Empty leg flights to and from Madeira

Madeira is a Portuguese island in the Atlantic, about 2,500 kilometres south west of London and closer to Morocco than to Lisbon, with a mild climate all year, the Laurisilva forest listed by UNESCO, levada walks along old irrigation channels and the wine that carries its name. British travellers have come for the winter sun since the nineteenth century, and today many private flights from the UK bring families for a week or two, golfers, walkers and guests of the Christmas and New Year celebrations in Funchal. The island keeps the same clock as Britain, winter and summer, and a light or midsize jet reaches it from London in about three hours and fifty minutes.

The island's airport, named after Cristiano Ronaldo and coded FNC, lies at Santa Cruz on the east coast, 13 kilometres from Funchal. It is a demanding airport for pilots: the runway sits between the mountains and the sea, the approach ends in a turn close to the cliffs, and strong winds can stop landings for hours. Every private flight also needs a slot and a parking stand agreed in advance, so a trip to Madeira is planned more carefully than most.

Madeira sectors available today

The list below shows every sector we hold into or out of Madeira. When Madeira is quiet, it adds flights at Porto Santo, Tenerife and Gran Canaria, the neighbouring island airports from which Madeira is a short hop. Next to it, a table gives the regular charter price for the same aircraft types between Britain and Madeira on dates of your choosing, so every released sector can be judged against the full fare.

Both columns assume an aircraft already at the departure airport, so no positioning flight is billed. Where an operator has to fly one in to collect you, a charter can run considerably higher than the figure shown. Prices also run in both directions: an empty leg exists only when an operator is moving that aircraft anyway, so the sector you want may run the other way this month. Tell us the route and we will watch both directions for you.

Set up an alert for Madeira

Most empty legs are gone within hours of being released, and a good number are never published at all. Tell us the route and the window you can travel in, and we will message you the moment a matching sector comes up between the UK and Madeira.

Please fill in both the departure and the arrival city.

Why jets fly empty between Britain and Madeira

Madeira is a holiday island with a long flight at either end, and few operators leave an aircraft waiting there for a week. Five things turn that pattern into empty sectors.

Holidays of a week or more
Many British clients stay a week, a fortnight or even a whole winter. Keeping a jet and its crew on the island that long costs more than flying it home, so the aircraft usually leaves the day it drops the family and comes back empty to collect them, a trip of almost four hours each way.
Too few parking stands
Madeira Airport is short of aircraft parking, and a stand request is compulsory for every flight. When no stand is free for the days of the stay, the operator has no choice but to send the aircraft away, and that repositioning flight can be sold.
Winter sun and the festivals
British demand is strongest from December to May, when Britain is cold or grey and Madeira stays mild, with a further rise for Carnival, Easter, the Flower Festival in May and the New Year fireworks over Funchal Bay. Aircraft arrive full over a few days and leave empty, and the pattern reverses at the end of each holiday.
Wind and diversions
Strong winds regularly stop landings at Santa Cruz, and flights divert to Porto Santo or to the Canary Islands to wait. Schedules for the following days shift, aircraft end up away from where they are needed, and the flights that put them back in position can be offered as empty legs.
Late arrivals
Portuguese law restricts take offs and landings at Madeira between midnight and 06:00, and the handlers' normal day runs from 04:30 to 00:30. A jet that drops passengers late in the evening either leaves at once or stays until morning, and when it is needed elsewhere the late flight home becomes an empty leg.

Sectors appear in every month, with the most around Christmas and New Year, at Carnival and Easter, and through the Flower Festival in May. Because the flight is long and stands have to be requested in advance, operators plan these repositionings early, so Madeira sectors can appear several days before departure.

Madeira Airport in detail

The airport opened on 8 July 1964 with a runway of 1,600 metres, which grew to 1,800 metres in 1986 and was extended again on 15 September 2000 onto a platform built partly over the ocean and carried by 180 columns about 70 metres tall; the structure received the Outstanding Structure Award of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering in 2004. The present passenger terminal opened in 2002, and it was rebranded with the name of Cristiano Ronaldo, who was born in Funchal, on 29 March 2017. The airport is run by ANA Aeroportos de Portugal, part of VINCI Airports, and in November 2025 it passed five million passengers in a single year for the first time, after traffic had doubled in a decade; over 2025 as a whole it grew by about 12 per cent. Together with Porto Santo, the island's airports handled about 5.7 million passengers and 38,700 aircraft movements in 2025, and 26 airlines now link Madeira with 65 destinations in 24 countries, New York among them since United Airlines began flying from Newark in 2025.

Codes FNC (IATA) and LPMA (ICAO)
Location Santa Cruz, on the east coast of Madeira, 13.2 kilometres from Funchal
Runway One runway, 05/23, 45 metres wide, with 2,481 metres available for landing and 2,631 metres for take off in each direction; the eastern end rests on the platform over the sea
Elevation 58 metres, or 191 feet, above sea level
Operator ANA Aeroportos de Portugal, part of VINCI Airports
Night rules Take offs and landings are restricted by law between 00:00 and 06:00 local time, within a small quota of night movements, and the noisiest aircraft may not be scheduled between 02:00 and 05:00
Slots and parking A coordinated airport: every private flight needs a slot, and a stand request is compulsory because parking is short
Apron One main apron with 18 stands, shared by airliners and business aircraft; there is no separate apron for general aviation
Approaches No instrument landing system: approaches are flown by VOR and DME with a visual circling finish, or by satellite RNP procedures, several of which require special approval for the operator
Wind limits Mandatory limits by wind direction for revenue flights with more than 10 passenger seats; operators apply their own limits to smaller jets
Handling From 04:30 to 00:30 local time, and on request at other hours; ExecuJet, Omni Handling and Wexjet Aviation handle business aircraft
Border and customs Around the clock; a flight from Britain crosses the external Schengen border, and the Public Security Police check passports
Fuel Jet A1 and Avgas 100LL, around the clock
Hangars and repairs No hangar space for visiting aircraft, and minor repairs only
Rescue and fire cover Category 7 as standard, raised to category 9 with 72 hours' notice
Pets A designated entry point for dogs, cats and ferrets arriving from outside the EU; Porto Santo is not

For a crew, Madeira is an airport that has to be learnt. There is no instrument landing system, the approach to runway 05 ends in a visual turn close to the coast, the runway lies between steep hills and the sea, and turbulence and wind shear from the mountains are common. Portuguese rules require captains of larger aircraft to have at least 200 hours in command on the type and recent experience at Madeira, in the aircraft or in a simulator, and a captain may fly in at night only after having landed there in daylight. Business jet operators set their own limits and training for Madeira in their manuals, so not every operator accepts the flight, and we approach only those that do.

Wind, slots and the night pause at Madeira

Four rules shape every private flight to Madeira. We check all four when the flight is booked, and the wind again on the day before departure.

Wind limits by direction
Portugal publishes maximum wind speeds for landing at Madeira, set by wind direction: in the most sensitive sectors 15 knots with gusts of 25, in others 20 knots with gusts of 30. They are mandatory for commercial flights with more than 10 passenger seats, and an operator's own manual may set lower figures for a smaller business jet. When the wind is beyond them the aircraft holds, tries again or diverts, and both March and June 2026 brought days of diversions. In August 2024 four days of strong wind caused more than 80 cancellations and diversions, some of them as far as Lisbon, Lanzarote and Barcelona.
A slot and a stand
Madeira is one of the coordinated airports of Portugal, so a private flight needs a slot from Slot Coordination Portugal like any airline. Because stands are short, the airport also asks for a parking request with every flight, and a stay of several days is possible only if a stand is free for the whole period.
The night pause
Between 00:00 and 06:00 local time take offs and landings are restricted by law. A limited quota of night movements exists, larger at Christmas, New Year, Carnival, Easter and the Flower Festival, but an ordinary private flight is planned to land and leave inside the day.
Daylight first
A captain may land at Madeira at night only after operating there by day, and many operators prefer a daylight arrival in any case. For a flight from Britain that usually means leaving in the morning or around midday and landing in the afternoon.

Wind is the one factor no booking can remove. If Santa Cruz is closed when the aircraft arrives, the crew wait in the air, try the other runway direction or divert to Porto Santo, 60 kilometres away. The jet can then hop back as soon as conditions allow, and Porto Santo is also linked to Funchal by a car ferry.

Handlers, CIPSTAR lanes, lounges and cafés at Madeira

Madeira has no separate terminal for private flights. Passengers of business aircraft pass through the main terminal with an escort from their handler, and ANA offers a paid service with its own lanes for security and passport control. The handler is chosen by the operator, but a request for a particular company or for the CIPSTAR lanes is usually accepted when it comes with the booking.

No private terminal
Madeira has no separate building for business aviation. The handler meets passengers at the aircraft or at the terminal door, takes them through the Public Security Police at the border and through customs or security, and drives them across the apron to the aircraft steps.
CIPSTAR at Madeira
CIPSTAR is ANA's service for passengers of private aircraft, with dedicated facilities and segregated lanes for security and passport control. At Madeira it used to cost 520 euros for up to two passengers, plus 180 euros for each companion; from 25 July 2026 until the end of 2026, or until new rates are approved, the price is 190 euros a passenger including VAT, and a single traveller can book it.
ExecuJet at Madeira and Porto Santo
The former Sky Valet station, now part of the ExecuJet network of the Luxaviation group, has two VIP and crew lounges and a meeting room at Madeira and works around the clock on request. It books catering, hotels and hire cars, liaises with customs and coordinates slots, and it also runs a station with a VIP and crew lounge at Porto Santo, open from 07:00 to 22:00.
Omni Handling and Wexjet
Two Portuguese business aviation handlers are also listed at Madeira. Omni Handling runs a national network of business aviation stations, and Wexjet Aviation works at airports across Portugal and the islands, so an operator already using either company on the mainland can keep the same team on the island.
The ANA Lounge
For a passenger who flies one way by airline, the ANA Lounge on the third floor after security opens from 07:00 to 22:00 for stays of up to three hours. It serves coffee, tea, snacks and drinks with and without alcohol, has its own wireless internet and a view over the airfield, and entry costs 30 euros for an adult and 15 euros for a child aged three to twelve; DragonPass members and passengers of partner airlines, British Airways and TAP among them, may enter free or at a reduced price.
The CIP lounges
ANA's CIP service, at 81 euros in its 2026 price list, gives an airline passenger personal assistance, a dedicated lounge and separate transport to the aircraft. On arrival the Europa lounge lets guests wait for their bags in comfort, and on departure the Atlântico lounge looks out over the sea, each with television, computers, a bar and snacks for stays of up to three hours.
Fast Lane
A dedicated channel through security on the third floor of the terminal, open around the clock, costs 9 euros online or 10 euros at the kiosk. It shortens the security queue only; passport control for flights to Britain is a separate step.
Passport queues
Since the Entry/Exit System began, arrivals from Britain have met long waits at passport control at busy times: in July 2026 passengers from several British flights between 10:00 and 12:00 reported queues of more than 30 minutes. The police reinforced the border team, but a private passenger without CIPSTAR can still meet those queues at peak hours.
Food and drink in the terminal
The handlers' lounges are made for a short wait, so for a meal the terminal is the place. Before security, Go to Café in the arrivals area opens from 07:00 to midnight for breakfast, warm dishes and salads, indoors or outdoors. After security, Cockpit serves tapas, small pans of comfort food, soups and salads at its bar from 07:00 to 21:00, with a cafeteria open from 02:30 to 22:30, and Bites & Beer offers burgers, salads and sandwiches with the local Coral beer and a view over the sea, from 07:00 to 21:00.
Last minute shopping
In the terminal, Portugal Duty Free sells drinks, perfume and Portuguese delicacies, Flowers To Go packs Madeira flowers for travel, and Travel & Business Gate stocks suitcases and travel accessories. Cases of Madeira wine bought in town travel in the hold like any other luggage, so tell the operator about them in advance.
Help with mobility
ANA's free MyWay assistance for passengers with reduced mobility is requested through the airline at least 48 hours before an airline flight. On a private flight the handler arranges the help instead, so anyone who finds the aircraft steps difficult should tell us before we choose the aircraft.

The options differ in who can use them, what they include and how they are paid for.

Option Who it is for What it includes Hours Price
Handler escort Every private passenger Meeting at the aircraft, escort through the border, customs and security, transport on the apron, a lounge where the handler has one While the handler is on duty, 04:30 to 00:30 as standard Included in the operator's price
CIPSTAR Passengers of private aircraft who book it Dedicated facilities and segregated lanes for security and passport control By booking 190 euros a passenger including VAT until the end of 2026
ANA Lounge Airline passengers after security Coffee, tea, snacks, drinks, wireless internet and a view over the airfield 07:00 to 22:00, up to three hours 30 euros, 15 euros for a child aged three to twelve
CIP service Airline passengers who book it Personal assistance, the Europa and Atlântico lounges and separate transport to the aircraft By booking 81 euros in the 2026 price list
Cafés and bars Anyone; Go to Café before security, Cockpit and Bites & Beer after it Breakfast, warm dishes, tapas, burgers, salads, coffee and a sea view from Bites & Beer From 07:00 to between 21:00 and midnight; Cockpit cafeteria from 02:30 Paid on the spot

Handling is booked by the operator together with the slot and the stand. Tell us about CIPSTAR, a particular handler or a car when you book, and we arrange them in the same request.

Arriving at Madeira and leaving again, step by step

With a handler at your side, the walk from the aircraft to the car at Madeira takes about a quarter of an hour on a quiet day, and longer when airline arrivals fill the border hall.

TOUCHDOWN
A stand on the main apron
Business aircraft park on stands allocated in advance on the main apron. The handler's agent is waiting at the steps with a vehicle, and the bags are unloaded while you board it.
THE BORDER
The police check your passports
A flight from Britain enters Schengen at Madeira, so the Public Security Police check every passport and, on a first entry since the Entry/Exit System started, record a photograph and, from the age of twelve, four fingerprints. With CIPSTAR this happens in a segregated lane; otherwise the agent takes you to the border desks in the terminal.
CUSTOMS
Declarations and pets
Goods above the allowances are declared to customs on arrival, and the handler brings the papers of any dog or cat for the veterinary check, as Madeira Airport is a designated entry point for pets.
YOUR BAGS
Carried for you both ways
The handler's team carries the suitcases from the aircraft to your car, and on departure from the car through screening to the hold. Golf bags and walking gear are welcome, but a light jet has a small hold, so the operator needs to know about them before the flight.
DEPARTURE
Arrive forty five minutes early
On the way home, meet the handler at the agreed point in the terminal about 45 minutes before take off, because the border exit check and security take place in the shared terminal. With CIPSTAR, half an hour is usually enough.
SECURITY
The same check as airline passengers
Passengers and hand luggage are screened like airline travellers, either in the CIPSTAR lane or with the handler's agent beside you in the main security area.
WAITING
A handler lounge or ANA's
If the aircraft is not ready, ExecuJet has VIP lounges of its own, the ANA Lounge on the third floor is open to anyone after security for up to three hours, and Cockpit and Bites & Beer serve food after security.
CATERING
Ordered a day ahead
Place the catering order with the handler no later than the day before departure; island fruit, pastries and grilled fish travel well, and a menu of your own is just as easy. Hot dishes need an oven on board, which we check with the operator.
THE CAR
Booked with the flight
The handler can book a chauffeured car or a hire car to wait for you. A taxi to central Funchal costs about 25 to 30 euros and takes some 20 minutes, with a surcharge of around a fifth at night, at weekends and on holidays.
WIND DAYS
Keep the phone on
If strong winds are forecast, the operator may move the departure from Britain, and a diversion to Porto Santo or the Canaries can add hours. We watch the forecast with the crew and call you as soon as the plan changes.
VAT REFUND
Validate before boarding
Purchases by visitors living outside the EU can be tax free, but the claim has to be confirmed at the airport before take off. Ask the handler the day before, so that the step is not missed on the way to the aircraft.
ONE WAY BY AIRLINE
Easy to combine
easyJet, Jet2, British Airways, Ryanair and TUI fly between Madeira and Britain, so one direction of the trip can be an airline flight with the ANA Lounge, the CIP service or the Fast Lane.

The slot, the stand, the handler, the arrival hour and the car are all fixed before the aircraft leaves Britain, in one booking with us.

Business aircraft at Madeira Airport

Five points to settle before a Madeira trip

Each of these can move the date, the time or the cost of a Madeira flight, so our first reply to any request covers all five.

A plan for the wind
Agree in advance what happens if Madeira is closed: waiting at Porto Santo, continuing to Tenerife or leaving Britain later. A flexible departure time is worth more on this route than on most.
Slot and stand
The slot and the parking stand are requested together as soon as the aircraft is held, and at Christmas, New Year and during the festivals stands run short quickly. A long stay depends on a free stand, so the operator may prefer to fly the aircraft away and back.
Day flights
With movements restricted after midnight and daylight arrivals preferred, plan to land by late afternoon and to leave by the evening. A dinner in Funchal on the last night is usually followed by a morning departure.
Portugal's tax on departures
Portugal charges its carbon tax on private departures, so the flight home from Madeira carries it and the flight out does not. For a seven seat jet to London it comes to about 490 euros, and the operator adds it to the invoice.
A range that fits
At some 2,500 kilometres from London, Madeira is beyond the comfortable range of the smallest jets once winds and reserves are counted. Light jets such as the Citation CJ3 manage from southern England, while Scotland and the north usually need a midsize or super midsize aircraft.

From the airport to Funchal and around the island

The coastal expressway runs from the airport to Funchal and on along the south coast, and tunnels bring the north within an hour. Driving times are estimates for a chauffeured car in light traffic, and the mountain roads are slower than the distance suggests.

Destination From the airport What is there
Machico About 10 minutes The bay where the Portuguese discoverers first landed in 1419, with a sandy beach just north of the runway
Caniço and Garajau About 10 minutes Resort hotels on the cliffs above a protected marine reserve
Palheiro gardens and golf About 15 minutes Historic gardens and an 18 hole course in the hills above Funchal
Santo da Serra About 20 minutes The island's second established golf course, on a plateau in the east
Central Funchal About 20 minutes The Old Town, the cathedral, the market, the marina and the large hotels of the capital
Câmara de Lobos About 30 minutes A fishing village west of Funchal, at the foot of the sea cliffs of Cabo Girão
Santana About 40 minutes The north coast village of traditional thatched houses
Calheta and Ponta do Sol About 45 minutes The sunny south west coast, with a marina, a beach and quiet hotels
Pico do Arieiro About 50 minutes The mountain road to one of the highest peaks, starting point of the summit trail to Pico Ruivo
Porto Moniz About 1h 10m The natural rock pools at the north western tip of the island

Buses run from the airport to Funchal, but with luggage a car is simpler, and the handler can arrange one to wait at the terminal whatever the hour of landing. For Porto Santo, the ferry leaves from Funchal harbour and crosses in about two hours and twenty minutes, or a short flight links the two islands.

What a Madeira trip adds to the bill

Taxes on a Madeira trip arise at three points: British duty on the way out, the Portuguese carbon tax on the way back, and a local charge on hotel nights.

UK duty
Air Passenger Duty on the flight out of Britain, Band A, for aircraft of 5.7 tonnes or more
Carbon tax
charged by Portugal on each private departure, from the aircraft's seats and the distance flown
Tourist tax
2 euros a night per guest in most municipalities, for up to seven nights
Airport and handling
ANA's landing, parking and passenger charges and the handler's fee, all in the operator's quote

Air Passenger Duty applies only to the flight leaving the UK, and Portugal, Madeira included, falls in Band A. The per passenger charge is 32 GBP for a private jet between 5.7 and 20 tonnes and 142 GBP for one of 20 tonnes or more in the 2026 to 2027 tax year, and from 1 April 2027 the two merge into one private jet rate of 146.63 GBP. Every jet on our Madeira list weighs more than 5.7 tonnes, so all of them pay. The Channel Islands lie outside the duty altogether. Scotland takes over its own departures from April 2027 with the Air Departure Tax, and the Scottish government has announced a separate charge on private jets from April 2028.

Portugal's carbon tax is charged per flight on private departures from any Portuguese airport, Madeira included: 20 euros multiplied by the number of seats and by the distance in thousands of kilometres plus one. An aircraft certified for seven seats pays about 490 euros from Madeira to London and one with nine seats about 700 euros to Aberdeen, and a take off that follows a landing forced by weather or a technical problem is exempt, so a diversion to Porto Santo does not add a second charge. The flight into Madeira pays no Portuguese tax. Madeira sets its own VAT rates, lower than those of the mainland, with a standard rate of 22 per cent against 23. Nearly every municipality on the two islands, Funchal, Santa Cruz and Calheta among them, adds a tourist tax of 2 euros a night per guest for up to seven nights, with residents and children under 13 exempt.

Walkers pay one more charge: since 1 January 2026 every classified walking trail on Madeira must be booked in advance through the regional SIMplifica portal, in 30 minute slots, at 4.50 euros a person. Trail slots are best booked as soon as the dates are fixed, because the famous summit and levada routes fill up in high season.

Porto Santo, the Canaries and the other airports around Madeira

Madeira Airport serves nearly every private trip to the island. Porto Santo is its natural partner, and the Canary Islands and Lisbon are the other airports that matter when the wind closes Santa Cruz or when the journey continues.

Madeira, LPMA. The island's main airport at Santa Cruz, 13 kilometres from Funchal, with 2,481 metres available for landing, compulsory slots and stand requests, mandatory wind limits for larger commercial aircraft and restricted movements between midnight and 06:00.
Porto Santo, LPPS. On the neighbouring island, about 60 kilometres to the north east, 2 kilometres from the town of Vila Baleira, with a runway of 3,000 metres, shared with a detachment of the Portuguese Air Force. Customs work from 07:00 to 23:00, and it is the usual diversion airport for Madeira; it is not an entry point for pets from outside the EU.
Tenerife North, GCXO. About 470 kilometres to the south, on the Canary Islands and an hour's flight from Madeira; flights that cannot land at Madeira often divert to Tenerife.
Tenerife South, GCTS. On the southern coast of Tenerife, about 520 kilometres from Madeira, and the island's main airport for flights to Britain.
Gran Canaria, GCLP. About 550 kilometres from Madeira, a useful stop for a trip that combines Madeira with the Canary Islands.
Lisbon, LPPT. The Portuguese capital, 965 kilometres to the north east and about an hour and three quarters away, where a trip to Madeira can begin or end on the mainland.

Popular routes between the UK and Madeira, and which way they run empty

Every figure in the table is for the entire aircraft on a positioning flight, whatever the size of your party, and the times count only the hours airborne. London and Madeira are about 2,500 kilometres apart, so the aircraft range from light jets such as the Citation CJ3 on the shorter runs from southern England, Wales and Jersey to the Legacy 500, the Praetor 600 and the Challenger 350 for Scotland and the larger parties. For fixed dates, the charter price list for Madeira gives the regular fare for each aircraft.

Route In the air Empty leg from Season Which way it usually runs empty

The busiest weeks for both are around Christmas and New Year, half terms and Easter.

Entering Portugal at Madeira: passports, customs and tax free

Madeira is an autonomous region of Portugal and part of the EU, of Schengen and of the EU customs territory. For a traveller from Britain it is the external border of Schengen, checked by the Public Security Police at the airport.

  • Passport. Portugal asks for a passport issued less than ten years before the day of entry and valid for at least three months after the day you leave; an older or shorter document can be refused at the border.
  • 90 days in 180. British visitors need no visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180 day period across the Schengen area, and a winter spent on Madeira uses that allowance like time anywhere else in Europe.
  • Entry/Exit System. Since April 2026 the border records a digital entry instead of a stamp; on a first visit each traveller is photographed and, from twelve years of age, gives four fingerprints.
  • ETIAS. Not in force yet: in July 2026 the EU pushed its start into 2027, without naming a day. Once running, it will be needed by every traveller without a visa, will last three years and will cost 20 euros for adults from 18 to 70, with younger and older travellers free.
  • Customs. Portuguese customs allow each adult coming from Britain 16 litres of beer and 4 litres of still wine duty free, plus either 1 litre of spirits or 2 litres of fortified or sparkling wine, 200 cigarettes and other goods to a value of 430 euros; cash from 10,000 euros upwards has to be declared to customs.
  • Food. Meat and dairy products from Britain, a packed ham sandwich included, may not enter the EU in personal luggage.
  • Tax free. Visitors living outside the EU may claim back Portuguese VAT on larger purchases if the refund is validated electronically before they leave.
  • Coming home. On a private flight into the UK each adult may bring, without duty, 42 litres of beer, 18 litres of wine, 200 cigarettes and goods worth up to 270 GBP, plus either 4 litres of spirits or 9 litres of fortified wine, the category that includes Madeira wine. Note the new grouping from 1 October 2026: from that date bottles of sparkling wine count against the 18 litres of wine, and cider against the 42 litres of beer.

Empty leg calendar for Madeira, month by month

Madeira's year follows the British winter more than the European summer: demand is highest when it is cold at home and in the festival weeks of spring.

December
Very busyStrong
Christmas lights fill Funchal from early December, and the New Year fireworks over the bay, which set a Guinness World Record for the largest display on the night of 2006 into 2007, put heavy pressure on the stands at the airport.

The best choice of empty legs comes from Christmas to Easter and in April and May. Travellers tied to particular dates will find slots, stands and hotels easiest to secure in November and the first half of October.

Three situations, three answers

A family week of winter sun
A Saturday departure from Farnborough at 10:00 lands at Madeira at about 13:45 island time, the same as British time, with the hotel in Funchal twenty minutes away. The aircraft usually flies home the same afternoon and returns empty the next Friday, so both of those flights may appear on our list, and the return can be bought as an empty leg once the operator releases it.
Golf, walking and the levadas
Golfers split their days between Palheiro and Santo da Serra, while walkers book the summit and levada trails through the SIMplifica portal before they fly. Golf bags and walking kit take room in the hold, so we choose the aircraft for the luggage as well as for the passengers.
Onward to Porto Santo or the Canaries
Porto Santo, with its long sandy beach, is a short hop by air, and Tenerife and Gran Canaria are about an hour away. Keep the aircraft for the next leg, or start the flight home from the Canaries, where a released sector towards Britain can be easier to find.

Flying to Madeira with a dog or a cat

Pets from Britain enter Portugal under the common EU rules: a microchip, a rabies vaccination given at least 21 days before travel and an animal health certificate issued by an official vet no more than ten days before arrival, because a pet passport issued in Great Britain is not accepted, and since 22 April 2026 an EU pet passport no longer covers a pet living in Great Britain either. Madeira Airport is one of Portugal's designated entry points for dogs, cats and ferrets from outside the EU, with a regional veterinary service contact, while Porto Santo is not, so the operator has to plan the wind diversion with the animal in mind. Portugal asks for no tapeworm treatment on the way in, and up to five pets may travel with their owner.

Dog in the cabin of a private jet to Madeira

Returning to Britain, the pet must fly with an operator approved by the UK authorities to carry animals, and a dog needs a tapeworm treatment given by a vet between 24 and 120 hours before landing, entered in its documents. A vet in Funchal can give the treatment near the end of your holiday, and if the animal is mentioned in your first request we contact only operators cleared to carry pets.

Private flights to Madeira: what our clients want to know

Where do private jets land on Madeira?
At the island's international airport in Santa Cruz, the only one on Madeira itself. Porto Santo, on the neighbouring island, is the alternative when the wind closes Madeira or when the trip includes a stay there.
How many hours is Madeira from the UK?
About 3h 25m from Jersey, 3h 35m from Bristol and Cardiff, 3h 40m from Southampton, 3h 45m from Farnborough, Biggin Hill, Oxford and Dublin, 3h 50m from London, Birmingham and Liverpool, 3h 55m from Manchester and Belfast, 4h 00m from Leeds, 4h 05m from Newcastle and Glasgow, 4h 10m from Edinburgh and 4h 20m from Aberdeen.
Is Madeira a difficult airport for a private jet?
It is demanding, because of the mountains close to the runway, the turbulence they create and the wind. Captains need specific experience, and operators set their own wind limits, so we book only operators whose crews fly there.
What happens if the wind is too strong?
The aircraft holds, tries the other runway direction or diverts, usually to Porto Santo or the Canary Islands. From Porto Santo it can return once the wind drops, or you can take the ferry to Funchal, a crossing of about two hours and twenty minutes.
Can I land at Madeira at night?
Only exceptionally. Take offs and landings between 00:00 and 06:00 are restricted by law, and a captain may land at night only after flying there by day, so private flights are planned to arrive in daylight.
What does an empty leg to Madeira cost?
In our route table the lowest prices are Cardiff to Madeira and Madeira to Jersey, both from about 6,800 GBP for the whole aircraft, flown by a Citation CJ3 and a Citation CJ4. Chartered on dates you choose, the same eighteen routes cost between 16,100 GBP and 36,800 GBP for the aircraft.
Is there a Portuguese tax on private flights?
Yes, on the way out of Portugal only. The carbon tax depends on the seats and the distance, about 490 euros for a seven seat jet from Madeira to London, and the flight out from Britain pays British Air Passenger Duty instead.
Is there a VIP service for private passengers?
There is no private terminal, but the handler escorts you through the terminal, ExecuJet has VIP lounges, and ANA's CIPSTAR service offers segregated lanes for security and passport control at 190 euros a passenger until the end of 2026.
And if nothing is released for my dates?
Give us a few days of flexibility either side, a head count and the airport at home that suits you best. Madeira sectors can be published several days ahead, so a match may appear before you travel, and meanwhile we quote a charter with the slot and the stand already checked.

Call +44 7857 574938 , message the same number on WhatsApp , or write to flight@empty-leg.co.uk . Give us your dates, the number of passengers, the golf bags or other bulky luggage and where on the island you are staying. We answer with the sectors that fit next to the charter price, and a single booking then covers the aircraft, the slot and the stand at Madeira, the handler and the car to your hotel.
