation Terminal and its handlers

Private flights at Stuttgart use the General Aviation Terminal, a separate building on the edge of the airport with its own apron, security check and border control. Several companies handle aircraft there, and the operator chooses between them.

Kurz Aviation Service
Kurz Aviation Service runs the General Aviation Terminal and its Business Aviation Centre, part of a group with sister centres at Frankfurt and Cologne Bonn. It handles passengers and crews, security screening, marshalling, de icing, fuel and ground power, and arranges customs, catering, hire cars and hotels.
Hangars and stands
Kurz has a heated hangar of 6,000 square metres and a second one of 3,000, and its apron has stands for aircraft up to a wingspan of 29 metres, with larger jets parked on the main apron. Hangar space depends on availability and is best booked with the flight.
A VIP room and a crew lounge
The terminal's VIP lounge, of about 30 square metres, has airfield views, television, wireless internet and a table for six for a meeting or a quiet hour of work. Crews have their own lounge of about 50 square metres airside, with large windows onto the runway, drinks, snacks and a workstation.
VIP service for any flight
Kurz also sells a VIP service for passengers on airline flights, useful if one of your party flies home by airline: a personal meet and greet, a separate security check, a shuttle to the aircraft and, on the premium service, the lounge. Its published prices, including VAT, start at 235 euros for the basic departure service and 364 euros for the premium one, with 75 or 175 euros for each additional traveller, and 225 euros for an arrival.
Food, drinks and catering
The General Aviation Terminal has no restaurant of its own. The lounges offer drinks, snacks and, on the premium VIP service, a culinary selection from the handler's caterer, and a meal for the flight is ordered in advance through the handler, whose caterers work with restaurants in Stuttgart and can usually supply Swabian specialities such as Maultaschen or Spätzle.
Parking your own car
Travellers who drive themselves can leave the car right beside the terminal building; Kurz lists a daily parking charge of 28 euros, and its VIP service offers parking in front of the terminal at favourable rates and a valet on request.
DC Aviation
DC Aviation has its headquarters at Stuttgart, with a video monitored hangar of 5,000 square metres, direct access to the General Aviation Terminal, lounges for passengers and crews and a certified maintenance centre, and it handles the aircraft it manages as well as visiting jets.
Stuttgart Aviation Service
SAS Stuttgart Aviation Service is a further handler and fuel supplier at the General Aviation Terminal, with Jet A1, Avgas and ramp handling for visiting aircraft.

We can ask for a particular handler when you book. Whichever one looks after the aircraft, the passengers pass through the same terminal and the same border control.

Arriving at Stuttgart, step by step

Stuttgart is quick for a private passenger: fifteen minutes or so separate engine shutdown from the car door, and leaving follows the same path backwards.

ON THE APRON
Greeted at the aircraft
A Kurz or DC Aviation agent greets you at the steps and takes you the short distance to the terminal building, and the luggage follows on a cart.
PASSPORTS
Border control in the terminal
A flight from Britain arrives from outside Schengen, so the Federal Police check passports in the General Aviation Terminal. Anyone crossing for the first time under the EU's new digital border system has a photograph taken, and travellers aged twelve and over also give fingerprints.
LUGGAGE
No carousel, no queue
There is no check in desk and no baggage belt. Your handler's agent wheels the cases from the aircraft past the customs desk and out to your driver, and for the flight home the same cases are screened at the terminal's own checkpoint before going back into the hold. Declare samples or goods for a trade fair stand in advance.
CARS
Parking at the building
Your driver can wait at the terminal, which has parking beside the building. The city centre, the Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen and the Messe are all within half an hour.
TRADE FAIRS
A short walk or drive
Messe Stuttgart lies just across the motorway from the airport. From the General Aviation Terminal a car is quickest, and on the busiest fair days the handler can arrange a driver in advance.
TIMING
Wheels up before eleven
No aircraft may take off after 23:00. A late dinner in the city before the flight home therefore needs a margin, and after that the aircraft stays until the morning.
TAX FREE
German VAT back
Visitors living outside the EU can reclaim German VAT on goods from the Königstrasse or a Porsche or Mercedes-Benz brand shop, once customs at the airport have stamped the export papers; tell the handler the day before.
AIRLINE ONE WAY
Heathrow by airline
If the private flight covers only one direction, Eurowings links Stuttgart with London Heathrow, British Airways having dropped the route in March 2026, and the Kurz VIP service can make the airline departure as smooth as a private one. Inside Terminal 3, beyond security, The Aviator Gallery lounge sells entry for 39 euros, with hot and cold food, apron views and a two hour stay, open from 05:00 to 20:30.

At Stuttgart the passengers rarely set the limits. The slot, the 23:00 departure rule and fog on the plateau in winter are what we plan around, and we settle them when you book.

Before you book Stuttgart: five questions

We put the answers to these five questions in writing with every Stuttgart quote, because each of them can change the plan.

A slot at a coordinated airport
Every private flight to Stuttgart needs a slot, and the handler requests it as soon as the flight is confirmed. Morning and evening peaks and fair weeks fill first.
Airborne by 23:00
Take offs end at 23:00 and landings at 23:30. For a late evening we plan the departure before the limit or keep the aircraft overnight.
A hangar in winter
On frosty nights on the plateau a heated hangar saves de icing time in the morning. Kurz and DC Aviation have hangars, but space must be booked.
Luftverkehrsteuer on the way home
The operator adds 13.03 euros per passenger to the return flight, the German levy on commercial departures to destinations within about 2,500 kilometres, at the rate in force since 1 July 2026.
Prototypes, tools and samples
Anything carried for a factory or a stand, from a prototype part to a box of brochures, counts as commercial cargo at German customs. Let us know what it is and what it is worth, and the paperwork will be ready before take off.

From the airport to the city, the factories and the Black Forest

The airport sits south of the city, between Stuttgart, Sindelfingen and Esslingen, so most destinations are close. The times assume a driver collecting you at the business aviation building at a quiet hour; Stuttgart's valley roads can double them at peak times.

Destination From the airport What is there
Messe Stuttgart About 5 to 10 minutes The trade fair halls beside the airport
City centre and Königstrasse About 25 to 30 minutes The palaces, the main shopping street and the hotels
Mercedes-Benz Museum About 20 to 25 minutes The museum and the MHPArena, home of VfB Stuttgart, in Bad Cannstatt
Porsche Museum, Zuffenhausen About 30 minutes The museum and the Porsche factory
Sindelfingen About 20 minutes The Mercedes-Benz plant and its customer centre
Bosch, Gerlingen About 25 minutes The Bosch headquarters at Schillerhöhe
Ludwigsburg About 35 minutes The baroque palace and its gardens
Tübingen About 35 minutes The university town on the Neckar
Baden-Baden About 1h 15m The spa town, the casino and the northern Black Forest
Schwäbisch Hall About 1h The old town and the Würth group headquarters in Künzelsau nearby

S Bahn lines S2 and S3 run from the airport to Stuttgart main station in about half an hour, and a long distance station beneath the airport is being built as part of Stuttgart 21. Most private passengers still prefer a chauffeured car, which goes door to door to a plant gate or a hotel.

Taxes and charges on a Stuttgart trip

Beyond the aircraft price, a Stuttgart trip involves British duty on the flight out, German air transport tax on the flight home and the new city tax on hotel nights.

Outbound: UK APD
charged when the jet leaves Britain; Germany is a Band A destination, and jets under 5.7 tonnes are exempt
Return: Luftverkehrsteuer
13.03 euros a head on the flight from Stuttgart to Britain, the rate in force since 1 July 2026
Stuttgart overnight tax
a flat 3 euros per guest per night, introduced on 1 July 2026; under eighteens and school groups pay nothing
Fees on the ground
the operator pays landing, noise, security and handling charges and builds them into its quote

Under the German Air Transport Tax Act, a passenger leaving any German airport on a commercial flight pays a levy set by how far away the destination is, and charter flights on business jets are no exception. Britain is in the lowest band, and the rate fell from 15.53 to 13.03 euros on 1 July 2026. The tax is due only on the flight home; a positioning flight with an empty cabin pays nothing, but once you buy the sector, its passengers pay in the normal way.

Stuttgart introduced its overnight tax on 1 July 2026 at a flat 3 euros a person a night, paid through the hotel. On the British side, duty is charged only on departures from the UK, and Germany is in Band A: 32 GBP a passenger on a jet of 5.7 to 20 tonnes and 142 GBP on a heavier one until March 2027, then 146.63 GBP for every private jet from 5.7 tonnes. Very light jets below 5.7 tonnes and flights out of the Channel Islands escape it altogether, while Scottish departures come under Holyrood's own tax from April 2027.

Schwäbisch Hall, Karlsruhe Baden-Baden and the other airports of the region

Stuttgart is the natural airport for the city, the car makers and the Messe, but two other airfields near Stuttgart regularly take business jets and are worth knowing.

Stuttgart, EDDS. The main airport, with 3,345 metres of runway, the General Aviation Terminal, hangars for business jets and night rules from 23:00 for take offs and 23:30 for landings.
Schwäbisch Hall, EDTY. The Adolf Würth Airport, about an hour north east of Stuttgart by road, with a runway extended to 1,540 metres, suited to light and midsize jets bound for Hohenlohe and the Würth group.
Karlsruhe Baden-Baden, EDSB. About an hour and a quarter west by road, with a runway of about 3,000 metres, close to Baden-Baden and the northern Black Forest.
Zurich, LSZH. Across the Swiss border, about two and a half hours by road from Stuttgart, a useful option when a trip continues to Switzerland or the Alps.

Routes from Britain and Ireland to Stuttgart, and which way they run empty

Each price below buys the whole aircraft, whatever the number of passengers, and each flight time runs from take off to touchdown. At roughly 750 kilometres from London, Stuttgart is within easy nonstop range of everything in the table, which runs from a six or seven seat Citation M2 back to Biggin Hill or Jersey up to a Challenger 350 for a management team with cases of equipment. The return leg also carries the German Luftverkehrsteuer. For fixed dates, compare with the charter list near the top.

Entering Germany at Stuttgart: passports, customs and business goods

A private flight from Britain to Stuttgart crosses the external border of the EU and the Schengen area, and the Federal Police and customs clear it in the General Aviation Terminal.

  • Passport. Border officers check that a British passport is under ten years old on arrival and still has at least three months left after your intended exit from Schengen.
  • Length of stay. Meetings, trade fairs and holidays need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180 across Schengen; hands on work at a plant may count as employment, so check in advance.
  • Entry/Exit System. Passport stamps have given way to a digital record since April 2026; the first time you enter, your face is photographed and, for anyone twelve or older, four fingers are scanned.
  • ETIAS. The EU's travel permit has not started, and in July 2026 its launch slipped to 2027; when it arrives, it is expected to cost 20 euros and to last three years.
  • Customs. Each adult coming from Britain may bring in duty free 200 cigarettes, 4 litres of still wine, 16 of beer, a litre of spirits or two of sparkling or fortified wine and other goods worth up to 430 euros; 10,000 euros or more in cash must be declared.
  • Prototypes and samples. A prototype part, a set of tools or the exhibits for a fair stand need an ATA Carnet or a customs declaration, and both are drawn up before take off.
  • Back to Britain. On the way home an adult may bring in without duty 18 litres of still wine, perhaps some Trollinger or Lemberger from the Stuttgart hills, 42 of beer, 4 of spirits or 9 of fortified wine, 200 cigarettes and 270 GBP of other goods; from 1 October 2026 sparkling wine falls within the wine limit and cider within the beer limit.

Three situations in Stuttgart, three answers

A day at a car maker
Fly out at breakfast, land at Stuttgart in about an hour and a half and be at Sindelfingen or Zuffenhausen within half an hour. Ask for the slot and the return when you book, and keep an eye on aircraft that bring other clients to the car makers in the morning and would otherwise leave empty.
An evening at the Volksfest
The festival runs late, but take offs end at 23:00. Either leave before the limit or keep the aircraft overnight in a hangar, and in both cases tell us early, since hotels and stands fill during the festival.
Parts for a plant
Prototypes and tools need customs papers, and a larger jet may be needed for the cargo. Tell us the size and value of the goods, and we will match the aircraft and prepare the documents with the handler.

Taking a dog or a cat to Stuttgart

A dog, cat or ferret flying from Britain to Germany must carry a microchip, have a rabies vaccination given at least 21 days before travel and come with an animal health certificate issued by an official vet within ten days of arrival; since April 2026 an EU pet passport held by a British resident no longer counts. German rules add no worming requirement on arrival; the officers look at the papers in the business aviation building while the owners clear passport control.

Dog in the cabin of a private jet to Stuttgart

Coming home, pets may only fly with an operator approved to bring animals into the UK, and dogs must be wormed by a vet no earlier than five days and no later than one day before the flight lands. Stuttgart vets are used to this; book the appointment when you book the flight, and tell us about the pet at the start so that our search covers only approved operators.

Give us the date, the number of travellers and any flexibility. Sectors to Stuttgart appear every week, and when none fits we price a charter with the slot included.

Call +44 7857 574938 , message the same number on WhatsApp , or write to flight@empty-leg.co.uk . Let us know the day, how many are flying, whether you carry samples or parts and whether you are heading for a factory, the Messe or a hotel in town. Our answer lists any sectors that fit alongside a full charter figure, with the slot, the handling at Echterdingen, the German levy and the transfer already priced in.
